High pressure fuel pump failing.

2 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2011

The contact owns a 2007 BMW 335i. The contact stated that when starting the vehicle, the check engine warning light would illuminate on the instrument panel and the vehicle would attempt to shut off. The dealer diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer advised that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The failure and current mileage was 56,000.

3 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2011

High pressure fuel pump failing resulting in my vehicle to shut off and not start. I'm very afraid this could happen while passing a vehicle on the highway or while on a vacation trip with family.

4 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2010

Reduced power indicator illuminated on dash. Shut off and restarted engine. Check engine light then illuminated. At time of event, owner was 160 miles from residence. Vehicle continued to operate normally albeit with significantly limited power. Vehicle was taken to dealer the next morning and problem diagnosed as defective high pressure fuel pump. Part was replaced under warranty. Dealer said when fuel pump failed previously (on March 11, 2010) the replacement part was the predecessor part number.

5 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2010

"engine failure" sign comes on my 2007 BMW 335xi and the engine power significantly cuts off. This has happened to me at least 3 times. The 1st and 2nd time it happened to me, I was driving on the freeway and suddenly, the sign comes on and I lost significant engine power, had to slow down and move over to the right lanes, as I had to drop my speed immediately from 70mph to 55 or lower. Then I pulled over, turned off the car and restarted the car. Sometimes that worked and my engine got full power, sometimes it doesn't and I have to drive with low engine power. The last time this happened to me, 3 days ago, I was in my subdivision and the same light came on, and I lost power. Luckily, it was only my sub, so I stopped the car and re-started the engine. For all the times this happened, I contacted BMW and I believe the did and drive update and replaced the high pressure fuel pump.

6 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2010

High pressure fuel pump failure in 2007 BMW 335i convertible @ 36k miles. Car was purchased in April, 2010 with 32k miles.

7 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

2007 BMW 335i sedan purchased used from dealer with 51,000 miles. About one month later, fuel system failed on interstate causing vehicle to loose power in rush hour traffic with high risk of accident and injury. Car towed to dealer for analysis and replacement of fuel pump, kept for more than a week. One month later, the same problem occurred again. Dealer would not cover cost of repair but said the car was drivable. Drove car very minimal over last two months, now car will not accelerate to more than 50 mph and shudders dramatically. Researched recalls and complaints revealed a long history of consumer complaints describing my exact circumstances. Proceeding with very costly repair but apprehensive about result, safety and dependability of vehicle. Manufacturer should recall and replace fuel system in order avoid potentially fatal circumstances.

8 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2010

My vehicle is 2007 model BMW 335i coupe. I was on the freeway 405 going approximately 70 miles per hour. Then suddenly an engine warning light "engine malfunction" sign comes up which lowers the rpm and the speed output of the engine to around 30~ 40. I have to quickly merge the vehicle from the inner lanes to the right going onto the curb since there was no curb on the inner lanes. After approximately 3 minutes as I slowly guided my vehicle to the side, the engine shuts off on its own with stuttering sound and engine cranking. I restarted the engine several times to no avail. I was extremely dangerous as the sudden slow down and engine shut off might happen when I am in the middle of the freeway and the cars behind or next to me might easily hit me with typical freeway speed of 70 mph. I called the two truck and had the vehicle towed to a BMW center. They inspected the vehicle and believed that the high pressure fuel pump is bad and will replace the fuel pump for me. It appears to be that this very same issue appeared quite often to a number of 335i or other BMW models using the same engine, in particular to the 07 and 08 models. More over, a lot of the car owners have the same issue happened to them even after their fuel pump replaced once or even twice. It seems like there is no absolute fix for such issue and it poses as a tremendous danger for BMW drivers with this specific engine since you cannot be certain when he problem will re-occur. Similar complains have been filed and the action can be referred here NHTSA action number: pe08032.

