I was driving down a slight hill in 1/2 inch of snow at 5mph and when I tired to gently brake as I descended the hill, the brake pedal had no resistance and went flat to the floor. I had no brakes. I then tried to steer towards the side of the road and the steering wheel completely locked up and I was not able to steer. I slid 150 feet down the hill and into a ditch. No brakes and no steering. There must have been a failure of some kind. Terrifying.

Gateway control modular failure. At dealer currently. We took pictures. Multiple reports of the exact same thing on Audi forums online. Audi confirmed same issue. While driving car it suddenly stopped and the emergency brake was automatically applied. No warning, no way to live the car to safety, all the warning lights began to flash, windows started to rolling up and down. Then the car just turned off. Unable to start it, turn it on, move it, nothing. Needed a special tow truck to have it towed to dealer. A serious safety issue. I am 8 m pregnant, had my brother and 4 year old nephew in car. I am concerned for my safety but equally concerned for every Q5 has this gateway module in this location. Every person driving a Q5 and other drivers can be affected by the design flaw of the location/ lack of protection of this gateway module. We were lucky we were not on the highway. What if this happened on a highway at high speeds or in a curve.

1st occurrence(9/17/21): while traveling the power steering failed. I stopped roadside to check to make sure there were no issues with tires. I resumed traveling and found steering to be stiff and over steer(feeling as if the wheels tilted) when turning left or right. After stopping for approximately 20 minutes I returned to my vehicle to resume my trip. The stirring operated normally. 2nd occurrence(9/27/21): approximately three weeks later the power steering completely failed and remained that way until I returned to my residence. Since there was no recall listed and the original warranty has expired I called a repair shop to have the vehicle checked(first available appointment was two weeks out but I could leave the vehicle and they would do an assessment if they could fit it in their schedule. 3rd occurrence(9/30/21): power steering failed but I was able to maintain control. The power operated the following day but travel was limited. I hope an assessment can be completed within the next two days. I did purchase an extended warranty through the dealership. Note: each event occurred during favorable weather conditions(no rain, ice, snow or storms of any kind).

The 2nd generation Audi Q5 (roughly 2017-2021+) has a major susceptibility to immediate, catastrophic failure as evidenced from my own experience and dozens of episodes reported online. This failure typically causes a $2000-$3000 repair bill that Audi will not cover and will claim is the fault of the owner. My wife was driving the vehicle with our 5-year-old daughter in the car in the middle of the rear seat. The daughter spilled part of a 500 ml water bottle onto the seat next to her. Within 20 seconds of this happening, the car began alerting about steering malfunctions, braking malfunctions, and the windows began seizing up and down repeatedly. The car was completely inoperable. We are lucky this was on a slow city street and not on the interstate or tollway! once stopped, we no buttons generated any actions from the vehicle. We couldn't power it on, put it into neutral to be towed away, raise the windows, or perform any other function at all. The car was a useless brick. We were charged $125 for the towing service and another $2200 from Audi plano in texas. After countless conversations, even debates, with david (director Audi plano) and even Audi USA customer experience team, they refused to admit any fault in a poor design and help cover any of the costs whatsoever, and we are even still in warranty. . Was driving on state highway and all of a sudden the warning light came on that the steering wheel has malfunctioned. I could not rotate the steering wheel easily, but fortunately was able to pull over without any accident. This could have been a fatal failure had it happened on a highway or a slope.

I was driving on city streets and steering became very difficult. Turning corners at slow speed was very tough and jerky. Control of the car was very difficult the slower the speed. Highway wasn't too bad but you it still took more effort than was normally expected/experienced. Firestone service noted a opening in the upper steering shaft. They spray lubricated the shaft and it appears to be back to normal, but since there the shaft is open to weathering this is not a permanent fix.
The contact owns a 2015 Audi Q5. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, a warning message regarding the power steering was displayed that also instructed not to drive the vehicle. The steering wheel was very difficult to turn in either direction. During the failure, the outside temperature was very cold. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer Audi of boise located at 8400 w. Franklin rd #1, boise, id 83709 who diagnosed that the steering rack was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 36,000.
Steering essentially "locked" up for no apparent reason. Warning alarm sounded and "steering defective, do not drive" warning appeared. Very dangerous, can barely turn wheel. If this would have occurred while driving I've no doubt accident, possibly injury, would have occurred.

