Engine seized at 65mph highway speeds during commute to work on busy boston highway. Narrowly avoided several collisions as vehicle coasted to stop. Vehicle was purchased new from a BMW dealer three weeks ago and has less than 2,000 miles on it. Dealer advises an "oversized bearing was found in the engine causing it to overheat and seize". Engine requires replacement. Transmission, transfer case, electronics and cooling system damage are suspected by the dealer tech and will require monitoring.

Shifting is erratic, especially accelerating from a stop. Both wife and myself noticed this on separate occasions driving by ourselves. Dealer says there are no codes and it drives like all other X3's. It does not drive like other X3's as we were given a new X3 as a loaner.

The contact owns a 2013 BMW X3. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact maneuvered to the side of the road. The contact also stated that the chassis stabilization, drive train malfunction, and check engine warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the accelerator pedal module failed and had to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 31,475.

The contact stated that the failure was similar to slamming down on the brake pedal however, the brake lights did not illumunate during the failure. The contact stated that the vehilcle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed but the failure could not be duplicated. The failure was recurring but only during rainy weather. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 49000. Am.
Pulling into a parking spot with my foot on the brake to park, the car kept lunging forward with a reving sound, not constant but pulse sating until the vehicle hit a concrete wall. The airbag never went off. I went online later to find that there were several complaints about this problem. I contacted BMW and a rep. Stated that there have been" multiple complaints about this problem, but it has never been BMW fault. " she sent a BMW engineer out to inspect the vehicle he finally inspected it 3 weeks later. Three weeks later I have not heard from him about the results. There is over $9,000. 00 in damages.

I was arriving at my daughter's home in decatur GA just before 9:00 a. M. On Friday, may 22, 2015. I pulled into her driveway but could see here was no room to park there due to the construction debris next door (from the new house being built). I decided to back out of her driveway and park on the street. I put the BMW X3 in reverse and it slowly (as usual) began moving backwards. With no foot on gas pedal, my car came to a stop at a slight incline. I reached my right foot over and tapped the tip top of my gas pedal, hoping just a small tap of gas could get me over the incline. Just as I did this, the pedal dropped to the floor and the car revved, then lunged backwards. I was holding the brakes as tight as I could and within a few second brought my left leg to help push on brake with both feet. The brake could not stop the full force of the car moving backwards at full throttle, and left black skid marks in her driveway. My car speed in reverse at full throttle across the street narrowly missing a dumpster parked next door and another vehicle driving up the street who witnessed the incident. My car proceeded into the neighbor's yard (directly across the street), crashed into the neighbor's car, pushing their car into the front porch of their house. Both cars were totaled and the house sustained damage. This incident must be investigated. Please contact me for more info and to get access to my car for inspection. People could have been killed!!!.

On April 5th, 2015 at 10:00am. I drove my car to church (20 min dirve / 10 miles @ 35-60mph speed) without any problems or indication of issues. At 11:15am I was in route to go home traveling about 35mph. When I reached a stop light. . . My cars eco-technology kicked in, and it turned off. Nothing out of the ordinary on any other day except that day. The engine light came on, the abd light came on, and alerts indicating my transmission was malfunctioning and my brakes weren't working. When the light turned green, my vehicle did not turn on. It shut off and would not restart. After 5 minutes of being idle in the middle of ongoing traffic and me panic-kingly pressing buttons on my key and on the dash. . . My car out of no where. . . Turned back on. But my car was like in a "safe mode", I could not accelarate more than 15-20 mph and I'm not sure because the tachometer wasn't working or my indicators. The lights indicating that my transmission, brakes and engine were all still on and the alerts kept showing up on my navigation screen. I tried calling global assist, but the call would not go thru given my electrical issues. I tried sending a service request but that was also useless. . . And all of the service centers were closed on Sunday. I drove home parked my X3 and called the service center first thing Monday April 6th. (7:30am). They told me to drive it in, and once again dealt with the car not wanting to start. . . Pushing buttons randomly on the remote until it decided it was ready to start. I drove it in this "safe mode" for approx 10 miles. And we are going on 4 weeks. . . And the dealer has been unable to repair my car and has not given me any resolution. My car has less than 35k miles and is a 2013. It seems like I shouldn't be dealing with this kind of issue so early on. I just want a new car at this point.
There were a total of 4 incidences. 2/21/15 took BMW X3 xdrive28i to dealer with 112 miles on car, after car engine revved higher as I was coming down a hill to a complete stop. I had to practically stand on the break for car to stop. Acceleration lasted about 4 seconds after stopping. Had to keep my foot on break during that time. It happened a second time on the way to dealer; going up a slight hill, while coming to a complete stop. Prior to the above date, on 2/16/15, car also accelerated by itself while driving about 55 mph on the highway. I had to step on break to slow down. Later that day the car accelerated by itself while rolling in a parking lot. I had to break hard to stop it. On 2/21/15 the dealer requested BMW na to send their engineers to check out the car. 2/24/15 BMW na advised me that "the car only does what you tell it to do with one of the controls. The engineers will be going to the dealership to check if anything is wrong with" my 2015 X3 xdrive. I advised them "they were looking for the wrong thing since there is something wrong with a car that accelerates when you are stepping on the break. " they "should be looking for what is wrong with my X3. " 3/4/15 BMW na advised that engineers had looked at the car at the dealership and it will take 7 to 10 business days for their decision. 3/10/15 BMW na advise me that the engineers checked out my X3 and the car is "performing as designed". I asked "is the X3 designed to accelerate when you are trying to stop the car?" the dealer also says there is nothing wrong with the car. When I told dealer "if it starts acting up again I will bring it right back" dealer said "that's up to BMW". Since my BMW X3 sometimes accelerates when you are trying to stop and while at road speed, something is wrong with the car. Everything has to go through the computer. Might it be the computer program design?.
Tl-the contact owns a 2015 BMW X3. The contact stated that when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle independently accelerated causing the contact to crash into another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The police report was not filed and no injuries sustained. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 4500. Ne.
In a single sitting vehicle in park, egine revved to 2500 then to 3500 and then to redline (approx 7500rpm). I shut down the engine and waited 5 minutes. Started engine and shifted to reverse. Engine revved to 2500 and I immediately shut down engine. Waited 10 minutes and tried again. After a period of idling proceeded to shift into drive and all was normal.