9 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

Long cranks to start up engine and misfires upon cold start up almost every day. Often gets cel but dealer denies warranty/recall work on high pressure fuel pump (hpfp hereon) because I didn't have exact code they are seeking for. They confirmed the symptom but "unless car breaks down on the road or get the exact code, they will not replace failed part". Basically saying they will not voluntarily resolve problem unless they are forced to. Hpfp failure on BMW n54 engine platform is already well known fact hence BMW put extended warranty on hpfp. But it's not a recall and many times dealer denies to replace although they confirm the symptom and possible danger associated with the failed parts on vehicles. All they did was updating the dme program that supposedly fix the problem but long crank still happens everyday.

10 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2010

The car started normally but within a mile it began to shudder above ~2. 5k rpm. I got to my destination without further incidence. Later that day soon after leaving the parking lot the car died at a stop sign. Ses and other lights came on. I started it up and it immediately died again. This happened repeatedly until I found that if I gave it the right amount of gas and kept it under a certain rpm I could operate with very limited power. That combined with the fact it was largely downhill and not very far to my house allowed me to get home safely. I drove it to the dealership the next day (keeping it well under 2. 5k rpm to do so) and they replaced the high pressure fuel pump.

11 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2010

Hi, I purchased a 2007 certified pre owned BMW 335i from weatherford BMW in berkeley, CA just one week ago. Since the purchase, I have had an engine malfunction, loss of power light come up over 10 times. It always comes up when I accelerate on the highway. It leads to a drastic reduction in power, vibration of the car, and causes me to go significantly below the speed limit. I am afraid the car is going to stall on me and that suddenly dropping the speed will result in an accident. It is particularly ridiculous that this was labeled a "certified" car when it started having problems the very next day. I took it to a dealership to get it repaired and they claim the high-pressure fuel pump needs to be replaced. Prior to taking it in, I noticed turning the car off and then on seemed to "reset" it and make the light go away. Still no peace of mind while driving on the highway. I am awaiting repair of the vehicle to see if the issue has been fixed, but reading other complaints on the internet has left me pessimistic that anything is going to be done about this.

12 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

Owner of a 2007 BMW 335i coupe. Noticed a problem with rough idles and long cranks at start-up. As time went by, the long cranks and rough idles became more frequent. While driving onto the freeway via freeway on ramp, fuel pump failed while I was merging and engine was cut to half power "limp-mode. " car had significant loss of power and I was almost rear-ended by a semi that was driving in the slow lane.

13 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

The BMW 335i has problem with the high pressure fuel pump failures which was acknowledged by BMW n/a with a extended warranty on this part for 10 years or 120k miles. My BMW 335i has had 3 fuel pump failures in 24,000 miles, each time the car has completely stalled leaving me stranded in very dangerous scenarios. The most recent time I was stranded on a busy road with no shoulder which my safety was jeopardized by this cars default. Numerous attempts to contact BMW n/a have been made, to no avail.

14 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

Driving home my 2007 BMW 335 all of sudden lost horse power. Error message stated "engine malfunction-reduced power". This occurred on an entry to an expressway while trying to accelerate. It obvious the dangers that could happen when the vehicle loses power. I was fortunate enough to pull over and limp to next exit. The dealer ship stated the problem was high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) the is the 2nd time the hpfp has been replaced on my vehicle. My vehicle only has 38k miles. I did further research and this appears to be a common problem. BMW needs to address this before anyone gets injured as a result of this issue.

15 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2010

2007 335i fuel pump is failing on the road. My message says "engine malfunction reduced power" on the road. This can be dangerous to other cars on the road.

16 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2010

High pressure fuel pump failure in 2007 BMW e90 (sedan) 335i. Drivability issues due to very rough engine idle and trouble getting car restarted.

17 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2010

Was driving at approximately 55 mph when my car started to shutter. My BMW started to slow despite me depressing the gas pedal. I had to pull off the side of the road even though there was not a good spot to stop. BMW attempted to fix it once by updating the car's software. However, they ended up replacing the fuel pump. It took two service sessions to fix the problem.

