I am filing a safety complaint regarding a catastrophic timing chain failure on my 2014 BMW X3 xdrive28i equipped with the n20 engine. While driving, the timing chain and oil pump drive chain failed without warning. This is a well-documented defect on BMW n20/n26 engines that has been the subject of extended warranties and numerous consumer complaints. This failure can cause sudden engine seizure, immediate loss of power steering and braking assist, and creates a serious risk of crash while the vehicle is in motion. BMW issued an extended limited parts warranty for this exact defect (timing chain and oil pump drive chain), acknowledging a manufacturing defect. However, BMW is refusing to cover my repair even though this is a known safety issue affecting thousands of vehicles. The vehicle had been properly maintained, and there were no warning signs before the failure. I purchased the vehicle in October 2021, and this defect occurred during normal use commuting to work. The cost of repair is extremely high due to the internal engine damage caused by the timing chain defect. This is not normal wear and tear. This is a known design/manufacturing defect that BMW has been aware of for years. Also, when I purchased this vehicle, the headlights, and taillights on the hatchback were not working. I had brought this up to the dealership they replaced the headlights, but did not address the tail lights. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this defect further, and the tail lights as these failures create a significant safety hazard for drivers and other vehicles on the road.

This problem has occurred to me now twice. Both occurrences were on very cold days where the temperature was below 20 degrees f. The car starts promptly and runs, but the entire dashboard electronic instrument cluster is non-functioning and dark . In this condition, you cannot tell your speed, engine rpm, fuel level, engine temperature, or any mileage numbers. The turn signals also do not work. The headlights and the idrive screen and the climate control were all lit properly and functioned. I did not think to check the brake or tailights, unfortunately. Multiple restarts of the car had no effect, and so I drove home without the dash functions. After the car sat overnight in my garage (which is somewhat warmer) the dash lights returned to their proper function.

The headlights will turn on and off irregularly without any drastic changes in outside lighting conditions while set in the auto setting. No controls will be touched and the lights will turn on and off completely by themselves. It appears something is wrong with the lights switch assembly, as if something is shorting / wire is pinched. Other owners online forums have experienced similar issues as well. Can become a serious problem if it occurs while driving, especially in dark conditions.

When using the headlights there is a shadow across the top half of our windshield. The dealership was not able to fix, they acknowledged they could see what we are referring to. They are going to file a report with BMW. I do not know what to do in the meantime. This is our main transportation. This definitely needs a safety recall.

The passenger side daylight running light stopped functioning. I called BMW dealership while it was still under warranty and was told that if it was simply a light needing replacement it would be $500. At the next oil change I had a diagnostic test done and was told that the modules for both daylight running lights had overheated and melted and that a headlight also would need replacement. The cost of this was quoted at $4,200. This is a huge safety concern as this could easily cause an electrical fire. BMW was contacted and refused to cover the cost as it was 2000 miles out of warranty when the oil was changed.
Headlights flash due to possible faulty switch. Very bad safely problem that affects other cars.

Headlights cycle on and off. Does this frequently. Checked on BMW site bimmerpost and other people have had the same problem. Google 2019 BMW X3 headlights tuning off and on after shut down.
Vehicle began intermittently turning lights on and off while parked and driving. Upon dealer inspection, sunroof frame failed causing water to leak and corrode the vdp module which controls items like the headlights and suspension. Dealer did confirm, vehicle is being repaired at this moment. There were no warning lights about the headlight malfunction, noticed it while driving and while parked. There was a warning light regarding the suspension however it turned off next start and only came back on once more, again disappearing next start. Upon completion of repair, can provide parts inspection, receipts and video of the lighting issue while parked.

