The mmi system in the car spontaneously reboots, every 2-5 minutes. During reboot, the screen goes black and systems such as the backup camera, rear cross traffic detection, rear collision warning, and navigation are lost until the reboot completes and the user has to cycle thru multiple input & loading screens to get back to full functionality. Given the length of time the reboot requires, often the screen gets back to usability, only to reboot again less than a minute later. The reboots are random and occur whether the radio is off, radio playing; bluetooth connected, not connected; android auto running/not running; car moving, car parked; engine off, engine on; cold weather/hot weather; wet weather/dry weather. This should be considered a safety issue, as the reboots can happen in the middle of a reverse parking maneuver, and they render the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors completely inoperative until the system reloads. They also impact safety on the highway, as the reboots completely disable the navigation screens, and require multiple user input to restore, while driving.

The Audi mmi is rebooting with no warning and no apparent reason, often multiple times in as short of a span as an hour. This is causing loss of functionality for handsfree calling and, in some cases, the backup camera, both of which are certainly dangerous. These symptoms first appeared in March 2025. This problem has been verified by an Audi service center. The cause was not identified by the technicians.
Mmi (infotainment), and the dashboard screen will turn off randomly and reboot. This is incredibly dangerous as it turns all sound off, and driving visuals like directions, and freezes or reboots, not where you last had it but from a different check point. Audi dealership said there was nothing they could do , after doing 2 software updates.
Audi mmi will shut off randomly, while in drive(accelerating or not), reverse, or idle, causing the camera and sensors to become inoperable, and the vehicle gives a warning saying “parking aid: malfunction! obstacles cannot be detected” only after the mmi system has rebooted. When this occurs while reversing, not only a car but a pedestrian may be passing behind me and I would not know. This issue also causes the car to randomly ask for a pin to log in to the mmi after rebooting randomly (there is no pin that exists for any users in my vehicle and even asks when I am on a guest user), creating further distractions while driving like when I may need to use navigation, especially when the system reboots repeatedly five to six times within a ten minute time frame. This issue has been recurrent from 3/13/2025 to present 7/13/2025.
Infotainment systems randomly reboot, which can happen when reversing, and reverse camera goes black during the incident is a safety concern.
The mmi (infotainment) system in my 2020 Audi A4 start to have intermittent reboot issue during normal driving starting earlier this year. It was working expected without reboot until that time. The mmi system reboot creates harzards and danger for drivers because during rebooting, the whole navigation system is not working neither did carplay. What's even worse is that the back up camera and radar will also be disabled during rebooting. The rebooting time varies from 10s of seconds to minutes, with black screen and/or laggy, frozen screen. After rebooting, the system will have error prompt such as 'the selected user has not been used for a extended period of time' but the selected user has been using the vehicle all the time. . The mmi system, which is the display in the car, keeps rebooting every few minutes. It is extremely distracting while driving. Also during parking or back up the parking assistance and backup camera would suddenly disappear because the system reboots. The rear cross traffic warning stops working during reboot as well.
The mmi (multi-media interface) frequently reboots during driving, resulting in a black screen and the inoperability of key systems such as the backup camera, rear obstacle detection, navigation, and cell phone tethering (for hands-free operation). These reboots require user input, including entering a pin to log into the user account (if set up) and repeatedly tapping on the mmi, which can be highly distracting while driving. By its very nature, the reboot catches the driver by surprise and requires diverting attention from driving. Typically, this user input is provided while stationary, immediately after starting the vehicle. This issue constitutes a safety concern, as reboots can occur during reverse parking maneuvers, rendering the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors inoperable until the system reloads. Additionally, reboots completely disable the navigation screens and necessitate multiple user inputs to restore functionality, which can be hazardous while driving. Many states have enacted hands-free laws and requirements that mandate the use of dash-mounted systems to comply with these regulations. The reboots render such systems inoperative. Numerous reports on online user forums suggest that this issue is widespread and affects the same model year vehicles. For instance, see [xxx] . Several technical service bulletins (tsbs) filed with the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) indicate that available software updates should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. Relevant TSB numbers include: TSB 2067021, TSB 2076404, and TSB 2069112. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Problem with the vehicle is within the multi-media interface system. The mmi will randomly restart while driving, without warning. *this random and frequent reset has lead to issues with following maps (I. E. Missing turns, lost in traffic/while on the road) and while backing up (I. E. System turns off while using backup camera and safety sensors to back up). Issue was reproduced when I had a diagnostic screening completed on 6/9/25 by an Audi dealership. Through the diagnostic screening, it was found to be a software issue that needed to be updated. This was not covered by any warranty or plan. Vehicle was inspected by the Audi dealership in pittsburgh, PA in November of 2024 and the diagnostic screen was done on 6/9/25. *there were no warnings of issues within the car, the mmi just restarts, randomly with no specific time intervals but happens frequently enough that it has become a safety issue while driving. This issue started to happen in February/March of 2025.