18 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

Engine began running rough. Within 1 mile the reduced power indicator was illuminated on the dash. Shutoff and restarted engine - check engine light then illuminated. Vehicle was taken to local dealership and problem diagnosed as a defective high pressure fuel pump. Dealer replaced pump under warranty.

19 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

Had a high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) failure while driving which resulted in the car going into limp mode (reduced engine power) while driving. This limp mode is potentially a serious safety issue in that if you are on the highway, merging, passing, or around town driving and you get this limp mode you can be involved in an accident due to the vehicle not responding as you, or other drivers, would expect. Symptoms of this issue are long starting crank periods before the vehicle turns over. BMW has know this is a problem for a number of years yet have not spent the appropriate effort to correct the problem. I have had two hpfp failures in the past 11 months (may 2009 and Feb 2010).

20 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2010

The high pressure fuel pump in my BMW 335i. The consequences, while well documented, for me lack of acceleration and unable to go past 45mph. This occurred on a major freeway where the speed limit is 60mph across the lake washington bridge. The part replaced was the high pressure fuel pump by BMW. What lead up to the failure? simply accelerating to freeway speeds caused the onboard computer to notify me there was an engine malfunction. It then reduced my speed to approximately 45mph.

21 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2010

Purchased a used 2007 BMW 335i. Within 2 weeks car would shake and would lose power at higher rpm. Engine service light would come on, but not be present on restart. Dealer diagnosed as a faulty high pressure fuel pump. Dealer blamed it on fuel quality however I followed manufacture recommended octane ratings. Was also told that dealership has had massive problems with the fuel pump on this model turbo engine.

22 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2010

This is a second complaint of the same exact problem that I had previously in April 2008. The odi id number 10227507. On the evening of Jan. 2nd, 2010, the replacement fuel pump failed while I was driving the car as I was making an approach to the onramp onto the freeway. The car shuddered, rattled, and loss power and eventually died. I had to tow the car to a storage overnight and waited until Jan. 4th, a Monday, to tow the car again to a nearby BMW service center. They eventually replaced the fuel pump, which is a 3rd fuel pump, including the original that came with the car. It was very frustrating that I was stranded 140 miles away from home, and had no transportation for 48 hours until the problem had been resolved thereafter.

23 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2009

Noticed a long crank (about 5 seconds long) when I started my vehicle (2007 BMW 335i sedan) in the morning. The vehicle did start though. I was coming home from breakfast when the "engine malfunction" light came on and dramatically reduced power. At the time I was turning left at a signaled intersection. I was not able to accelerate through the turn and could have been struck by drivers turning left behind me. After a second or two, the car was able to accelerate, but in a reduced power state. Later, it was determined the high pressure fuel pump failed. This was the second high pressure fuel pump replacement on this vehicle within a 6 month or about a 8000 mile span. If I was on the freeway or other high speed road, and this reduced power state appeared due to the fuel pump - I would pose a serious hazard to others on the road, and put my safety in jeopardy.

24 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2009

2007 BMW 335i hpfp failed on the highway car stalled and came to a stop as I rolled off the shoulder. A second high pressure fuel pump is indicating that its going to fail and I am seriously concerned about driving it. The car only has 16,000miles and dealer refuse to swap the pump until there is actually failure even though I have exhibited all the signs that the pump is about to fail again. They only provided me a software update. I am seriously concerned for my safety and as a result am not driving this car long distances or on the highway. . I think its about time authorities step up and force BMW to deal with this very serious vehicle hazard, which they are abundantly aware of, but refuse to do nothing about.

25 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2009

High pressure fuel pump failed on my car twice 1st instance - 3000 miles on car - 2 months old - octoberish of 07 - symptoms were long cranking - taking 5-10 seconds to start - occasionally 20-30 seconds. (complaint was never filed - dealer replaced under warranty) 2nd instance - just a few weeks ago - no warning - driving away from my house, pulling into a busy street, suddenly almost no power, and almost stalled, and would have if I didn't get the clutch in and foot on the gas as quick as I did. Car went into limp mode and was barely drivable. Had to abuse the clutch just to get it to move without stalling, felt like it had maybe 50 horsepower if I was lucky. No exaggeration. - would occasionally stall at idle at this point. Barely limped a few blocks home. (this fuel pump was the 2nd in the car, had about 25,000 miles on it and about 1. 5 years).