The contact owns a 2015 BMW X3. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 24v608000 (engine and engine cooling, electrical system); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. Additionally, the contact stated that the high-beam headlights failed to operate as needed; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed by the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 18,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The high beams on the car malfunctioned. The sheathing material on the wires is supposedly “soy based” and breaks down with heat and time. When the wire insulation breaks down beyond a certain point, it will crumble off of the wires, leading to exposed wires, which may touch each other, and cause certain functions of the headlamp to fail. If the headlamp fails while driving at night, vision may be impaired, or completely impossible. The issue likely affects almost every BMW produced from ~2007, to at least 2014. The vehicle was never taken into a shop, or dealership for the issue, as it was repaired by the owner, instead of being replaced. The vehicle was never inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. The “lamp faulty” malfunction message would appear on the dash when the adaptive function was activated, the high beams also did not work, but there was no error code present for this issue without the use of a code scanner. One of the codes present when using a code scanner implied that there was a short circuit inside of the headlamp, causing certain functions to cease operation.
Headlights flash on and off for no apparent reason which is distracting to other drivers both in front of me or approaching my vehicle. This has happened dozens of times now most recently 4/19/24 but I first noticed it more than a year ago. Headlights also go on and off and start to self level multiple times after car has been turned off. This has happend on a number of occasions as well. Normally the rotary light switch is always set in the auto position in my car .
I have records of over 900 other consumers including myself that have been asking BMW to fix a potential deadly lighting malfunction that leaves you with no dash lighting or a whiteout. This problem effects all the dash and hvac controls where you can't see any the dash and safety components. I've reached out to BMW and they refuse to acknowledge the problem and have asked me to stop.
This issue affects nearly all modern vehicles that support only dark mode for backlit/light-imitting dashboard/infotainment screens. Back-lit, white text on a black background is very difficult to read for some people with certain medical conditions. For example, my wife has an intraocular lens implant. She can read road signs and physical 'white on black' text fine, but the led backlit screen white text on a black screen causes the white lettering to glare and be blurry, making it difficult to read. I see this as a safety issue as she has to spend more time trying to read the dashboard and ac/radio controls. Simple fix - require all auto manufacturers to include both a dark mode and a light mode for electronic displays. Currently the only ones I'm aware of who have a light mode display are Tesla and Hyundai.
The 2023 BMW X3 is equipped with automatic high beams that includes an anti-dazzle feature. The anti-dazzle/non-glare (matrix) feature have been available on non us spec vehicles since 2013 but us legislation did not allow this feature to enabled in the united states. In the meantime legislation has changed however my BMW has been decoded by the manufacturer so that my car does not have that feature and they cite legislation as the issue. My car is capable of the feature but BMW is refusing to enable it thus reducing night time visibility and safety for myself and others on the road. I’m also reading there are people and shops who will enable the feature but with only an 80% solution which means there’s a potential to have a lot of cars on the road that are not correctly providing anti-glare to other vehicles. I think BMW should stop decoding (removing) this feature and recall all cars that have been decoded to have the feature re-enabled. This is 100% a safety issue.

The headlights will flicker on and off randomly. They will also go from low beams to high beams randomly. This is with the headlights switch set to automatic. I've never tried any other settings.
On many cars including mine, and a family members 2021 8 series, BMW uses a light sensor on the instrument cluster to set the daytime dimming of the digital cluster and backup cameras. However, florida-legal window tint confuses the system, and causes the screens to dim in a way that cannot be overridden or adjusted. There is a setting for screen brightness, however it is only active for night. This has caused difficulties reading the instrument display repeatedly. This is includes: collision warnings, back up camera, vehicle speed, and safety warnings. Here is a video showing the effect on someone else's car. Mine is worse, and driver said that that is gets worse depending on circumstances. Https://streamable. Com/n4tjp4.
Front headlights were replaced under warranty after daytime running lights both stopped working in oct. 2021. Similar problem now on 9/4/25 approximately 4 years later, and BMW is leaving me to foot the bill on a barely 7 year old vehicle, forcing me to have 3 sets of lights on a car that is 7 years old.
I was at a stop light and when the light changed I stepped on the gas. The car suddenly turned completely off. I had no steering, no braking no ability to turn the hazard lights on. I was in the middle of the street with traffic behind me and my child was in the back seat with me. The car completely died. There were no warning signs at all cars started to go around me and I exited the car with my child to avoid getting hit because I could not put my hazard lights. I called my husband and after about 10 minutes I could see the headlights were on. My husband gave me his care and he took my car home but he said the car was acting weird and kept shutting off while on the way back home. Then it shut off completely again in our driveway and we cannot close the doors. We are waiting for BMW to pick up the car tomorrow.
Brightness adjustment for control display screen (backup camera, navigation, messages etc) has been eliminated from menu. Driver has no way to adjust daytime brightness anymore. BMW replaced it with a interior brightness sensor in the upper left corner of the instrument cluster above the gas gauge. The danger incurs because the screen keeps changing brightness in the daytime based upon light entering the auto and hitting the light sensor. This happens coming out of a garage, tree lined street, cloudy day etc. The danger is that you cannot observe things clearly using the back-up camera, and using navigation during the daytime you cannot make out directions, roads, highways etc because the screen turns a dull white or almost gray at times. This forces you to star at the screen or get closer or ask your passenger to read the screen. The bright white letters and numbers goes dull and unreadable. Dealers and service managers have acknowledged that this is an issue but no solution. Forums in europe also acknowledge this problem that BMW is aware of with no intent on correcting. It was also a problem on my 2019 BMW 530 but I had the car coded to put the daytime adjustment back on the menu for driver adjustment. Complaints on the internet also for 2020 BMW x5 and no one has a resolution. I glued a small led to my dash that will fool the sensor and brighten my screen but it is not practical to leave this light on at all times. BMW north America acknowledges my issue also with no solution. Dealers have verified this with other new cars on their lots but also with no solution. Sometimes they blame tint to appease you but none of my cars or owner complaints had any tint on their windows or polarized glasses.
My car has suddenly lost power in several occasions nearly causing an accident at 60 mph on one occasion. When power is lost steering seizes up completely. This happens with absolutely no warning whatsoever & my car has started up as though nothing is wrong after. The second issue is so well known it has been labeled as the "terrible triad" ac road all BMW forums, youtube. Twitter, etc. You can find thousands of chats & forums discussing the 3 lights which appear simultaneously due to transfer case actuator & I drive issues. My 4x4 light is on indefinitely & all of the symptoms can be felt.

