If doors are locked. Sporadically it is not possible to unlock and open the driver or passenger's front door from the inside using door handle. It is possible to open doors if unlocked with "door unlock". This is a potential safety hazard as in the event of crash it wouldn't be possible to leave the car if electrical power is lost.

Rear spoiler malfunction appeared on my screen while I was driving roughly 30 miles per hour, then the rear spoiler began to smoke within 60 seconds. I pulled the car over to park it, and after another 100 seconds, the spoiler caught fire and within 180 more seconds the whole rear of the car was on fire. By this time the fire department showed up and extinguished the flames.

"takata recall" I was hit by a driver going approx 100mph on highway 50e from behind and after being severally hit my tekata airbag damaged my chest, hurt my face, burned my clothes, arms, and made it impossible to breathe. This wouldn't have happened if BMW had more availability to inform, replace and fix such a horrific event.

The central locking function stopped working. The unlocking does not work through the key fob or the central unlock/lock button within the vehicle. Only the driverside door is able to be unlocked by pulling on the inner door handle. The other 3 doors are unable to be opened and pose a severe safety risk. The fix per BMW is to replace 15a fuses with 20a. This was already done to my vehicle in the past and the problem has appeared again. Disconnecting the battery overnight has also been a fix, but that does not work either.

My son's BMW (2011 BMW 328i xdrive) spontaneously combusted on Sep 4 2017 while he was driving back from work at 4 am on sunrise highway NY. Luckily he noticed sparks and smoke and pulled over and got out. The car fully burnt within 30 minutes.
When attempting to open both the driver and passenger side front doors, pulling on the handle twice would not unlock and open the door. The only way to exit the vehicle is by pressing the electrical unlock button. This happens intermittently, the date below is only one of the many occurrences. The dealer has attempted to fix it 4 times. None has been successful. This is a safety issue. If we needed to exit the car and the electrical system was disabled, we would be unable to. I have videos of this happening but the form won't let me upload them.
The driver side door does not reliably (I. E. <50% of the time) open from the inside using the door handle when the vehicle is stationary. Instead I have to press the central unlock button on the dashboard (an electrical mechanism) to unlock the door prior to being able to open it with the door handle. This is a common problem with these cars and is a massive safety risk - e. G. In the event of an accident the driver might be unable to exit the car.
While driving on the on the freeway I felt and heard a popping or clunck noise while shifting like something was going to fall off and it became hard to control and steer so I took my 2000 328i BMW into a professional mechanic and he said the problem is the subframe is separating from the body of the car, I was also told this is a manufacturer defect. I looked up online and this exact same thing is happening to other models of the BMW , I dont drive my car hard and it is well maintained and I believe BMW should recall this factory error and pay for it.

The welds securing the passenger side fuel strap bracket to the body failed while driving around 45mph on a smooth road. I noticed a metal scraping noise and pulled over. The bracket was still attached to the strap and was dragging on the ground until I took it off. The failure happened during completely safe conditions, with no warning signs of failure. Inspection of the bracket and area of the frame suggests that the tack welds were defective. If the failure had happened at highway speeds or on a rough surface, it could well have caused a blowout of the rear tire and possibly dropping the gas tank. This defect is extremely dangerous. A quick search turns up dozens of accounts of the exact failure for this model.

BMW on fire. I had been driving on a city street for about 15 minutes when the engine caught on fire. I was stopped at a traffic light when I noticed smoke so it may have started while in transit. My car had no issues, no complaints about the car, engine or driving experience. At the time of the fire there were no warnings on the dashboard, no smell of fire or burning oil, no signs of engine issues while driving but while stopped at a red traffic light I noticed smoke coming from around the driver's front tire area and it escalated quickly. I was stopped waiting at a second-to-the-left turn lane surrounded by cars and nobody could move away. People in the car to my left panicked the most as they could see the smoke going their way and couldn't move their car, fortunately the light turned green soon and I was still able to drive to an empty parking lot of a fast food restaurant across from the traffic light. I parked, turned off the engine and when I opened the hood the engine was in flames. Management of the fast food restaurant rushed with a fire extinguisher but it was too late regardless. The next morning the car was towed to a BMW dealership where it was declared total loss by the insurance company before BMW even finished estimating the damage. Nobody investigated further eventhough I asked if they would given that my car seemed in perfect condition. BMW stated it was a rare instance however when I researched about it I found blogs of lots of more cases like mine. The insurance said it looked like an electrical fire. I would have purchased another BMW if anyone had cared enough to provide answers or at least follow up. I bought my BMW in 2014 certified pre-owned at the BMW dealership in a beautiful and perfect condition. I'm just glad I was able to stop, that the only property damage was my car and more importantly that nobody got hurt.