2020 Audi A4 went in for service on 2/27. After servicing, car's electrical mmi system started rebooting randomly while driving. When this random reboot occurs, the backup camera, parking collision warning no longer function. On some trips, this occurs as often as 5-6 times while others occur just once. The problem is increasing in frequency. I took it back to the dealer on 4/16 where the only thing they could find via codes was a faulty a/c component. After searching online for a solution, I arrived at several reddit threads with other 2020 Audi A4 drivers experiencing similar issues at the end of February. The thread is listed below. [xxx] as mentioned earlier, this lack of system functioning is unsafe as advanced driving features of the car will not work when in a reboot mode. Audi needs to address this issue since this isn't only my car, but appears to have affected the entire 2020 Audi A4 model line. Restoring functionality requires user input to get through the loading screens. The issue started in February 2025 and the vehicle has been inspected by the Audi dealership (on 3/10. 25), who verified the concern and attempted a factory reset (which did not solve the issue), and they continue to claim there's nothing they can do since their obd scans return no fault codes, even though there are numerous tsbs (filed with NHTSA) that point to available software updates that should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. . Starting in Feb 2025 my mmi will randomly turn off and eventually turn back on randomly. This happens 10 times in 10min. I can’t drive the car due to it being unsafe. It turns maps off, music, calls, and the dashboard. I’ve found 100’s of other Audi 2020 owners having the exact same issue. The complaints and asking for advice are in a site called Audi world. Type in A4 2020 mmi reboot and you’ll see that it started at the same time for all of us. Around Feb. The dealership scanned and nothing came up, they updated and it hasn’t fixed it. They said they don’t know what’s wrong. Called Audi they said the same. Getting the run around. They did offer to look at it for probably $2000 and said they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to fix it. Please make a recall. Started in Feb and is still occurring. Today it restarted 7 times while idle. Doesn’t matter what you do with or without phone. It turns off then eventually back on.
The multimedia interface (mmi) infotainment system in my 2020 Audi A4 frequently and unexpectedly reboots during driving. Each reboot causes the display to go black, disabling essential safety features including the backup camera, rear obstacle sensors, navigation, and hands-free phone connectivity until the system fully reloads. Restoring operation requires manual interaction, such as entering a pin and repeatedly using the touchscreen, which distracts the driver and creates unsafe conditions. This malfunction significantly jeopardizes safety, particularly while driving in reverse, as the abrupt loss of the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors occurs without warning, substantially increasing the risk of collision or pedestrian accidents. Additionally, during normal driving, the sudden reboots disable navigation guidance and hands-free phone operation, which are essential for compliance with state laws regarding distraction-free driving. The need for manual input to restore these functionalities causes further driver distraction, compounding the potential for hazardous situations. The issue initially appeared sporadically over a year ago but increased dramatically around February 2025, now occurring as often as every few minutes. Performing a factory reset provided no improvement. Many owners report identical problems on forums like Audiworld and reddit, specifically mentioning the early-2025 onset and similar software versions. Several related technical service bulletins, including TSB 2067021, TSB 2076404, and TSB 2069112, suggest software updates to address infotainment malfunctions. My vehicle underwent scheduled maintenance at an authorized Audi dealer in December 2024; no mmi abnormalities were reported then. Due to the sudden and unexpected nature of these system reboots and the disabling of critical safety and compliance functions, this defect should be recognized as a significant safety risk requiring immediate corrective action from Audi.
