36 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2015 BMW 328

Failure Date: 02/27/2015

On Friday, February 27th, 2015, my wife and my two daughters, ages 19 and 21 were traveling back up the garden state parkway. They were driving in my wife’s new 2015 BMW 328xi and the car was in "sports mode. " my wife who is a very experienced driver, and never had any problems, was driving. At about 4:30 pm, after exiting the parkway they got to a nearby intersection and planned on turning left to go to the local market. However, when they approached the intersection, my wife was not able to stop her car. She pressed on the breaks but they were not responding properly and the car started jerking back and forth and skidding towards the center of the intersection, where other cars were driving by at high speeds. My wife continued to press as hard as she can on the break but the car did not come to a full stop until it was in the center of the intersection. Luckily, no car was coming by at the exact moment of the incident, but if there had been another car, the break failure, in the context of the defective sport mode, probably would have caused an accident. They also pulled on the parking brake, attempted to switch to park and to turn the engine off in order to stop. Finally, totally traumatized and still having post traumatic stress and fear to get back behind the wheel, instead of turning left, my wife and daughters decided to turn right and very very slowly drive home 2 blocks away, totally traumatized by what had just happened.

37 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 09/26/2014

While pulling into a parking at low speed vehicle accelerated violently causing it to crash over the curb and airbags deployed. Minutes before this crash I noticed several instances where the vehicle seemed to accelerate and rpm rised on its own while I was not pressing the accelerator. The drivers side door airbag seems to have malfunctioned and did not deploy.

38 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

A letter from BMW came in June 2014 stating that my vehicle is effected for important safety recall and that I would be notified when the parts become available to have it fixed. The recall was for vanos assembly bolts. The letter states that I may hear increased noise, check engine light may come on leading to reduced power leading to engine stall. I noticed on this website many people have had similar complaints and leading to steering wheel to lock and engine to shut off which can lead to injury and death of anyone on the roads. I have called my dealer as well BMW headquarters and both state that they have no idea when the parts will become available. So for now I have to drive a car with a safety recall and I can do nothing about it other than hope I don't cause an accident due to my car malfunctioning. This is criminal of BMW and needs to be addressed. I asked them if I could bring my car in and have a loaner instead till the parts become available but was turned down, unless I want to pay out of my own pocket. This needs to be addressed! thank you for protecting americans on the road!.

39 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

Unable to accelerate safely, engine gives out intermittently at varying speeds. Called every dealership around alpharetta, GA; gwinnette BMW told me they wouldn't work on it or help me and then hung up-all on a recorded line. Still waiting for a manager to call me. Called another dealer and they said to wait a few hours and try again meanwhile I can only hope my car doesn't shut off on my during rush hour or on my way to work. This has been on ongoing issue with the f30 BMW 3 series as many customers indicated this issue for at least two years.

41 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 BMW 328

Failure Date: 01/04/2014

While driving to work on the interstate my car began to hesitate and would not accelerate. The following day the check engine light came on and the problems with hesitation became worse and the car would not go over 50 miles per hour on the highway and would almost stall when I came to a stop. Took car in for service and they stated that there was a failining ignition coil in cylinder #3 which was replaced. On 11/28 the car starting doing the same thing. I had to take it to a different dealership that was closer to my work because the car would not accelerate on the highway and I felt very unsafe. At this time the car has 53440 miles on it. Right out of warranty! I called both dealerships and come to find out this is a known issue with this model BMW. I was charged $681. 06 for a known issue and this being the 2nd time my car has had this issue. This time the failure was in cyliders 2 and 6! and was told to pay to replace all as they will continue to fail! I contacted the dealership BMW of towson and never received a return call. I should not have been charged for this service as BMW of catonsville would have done the replacement for free as this is a known issue with this car. I couldnt drive all the way to BMW of catonsville because my car would now accelerate on the highway. I am continuing to look for a refund of $681. 06 as I should not have been charged for something that BMW should have recalled.