Twice in 2019 my car slammed to a stop while backing up at 2-3 mph. I had not hit anything and no damage to car. There was nothing to hit, just a vacant area. Yesterday while driving forward at 35-40 mph on a main street with the closest oncoming car 1 block away my car slammed to a dead, wall slamming stop. If a car had been behind me there would have been an accident. I emphasize: this was a dead, no slow-down stop. I refused to drive it 50 miles to the dealer. The dealer has picked it up and told me the sensors were set too sensitive. If so, why did this not occur every time I drove? frankly, I am afraid I will be forced to drive this car for the next 3 months until my lease expires. The dealer will not give me a loaner. I think this is a very unsafe car. I have no confidence in the way this is being handled. For your interest, I was given a ride today in the 2019 sedan model. Unbelievably it slammed to a stop while backing out of my driveway.
I approach a city intersection at the fort lauderdale airport and had no brakes, steering, or accelerator control. The vehicle was completely unresponsive. I flew through the inspection hitting the curb and launching my vehicle approximately 50 of distance over a drainage ditch slamming to a complete stop on the other side. The speed was at least 40-50mph at that moment, maybe faster since the vehicle just accelerated but would not brake or steer. I had my seatbelt fastened and airbags were deployed. The vehicle was totaled and the frame literally shattered on impact. I sustained serious trauma to my face and back and ankles.
2015 Audi Q5. Consumer writes in regards to defective steering gear. The consumer stated the steering gear became dislodged.
While driving approximately 35 mph in the rain the power steering malfunction error message appeared on the virtual cockpit. I pulled over into an empty parking lot, turned the car off and restarted. The error message was still there when I turned the car on. It was very difficult to turn the steering wheel, especially when moving at very low speeds. It was the same feeling as driving a car without power steering, which if the driver is not expecting it or physically strong enough to turn the wheel, would definitely present a safety issue. Given this is a new car (only 11k miles) I am very disappointed and concerned this could happen. This type of malfunction/defect should not be happening on any new car, whether it is a base brand or luxury brand car.

Overall problem: Audi Q5 2020 appears to have a computer malfunction that instantly disables all systems. Vehicle shut itself off at a brief stop and became very difficult to control, rolling into intersection. Details: I stopped car at residential neighborhood stop sign (brief and complete stop, no wait), immediately ready to proceed forward. Audi's auto stop/start feature shut off the engine, then immediately all electronics shut down. The car basically turned itself off. vehicle then began drifting/coasting into intersection. Controls were unresponsive. I realized the power brakes and power steering were disabled. I braked very hard, which stopped the car. Had to keep brakes pressed very hard to keep car from moving. Ignition button was unresponsive. I then noticed a small message on the dashboard controls which read something like start/stop ignition system disabled put car in p. (this was the only working electrical feature I noticed, the event was frightening and disorienting, but I'm fairly sure nothing else was functioning). I then shifted gearshift to park, and was able to start the car and drive away. I reported problem to dealer. Dealer claimed to inspect vehicle, and said they were unable to find anything wrong. Dealer said vehicle's computer had no record/memory of the incident. Dealer also seemed resistant to properly documenting the incident on their paperwork. I reported the problem to Audi corporate in auburn hills mi, explaining I no longer felt safe driving this car, and would not drive it again. Audi claimed to perform their own investigation, and their brief reply said that they were not obligated to do anything under applicable lemon laws. Car was in 3rd month of lease, ~150 miles. Previously I drove an Audi a4 2017 for 3 years so I was/am very familiar with the way Audis operate.
I have been driving on the highway and city and it appears the steering is sometimes stiff and then soft , I have checked the power steering fluid level and its full. This is an issue because its hard to make turns as the steering wheel stiffens up. Another issue is the car consumes about 1 quart of oil every 300 miles, it was part of a lawsuit settlement but the vehicle was never repaired.

