Failure Date: 06/13/2022

In regards safety recall 21v-907, the BMW dealer does not have a remedy yet; however in October 2021 they stated that the intake manifold needed replacement due to heavy buildup and it was replaced. The recall issued in November 2021 states that the leakage from the faulty egr valve could contaminate the intake manifold and the replacement should be done free of charge. They charged me $1,281 + labor in their invoice # 6436354/1 from 10-29-2021 and they refuse to reimburse me, alleging that there is no remedy available and referred me to Bmwusa. Com/recalls. BMW corporate states that the dealer should reimburse me for a "treated act reimbursement". At his point I'm not sure if it is safe to use my car.

41 Power Train problem of the 2013 BMW 328

Failure Date: 03/10/2022

I recently had my car serviced and the oil changed over the summer, so there were no warning indicators or service issues prior to this incident. I left for work and had no indications of any problems. I drove for about 10-15 minutes when a warning notification popped up stating engine oil pressure low. A few seconds later, the check engine light came on with a notification there was a "drivetrain malfunction". The car started to decrease speed significantly and I pulled over as soon as I could. I turned the car off and waited a couple minutes, then tried to turn it on. The car power/battery was still working properly, but the engine did not start. I had the car towed to the dealership that I use. I was notified that the drivetrain malfunction is due to "timing chain components failure" and the cost is approximately $16,000. I have taken care of any previous recalls and there are no open recalls that exist currently. In 2014, the same situation occurred, in the same car, where I also received a "drivetrain malfunction" and check engine light. During this time my vehicle also stopped working while I was driving it. Both of these incidents happened very quickly, and I am extremely lucky that no one was injured in either situation. This issue is extremely unsafe and clearly has not been fixed by the required recalls so far. I urge you to look into this further.

42 Power Train problem of the 2014 BMW 328

Failure Date: 03/09/2022

2014 BMW 328i xdrive, 62k miles. Routine oil change and filter change serviced at BMW dealership Feb 2022. March 2022 (<30 days later), suffered catastrophic engine failure related to camshaft oil starvation and sudden loss of power while driving on highway at 60 mph. Dealership investigation unable to determine the cause, ruled out n20 timing chain and oil pump chain issues. Neither BMW na nor dealership would stand behind engine failure - BMW na stated the "car is too old. " full engine replacement completed at the expense of the customer ($11k). Very disappointing that an engine would suffer catastrophic failure related to oil starvation within one month of dealership oil service with multi-point inspection. BMW f30 n20 engines have numerous reports of failures.

43 Power Train problem of the 2008 BMW 328

Failure Date: 02/25/2022

The driveshaft connection to the differntial has unusual movement that causes a clunking noise when changing low gears. This means the internal differential parts are subject to fail in the long term and can cause injuries to the driver if not fixed and vehicle gets out of control.

44 Power Train problem of the 2016 BMW 328

Failure Date: 02/07/2022

Car stops while driving, battery also draws while not in use. Which is very dangerous. Already filed report with dealer ship for car. We will be having an another baby this winter and it is getting to the point where it can be very dangerous for my family. We got it checked but since it’s a manufacturer issue is what they said. Since this car doesn’t have any recalls dealer doesn’t want to do anything. We noticed that many other cars of same year have the same problem.

45 Power Train problem of the 2015 BMW 328

Failure Date: 01/13/2022

Vehicle smells like gas. Drivetrain malfunction light comes on, car sputters and shakes, goes off after a couple of days and then comes back on and shakes 4 months or more later. Loses power or won’t accelerate while traveling more than 50 mph.

46 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 09/17/2021

While driving car at speeds <30 mph, on hitting a minor bump on the road, car engine suddenly stopped with a "drivetrain malfunction" error. The car lost all power within a few seconds, including power steering. The instrument cluster was off except for error message. Transmission shifted to neutral automatically which I believe is by design. On somehow maneuvering in traffic and coasting to a stop, and waiting a minute and pressing the ignition start button, car powered on immediately and was driveable. The same incident repeated within 30 miles of driving. A local authorized service center found no existing problems although there are several error messages logged by the on board computer. The safety is severely compromised and the car can be easily rear-ended since hazard light signals also failed. The vehicle has otherwise been regularly maintained at authorized service centers.