42 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 07/15/2013

Throttle response to pressing accelerator lags dangerously. Have had numerous instances where lack of response has placed me in dangerous situations. Sometimes it takes a few seconds before there is adequate response so car does not move or accelerates very slowly even though accelerator pressed down all the way. Almost got rear-ended last night as I pulled out of a driveway onto a road and oncoming cars nearly rear-ended my car because my 2011 BMW 328i would not respond appropriately to my pressing down on the accelerator pedal; the car barely accelerated and even slowed further for a few seconds before the throttle responded and began picking up speed. This is very dangerous. I had this car in for service at the BMW earlier yesterday and they service advisor told me that this is a common problem for these cars, but they don't have a fix for it.

43 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

I was driving home on the highway during a rainstorm when the 4x4, breaks warning came on. The handling immediately was affected. I didnt feel the traction I was used to and breaking became dangerous. I wanted to pull over but the breaks made the car stop too abruptly, causing me to skid on the wet road. Had the highway been busier I'm sure I would've been in a serious accident. I consider myself very lucky. I took my car to a local mechanic. I was told that it was the transfer case actuator gear. It's plastic and the intense heat causes it to fail. I was told this problem is very common. . . . So much that the replacements are made of of a different composite and more heat resistant. My question is why do I have to pay for a gear that is recognized as faulty. If the replacements are better than the original then obviously BMW recognizes that too. This is becoming way to common for BMW not to react.

44 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

At approximately 4:15 pm on 4/18/13 I was driving on a busy roadway at approx 35mph in my 2007 BMW 328xi coupe, 65540 miles. All of a sudden the vehicles indicator light flashed orange for coolant temperature warning. Within 5 sec the indicator flashed red and the engine shut down as I proceeded through an intersection. There was no acceleration and I was left to coast out of the intersection. Luckily the intersection was slightly down hill so I was able to coast to the curb without being t-boned. Apparently this engine shut down is a designed feature in this model BMW (2007 328xi) to save the engine in the case of overheating. While this feature means well it is an extreme safety issue as other BMW customers have reported similar events while traveling on interstates and speeds up to 80mph (see bimmerforums and aboutautomobile). This type of event in certain situations could absolutely lead to loss of property and/or life. The air temp was approx 85f and I had been driving the car for more than a 30min in pre-rush hour traffic before the event. At the time, traffic was not stop and go and I was moving at a fairly consistent 30mph. There was less than 10-15 sec between the first coolant warning flashing orange, proceeding to red, and engine shut down. These were the only indicative warnings of a problem. The oil temperature was around 230f. After letting the car cool for several hours I checked the coolant which was in the normal range. I was then able to drive the car the remaining 1. 5 miles to my home. At home, I was able to replicate this overheating shut down event by turning the ac on and revving the engine from 2000 to 3000 rpm at a standstill. After about 5min, once again the indicator panel flashed orange, 5 seconds later red, leading to engine shut down almost immediately. This yet again replicated the short 10 sec warning before complete engine shut down.

45 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 02/26/2013

I was driving on highway georgia 400, which is one of the most traveled highway's in atlanta, georgia. Cars frequently travel 20-30 mph above the speed limit and if you do not go at least 75 mph, then you are obstructing the flow of traffic. My 2007 BMW 328xi sedan was traveling at about 80 mph until an orange engine overheat light came on, then quickly turned red. Immediately the safety mechanism kicked in which restricts my speed and I could no longer accelerate. I was in the fast left lane and tried to pull over on the left hand shoulder but there is not enough space. I was trying to accelerate to at least pull over to the right hand lane, but could not. Luckily the flow of traffic was not it's usual busy nature and cars behind me were honking as I kept trying to get over to the right shoulder (as cars were traveling high speeds). The engine noise was getting louder and louder. I limped over to the right hand shoulder and shut off the engine as it sounded like it would explode. I could smell smoke as well. The water pump ended up quitting on me, causing the engine overheat. However, no warning at all and no indication that allowed me to take pre-caution before I traveled in my car. This is simply outrageous and a design flaw. This is an extreme safety issue. Your engine suddenly quitting on you, with no warning on a major highway system? cars in every lane traveling at least 75 mph or greater while you are quickly reducing in speed trying to pull over? on top of that, there is no reading in my car for engine temperature. BMW needs to fix this or someone will die because of it. Many may get lucky they are on a side road or in a safe location when their water pump goes out. However, many are on the highway when this happens! three people worked on my car the last month and all say no way to determine when your water pump will blow. No excuses for this!.