Audi Q5 prestige, 2019. Problem with active lane keeping assist. Keeping the car in the middle of the line works perfectly. The problem is with the driver attention detection. The system says I am not driving, even I just (15 seconds) have change the line, my self with blinkers! alert comes up every minute on straight road, terrible! what is more the lka can disable(deactivate) itself in the middle of a turn or curve, and without any alert or notification. This lka assistant is lovely, but needs software update, or just increasing latency for not diving alerts etc. The problems appear every time you drive, everywhere, every weather conditions. Extremely annoying and in my opinion dangerous. The lka works better in kia, shame on Audi!!!.
2013 Audi Q5 premium plus. The problem is with the steering wheel , it acts weird and feels different than usual. It feels softer and then stiff during the same maneuver when driving the car and turning on a different city street , at speeds lower than 40 mph . The vehicle has about 86 k miles.

We were about 350 miles into a 600 mile drive. Stopped at a rest area to exercise the dog and visit the restroom. Outside temperature was 97 degrees. The car was running fine with no steering issues. The car was shut off for about 7-8 minutes. Upon restarting the Q5 tdi, the dash indicator for dynamic steering control lit up along with a do not drive warning. We had the car towed to an Audi dealer. They said that the entire steering rack needed to be replaced. To date, it sits at the Audi dealer without repair waiting on their customer service team to respond to my complaint. They initially said that Audi could help if they had more "history" on the car. I just bought it as an off-lease and post-diesel quarantine six months ago. This is our first Audi and haven't had reason to visit a dealer for repair yet. Audi's second comment was that we have no history at the local dealer. It is odd that the same part on the sq5 has been recalled, but not on the Q5. Audi needs to own a bad part regardless of which model it is included.
At the stationary my steering is very stiff, and is very hard to turn it. I almost hit the parked car and the person standing next to it when I was pulling out from the parking lot. Also the dealership diagnostic is that the steering shaft is has the tendency to seize up and look and is very dangers. I have contacted the Audi USA and they say is not their problem and they won't take any actions to fix this. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who complains about this. Audi is aware of the issue and according to the complaines on Q5 they improved the steering shafts, but don't won't to take care of the previous known issue to them. I am very concerned about safety of the surroundings and for my family safety driving this vehicle, according to them when I report the issue they say that I don't have strong case.

