Audi A4 owners have reported 50 problems related to exterior lighting (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Audi A4 based on all problems reported for the A4.
The headlights on my 2017 Audi A4 have developed stress cracks in the headlamp housing. According to the inspection performed by an authorized Audi dealer, these cracks will obscure headlight projection and lower the visibility range at night. The dealer specifically noted there were no signs of outside influence or misuse, and the issue is likely due to internal headlight temperature, external ambient temperature, and age. This defect directly impairs visibility and makes it unsafe to drive the vehicle at night or in low-light conditions. Headlights are a critical safety system. The problem has been confirmed and documented by the Audi dealership in a written inspection report. Audi of America has acknowledged that the defect is unrelated to misuse but refuses to fully assist with repairs, despite admitting it impacts visibility. The issue is ongoing and worsens with time. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages related to the defect prior to its discovery. The vehicle and documentation are available for inspection upon request. This is a safety concern that puts me and others at risk due to reduced nighttime visibility.

The mmi or infotainment center turns off and reboots/kicks user out while the car is in motion and also while stopped. The mmi going off has cut out while backing up not allowing the rear camera to be used and has also not allowed the front and rear sensors to be used for parking/auto breaking. There seems to be a large portion of similar complaints and unknown fixes for 2020 models either exactly the same or similar. Personally have not had it inspected or attempted to fix outside the recommended soft reset, user account reset, and even unplugging battery to reset as well. No fix has been identified or has proven to not cause the issue from recurring. This has occurred more frequently in past week or so ~15jun where it rebooted once in an two drive, 16jun no reboots for 1. 5 hour min drive, 17jun one reboot for 1. 5 hour drive, and 19jun where it rebooted 7 times in 2 hour drive. There is no warning and seems to be random or when on full screen maps through android auto.

I own a 2009 Audi A4. On the month of October 2024 my transmission failed. I towed my car to a mechanic who then replaced my transmission I picked up my car on December 11 2024 at 7 am from Audi of fresno. I have had no prior issues and like always I expect a dealership to inspect a new vehicle that comes in ,as I have never been able to get work done with out them always doing their own diagnostic. Any ways . On the morning of December 20 at 8:15 am I went to pic up breakfast from carls jr with my boyfriend . As I placed my order and drove up to the window without a single warning my car engulfed in flames from the front driver side . I turned my car off jumped out called. The fire department and watched as my car continued to build flames until the fire department finally showed up. Had I taken the freeway thay day instead of the streets I wouldnt have noticed the fire untill it was to late. . Im in shock and also just pissed that something like thus happened.

The third brake light intermittently stops working. Being that it is intermittent, it tells me the led and circuitry are working. Also, a warning alert will illuminate on my dash instrument cluster and not when the light is working again. Upon further searching on-line, there is an issue with a solder joint cracking. I believe this is the case because when I jiggle the connector, the light will illuminate. Since this light is required by law, this is a very important safety issue. And a rather expensive one since the replacement part alone is $150-$200.

Headlights flickering. Must turn off the headlights and turn them back on for this issue to go away. All headlight components were replaced including the bulb and this issue still is there. The Audi dealerships seem to not know how to fix this issue. This issue is only on the left side/driver side. The dealer could not duplicate this issue on the right side/passenger side. All new parts were installed.

2006 Audi A4 quattro, a very annoying situation it also affects safety while driving in dark; I ignored it for few months as it got worst decided to take it in. They suggested to replace both igniters (xenon ballast) and bulbs. My Audi dealer said that Audi knows about this problem but doesn't know how to fix it -- changing the light bulb doesn't solve the problem. Since my car was just out of warranty it would be about $1600. This problem is intermittent. It has been occurring a lot recently with the cold weather. I can't tell for sure whether it is temperature related. This is a common problem and most importantly a major safety.

Right dipped headlamp issue resulting diagnosis after new headlamp ($125) and issue still continued with need to replace headlamp ignition now ($950). I see online at this is been a reoccurring problem in models from my year and believe should be some type of weed call and reimbursement. The issue occurred sporadically seeming to be fixed only to go back out with no specific reason. . . Both sitting, driving, turning corners, or hitting bumps. This create a safety issue of particularly when the headlamp goes out at night.
Lights are constantly blinding other drivers on low beam.

I was driving on highway at night going at 70 mph and suddenly I received left dip light warning and after 2 minutes received right dip light warning. I quickly have to reset the light after which both left and right lights came up. After some 20-30 min it happened again. There ere high chances of fatal crash at 70 mph on a highway at night. I was lucky enough to escape this. This issue is intermittent but extremely dangerous for safety of passengers.
The driver side head light stop working.
Repeated headlamp failure.
The vehicle for the past several months has had head lamp problems. I will be driving along and all of a sudden one of the headlamps will flicker and then go out. A warning on the dash will say left (or right) headlamp dipped. The only way to alter the situation is to turn the headlamp off and then back on at speed. This is a very dangerous situation. The dealer has said they cannot duplicate the situation and therefore cannot fix it. An internet search revealed that many Audi A4 owners have been experiencing the same problem on a regular basis. It is beyond belief that Audi, a manufacturer that prides itself on safety, has not investigated this problem and come up with a fix. I believe a recall should be initiated and Audi should be required to fix this very dangerous problem/defect.
The contact owns a 2005 Audi A4. The contact stated that the head lights failed. The contact was able to engage the lights for re-illumination however, the failure was recurring. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000.
I have had a recent discussion with Audi customer service manager in wayzata, mn at 11:55am. This is regarding a defect in my model year 1998 Audi A4 2. 8. , or Audi A4 2. 8 manufactured June of 1997. I researched the web and saw hundreds of similar complaints regarding the light switch. I turned my light switch on and the low beam and high beam do not work. The temporary high beam works. I saw many other 1998 Audi owners with the same problem; even more similar with the fact that we had a 1998 model year car that was manufactured in 1997. The recall campaign is a little ambiguous stating model years and manufacture dates. My car falls within the manufacture date but not the recall date. The recall is open however 1998 models, which are being affected by this issue, are not included. It is obvious that cars manufactured prior to August of 1997 even though they are model year 1998 have the same problem.