46 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 BMW 328

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

While slowly coming to a stop, the brake pedal became hard yet the car would not stop and seemed to glide for 10-15 feet before finally stopping at which point the engine revved to 6000 rpm, but did not accelerate. The pedal became so hard that I could not press any harder, yet was still slowly moving. Turned the car off and restarted the car and drove to the dealer. The dealer could not find anything wrong. On 7/15/2013 the exact same thing happened again as I was pressing the brake pedal I could feel the car continuing to move forward and the brake pedal became very hard yet still did not stop the car. As soon as the car finally stopped the engine revved to 3500 rpm, at which time I shut it off. Car is back at the dealer and Bmwna has been notified of both episodes.

47 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 01/11/2013

2011 BMW 328i. Consumer writes in regards to air bag malfunction. The consumer stated after the vehicle was purchased, she noticed when driving at a speed of 10 mph or lower, applying the brake, or pulling into a parking space, the vehicle would surge forward unexpectedly. The consumer experienced the same surging for a second time, as she pulled into a parking space. The vehicle went over a curb and into some bushes. As a result, she received whip-lash to her neck and slightly bruised her elbows, knees and hurt her chest on the steering wheel. BMW sent an engineer to inspect the vehicle and concluded nothing was wrong with the vehicle. After picking up the vehicle a week later, the consumer and her husband continued to experience the same issue. A month later, the consumers husband pulled into a parking space when the vehicle unexpectedly surged forward and hit a parked SUV in front of him, which caused damage to the front bumper. The vehicle was returned to the dealer, where they kept it for 2 weeks. The dealer stated the vehicle was fine and it was ready for pick-up. However, 2 days later the vehicle surged again, as the consumer was approaching a stop light. The consumer stated the vehicle has been inspected 3 times, without any success of finding the problem. The mechanism/gear would shift when driving at a low speed or riding the brake at a low speed when coming to a stop. Also, the vehicle sagged on the right side, which has been acknowledged by the mechanics, but it cannot be fixed. Updated 05/13/14.

48 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 BMW 328

49 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 11/25/2011

Constant daily issue with BMW. When the car is stopped at a light or at a merging intersection, when I try to step on the accelerator to move the car, it has a 2 second delay before it moves. However if I have the dtc (dynamic traction control) on there is no issue. Apparently there is a mountain of complaints on the online car forums regarding this; but no resolution from BMW on this known issue with their cars. Please help! this delay/lag can easily cause death or injury if not dealt with.

50 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328i. The contact stated that while sitting idle at a traffic stop, he noticed that the vehicle would slowly surge forward autonomously. On one occasion, while driving into a garage, the vehicle abnormally accelerated and crashed into a pillar. The contact was not injured. 51 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 BMW 328

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

Soon after purchasing my 2009 BMW 328i (with a manual transmission), I had the dealer install BMW customized 328i rubber floor mats. The mats have a fitted slot for the gas pedal and anchors to prevent them from moving after installation. Unfortunately, the length of the mat on the driver's side is too short for a vehicle with manual transmission. When you depress and release the clutch, it catches the top edge of the mat and lifts it up, covering the clutch and the brake pedal. When you put your foot back down, you end up stepping on the mat, partially depressing the brake and/or clutch while the car is in gear and moving. I've taken the vehicle back to the dealer several times to have them adjust the installation but they can only move it a few inches because of the gas pedal slot, so the problem wasn't fixed. I don't drive this vehicle very often but last month (9/2012) I finally got fed up and contacted BMW to let them know their rubber mat design has a safety flaw and that I was filing a complaint with NHTSA. They recorded my complaint but said there would be no additional follow-up. So, for safety reasons, I have now removed the driver's mat from the vehicle.

52 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 11/22/2007

New BMW 3 series sports wagon self-accelerated and crashed into the family's garage. Minutes before the crash, the car was slowing down as it was being driven onto the driveway of the house, which is perpendicular to the road. Soon after the car the garage door lifted with the steering wheel in a turn position (onto the driveway), the car started to move as through it was accelerating on its own and quickly crashed into the garage. It only stopped from the impact of hitting and breaking a structural house column and a pile of sheetrock in the garage. The engine was running, when it stopped. The entire event took place in less than a minute.
