Starting Dec 1st, the check engine light displayed on my dash and the electrical system has malfunctioned for many features of my vehicle. I am unable to switch to sport & eco mode. The car also takes multiple tries to start the engine. It has been almost 4 months since the recall announcement and remediations are still not available. The engine coolant pump is a direct cause of short circuits and engine problems.

Engine is making weird noise and a mechanic told me it’s related to this recall that still has “no remedy” when it should’ve been a recall years ago when the cars first came out and this issue became more apparent. I do not want to keep driving the car I paid hard earned money for just for a manufacturer defect to destroy it.

Bought car from third party with rebuilt title 333,000 miles currently and has been recertified by state patrol in 2015. Control cluster says taillight failure, and has issues with not starting. When jump started the car has reduced power with transmission limp mode light. Sometimes light comes on with limp mode, other time no limp mode at all. Have replaced taillights, battery and alternator with no fix. Still having reduced power, have to jump start my car and have a taillight failure. Cars front tires rub when turning even though all parts have clearance. Electrical problems surplus with this car. Everything from the radio, heater, transmission and taillights works intermittently.

At random the car will display “drivetrain malfunction” which causes the car to shift into neutral and begins to slow down until it doesn’t move anymore. There is no check engine light or any other indicator of what might be the problem. The message just pops out of no where. It’s happen in the freeway making me scare to cause an accident because it so random. I’ve had to quickly turn my hazards and beginning switching lanes to avoid any accidents.

The contact stated while driving 70 mph the vehicle accelerated at high speed and the vehicle shut down completely and the warning message saying "transmission not in park" illuminated. The contact was able to pull over on the side of the road, and after the vehicle cooled down the contact was able to restart the vehicle and operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the fuel pump was replaced but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but no failure was found. While driving 70mph car went into neutral coasting to a stop. I had no control of the gas causing a dangerous sittuation as we coasted to the side of the road. After placing the vehicle into park, it would not start and needed to be towed. Vehicle could not be put into neutral for towing purposes. Repair shop said the timing chain had went out seizing and ruining the engine. 15k repair bill, very dangerous sittuation having no control over a vehicle at high speed highway driving!.

Engine revved uncontrollably without my foot on the gas pedal, I was forced to shut the engine off. The car behaved normally once the engine was restarted: I was turning left into a parking space in a parking lot at a very slow speed. My foot was off the gas pedal as I was braking and coming to a stop. Suddenly (with foot still on the brake and not the gas pedal) the engine revved to a high rpm which lurched the car forward a bit. Since I was already braking, I was able to react quickly and press down even harder on the brake pedal, which stopped the vehicle and kept it in place. The engine continued to rev and I shifted into park. The engine stayed revved at very high rpms as if I was flooring the gas pedal, even though I could look down and confirm that my foot was only on the brake. At this point I shut off the engine and waited several minutes. I checked the floor mat and confirmed that it was not out of place or affecting the pedals in any way. I then started the engine again and the car idled normally with no issues. I tested driving at a slow speed and pulled into several more parking spots to see if the issue would reoccur, but it did not. I drove home normally and parked without further problems, and will be taking the car to a mechanic as soon a possible.

While pulling slowly into a parking lane in a residential pulbic lot to park, the vehicle entered into a sudden high acceleration without any driver additonal input. It crashed on a tree at the parking lot perimeter with a major damage on the vehicle front end. It occurred at 10:30 am with driver in great health condition and had very limited time to react. No airbag was deployed nor any personal injury occured.

Drive train malfunction, rear right break light warning light is on will not go off, had the bulb changed and still not working. Drive train go on when trying to go into speed on all functions such as eco mode, normal mode and sport mode. Indicator light goes back to normal after car is completely off and upon start up light goes off. Right front tire when being driven sounds like a flat but when checked on the exterior, seem to be no damage to the tire.

3 days after receiving an oil change and brake pad change, while driving on a city street at approximately 25mph my car spontaneously switched into neutral and I could no longer accelerate. My dashboard stated that I had a drivetrain malfunction and that maximum output was not available. I proceeded to take my car into BMW in order to get a diagnosis. When I received the diagnosis I was told that my engine was non operable and I would have to pay ten thousand to change engine. The technician stated it was because of an internal engine failure, and that the reason for the failure was unknown but it was more than likely a bad oil filter. My vehicle has had two recalls concerning oil and I am concerned that it is a manufacturing defect. Thank you.

While driving at 65 mph or so the vehicle's on-board message center read "drive-train malfunction". I pressed on the accelerator and there was no response. The vehicle was loosing momentum quite quickly which required me to swiftly, but safely to pull over to the roadway edge. This is the third time the issue has presented itself. The first time was a few months from purchasing the vehicle. The dealer found metal shavings in the fuel lines. They replaced the entire fuel system and sent me off. A few months later I took the vehicle in for service I. E. Oil change, inspection, etc. While inspecting my car they again found metal shavings in the fuel lines. They again replaced the entire fuel system and said it was fixed. Just this weekend September 30, 2018, I was driving my vehicle on the freeway and again the car went limp. No power, limited steering control, no response from accelerator. Essentially a catastrophic event because without power a vehicle is a rolling projectile. According to the dealership the vehicle once again has metal shavings in the fuel system. Total count for replacing fuel system (3).