When driving the car during the day the infortainment digital display and dash board dims to almost black intermittently making it dangerous and distracting to operate the vehicle if trying to use the radio, the phone, or driving miles mph and milage gauges. The screens brighten up if the driver window is opened up. But, it is impossible to do this when driving at freeway speeds. The problem has been complained about within two months of driving it off the showroom floor in Dec 2019. I have been told 10 times so far, that there is no fix for this problem.
Without warning, the dashboard lights and indicators go dark. The vehicle can be stationary or in motion when it happens. I have contacted the dealer, fields BMW, twice. The first time the service department replaced the battery on my remote key control, the second time service told me it was a known problem at BMW and they were working on a software fix. My second contact was probably six weeks ago, but it happened again two days ago when my wife lost the dashboard lights in the evening. It is very startling (and unsafe) to lose the dashboard lights and indicators, especially at night. Neither BMW nor my dealer has informed me of any pending software fix.
The issue is becoming more systemic and occurs more often. Issue is as follows: 1) while driving, digital instrumentation will go completely blank for a period of time. This includes speedometer, tachometer, clock, cruise control information. Basically, anything that is on the screen disappears. 2) in addition to the instrumentation malfunction, the following system failures are intermittently occurring (no pattern detected yet): all wheel drive system failure (while driving) - when display does resume, vehicle warning system indicates the vehicle may be driven, but the all wheel drive system is inoperative. Park distance control (occurred while vehicle was stationary) - when display does resume, vehicle warning system indicates pdc system is inoperative. Auto start/stop feature (occurred while vehicle was stationary) - while at a stop and the failure occurred, the engine did shut down incorrect average mileage display - normal mpg for the vehicle is currently around 24. 2. Vehicle was reporting an average mpg of 9. 7 prior to one failure.
Rear taillights leds are used when light switch is set to park lights and the led are very prone to failure (search youtube for X3 led failure, many cases reported there) this can lead you to driving without any lights on rear of the car living you prone to a rear end collision. . . Of the 4 led boards on my car, two have already failed and fear the other two will go soon. . Read more...

I came outside one morning to find that all my windows were rolled down, the sunroof was rolled completely back, and the doors were unlocked. It had been raining heavily the night before and the interior of the car was completely soaked. The idrive system, radio, and seats were completely unresponsive. Almost every light on the dashboard was on - low tire pressure, abs, airbag light, parking brake malfunction, cel, oil light, and others. Upon further experimentation, I discovered that the car would open completely if I unwittingly held the unlock key for no more than 3 seconds. 3 seconds has cost me thousands of dollars in repairing connectors, the idrive system, replacing carpets, and more. On top of that, the vehicle has been in the shop for almost a month because of the time it takes to investigate these issues and order replacement parts.
When I attempt to accelerate in my 2007 BMW X3, it appears to skip. Also, when it is time for the gear to change, it does not change at the appropriate time.

The led twilights are defective. I've had this happen on 2 separate BMW X3's I have owned for a total of 4 taillights that are defective. This is a very common problem and is reported over and over again by other owners. It's almost certain that if you own a BMW X3 f25 (2011-2017) this will happen. It requires a diy repair to the circuit board or replacement of the entire taillight ($250-300 each. ). Https://m. Youtube. Com/watch?v=jdpbm6cp_yo.
During replacement of the xenon headlamp bulbs on the vehicle I noticed that all the vinyl wire covering material had become brittle and cracked off most of the copper wire in side both the headlamp assemblies. The now exposed bare wiring posses potential fire hazzards and also loss of lighting at night. I believe that the oem headlamp supplier supplied out of spec wire and should remedy this potentialy dangerous life safety situation.
On January 23, 2012 after a whole weekend of downpour rain, I get into my X3 to notice water on the center console (near my cup holder) I look up and notice the water is dripping from the top middle console (where the moon roof control, air bag button and sos call button are located). Not only was it dripping water but the whole area around but it was soaked and wet. After reading about this on-line that other people have and are experiencing this water leak problem, I realized I need to check the other areas people mention they had water leaks. That's when I checked the floor on both the driver and passenger side and to my surprise the driver side had more water than what I could ever imagine, it was drenched. So now that I have all this water in my car it looks like it has caused some problems with my sos button. Without me touching it, it tries to calls and doesn't get a connection. It reads BMW phone inactive and it keeps making a noise that comes through the speakers. I've also noticed that light from the middle top console is not working correctly. I am sure I'm going to end up with a lot more electrical, lighting problems than just these few. This is a problem that needs to be looked into and fix by BMW.