47 Power Train problem of the 2015 BMW 328

Failure Date: 08/03/2021

At random the car will display “drivetrain malfunction” which causes the car to shift into neutral and begins to slow down until it doesn’t move anymore. There is no check engine light or any other indicator of what might be the problem. The message just pops out of no where. It’s happen in the freeway making me scare to cause an accident because it so random. I’ve had to quickly turn my hazards and beginning switching lanes to avoid any accidents.

48 Power Train problem of the 2013 BMW 328

Failure Date: 07/19/2021

Car stalled while driving on highway due to drivetrain error code. Once stopped, oil pressure loss light came up. No warning lights prior to issue presenting itself at highway speeds. Initial technician belief is timing belt guide failure per other similar reports.

51 Power Train problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 02/15/2021

My vehicle is experiencing the same symptoms and is reporting the same trouble codes related to recall number: 17v683000. However, my vehicle is not included in this recall. I would appreciate it if this matter could be investigated and my vehicles VIN included in this recall.

52 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 11/04/2020

Failing timing chain. Manufacturing defect but not covered by BMW because "the VIN doesn't show as covered in our system". Some other vehicles had extended warranty for this issue until 70,000 miles but for some reason not all VIN's are covered. Please see other issues with the n20 engine across the 3 series, 5 series and x3 and you will see many people reporting the same issue. This needs a recall. Not fair to have this issue for so many customers.

53 Power Train problem of the 2013 BMW 328

Failure Date: 09/27/2020

Was driving on the highway in columbus, ohio when an error appeared on my screen for powertrain malfunction, please continue to drive moderately. Smoke came from my exhaust when going over 50 mph so I pulled over. Turned the car off and back on. Error message went away. Drove 20 mph home on side road. No smoke appeared. Started my car this morning and over huge smoke clouds (not evaporating) appeared. Called kelly BMW to make an appointment.

54 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 09/23/2020

Timing chain problems, the car stop in the middle of the road.

55 Power Train problem of the 2016 BMW 328

Failure Date: 08/31/2020

This happened two separate times about 2 weeks apart. . The car was stopped at a stoplight. Foot on brake. Suddenly engine started revving and car leaped forward. Brake did not stop it. The second time, (August 31, 2020) the car reared-ended the car in front, possibly causing injury to that driver. Neither car was harmed.

56 Power Train problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 07/08/2020

The vehicle lost the ability to shift from p to r to n to d and vice versa due to a malfunction of the gear shifter mechanism while driving. This BMW model uses a mechanical cable to move the automatic transmission gear selector. The cable assembly is held in place by a metal clip (BMW securing plate, part number 25161421252) so the gear knob can push or pull the cable from p to r to n to d and vice versa inside the cabin when the driver selects different gears. This clip can easily fall off as the cable assembly bends the metal clip over time. This issue could be fatal if the automatic transmission shifts gears suddenly from drive to neutral or reverse while driving at speed.

57 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/13/2020

While in motion on a county road, the service engine light came on and car started running very rough. Car was towed to the dealership. Whining noise coming from the timing chain. Worn crankshaft sprocket. Had to replace the timing chain and oil pump drive chain.

58 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/01/2020

I was cruising on the highway when my idrive displayed low oil pressure warning and drivetrain malfunction, the engine weird noises before it shutdown and went into neutral while I was still around traffic. I barely made it a safe place to stop as I had to coast up a hill and then turn with whatever momentum I had. The steering wheel and brakes were extremely hard to move. I got my car towed and had a diagnostic test for codes shown in the attached screenshot. Had a certified mechanic take a look and was told by several other mechanics as well that oil starvation destroyed the engine as a result of oil pump failure. No sign or premature wear with a very generous 5,000 mile oil & filter change interval and been in the hands of BMW dealerships for all it's life.

62 Power Train problem of the 2013 BMW 328

Failure Date: 09/16/2019

Worried about BMW timing chain in the n20 engine. I've heard so many story of engines getting blown and needing to be replaced. My son drives to school and I'm worried he's gonna get stranded. He's only 16 I want him to be in a safe vehicle. BMW needs to do a recall on this issue many people are having blown engines with the car not even being close to being paid off.

