Headlights Problems of BMW X3

BMW X3 owners have reported 9 problems related to headlights (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Headlights problem of the 2018 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/18/2018

As I was making a 10 minute drive, on a highway about 30 minutes before dark, it just started to snow. Suddenly all of the front sensors started to flash "trouble" on the dash. I checked the front of the car and ice had formed over the sensors and headlights. That rendered the car unsafe to drive in the dark since the headlights could not shine through the ice. As for the distance sensors, I guess that is a desigh flaw as a function of how snow passes over the sensors. I believe that the led headlights do not generate enough heat to prevent ice from forming on the lens of the headlights.

3 Headlights problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/29/2017

Internal headlight wiring is extremely flaking off its insulation, revealing bare wires throughout both headlights. Both sections of the light are affected, xenon and halogen. Discovered during routine bulb replacement. Merely touching the wires caused extra flaking. Seems to be a potential electrocution/fire hazard.

4 Headlights problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

Headlight went out, upon inspection by a local independent BMW specialist it was brought to my attention that the rubber insulation on all of the wiring inside my xenon hid is flaking off. I was told those a common issue on most mid 2000s Bmws. I was quoted 4000 for replacement of both headlights and they would eventually begin to flake again. With the recent onset of Bmws catching on fire I would think this is a possible recall issue.

5 Headlights problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/23/2017

Both headlight lenses are cracking and pitted on the inside of the lenses. Vehicle is under warranty and has been at the dealer on two separate occasions. The 2nd time at the dealer they had a regional tech manager check the headlights. The conclusion he came to is that the pitting and cracking is on the outside and therefore not a defect. Well, a child could see and tell, even by touching the face of the headlights that this is on the inside of the plastic headlamp assemblies. I believe this is a serious safety issue at night, as well as a clear materials defect. I believe that BMW does know that they are defective, and simply doesn't want to pay for the headlights. They said I could replace them myself if I wanted to at a cost of $5000. 00.

6 Headlights problem of the 2005 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/11/2016

The internal wiring of the hid headlights has deteriorated to the point of falling apart leaving bare conductors in multiple locations. This has caused the headlights, adaptive motor drives, and decorative lighting to be intermittent and fail. With the bare conductors, an appreciable fire hazard exists.

7 Headlights problem of the 2011 BMW X3

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

The electrical system on this vehicle no longer functions, ie, the windshield wipers don't work, the headlights operate sporadically, the power door locks and power windows do not operate, the a/c doesn't work, the horn honks periodically, the tailgate won't open to facilitate replacement of fuses. Windshield wipers are a crucial safety item in the pacific NW as are headlights. This incident occurred in bellingham, wa. BMW offered little assistance despite the safety issues and the fact that the car was under BMW's warranty.

8 Headlights problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/22/2005

The driver side low beam headlight is not accessible for changing by the owner. The dealer has told me that the entire headlight assembly must be removed to change the low beam light.

9 Headlights problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/20/2004

Blinded by high intensity headlamps. Almost lost control of vehicle. First, let me thank you for closing down the distribution of after-market hi devices made by amtex in dayton, TX. The after-market ones are particularly dangerous because they are placed in headlights not designed for the hi intensity lamps. These headlamps are a continuing problem, especially the blue-white lamps. Some are so intense as to cause pain - like looking into a welder's electric arc. These lamps may be ok on the autobahn, but they have no place in urban crowded freeways. Not only are the direct beams distracting and dangerous, but even reflected (from other vehicles and wet roadways) light causes problems. This is a very serious problem, and one that is admitedly hard to quantify - who can say how many accidents have been caused by drivers blinded by these lights. Notable offenders are BMW-late models, Honda - especially accord & Acura, Lexus, and Audi. Many of the high-end, expensive foreign-made vehicles tend to have these obnoxious lamps as standard equipment. Enough is enough! it's time to get these dangerous irritants off the road!.