I had just left my house for work and was a few minutes down the street at a light when I saw white smoke coming from the dash/hood area. I pulled over and turned off the car and got out within seconds the car was up in flames. I could hear the car turning itself on even though it was off and I had the keys. The fire department came. My car literally burnt to the ground. They said it seemed like an electrical problem. If I wasn't at a stop, or if I was on the freeway the car filled so quickly with white smoke that I wouldn't have been able to see and could have crashed or been trapped. BMW did nothing and took no responsibility. They tried to offer me a discount towards a new BMW if I signed an nda. I know see all the news reports and wanted to make sure this was reported. This happened in 11/2016. I have video and photos.
I was on a well-paved road, approaching a highway on-ramp, travelling straight at about 40mph, and my sunroof spontaneously exploded. I had been on the road maybe 5 minutes, it was sunny and approximately 80 degrees out, there was no sudden change in temperature and there was no impact from flying debris, pot holes, other vehicles etc. Both my sunroof and visor were both closed at the time. I heard an extremely loud bang, similar to a gunshot but not as loud, I checked my mirrors and didn't see anything. I then opened the visor to my sunroof and glass rained down. I immediately closed my visor and proceeded to a safe section of the road where I cull pull off and inspect the exterior of my car. From the exterior, it looked like an explosion had occurred inside the vehicle as the glass was angled up and out, was completely shattered and had several large pieces missing. I filed a report with BMW as soon as the offices reopened and am waiting on further information. From what I can see, this is not the first instance of this occurring with BMW vehicles.
Motor mount bolts shearing off. Common problem that needs to be addressed with a safety recall.
The door lock actuators are known to be defective in that if one pulls on the handle, the door will not mechanically unlock by double-pulling the handle, meaning the only way to unlock the door is by using electronic unlock button. If the car is in a water accident, fire, or any other situation where the battery is no longer operable, the occupants will be trapped inside, unable to escape as the doors will not mechanically unlock by double-pulling the handle. BMW is aware of the issue and has a replacement part, however if the vehicle is out of warranty they will not fix it voluntarily.
My family and I left for vacation in the middle of the night and were driving on the interstate from florida to virginia. There were no other cars around since it was so late. We were driving at roughly 78 mph. We had the sunroof angled open. Suddenly, we heard an explosion, which sounded like a gunshot, and we were all covered in bits of glass. The sound was so sudden and loud that I nearly ran off the road. We realized the source of the falling glass was from our sunroof, which now looked like a dome. Something caused it to warp in an outward position. Tiny pieces of glass were falling on us like snow. We pulled off at a truck stop and vacuumed out the glass inside the car. Then, as we shut the car door, the left side of the sunroof collapsed, creating a gaping hole. We then bought duct tape to seal the entire structure so that we could make the rest of our 13 hour drive to our destination. When we arrived, my husband found a Ford dealership who gave us a huge sheet of window tape to help seal it off better. We then called the BMW manufacturer in greer, s. C. To file a complaint. . They advised me to take the car to our local dealership and have them document the problem. I was there today, 7/8/2016, and was told it would cost $400 to remove the headliner and complete a diagnostic test. I promptly walked out. I've read of hundreds of complaints about this exact situation happening to other people. Why is this type of glass not under a recall notice? I'm scared to death for my 16 year old to drive this car with the roof angled upward. No one, from what I've read, can seem to find any reason for the glass to completely change shape and explode. If glass can't hold up to highway speeds, why is it being used?! this is unacceptable.
Sun roof glass shattered while driving on smooth highway at about 65mph. No evidence of impact (per BMW dealer) and no impact by object detected by driver. No over passes or road signs were near the car at the time. Outside temperature in mid 80s and sunny. Air conditioning on in car. Large hole in middle of sunroof and most of the glass ended up on the highway behind the vehicle. Some glass was in the sunshade and came through the ventilation slots. BMW agreed to replace under warranty.
Driving down I-25 at 75 mpg on may 28 near berthoud, colorado my sunroof exploded. No trucks nearby. Normal traffic. Weather was about 70 deg f. No rain or hail. Luckily the slider was closed, otherwise we'd be covered in glass. The cars behind me were covered in glass, as was the road. Seems it's happened to a few BMW cars lately across the globe.
Twice while driving the car, the driver's car door flew open. There was no indication the door was not latched, nor did any alarms sound. This occurred as I was turning into heavy traffic on a busy 4 lane highway in town, and accelerating to 50 mph. I took the car into my BMW dealership and they told me it was a faulty actuator that was not covered under warranty, incurring a cost to me of $622. 00. I am appalled that this is not covered as a huge safety issue so feel this needs to be reported. . . .
Audible popping heard during any torque through rear of vehicle, cracks found on rear subframe while being inspected by local mechanic.
On December 1st I was rearended at interstate speed (65 miles per hour) just prior to impact I had turned my steering wheel to the right to lessen the impact to the vehicle in front of me. However it is clear from the damage to my vehicle that my car made contact on the driver side corner with the bridge as well as the entire passenger side of the vehicle made significant contact with the car in front of me. My car had been at a complete stop. No airbags went off causing me to suffer serious head injuries and scull fractures. In addition, upon impact, my car burst into flames. I was pulled unconscious from my burning car by bystanders with only moments to spare.
