1 Steering problem of the 2014 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 07/26/2025

The front subframe has experienced catastrophic failure due to severe and premature rust-through corrosion. Multiple holes have perforated the component, compromising the vehicle's structural integrity. The part is available for inspection upon request. The safety of my family and others was put at significant risk, as the subframe is the primary component that mounts the engine, suspension, and steering rack to the vehicle. A failure of the subframe while driving could cause a complete loss of steering control and the collapse of the front suspension, leading to a serious or fatal crash. The problem was independently reproduced and confirmed by both an independent service center and an authorized Audi dealership. Both establishments have deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive due to this specific issue. The manufacturer (Audi of America) has been made aware of the issue through their dealership network. They have acknowledged the defect by offering a "goodwill" repair to replace the subframe, confirming their awareness of this failure mode. However, the manufacturer has made this safety-critical repair contingent on the owner first paying for several thousand dollars of unrelated maintenance items, creating a financial barrier that prevents the safety fix from being implemented. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure's discovery. This is a silent failure that provides no warning to the driver. It was only discovered during a routine service visit when the vehicle was on a lift.

2 Steering problem of the 2014 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 03/02/2025

It has been very cold here in the north east. Under freezing for more than a month. My door lock sensors stopped working about 4-5 weeks ago. Two days ago I was driving and the power steering stopped working. Then after about 2 days it began working again. Just as the temps went above freezing. And the door lock sensors started working again. I had noticed over the last month or so that papers I had behind the front seat when I went to retrieve them were very wet, soaked. I took my car to my mechanic today and he told me that the computer is under the front seat. And water in this area may be causing the failure of the power steering and the door locks. So he said I should report it to you and you could possibly help.

4 Steering problem of the 2023 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 02/11/2025

The lane keeping system randomly will malfunction and will veer the car either into oncoming traffic or out of the lane I am driving in. The most recent it tried to veer me off the road completely and into a sign off the road. The vehicle will also sometimes trigger the Audi collision avoidance system randomly. It has done it twice while turning left that the car will come to an abrupt halt for no reason. Both of these concerns can create car accidents if someone is either following closely behind or if the car veers into a different lane. I have reported this to the dealer multiple times and have escalated to Audi corporate. They are unable to replicate the issue, because it happens randomly and say the vehicle is operating within the standard. There have been no warnings or lamps that would indicate that the car has an issue.

5 Steering problem of the 2016 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 02/10/2025

Back in 2017 there was a recall on my 2016 Audi Q5 regarding the fuel pump. Audi's solution to this recall was to replace the fuel pump if it had any cracks, but if there weren't any cracks their protocal was to just put a protective shield on the fuel pump. Since my car was only a year old, all that Audi did was the protective shield. A few weeks ago, my car started smelling like leaking fuel. After a couple days I took it to Audi since there had been a recall. My car has less than 63,000 miles on it and according to service persons that have looked at my car, it is in excellent condition. However, Audi service told me that because the protocol for the recall was performed on my car back in 2017, there was nothing they could do except replace my fuel pump and charge me for the work done. The noxious fumes were so bad that I could not drive my car without having all the windows down. I found out that when the intake fuel pump goes bad, so does the high pressure fuel pump and both have to be replaced along with the pressuer sensor. This cost me $2,700. After getting my car back and driving it less than 25 miles, I was stranded on the road and had to have my car towed back to the shop with a broken steering rack and a dead battery. Come to find out, the steering rack is another issue going on with Audi vehicles. These are very serious and life threatening situations, especially with noxious fumes from gasoline which is highly flammable. Audi needs to reimburse me the $2,700 for the fuel pump replacement cost that I would not have incurred if my fuel pump had actually been replaced in 2017, instead of a band-aid being put on it, which was negligence on Audi's part. By not replacing the fuel pump, I ended up with a gas leak in my car, my car dangerously breaking down in the middle of the road and having to be towed and ultimately a very costly repair for me of which Audi doesn't want to own any responsibility in.

