The system includes a standard in-tank fuel pump to deliver fuel to the engine and a high-pressure fuel pump driven by the oil pump chain drive assembly, which can achieve a maximum programmed fuel pressure of 200 bar. Odi has received three owner complaints of stalling incidents in the subject vehicles due to failure of the high-pressure fuel pump. Additionally, odi has received eight complaints alleging incidents of vehicles unexpectedly going into a limp mode because of high-pressure fuel pump failures. A preliminary investigation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.
BMW 335 coupe hpfp (high pressure fuel pump for direct injection) failed before 4,000 miles. No signs of failure, car started to run rough, went into "limp" mode, and then would not restart without dying again after a few moments. Car was towed to the dealer, and was diagnosed as fuel pump failure. I had to wait 7+ weeks with the car in service because the fuel pump was on International backorder with 400+ units on backorder! pump was replaced after being in the shop for 7+ weeks, and car is running good again.