I purchased the vehicle on 02/11/2012 and that very evening when I had the opportunity to use the lights, my right light began to flicker and then failed completely. This really unnerved me as I was in an area with no street lights. And didn't really know what was happening. I instinctively turned the lights off and then on again, and this made them come back on. Unfortunately, this happened numerous times that night. I feel this is a blatant safety issue especially as I had family members in my car and their well being was compromised. I have researched this problem via the internet and it appears to be rampant on Audi's and the dealerships don't either know what to do or don't want to do it as for the expense of the parts. I spoke with no less than 8 Audi dealerships around the PA northeast and no one could positively say what would be the problem. I am having the bulb replaced at my cost because I bought the car used and have no warranty. Now I know why I was able to purchase it at a good cost. Last owner was probably crazy over this. By all accounts, even replacing the bulb might not work. There are no less than 4 TSB's out on this problem. Why Audi gets away with this is a travesty and this should be remedied as soon as possible before someone gets killed.
The left headlamp will flicker and then dip towards the ground while driving, a dashboard warning says "left headlamp dipped". The car has been to the Audi dealer several times and they are unable to replicate the issue, and tell me the fault does not generate a computer code for them to check. It has started happening on a more frequent basis, at different speeds and on different road conditions.
The contact owns a 2004 Audi A4. The contact stated that the front passenger head light failed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the light bulb needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 82,000.
My headlamps fail while driving. The headlamps, both right and left, will "dip". This will turf the lamps off. When I take it to the dealer they tell me that they can't make it happen so they can't fix it.
Left and right dipped light indicator even after having them reviewed and adjusted and ultimately replaced. Audi warranty would not cover the repair cost due as we were slightly over the 50000 mileage allowance. Ended up paying almost $300 for the repair. We continue to have "dipped light" problems.
There is a failure with my high intensity discharge(hid) lights that causes them to flicker and sometimes to turn off completely while in use/ the failure occurs every time the hid lights are turned on. Bulbs have been changed, but the condition is not resolved. An alarm comes on screen which reads "left light dipped" or "right light dipped" and results in the light turning off completely on the dipped side.
Headlamp has "dipped" multiple times while driving (day and night) since I have owned the vehicle (now at 77k). There is an Audi TSB out for this issue but can never get a certified Audi dealership to fix this issue as they cannot make it happen on command when they inspect it. Not only is this a known issue but it is an issue that is a safety problem that Audi and it's affiliates do not take seriously or show determined interest in fixing.
Left xenon headlamp works intermittently. It started being a problem about 2 years ago, shortly after purchasing the car used. It was repaired under warranty, but the intermittent operation has returned.
We have experienced an intermittent problem with the hid head lights flickering and shutting off during operation at night. The left low beam began to flicker and then shut off. The head light warning indicator light comes on. After inspection the next day, lights came back on and were working normally no warning lights were on. This appears to be a common problem with this type of car and in my opinion a very dangerous one that needs to be addressed by Audi in a recall for the obvious ballast, bulb, wiring, problem that exists on this car.

On my 2006 Audi A4 2. 0t quattro sedan, the xenon directional low beam headlamps intermittently shut off suddenly and without warning, giving a message of "right dipped headlamp. " the lights come on again only after turning the switch to "off" position, waiting ten seconds, then switching them back on. The problem is intermittent but occurs every day. Audi dealers have replaced xenon bulbs, igniters and pigtails to lamps, advising that wires become very hot. Problem has not been fixed and constitutes great danger on dark roads. This has been recurrent on a regular basis for at least two years without a solution.
On our 2006 A4 2. 0 quattro after turning on low beam xenon continually flickers and eventually goes out. This is followed a left bulb failure indication. Recycling the light switch may or may not solve problem. Turning car completely off seems to be a little more effective but all is obviously a major safety issue as well as a violation of traffic laws. I told my Audi service guy about this but although Audi says to replace bulb (over $200us ) he was sure this would not solve problem. He said he has numerous customers with the problem. I cant believe this is allowed. Driving without a headlamp is a traffic violation for a reason. It is a major distraction for driver and I'm sure on coming traffic.
Dipped lower right headlamp. I have had the bulb replaced at my expense because the dealer said that would be the reason for it to flicker and go on and off. This did not remedy the situation. Looking at all of the complaints a recall needs to happen.
Left dipped headlamp that Audi claims they, "know about but don't have a solution. ".
Audi A4 right dipped head light goes off intermittently for rhyme or reason. Multiple people report same problem. The dealer changed bulb but with same problem.
At least quarterly I have to replace one or more bulbs. Within this past week my rr brake bulb & lr parking light blew.
Audi A4 2006 repeated "dipped headlamp". Brought to Audi many times for repair where the computer was reflashed without success. Finally had to replace igniter and bulb for $1800 even though car was still under warranty. Now happening again on the other side (other headlamp). This is a common issue with many Audi owner and should have a Audi recall about this.