63 Power Train problem of the 2015 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/06/2019

I then booked an appointment at BMW encinitas on Monday, 6/3 to get it fixed. They diagnosed the check engine light and quoted me that it was all part of the recall and that there would be no charge. I signed the paperwork, and my service advisor joey said that due to the service department's backlog, the car wouldn't be ready until Tuesday 6/4 in the evening. They didn't give me a loaner vehicle, so I had to call my mom to pick me up. Later that afternoon, I got a call from my service advisor saying that the car wouldn't be ready until Friday, 6/7. On Wednesday 6/5, I received a message from my service advisor saying that my egr cooler was faulty and was replaced free of charge, but that the part that tripped the light, the egr valve, wasn't covered under the recall and that we would be charged $416. 00 + tax to get it fixed. This was after they had quoted me no charge to have it all fixed. Even if the part in question is not part of the recall, if BMW would have had egr coolers in stock and taken my car in sooner, the egr valve probably wouldn't have broken. We agreed to pay the charge to get my car out of the dealership, but this is ridiculous. My whole experience with the recall has been nothing but a disaster. This is by far the worst recall I've ever been a part of. On Thursday, 6/6, I received a call that my car was ready. I went to the dealership to pick it up, and they charged $448. 50 for the faulty valve, which was caused by the faulty cooler.

64 Power Train problem of the 2009 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/04/2019

We pulled into a parking space, my husband had his foot on the brake and the car surged up a curb, hit a sign and then hit a lamp post and the car went up the cement block. I don't remember much more, but ther insurance totaled the car and I suffered from brain trauma and 3 back disks.

65 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 05/14/2019

Driving at normal highway speeds approx. 55 mph, when low oil pressure warning came on and drive-train malfunction lights flashed on screen. Car stalled out and was almost unable to get to side of road. Car was towed to BMW dealer, cause of engine failure was due to the timing chain and guide. Will require new engine (out of warranty - BMW will not provide assistance). After additional research it has led to my conclusion that this is a common problem and a class action law suite has been submitted in regards to early model n20 motors. Premature engine failure due to timing chain defect. Car was well maintained with regularly serviced oil changes, etc. I have all parts receipts for all service done.

66 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 04/26/2019

I was driving on a busy highway and the vehicle randomly stalled and lost power. Drivetrain malfunction trouble lights lit up the dash. I was barely able to get out of traffic before coasting to a stop. I had the vehicle towed to BMW south austin and it was diagnosed with a faulty fuel transfer pump, and a faulty fuel tank. Essentially I had run out of fuel with 1/4 tank showing on the gauges. BMW denied my request to repair the vehicle under warranty, even though there is an extended warranty on the "in tank fuel pump". I guess people need to die in traffic when they run out of fuel unsuspectingly for BMW to care or issue a recall.

67 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW 328

Failure Date: 04/20/2019

Was driving on the highway when the computer advised to pull over in a safe place. I did and ended towing the car to the dealer for a diagnostic. Was told that the engine had to be replaced because the housing around the timing chain broke free obstructing the oil flow. The compression was good but they recommended that I replaced the engine at a 23344. 20 plus taxes. Needless to say I towed the car home without repair. This is a manufactured defect because regular maintenance could not prevent this engine defect.

68 Power Train problem of the 2008 BMW 328

Failure Date: 04/18/2019

4/19/2019 driving at varying speeds in traffic, probably between 35-45mph on hwy 280 northbound in the fastest of 4 lanes 5pm with my passenger during rush hour the vehicle stalled and the power steering and engine power stopped. Trying to restart, the engine made noise but no power returned. Fortunately, traffic had slowed and we were on a down hill slope and I managed to hit the warning flasher button-and moved thru 3 lanes of traffic to stop on the shoulder. The wonderful highway patrolman was behind me in minutes and pushed the vehicle to a hwy rest stop. The vehicle had things flash up and the windows and locks worked but there was no return of power. I had no prior problems. Fortunately nobody was hurt in 4 packed lines of hwy 280 traffic. Car was towed to BMW auto service shop.

69 Power Train problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2011 BMW 328i. While driving various speeds, the vehicle would not immediately accelerate and sputtered when depressing the accelerator pedal. On several occasions, smoke was present inside the cabin. The vehicle was taken to classic BMW (2571 som center rd, willoughby hills, OH), but the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 80,000.

70 Power Train problem of the 2013 BMW 328

Failure Date: 02/26/2019

The car had recently had its 8 speed automatic transmission fluid changed. The transmission was not refilled to the correct capacity and was low. The car began exhibiting drivetrain errors and went into limp mode. The problem is that the computer automatically shifted the car into park while I was driving it. As I approached a stoplight and slow down to around 6 miles an hour the computer automatically put the car in park causing significant grinding of the shark locking gear. There is a bug in the control software did not recognize the car was rolling at a relatively high speed when it decided to put the car in park. The computer should not put the car in park if the car is fully underway.