Starting in around February the mmi (central computer system) system started rebooting at random times while the car was started. At first, I thought there must be something wrong with just my car. I took it into the dealer, and they said there was nothing they could do about it. I did some research and found many other people are having the same issues (thread has over 550 posts linked at the bottom) with the year model and they all started at the same time. I reached out to Audi International, and they say they've never heard of the issue, it's not widespread and to take it to the dealer (which is clearly a lie given the linked thread), when I took it to the dealer, they said Audi International needs to provide and update. Many people on the thread have been told the same thing by Audi and it is extremely frustrating that it's been 5 months, and they continue to deny anything is wrong. I feel this is a major safety issue due to the fact it is extremely distracting while driving and trying to use maps. I took a ~2-hour drive yesterday and the mmi rebooted around 100 times. The other extremely concerning safety issue is if it reboots while parked or in reverse, you lose the backup camera as well as all the proximity sensors until the car is restarted. I know many people have also filed complaints with the NHTSA and Audi International and I'm hoping with enough people speaking up someone will listen and force Audi to provide a solution. Restoring functionality requires user input to get through the loading screens. The issue started in February 2025 and the vehicle has been inspected by the Audi dealership (on 4/17/25), who applied an update at a cost of $185 which did not solve the issue), and they continue to claim there's nothing they can do since their obd scans return no fault codes, even though there are numerous tsbs (filed with NHTSA) that point to available software updates that should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. This appears to be a widespread issue based on the numerous reports found on user forums online, affecting the same model year vehicles (for multiple examples, refer to [xxx]). It is also interesting that most of the users experiencing this issue, also report it starting around the same time (Jan/Feb 2025), and they all have similar software versions, and likely production dates. I have also filed a case with Audi customer experience (as many other customers have for this issue) and the number is, [xxx] opened on 4/18/25, and I'm still pending for a satisfactory resolution. The mmi component randomly stops working. Over the past four years of driving this Audi the mmi would suddenly reboot itself only once or twice a year. Now for the past three months it tries to reboot itself once or twice a day! it's quite startling for the music to go silent and the screen goes black, the first few times this happened I thought the engine died too (that's scary). It even happens when I'm backing out of my garage, luckily there is never anybody behind me but what if I'm in the mall parking lot. When the mmi reboots itself about half of the time it is similar to a conventional starting procedure, which isn't to bad but just annoying. Other times it wants you to log on as a "guest driver" or "registered driver hasn't been in the vehicle" or it even wants you to punch in a pin number on the key pad which I don't know. All this requires your concentration on the mmi and not on the road. I wish some one could inspect this and confirm my problems before I brought it to the dealer. If I brought my car to the dealer they would charge me for diagnostics and then say they "there is nothing wrong" or worse try to upsell me a whole new unit for mega dollars. I only drive about ten to fifteen miles a day so my time on the road is minimal but it only takes a moment of distraction to have an accident. While there haven't been any warning lamps or messages about the mmi problem there was another symptom to this problem. The control button on the center console and the thumb scroll wheel on the steering wheel had a very distinct delayed reaction. The volume would change 2-3 seconds after I used the knobs and even turn off 2-3 seconds after I hit the button on the console. I think this symptom started to occur before the mmi reboots. One more quirk, after the mmi reboots, the music from my usb drive will start to play not from when the mmi cut out but from when I started the car that morning. It starts to repeat the same songs. Thank you.
The mmi randomly turns of or turns on.
While I was driving on the highway the sunroof (just the window) flew off. I had the sliding roof door closed and only heard a gust of wind initially thinking it just became ajar somehow, but nope the entire window was gone, like the adhesive deteriorated I assume. The sunroof mechanism works perfectly fine. Fortunately if was really early in the morning and to my knowledge no one was on the road, but if they had been an injury or death could have happened!.

While driving the mmi (infotainment system) spontaneously reboots. The screen goes black, all Audio shuts off and proceeds to boot up as if the car had been turned off and turned back on again. This happens multiple times per drive, every day. It can even happen while the car is in reverse and the backup camera is in use which is very dangerous. . Read more...
Mmi system in 2020 Audi A4 keeps blacking out and constantly rebooting while driving. This issue happens while going in reverse, which crashes the backup camera and triggers a safety warning in the car. It also happens while idling, which also triggers a safety warning in the car about the backup camera being inoperable.
Every 5-20 minutes while the car is on, the infotainment system reboots. This happens with or without a mobile phone plugged in via usb. This affects backup camera and parking sensors because they are not available when the system reboots. There is no warning before the system reboots.
The mmi (multi-media interface) often restarts unexpectedly while driving, causing the display to go black and disabling essential features like the backup camera, rear sensor alerts, navigation, and hands-free phone connectivity. When this occurs, the system demands user interaction—such as re-entering a pin (if one is configured) and repeatedly pressing the interface—to restore functionality. These interruptions can be particularly distracting, as they occur without warning and pull the driver’s focus away from the road. In most cases, drivers end up addressing the issue while parked, typically right after turning on the vehicle. This issue started in October-November 2024. This problem raises safety concerns, particularly when the system restarts during reverse parking, temporarily disabling both the rearview camera and obstacle detection sensors until the mmi reloads. Furthermore, these unexpected reboots shut down navigation functions and demand several user interactions to bring the system back online—creating a dangerous distraction while driving. With many states enforcing hands-free driving laws that rely on integrated, dash-mounted systems for compliance, the loss of functionality due to these reboots directly undermines a driver’s ability to meet those legal requirements. Numerous reports on online user forums suggest that this issue is widespread and affects the same model year vehicles.