The drivers side back door will not open. Thankfully, it was realized in a non-emergency situation. After research it seems that this issue is popular among this year on this car.
Rear driver's side subframe mount point failure. The car has gone through class action suit in 2009, and was inspected by dealer in 2010. But it failed anyway. I was driving about 20mph on city streets going straight accelerating from a stop, but shifting gears from 2nd to 3rd (it's a manual transmission) when a loud explosive bang was heard from the rear with an alarming jolt. Inspection of undercarriage revealed that the floor pan where the rear driver side subframe mount attaches to has completely shattered, leaving that side of the rear axle floating. I have been advised by two independent mechanics that this is a dangerous failure and I should not be driving the car. I do not race this car, it has no rust in the undercarriage, and has never experienced snow. Mechanics believe this is a very dangerous failure and was shocked the car was never formally recalled for safety. . Read more...
Rear driver's side subframe mount point failure. The car has gone through class action suit in 2009, and was inspected by BMW in 2010--was told everything is ok and it will not fail since only ones with visible defect will fail. But mine failed anyway 5 years later. This shows even if the damage/defect is not visible it can manifest itself at any time. I was driving about 20mph on city streets going straight, accelerating from a stop, shifting gears from 2nd to 3rd when a loud explosive bang was heard from the rear with an alarming jolt that triggered an interial lock on seatbelts, made all occupants scream in shock and children crying. Inspection of undercarriage revealed that the floor pan where the rear driver side subframe attaches to has completely shattered, leaving driver side of the subframe, differential, and rear axle floating with chunks of sheetmetal from mount point missing. I have been advised by two independent mechanics that this is a dangerous failure and I should not be driving the car, and the only reason of failure is defect in the car. Mechanics believe this failure poses serious safety hazard saying it can easily separate the rear axle and if this happens while driving, the separated rear axle will pull on the emergency brake cable and lock it up, immediately stopping the car. If this happens on a freeway it can cause catastrophic collision incident, endangering lives. They were shocked the car was never formally recalled for safety. . Read more...
Door failed, unable to open from inside, outside or through key. I am an r&d engineer and upon evaluating the failure mode of the door I am concerned at a operators ability to escape a vehicle that is disabled and in a dangerous state. I would be surprised f this defect cannot be linked to fatalities.
Electronic door locks failed to unlock thus trapping myself in the car. No mechanical override exists to manually unlock the doors. I had to roll the window down and climb out through the window. The 4 door sedan has small windows and I hurt myself (pulled muscles and joints) climbing out. If the windows failed (they did not), I would have had to break the windows and then climb out. Elderly or handicapped occupants would not be able to get out! any power failure will trap occupants since no mechanical override exists!.
Driving at approximately 30mph passing vehicle allerted me of fire and smoke coming from my rear. As I slowed down flames and smoke increased. Smoke filled interior upon my exiting. Rear fire co0ntinued to burn until fire department. Dooused car with water. Police report taken. Car taken to repair shop and declared to expensive to repair.
Light cracks, chips, defects inside of headlight housing. Vehicles are not that old and the defect tends to appear on all f30 BMW 3 series models. Could worsen over time and create visibility issues.
Car front end shaking and banging. Brought to repair. Was told that the engine mounting bolts were sheared off. Need to have bolts removed and replaced.
Door locks would not open leaving me locked out of the car and stranded. Had to have the car towed 300 miles to get it back home where a BMW repair place was available. Had to replace both front door actuators at a cost of $600. 00 just to get back inside my car. If a baby was trapped in the car it could of died by the time it was to get anyone to help get the doors open. The most dangerous design I've ever heard of. Interior door handles will not work and no way to get out of the car if it happened while I was inside.
Hi, I think, this is a safety issue that BMW has to fix. My automatic car lock gets stuck and I can only open driver's side door and passenger side door doesn't open. The manual lever that is supposed to open the passenger side door and back door doesn't open the door. My wife and kids were stuck and some how manually they crawled out of the driver's side. It was very stressful and I was wondering if my son was 20yrs old, how can he come through the driver's side from the back seat. BMW is well aware of this issue and has not recalled the cars to fix the manual override when the automatic door opener doesn't work.
I was driving on I-84 and heard a loud explosion followed by what sounded like golf ball size hail hitting my car. Luckily, I was able to keep control of the car and pulled over when it was safe to do so. The sunroof of my car had exploded. There were no trucks in the vicinity, I was not going under an overpass, nor any other circumstance that could have caused the damage. I called BMW assist and was told to drive the car to the dealership. At the dealership it was determined that the sunroof exploded outward and that they would do an investigation as to why and fix the sunroof. This was not done willingly. I was also told that they knew of no other sunroof that this happened too. When I came home and did some research on line I discovered that is a fairly common problem. I will never feel comfortable driving this car again. I am thankful that my grandchildren were not in the car with me and that I did not panic and was able to get the vehicle off the road safely.
