Sun Roof Problems of Audi A4

Sunroof exploded around 4:am while driving @ 40 mph. No impact to vehicle to cause explosion. The outside temperature was 45 degrees and the inside temperature was set @ 75 degrees. Left a hole 5" x 10" and glass was falling inside car. It sounded like a gunshot which scared me but I took control of the car as there were no other vehicles on the road at that time.

The Audi A4 1. 8t that I purchased in Dec 2002 has a sunroof/moonroof assembly. A few times I have noticed that the sunroof opens and closes on its own while the car is in motion.

The sun roof on our Audi spontaneously shattered while we were driving on the highway. It more or less exploded. Glass covered the inside of the car. No one was injured but we almost caused an accident due to the fact this occured during rush hour traffic at 65 mph. Four to five inch diameter pieces of glass fell into our daughters child seat in the back seat. We had had problems with the window opening and closing on it's own and Audi had worked on the window prior to the incident. The window had once again opened on it's own and it was closing when it exploded. It seemed to explode at the end of closing when the window raises upward to seal. Audi claims that the incident could not have happened the way I have stated. I found several other incidents reported on the internet of sunroof explosions on BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Lexus automobiles. Although no one was injured I feel as though we were lucky. If my daughter had been in the car at the time she would have been hit by large pices of glass or an accident could have occured as a result of the glass falling into the drivers eyes. My hair was full of glass. I would like to know how many cases of similar incidents have been reported to your agency. I tried to look it up on the internet but the search is specific to year, make and model of the car. I would appreciate any information you could provide on sunroof breakage on all other automobiles as well. The window has been replaced but Audi refuses to cover the window under the warranty. I was quite surprised to find that a sunroof is not shatterproof glass.

I have a 97 Audi A4 2. 8 . Quattro. I have ahad numerous repairs on this vehicle. The most recent problem is that a control arm on the sunroof (appears to be a powder metal part about 1 inch in size) has broken. This break requires that the the complete sunroof be replaced at a cost of $1300. I was interested to known if others have complained about similar failures on Audis or vws. Thanks!.

Possible manf. Defec drain hoses for sunroof break/leak water stains headliner at rear quarterpanel on both sides of interior. (vacinity of airbag) possible corrosion damage to airbag over time? dt.