Randomly, sometimes multiple times in a 30-60 minute time window while driving, the media center turns itself off and reboots. While driving with the navigation system or other key functionality of this system (phone connectivity, radio, etc) the driver suddenly has lost the current connection that was in use. As for the navigation or phone connection, this disconnection could result in a sudden dangerous situation. The manufacturer knows of this “bug” and has a software fix, but charges any customer whose vehicle is not still under warranty to diagnose and fix it.

The Audi "drive select" transmission function switches to "sports mode" in rain and snow. This makes the vehicle dangerously jumpy in slippery conditions. This has happened to me (I think) three times in the last couple of years, always in rain or snow. My knowledge of the car allowed me to slowly delve into the screen functions to reprogram the transmission while driving in these dangerous conditions, but I don't know if I could always do it again, or if others might find it too confusing in the moment.
The Audi mmi system began to spontaneously restart while driving after owning the car for a couple of years. It would power off and reboot at random intervals. It became more frequent and is both distracting and dangerous as you lose all navigation, and camera function while it reboots not to mention any telephone connection. This happens every couple of minutes and multiple times per drive. Took it to the dealer (kendall Audi of bend) and was told the mmi needed to be replaced. Spent approx. $2500 to have mmi replaced and now it has started happening again with the new mmi. There are many many other complaints with this same issue on reddit and the Audi world forum and it needs to be addressed by Audi.

The mmi system keeps crashing and rebooting. It can happen as often as every 5-15 minutes. Navigation goes down and parking and backup camera is unavailable until system goes through the reboot process. My understanding is that there are numerous other Audi owners who have this problem, with no clear fix . Audi has nit addressed this or have been able to offer any help or resolution to this issue.
Vehicle was inspected at 50,000 miles by the dealer and report says that passenger side motor mount was leaking. They also said that the motor mount will deteriorate rapidly and will affect the safety of the vehicle.
The vehicle at 13,xxx miles on the high ways, and during stop & go traffic; vehicle begins to tremble, transmission and floor shakes, rpms are higher than normal, abnormal noises coming from engine (screeching), jerking on acceleration on the first gears, rough idle, happens only on highways after 1hr of driving. Can drive over 40 min without any check engine light turning on. No codes come up, while clearly having issues. After a day of being off, car goes back to normal without those issues, just vibrations and pulsing on idle. -happens on texas highways where vehicle begins to have trouble with acceleration and transmission shakes yet no check engine or error messages appear. -problem has been shown to one Audi dealer while happening and another Audi dealer was able to reproduce the problem. They even noted how vehicle will do all the issues noted above while not providing any error codes or messages. - vehicle has been inspected but all they do is reset software and hand back keys. While issues are still prevalent. - no warning, no over heat or any codes appear on the vehicle. Issues started at 13,xxx miles. Only on long highway or stop and go traffic does it happens.

Start stop system failures. Upon engine restarting, it stalls instead. This has happened on multiple occasions and the dealer response is to just turn it off every time you start the car. Causes dangerous situations due to inability to move car until full power cycle happens.
I was driving on the freeway at night. There was a sudden explosion that sounded like a gunshot. I was shocked and afraid. I heard the rain outside, so it seemed like there was a hole in the car. I pulled off the freeway and went to a well lit gas station to inspect the car. The sunroof had exploded upward. Fortunately the fabric sunshade was closed so the shards of glass remained above it. There was no hole in the fabric so nothing had fallen through the glass. There is no trajectory of a rock kicked up by another vehicle that could have exploded a roof outward. I did not go under an overpass from which something could have fallen. There was no rock or meteor in my car—as mentioned, the underlying sunshade was not pierced by a falling object. This occurred suddenly and without warning. Consumers are clearly complaining about this problem but nothing is being done. I will talk to my insurance company and Audi tomorrow as this happened late on a Friday night. Audi should not only eat the cost of this repair but these manufacturers should be forced to fix this problem. It is a horrible sudden sound, shards of glass could have hit me driving if the fabric had been open, and anyone in the back seat could have been injured or blinded by shattered glass. This problem has been a problem for years. Shame on everyone for allowing this to continue.

This safety issue concerns the mmi system. In my state of MA we cannot use a cell phone while driving. The car's mmi system does not connect to the mmi and hands free calling cannot be done. The dealership and Audi have indicated there is no fix for this. The mmi does not currently have any functionality inclusive of various car warnings.
