36 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2016

This vehicle has an electronic lock out on the steering wheel that prevent the steering from unlocking as the operator attempts to start the engine. The code read out to be a115 or a116. This is a known issue and BMW has not been asked by NHTSA to recall. Please works with BMW to remedy this faulty on their design. The following design was removed from steering column as BMW known this is a problem from start. This problem occurs while the vehicle is in park and refuses to release the steering column.

37 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2016

BMW 3 series, 2006, e90 body type. After inserting the key in the contact all power went off. I experienced twice such complete loss of power, for the entire vehicle: engine, doors, lights and even the key cannot be removed from contact. Once I touched the battery with a voltmeter and measured the voltage (that was perfect) the power came back. Though after the power was restored while driving to dealership the car started to behave erratically, windshield wipers starting by themselves, radio turning on and off, noise in the back of the car ( either speakers or electric). Dealership diagnosis identified the connector on power cable between the battery and the engine as the cause of the total power loss. The cable connector appears to be almost entirely corroded. Incidentally this very cable was subject of BMW voluntary recall but only for vehicles manufactured after 2007 ( rcdnn-13v044-8968(1). Pdf ). Though in my case it appears to be the other end of the same cable that is outside of the car body, exposed to corrosion. The part number cable subject of the recall appears to have been installed also on 2005 and 2006 BMW 3xx models though they were not included in the recall.

39 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2015

Pass. Restraint system fault message. Few days went by with this fault message coming on and off. Now its currently staying on. After searching on the web, I've found many other BMW owners with the same issue, but only a few models are covered under recall (08v384000). After search my (VIN) show no current recalls. Recall (08v384000) states 2006 year 3-series. How can this only be limited to some 2006 ,but not others with the same problems? vehicle has around 86k miles. Thanks.

40 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

My BMW does not fall into the recall that BMW published. After several lights appeared in my dash (airbag, brake, seatbelt) I had the disnostic tool looked up and received a fault code 93c3 seat occupancy detector, passenger . Looking on the web this seems to be a common problem.

41 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2015

My car was parked for a brief time and then, just before I was about to start my car, I noticed smoke coming from the glove box and when I blew on it, a fireball came out and the whole car went up in flames. Just a few days before, I had problems with my air-conditioning and had prior electrical issues that I had checked out at a BMW repair shop.

42 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2015

My wife was driving down a main street at rush hour. The car just stopped running and would not restart. To leave the vehicle my wife had to take her life in her hands to get across the busy street. It was fortunate that this did not happen on a busy freeway or she or someone else may have been seriously injured.

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 BMW 325i. The contact stated that there was a progressing failure with the air bag system in which the air bag warning light randomly flashed and then stayed lit. The vehicle was taken to the dealer more than three times and they refused to remedy the repair without having to do an extensive diagnosis and stated that he was not included in a manufacturer recall for the vehicle. The contact mentioned that as the failure progressed the navigational system failed to work and an error message displayed for an air bag malfunction. The contact was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 14v428000 (air bags) and 13v564000 (air bags). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The vehicle was not repaired for months with the failure progressing. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2014

Vehicle had a yellow steering wheel and lock display on the dash when I tried to start my car. After multiple attempt to start the car in every possibly way, it still did not start. Put key in, pulled it out multiple times; locked car, unlocked car; wiggled steering wheel while trying to start the car (push start). Noticed when key is pushed into key hole, it latches, but does not give any electrical power to the car, or release the steering wheel. Steering wheel was locked. Car has no power to other functions in car. Car can't be shifted into neutral to move car. The car is pretty much unusable.

47 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Passenger air bag warning lights comes on and off sporadically. This will cause air bags not to inflate in event of an accident. BMW issued recall for defective seat mats/sensor but they say my vehicle not covered by the recall and replacement is $1000. It is same defective seat mat as on other 2006 325i cars and should be included in recall.

48 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

Doors will not unlock from remote key or unlock button inside car or from doors handle inside or outside car and will trap passengers inside. Only driver side door opens with door key. Doors can not be locked from remote key except driver side door. Totally unsafe to drive for chance getting trapped inside car. No manual door open feature exists.