6 Steering problem of the 2013 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 02/02/2025

When at highway speed, the vehicle veered hard to the left without any driver input, causing the car to cross several lanes of traffic and hit a concrete divider at ~65mph. The driver fractured her back, and one of three children in the car experienced injury. The vehicle was declared a total loss by insurance. The driver (my wife) indicated that a similar incident happened at low speed in a parking lot, but it resolved after shut down and restart of the engine. It is my understanding that the vehicle is currently either at or on the way to a copart lot.

7 Steering problem of the 2018 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 01/27/2025

While driving, the power steering completely went out and lost the ability to steer, while on the road. There were no prior warnings or feeling in the steering to present a possible future failure of steering under power. Put myself, my wife and the other operators at risk as I lost all power steering and had to pull over immediately. I have a current repair order open at a local shop and the psm module has failed, of course requiring a full steering rack replacement to the tune of +$5k.

8 Steering problem of the 2018 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 12/21/2024

While driving, the steering wheel suddenly locked up and could not be turned. Several warning lights simultaneously appeared on the dashboard including: "steering malfunction! please stop vehicle", "Audi adaptive light malfunction! see owners manual", "start/stop system malfunction! function unavailable", and "Audi pre sense currently limited" - no warning lights were present prior to this event. The sudden loss of steering could have caused serious injury to myself and to other drivers or pedestrians nearby. I was thankfully able to stop the vehicle, but I could not pull over because the steering wheel could not be turned. The car was towed to the Audi dealership and I was told the "electronic power steering rack" would need to be replaced costing nearly $5,000. 00.

9 Steering problem of the 2016 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 07/18/2024

Power steering failure. While driving warning light came on and power steering immediately went out. No prior warnings. Safety was put at risk because steering was basically inoperative, had to muscle to turn, unable to stop at intersections due to difficulty turning when coming to stop. Had vehicle towed to dealership because unable to drive. Had to replace power steering rack with adaptions. The j500 electromechanical power steering control module integrated into the steering rack was was electrically faulty.

10 Steering problem of the 2015 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 01/25/2024

I was driving down the road when the steering stop working and I could not control the direction that the tires moved. The direction of steering would not respond to my movements and I was unable to control the car. I was able to break and bring the car to a stop, however, if I were moving at a much faster speed this would have been extremely dangerous. I brought the car to our mechanic and we were informed that the tie rods were broken, the threading on the attachment pieces was completely rusted out and the threads were bare. The piece simply came apart and was malfunctioning. No warning signs or service lights came on in the vehicle before this happened and we had no indication that there would be an issue with the steering when operating the vehicle. Our mechanic told us this was one of the most dangerous things he's ever seen happen in a car and that our life was at risk. We regularly have our car inspected and serviced and there was no indication that this would happen. Our car had a major engine problem in August 2023 and was at the valenti Audi dealership in waterbury, CT, during that time the car was inspected and we were not told the tie-rods had any problems.

11 Steering problem of the 2017 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

Steering is occasionally exhibits resistance when turning left or right. Steering becomes very stiff intermittently. I have taken the to a repair twice but the does not duplicate. The repair did a scan to see if there were any codes but none came up. We also have an odb2 scanner and scan the vehicle right when problem occurred but no codes were displayed on my scanner. My wife has a long commute of 40 miles in each direction and I concerned. There should be a recall as I feel this is a safety issue.

12 Steering problem of the 2015 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 01/14/2024

We have never had an issue with the vehicle until we recently faced very cold temps (-10 to -20). Was driving the vehicle, with no issues, and stopped to get gas. Upon restarting the vehicle it displayed a power steering error with a do not drive. The steerling lost all power steering function and was extremely hard to turn. We let the vehicle sit and restarted it 3-4 times and on the fourth try, the error went away and there was no further issues with the power steering on this (first) occasion. This has now happened intermittently since the first occurrence (even with very cold temps) but with no regularity. Not sure if this is a malfunction or if there is something in need of replacement. It is extremely concerning.