26 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2009

Car loses power and shakes. Check engine light comes on. Car dies and must be towed. This is the second time this has happened. The first time 6 months ago the fuel pump was replaced.

27 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2008

My previous car was a 2007 BMW 335i coupe. After a couple of months of owning the car, the car was diagnosed with a faulty fuel pump. Subsequently, I purchased a 2008 335i convertible. After driving the car for a couple of thousand miles, the car started showing signs of a faulty fuel pump (long crank times). Yesterday, the engine malfunction light came on and the issue was determined to be that of the faulty fuel pump. At this point, the car went into limp mode with reduced power. Additionally, there was shaking and the car was misfiring and running very rough. This is clearly a huge defect with the 335i engines. It is a safety hazard should the fuel pump break while the car is on a highway, or in a deserted location with no access to a repair shop. I would appreciate if this issue is given the seriousness that it deserves.

28 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2008

Fuel pump failed a second time. My original complaint # is 10227599. Exact same symptoms.

29 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

Car started perfectly for first 10000 mi. Starts were short and smooth. Car undriven for 7days before incident. Driving on freeway after an unusual long hard start. Lost engine power all of a sudden. Car system says: engine malfunction engine power reduced. The same thing happened on the next few starts-reduced power after a short time driving. It then failed on every start until I had my appointment (18 days) us model 2007 335xi build date may 2007 took it to BMW gallery in calgary. It is the high pressure fuel pump and it is on indefinite backorder from germany. They cannot fix it until BMW releases a new version. There is no eta for this part. They tell me it is ok to drive. I feel it is unsafe. From my investigation, this is a common problem that merits a complaint.

30 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2008

2008 BMW 335i. Jan build picked up at the BMW welt in Feb of 08. @9,500 miles. High pressure fuel pump failure. Car experienced a sudden loss of power while I was driving on a secondary road. Thankfully I was about to make a turn and the car behind me was a reasonable distance away. Also service engine soon light has come on. Car has a very rough idle and is barely drivable on public roads.

31 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

My 8 month old BMW 335 fails on me while driving in the freeway with my 7 year old son at 1130pm. Engine malfunction. Towed it to the dealer -it was the fuel pump. They apparently replaced it . . The next day I got it back late afternoon. Driving it back home after 60 miles. It did it again. Apparently im not the only one who' s having problem. . This is a very serious . . It just stop in the middle of the road with a vehicle that's only 8 month old. . . . Hope you will address this.

32 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

2008 BMW 335i (e93) high pressure fuel pump failure resulting in long starts and sometimes reduced power or engine stalling while driving. BMW replace hpfp (high pressure fuel pump) with rebuilt unit at 2,200 miles.

33 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2008

I drive a BMW 335i and the fuel pump failed. Indications were long crank times, engine stalling while driving, and shuttering while driving. I know of many other BMW's with the twin turbo engine that have/had this problem. BMW needs to completely redesign the fuel pump so serious incidents do not occur while driving.

34 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2008

Initially, car was slow to start after pressing start button. Immediately experienced noticeable decrease in power. Car was not responsive at all whenever I attempted to accelerate. Exhaust note began to sound like there was a hole in the muffler. After 1 or 2 days, a yellow service engine light appeared in dashboard display. Afterwards car felt like it would stall out unless I depressed pedal to keep rpms up. The car was towed to the dealership where I was told when I picked up the car that the problem was due to a computer program failure. On my way home after 10 minutes of driving I returned the car to the dealership and told the service advisor that my car was not fixed and that I was experiencing the same car substandard performance. After a couple of days I was called and told the problem was the high pressure fuel pump. The car is till at the dealership as the part has not arrived at the dealership yet.

35 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2008

High pressure fuel pump has been replaced twice on the vehicle.