49 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2013

Battery was low and wouldn't start jump started the car and received a message that the seat belt restraint tensioner is bad. Has a seat belt with airbag symbol on the dash. . . Plus the vehicle started showing a symbol with a steering wheel with arrows then the car won't start until I shake the steering wheel several times. . . Was stranded for hours then finally it started. BMW has very low quality and problems. This is becoming very unsafe and not sure if I want my family in this unsafe vehicle.

50 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

The rear door lock is not working - the handles do not open the door from the inside - the lock actuator is faulty and needs to be replaced again. So far I have had the front door lock actuators and the rear driver side actuators replaced. BMW will not fix the actuators even though the part has been changed out before, is a known issue, and the actuators have been superseded two times by BMW.

51 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

After pushing the start button I get this message (not an error, a message): "electric steering wheel lock may prevent engine starting. Move the steering wheel so that engine can be started. " so the wheel locks itself all of a sudden I have to tow the car for no reason. Now dealer is suggesting to changing a part and some other dealer says it needs to be reprogrammed. Unbelievable. BMW doesn't even know the reason of this issue. .

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2013

My door lock actuator failed in the garage and I have not been able to open the doors either from outside or inside. It would have been dangerous if this had happened when the vehicle was occupied and there was an accident.

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2013

My car was having an oil leak when I sent my car to get check they found out the bolts are broken which I did my research and I found out is a manufactures defect, because this bolts are place no to be taken off. This leakage has my car going crazzzy when I wash my car and I turn my fog lights on all the lights on my dash go on my engine goes off and smells like is about to burn this is a serious problem.

The failure mileage was 92,000 and the current mileage was 93,000.

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2013

I have a faulty passenger side seat occupancy sensor failure, as diagnosed by the local BMW dealership. The failure code is 93c3, and the issue appears to have been previously recognized by the manufacturer, and partially remedied with either an extended warranty or recall, allowable on only particular VIN numbers. The recall / extended warranty applies to particular 2006 3 series BMW vehicles manufactured prior to January 2006. The 93c3 seat mat occupancy failure in my vehicle causes the airbag and seat belt lights to illuminate on the dashboard of the vehicle. BMW USA has advised that the recall does not impact my vehicle, even though the seats, and manufacture date are within the recall parameters. The local BMW dealership, as well as independent shops have all advised that the failure should, by all qualifying means beyond VIN number identification, be covered under the recall or extended warranty, as this is the same failure as vehicles impacted by the referenced recall. Referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 08v384000 the BMW 325i vehicle I own was manufactured in August of 2005, equipped with standard seat. BMW USA has stated within the recall that they don't know how many vehicles are impacted by this issue and has only elected to remedy this issue on a predetermined set of vehicles. The manufacturer, BMW has been notified of this specific issue, and provided no assistance. They advised that all repairs are to be customer paid, and have refused to honor their recall. As of 1/22/2013, the vehicle remains unrepaired and a safety hazard. Many others have the same issue, as documented by NHTSA complaints. BMW stated consequence of non repair: in this situation the front passenger air bags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system would not be possible.

56 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2012

The contact owns a 2006 BMW 325i. The contact stated that the vehicle informational system failed to notify that the battery was low and caused the vehicle to lose acceleration. The abs and the stability control light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The battery was replaced and the computer informational system was reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 24,162.

57 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2012

Tried to start car, put key in, pressed start button and an amber padlock icon appeared over a steering wheel icon - car won't start.

58 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2012

The vehicles electronic steering wheel lock mechanism has failed and vehicle will not unlock the steering wheel column nor start the vehicle with this problem in place. Hundreds of other complaints across the board with my same particular my (2006) can easily be found by a simple search on any given BMW blog/forum. This should definitely be a recall. What would happen if it had locked up while driving?? not safe at all and will certainly try everything I can to recoup the $1000+ I will be spending from BMW for the labor/repair that it will cost to have this ridiculous issue resolved.

59 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2011

Vehicle locks do not respond to unlock or lock command from key fob or from car unlock/lock switch. Hazardous problem, potential life risk for children.