13 Steering problem of the 2018 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 12/01/2023

Steering rack completely failed while driving. Causing steering to become unusable nearly causing a wreck putting everyone on the road at risk. Vehicle has less 80k miles and is driven occasionally. This was an issue on early models and seems to not have been fully fixed on this model either. Warning lamps require vehicle to pullover and stop.

14 Steering problem of the 2018 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 09/29/2023

Hello, on September 29, 2023 while I was driving my 2018 Audi Q5 a light come out "steering malfunction! please stop vehicle". I called the dealer Audi arrowhead in peoria, arizona, and schedule an appointment for october3, 2023 to do a diagnose. I drove the car throughout these days and I have not notice anything wrong with the car, except that light. I went to the dealer they proceed the diagnosis, gave me the code c101c07, and the quote to do steering gear replacement. I asked them: if the car is drivable, is just that light on the dashboard, why you can not do a software update? because they refused to do that, I called Audi USA, and after a few days of back and forth communication they refused to do the software update and agreed to participate with the repairs and cover 50% of the repair cost. I pick up the car from Audi arrowhead (they did not provide a print out result for diagnosis, also no bill for diagnosis) and I called Audi scottsdale and because they confirmed me that they can do a software update I decided to bring the car in their shop and have again a diagnosis done. The same code was founded and of course they refused to give me a print out result, and I got charged $210. Even they admit the car does not show sign of something broken, telling me that it is possible that it will never show signs of failure they refused to do the software update. Because it doesn't make sense to me that the car runs perfectly, as always, only the light is on in the dashboard, I ask you to help me and intervene by asking Audi to issue a bulletin to update the software on my 2018 Audi Q5. Thank you in advance!!!.

15 Steering problem of the 2015 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 09/16/2023

Car worked fine with no signs of any issues or concerns. I stopped at a light and the car turned off as the start-stop system normally does. However when the light went green, the car would refuse to start flashing "steering malfunction, do not drive". . . I'm at a light on a highway, what do you mean "do not drive"! the power steering was completely lost and it seems because of it, the entire system would refuse to allow the car to even start. The car had to eventually be pushed off the highway after causing an incredible amount of traffic and then towed. I contacted Audi and they appear to know about this issue, however will only warranty a very specific fault code, and will not honor any other faults in the system or any car that doesn't have a perfect history. Estimated cost to repair this absurd faulty steering rack according to online sources is almost $4000. Audi even recalled this system on they're higher package cars like the sq5 but still wont recall this system in the Q5 line up.

16 Steering problem of the 2016 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 03/10/2023

The entire steering system failed. While the car was in motion, the steering wheel completely locked up and could not be turned even a degree. This caused extreme safety concern as the road was curving but the car could not be steered. The problem was confirmed by an independent mechanic and then by an Audi dealership service department. The entire steering component was then replaced.

17 Steering problem of the 2016 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 02/23/2023

Power steering control module failure at cold temperatures. Knows to be an issue on many Audi cars between 2011-2016. This caused my power steering to fail suddenly. My safety was impacted because I lost the ability to steer while driving. The vehicle and the steering rack is available for inspection at any time. Problem continues to be in effect. There are warning messages and lights on the instrument cluster along with fault codes significant for power steering module failure.

18 Steering problem of the 2014 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 02/18/2023

Steering shaft rusted and sized. Water and mag chloride got passed the seal causing the slip joint of the steering shaft to corrode and size. The outer tube of the shaft was almost corroded through with visible holes in the metal. I believe this to be a safety concern do to the possibility of the shaft braking while driving. I am a certified Audi technician and have seen this problem on other similar vehicles. This is my personal vehicle and I have the old steering shaft for inspection if needed.

