Cruise Control Problems of BMW 328

BMW 328 owners have reported 5 problems related to cruise control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 04/02/2018

The contact owned a 2007 BMW 328i. While driving with the cruise control set at 75 mph and the heater at 70 degrees, there was an abnormal popping noise and a flash of light underneath the passenger side dashboard. The passenger air bag warning indicator illuminated. The contact stopped the vehicle and shifted the gear to the park position. Additionally, the contact smelled smoke inside the vehicle. Upon exiting and re-entering the vehicle, the cabin filled up with smoke and spontaneously caught fire. A police report was not filed. The fire department was contacted and extinguished the fire. No injuries were sustained. The vehicle was towed to an independent tow facility. The contact called BMW of concord (1967 market st, concord, CA 94520), but no further instructions were provided. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The failure mileage was 115,000.

2 Cruise Control problem of the 2016 BMW 328

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

This car was purchased new with the optional "active cruise control" (acc). Under certain conditions the car accelerates unexpectedly. When the brakes are applied by the driver, the acc engagement should always be terminated. In certain situations the acc remains engaged despite the driver's use of the brakes. When the acc is engaged and detects an object ahead, the brakes may be applied automatically by the acc. If, while the brakes are still be applied by the acc and the driver also presses the brake pedal, the acc should be disengaged and remain off. However, if the object previously detected ahead has cleared and the driver releases the brakes, the acc control is restored and the car accelerates. This is a dangerous and confusing response. Drivers instinctively expect any cruise control to disengage immediately and remain disengaged upon brake application. The BMW active cruise control does not perform this way in the situation described. This acc response is a repeatable defect that has caused me to experience a hazardous situation while driving.

3 Cruise Control problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/23/2014

Engaged cruise control on interstate and the vehicle immediately and aggressively accelerated. As the vehicle speed indicator approached the cruise control pipper, the pipper began to increase, staying about 5mph ahead of the speedometer needle. At approximately 95mph I disengaged the system using the control in the steering wheel. Information center displayed a "cruise control malfunction" error. Engaging the brake disengaged the cruise control, but once I release the brake pedal the cruise began aggressively accelerating again. Tried it once more off the interstate at approximately 30mph and vehicle displayed same symptom. Vehicle speed always appears to chase the cruise setting which increases steadily in relation to vehicle speed. Plan to contact dealer today.

4 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

When the cruise control arm is pushed forward to accellerate mile by mile, the arm sticks causing the car to accellerate uncontrollably until the cruise control is turned off or the brake is used to disengage.

5 Cruise Control problem of the 1997 BMW 328

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

1997 BMW 328i less than 80,000 miles. Driving 40mph with cruise control on. Snowing but straight level concrete road. Approaching asphalt curve entering small mountain village, I tapped brake to disengage cruise. It didn't disengage so hit it harder. Cruise started to accelerate and threw car into a skid. Tried steering column lever, no effect. Cruise now accelerated strongly, spun car 180, car slid into ditch at under 30mph and flipped over. Car driven back 600 miles to home but total loss from crushed in roof. BMW has possession of the car pending product specialist review. Cruise had started acting erratic on 4-5 occasions earlier that week being reluctant to disengage with two different drivers. After accident 3 witnessed that brake lights failed to light without excessive petal pressure. Many BMW owner reports of same problem on internet from britain. BMW service advisor stated it was probably the switch starting to fail. BMW dealer now has car and BMW corporate appears to have issued gag order to dealer employees.