I was driving with an adult passenger on June 1, 2018 at approximately 3 pm on a public street, traveling straight at approx 40 mph. Conditions were dry and sunny. I pressed the brake at a stop light and the car stopped for a brief second and then lunged forward while the brake was still depressed. I put both feet on the brake and pushed hard to the floor. The car continued forward several feet and slowed to a stop. The engine was revving while I tried to stop and my passenger stated that the rpms increased rapidly. No warning lights came on or engine warning. I was approx 2 miles from the BMW dealership so I slowly drove my car there, putting it in neutral each time I had to stop. I explained the situation, they reviewed the car and found nothing wrong. The car has a history of idling high/fast, which I also relayed to the dealership. There were no obstructions near or under the brake pedal and I did not accidentally step on the gas. I am canceling my lease tomorrow.

Vehicle began not responding to gas input and turbo started going out. Diagnostic appeared to reveal waste gate operator malfunction, but further analysis showed complete turbo replacement required. Vehicle began making high pitched noise at various points (idle and acceleration). Less than 90k miles on vehicle.

When driving at a low speed of 10 mph or lower and decelerating (applying the brake, coming to a stop sign or red light or pulling into a parking space) or at a stationary position - the vehicle is surging forward unexpectedly. Engine is not stalling but often feels like it could after surging forward. Surges forward even when the break is applied. This has happend a number of times. Taken to BMW dealerships and they report nothing wrong (no safety recall) but it continues to occur. Fear factor of getting into an accident due this is escalating. Have asked friends to drive our vehicle and they verify and validate it occurs for them as well under the same cirmcumstances.

Garvey Ave. Rosemead, CA 91770 ), absolutely I slowed down my car and approaching the parking space. When my car 's front tires touch one side of the pavement ( there are 2 pavements separated apart about 3 feet with soil where are planted with flowers, each pavement is approximately 1/2 foot thick and 1/2 foot high ). While I stepped on my car's break pedal, I felt the car suddenly lost control and it jumped on my side's pavement, and almost at the same time, both air bags burst, made the car ran over to almost a half of the distance between 2 pavements ( about more than 2 feet ) and hitting the rear of another parking car ( on opposite side of my car's parking space ( lot ). I didn't know what reason had made the breaking system didn't function well, then the car jumped on the pavement, and both air bags suddenly burst, made the car madly jump over to another side of parking space ( opposite side ) and made the accident serious ( 1 car's rear almost was crashed, another car's rear on the other side of parking space was hit by this car' s head . Finally, the police came to make the report, and my car was towed away to my friend's parking lot. After 1 week, I called the repair shop which fixed my car;s break system in June. While driving the car, it loses power completely and the engine shuts off. This has happened several times while driving on the freeway at high speed. It is a very dangerous situation, as the car quickly decelerates and power steering no longer works. I have been incredibly lucky to be able to get to the side of the highway after losing power each time (it has happened on the freeway 5 times now). The car will not start after it loses power and puts up a random check engine error. Sometimes, after sitting for a period of time, it will start up, but this seems to be completely random, as it happens sometimes, but not always. I have taken the vehicle to BMW several times now and they have replaced several parts and assured me it is fixed, but it keeps happening. I am now very concerned for my family's safety. I realize the car is a 2009 model, and it has a little over 100,000 miles on it, but this type of power loss should not be happening over and over again, especially when it has been taken to the BMW dealer. I have specified the last incident in the "when did this happen" question below, but the problem started about 6 weeks ago.

On three separate occasions, when my car was stopped at a light or stopped in bumper to bumper traffic, the car reved to 6 or 7000 rpm and then accelerated on its own. I could not stop the car and I hit the car in front of me. There was very little damage to my car, and little damage to the othei do not feel safe in this car as I know there is a problem and will happen again.

This vehicle suddenly shut off in the middle of the intersection. The entire car shut off and would not start again. You could not put the car in neutral either to get it off the road. The car would not move. This vehicle was on a 6 lane road starting to go from the intersection. I know this has happened to another person with an x3 as well. BMW is claiming this doesn't happen. I was driving a ralph schomp BMW loaner at the time because my 2017 x3 was in the shop. I have the other person's information should you need it. This is a huge safety issue. The other person this happened to was on a highway when it happened. It is unknown to me what caused this, but the vehicle flashed lights and told me to turn off the car. When I did, it would not start again. I am concerned that BMW is hiding this problem since I know the same dealership has had this issue before with the same vehicle. This is a loaner dealer car with an automatic transmission. I was exiting a state highway, turning right onto the exit ramp to slow at a traffic signal, and applied the brake pedal with my right foot. I slowed from 45 mph to about 10 mph, with my right foot on the brake pedal. The engine revved and raced up to about 6500 rpm as I held my right foot on the brake pedal. With much braking force, I did get the car to slow and stop. I then pressed the park button and hit the stop button to kill the engine. After a few moments, I then re-started the car and pulled over to the curb. I did return the loaner car to the dealership. To be absolutely clear, I have been driving for 30+ yrs, and I was not racing, speeding, drunk, nor driving with both feet. Something made the engine race very high, and I was lucky not to plow into the cars in front of me. I hope this can be investigated and resolved so no one gets hurt. Thank you.