60 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2011

My passengers and I were trying to get back into my parked car, but when I used my key fob to unlock the doors only the passenger doors unlocked while the driver's door didn't. I tried to unlock the driver's door by using the lock/ unlock button located in the car. This did not work, and it locked the passenger doors again. I then tried to unlock the doors simultaneously by trying the key fob and the manual lock/ unlock button inside of the car a few more times, but none of the doors unlocked this time. We all heard the car attempting to lock and unlock, but the locks were not moving. I wasn't able to unlock any of the doors with the key fob or with the door lock/ unlock button inside the car, (the passengers were already in the car) so I used the emergency cut-out key located inside of the key fob to manually open the driver's door to get in. When I stopped to get gas on the same night, I found out that the gas cap was also locked, so we left. When we arrived back at my residence, everyone climbed out of the driver's seat. Finally, this morning after I manually unlocked the car with the emergency key, I noticed that the seat memory was also unresponsive. With less than 1/8 of a tank left, I will have to tow the car to the dealership because it will not make it on the gas left in the tank. This is a serious issue because if we were to have gotten in any type of accident or were in some unforeseen trouble while in the car with only seconds to react and get out of the car, it would have most likely ended up in multiple fatalities because of the inability to get out of the vehicle in a hasty manner. Please investigate and recall this issue before something like this does happen during and/ or after a car accident and people die because they are trapped in a car due to the electrical/ lock malfunction. Thank you.

61 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2011

Water pump and thermostat both quit working at the same time. Causing absolutely no warning on the vehicle until it started overheating and smoking while driving on the highway. Could of caused a serious accident. Needed to immediately pull to shoulder. Note: car has no oil temperature gauge.

62 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2011

The steering column lock was yellow, then went red and would not start. My mechanic got hit to go back to yellow, took it to BMW and they said the steering column needed to be replaced. Took the car home and to another mechanic who replaced the column, but it did not resolve the issue. Everyone tells me the case needs to be replaced.

63 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The passenger seat occupancy detection module is faulty in our car. It was officially diagnosed by a BMW dealer on 20 Feb 2012. We are being told that our car's production time falls 1 month out of the previous recall on these same parts (NHTSA action number ea080001). BMW is refusing to fix it.

64 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2011

I drive a 2006 BMW 325i. Parked my car and got out just fine however my 3 passengers were unable to open there doors. The central unlocking button on the car's dash wouldn't unlock the doors and the keyless entry button wouldn't unlock the door either. All the passengers had to climb out the windows. After doing some quick research this appears to be a common problem in the 3 series however it's a problem that BMW refuses to fix unless the car is still under warranty. Having passengers become unexpectedly trapped inside their car due to a common defect is major safety issue and it's a problem BMW should be forced to fix regardless of whether the car is still under warranty.

65 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2011

Central door locking system failed preventing any of the 4 doors and fuel door from opening. Passengers couldn't open their doors and had to crawl up front to exit through the drivers door. There was no other way for them to exit the car, the doors were completely inoperable. Replaced 15a fuse with 20a fuse as reccomended by BMW dealer which worked for a couple of weeks. Problem resurfaced so I inspected the fuse previously replaced to discover it was blown again. Now all power door locks work except front passenger. This issue really needs to be investigated soon. When there is a door unlocking failure, which according to many pages of complaints online is a very common occurrence with these cars, there is absolutely no way for passengers to exit - especially if they needed to exit quickly. It's very dangerous.

66 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2011

Doors lock, but only driver door unlocks. Used key only unlocked drivers door, used button on dash only unlocked drivers door, fob only unlocked drivers door. Other three doors not unlocking.

67 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

Passenger airbag / seat belt light came on and would not go out. There were multiple NHTSA recalls (pe07-045) and (ea08-001) but my VIN falls outside of the recall because apparently I have sport seats. There are numerous complaints on various sites about this issue. Bmwna stated they won't offer to fix the issue since the vehicle was not included in the recall. Dealers charge $1000+ to fix this defect.

68 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 BMW 325xi. The contact stated while driving 30mph both the front passenger side air bag warning sensor on off switch, and air bag warning sensor illuminated, at the same time. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for a failure diagnostic, and the contact was informed the VIN did not qualify, for a voluntary recall, under (defective mat sensor). The vehicle sensor was repaired, using the same remedy, despite the VIN not qualifying. The failure mileage was 43,000, and the current mileage was 50,000. Rds.