19 Steering problem of the 2023 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 01/04/2023

Electromechanical steering rack failed as I was driving. It was hard to move my vehicle. The problem has been confirmed by the dealership. There is a recall for this part in canada. Also, an extended warranty was granted by Audi of America for this part for numerous 2011-2016 Audis, including the Q5, so long as they are under 10 years / 125,000 miles, which mine is. However, when I have gone into my local Audi and also called Audi of America, they said my vehicle is not included in this extended warranty and there is no recall on the part. 4) yes, my car has been inspected by my local Audi. 5) yes, the warning lamp continues to be displayed. 30 Steering problem of the 2019 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 03/06/2022

2019 Q5 - 19457 miles. Power steering failed while traveling on an internal curved road at 10mph. Fortunately, the road was not busy and I was able to pull besides a curb. The car flashed a 'steering: malfunction! please stop vehicle' warning and it was really hard to maneuver the car. Towed the car to nearest Audi dealership and dealer is looking at it. But if this had happened on a freeway, it would've resulted in a catastrophic accident.

31 Steering problem of the 2018 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 02/14/2022

On 02/14/2022. Car just died while waiting for cars to pass to turn at light. Dashboard started flasing "engine start system: malfunction! - please contact service" then "parking break malfunction!" then, "steering: malfunction! - you an can continue driving" panicked because was holding up traffic. After a couple minutes trying car then just started drove home and put on battery charger overnight. Hoping that's all it was. Next morning 02/15/2022 started right up early morning no issues to be concerned with was on highway doing approx 69 mph, drove approximately 42 miles then then while only driving 35 mph 4 lane highway. Again, no warnings, but while driving engine and steering, just shut down. Almost causing me to be reared and then hit on passanger side. I don't even want to think what could have happened had this happened on interstate or if my children were in the vehicle. It was a very dangerous and scary situation even happening while only doing 35 mph. This should be considered a major recall. Vehicle was towed on 02/16/22 to clearwater Audi. We did not receive vehicle back until after over 9 weeks, 04/22/22. Yesterday, 06/07/2022 sensors glitching again and being called back into dealership. I want this life threatening recall documented. There is absolutely no reason why a well cared for vehicle with less than 18,000 miles should be having these issues. We we keep losing out on time from work and driving back and forth to dealership. We need to be able to rely on the safety and integrity of this vehicle not only for the driver/passangers but for the safety of others on the road. Thank you for your time to hear our concerns.

32 Steering problem of the 2014 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 01/22/2022

I have a 2014 Audi Q5 premium plus with 3. 0 liter engine. I was in wolfeboro nh this past weekend and it was very cold, -15 at night. My vehicle has 123000 miles on it and has run with no issues to this point. Luckily , I parked the car to go into store and when I came out dsc red warning light came on , could not budge the steering wheel. Looked up issue in manual and said do not drive. I am from CT so no car now in nh. I had vehicle towed to closest Audi dealer , 60 miles away for service. It turns out to be I need a whole new steering column due to cold temperatures. If this happened while driving it would have been devastating. My issue is there was a recall on the 2014 sq5 for the exact same issue. I have found numerous complaints for the same issue for the same vehicle, why has there not been recall? this could have ben a deadly incident in the wrong situation. Vehicle at Audi dealer to the tune of $3600 for repairs.

On a cold day got in vehicle, and red light came on saying do not drive, power steering failure. Was able to drive later in day after vehicle warmed up. Audi syracuse said our car has an extended warranty, steering box rack issues. Car went in to check no codes were found. Said to bring back if happened again. They said they have other vehilces in shop waitinfg for parts to fix them. This is a serious safety issue it it happens on the road, and they are not offering a recall. Totally unacceptable.

35 Steering problem of the 2019 Audi Q5

Failure Date: 01/04/2022

After driving on deep wet icy slush, the vehicle was on a straight section of road and suddenly vehicle inexplicably veered hard to the left causing it to run off the road and into a tree. Electrical component failure lights were illuminated on dash afterwards. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I believe that the stability control systems and or drive train suddenly changed. I believe this might be due to water ingress and failure of gateway module. This is available upon request. Car is in shop how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? sudden loss of steering control in icy conditions has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? not yet. Current recall has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? body shop is looking at vehicle were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? I was unaware of warning lamps until after loss of control.