After driving the vehicle and parking, went to restart after engine was off for approximately 3. 5 hours, heard an alarm sound upon start up and the message displayed "steering defective" do not drive vehicle. The power steering was non functional had no other option but to drive without power steering as we were stranded out of state, arrived at our destination, turned off vehicle, warning light turned off and power steering resumed, car sat overnight, upon start up the following morning the alarm went on again with warning lights illuminated again, turned car off and did not drive, car sat for 10 hours and upon start up power steering returned and drove to dealership where purchased and they could not get the system to repeat the defective steering warning illuminate, ran the codes and could not diagnose, transferred to an Audi dealer who in turn diagnosed it with a faulty steering (same as the sq5's which have the recall) Audi refuses to cover under warranty. Car only has 41k miles on it.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Audi Q5. While turning the vehicle, the steering seized. The contact almost crashed into an oncoming vehicle due to the failure. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Audi of queens (30-35 college point blvd, flushing, NY 11354, (929) 297-0700) where the vehicle was currently being diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 96,000.
Update on NHTSA tracking number 11184036 I received a call from the Audi service area where my car was towed yesterday for a fix to the steering problem (alarm telling me not to drive due to unsafe steering and a locked steering wheel) Audi refuses to replace any steering related parts unless the problem happens a second time. Since this seems to be a very cold weather problem, I will have to wait until next winter since the extreme cold is probably over for this year as we enter spring. Just hope it doesn't happen while driving on a highway.
I drove my car early in the morning to church and, on the way home, stopped at a supermarket. It was very cold, minus 15 degrees at the time in bozeman, montana. When I came back to the car to start to go home, there was a very loud alarm and a warning - steering defective - unsafe to drive. I turned the car off and tried to restart it and the same loud alarm and warning occurred. I waited 5 minutes and tried again and got the same result. I got the car towed to my nearby Audi dealer to be fixed. Then I did some research and saw that this steering issue is a real problem with Audi Q5 and sq5, but only the sq5 has had a recall. Apparently there is a lot of controversy about this problem, sometimes requiring a steering rack replacement and other times software. In any event, Audi knows abut this dangerous problem. What if I was on the highway with my baby grandson in the car? I discovered a lot of very negative info on the Audi world forums dating back as far as early 2016 concerning the 2015 sq5. Same seems to be the problem with the Q5. Apparently on transport canada's website the sq5 steering has been recalled, but not the Q5. In light of the emissions scandal in which the car company (Volkswagen) deliberately deceived on emissions, I am thinking that they are a rather untrustworthy company from which to buy a car. I will get rid of mine for safety's sake as soon as I can! the car is still at the dealer for repair, and I have not heard from them since early this morning. I tried to reach the service area for an update, but as yet have not heard back. I have 4 months left on my warranty. And the car has less than 12,000 miles on the odometer. This is scary.
The steering locks-up and is extremely hard to turn in either direction while driving. The same condition exists in the stationary position.
It was an unusually cold day (-14 degrees) in michigan. I had been driving the car earlier that day without incident. I parked the car in the garage and approximately 1 hour later I went to use it and I was presented with loud warning beeps and the following message: "steering defective! do not drive vehicle!" it was obvious that the (electric) power assist was not functioning. I tried every hour and after about 4 hours the error was gone and the power steering seemed to be working correctly. It has been fine since. I called the dealer about the issue but did not bring it to them for a "diagnosis". I noticed a recall (15v-452) for the 2015 sq5 for this exact problem and wondered why an sq5 would be different from my 2015 Q5 (with a 3. 0l v6 engine). There are quite a few people on the internet complaining about the same issue during very cold days and I'm trying to understand the root cause. The recall is nothing more than a software update. (maybe to expand the acceptable threshold values?) I am concerned that the recall was not scoped properly and is actually affecting other Audis. I am a former vw/Audi mechanic with over 30 years of mechanical experience.
Notchy steering when driving. Noticeable during both city and highway driving, however it is more noticeable during small turns such as changing lanes on the highway. Occurs on both left and right turns. Issue is ongoing and can be dangerous as notchiness can cause unexpected over steering. Not sure if I should add this but this is a wide issue across my searches. . Read more...
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Audi Q5. While driving 30 mph, the contact smelled a fuel odor. The contact pulled the vehicle over and shut off the engine. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful and the check engine indicator illuminated. Also, the electric power steering warning message appeared. Steering defective. Do not drive vehicle. This message came up as soon as I started the car from a parking lot. Towed it to Audi dealer. They found that its an Audi issue. Defective steering rack. Replaced it. $2500.
I was driving my car on a city street and the red light came on. " steering defective! do not drive vehicle!" at that moment the steering was disabled. It was very hard to move the steering wheel. Thank god I was on a low speed limit street. I got very scared and slammed on the brakes to avoid the accident.

Car has ~30000 miles. Drove it for 120 miles, turned car off at rest stop. Started car and an error indicator "steering defective, do not drive" appeared. Steering wheel would not turn. Repair shop diagnosed the problem as a failed steering assembly and noted that this issue was a recall item on the Audi sq5 but not on the standard Q5. They explained that if I were driving the vehicle at the time of the failure that it would have been very difficult to steer the car to safety. Called Audi and explained the problem and they said Audi could not assist or comment on the failure since the vehicle was no longer under the manufacture warranty.