In stop and go traffic on the interstate I was braking after moving forward a few feet and the engine started racing causing the car to lurch forward (given I was on the brake) until the brake would not hold any longer at which point the car accelerated in traffic despite me pushing even harder on the brake. The brake was completely unresponsive at this point. I avoided rear ending the car in front of me by swerving around him but could not avoid the vehicle farther ahead in traffic and hit the right rear of a uhaul storage unit towed by a vehicle and the BMW flipped onto its right side. Miraculously, we walked away with only minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Seat restraints and airbags worked perfectly which is the only kind thing we can now say despite having no prior issues. Whether it is an onboard computer malfunction or not we will never own another BMW. . . And if the other online posts have been there when I purchased the vehicle in sept 2012 (and had I read them) then I never would have purchased the vehicle. Coupled with other carcomplaint. Com, BMW community blogs, and NHTSA posts surrounding 2012 and 2013 X3 events of the identical nature there should be an immediate investigation as to the simultaneous and concurrent event of the throttle acceleration while braking, and the brakes failing (as if the computer thinks the brake pedal is the gas pedal?) . . And a recall before deaths occur . . . Though it is likely they've already occurred since the dead can't testify as to a problem that other BMW dealer service departments fail to replicate and therefore discount. The back hatch of our vehicle also flipped open allowing items to fall onto the highway (despite no impact to the rear of the vehicle) though all passenger car doors remained closed. The vehicle has been totaled. We would certainly not get into that car ever again even if it were repairable.
The problem with the 2008 BMW X3 transmission is going to get someone killed!! this transmission does not respond when depressing the accelerator at random times & has done this since the day I bought it. It happened once after pulling away from an ezpass booth - the car just froze and would not accelerate nearly causing an accident. Now it has caused an accident. How are you not doing anything when this has caused deaths!!! here is a link to a blog that shows many BMW X3 owners have the problem - some have had their cars replaced by BMW and others have been ignored. This is a serious safety issue that is being ignored by the manufacturer (similar to the Toyota issue). Please investigate before someone gets killed. . Read more...

2012 BMW X3. At a stop with foot on brake, car uncontrollably suddenly surges forward at full throttle causing crash. This has happened twice resulting in accidents both times and causing severe damage to front end of car. Fortunately nobody was in front of car or the unthinkable would happen. I have called the dealer and they claim no other incidents like this have happened. The lead technician also said there were no TSB's relating to this issue. I have called BMW north America and they are looking into this issue and will advise within 1-3 days.
My complaint is similar to the following: quote NHTSA id number: 10546733 the issue is when you step on the brake the engine races and the car continues to move forward. It doesn't matter how hard you press on the brake you still go forward. End quote brake and accelerator pedals can be engaged simultaneously, particularly in hard braking this 4d 4x4 xdrive 28i (and never happened with our three previous Bmws, which were sedans). Brake pedal application travel can easily fall under the distance to the floor of unapplied accelerator pedal. Traveling that distance the accelerator can simultaneously be depressed. BMW factory inspection found nothing out of spec. I can only conclude it's a design deficiency, a condition type BMW never admits, even if it corrects the condition later.
Our vehicle was stopped behind a single vehicle at a red light. Without warning, the vehicle accelerated and struck the car immediately in front of our vehicle. After striking the vehicle, our car then accelerated again into the intersection and was struck by a vehicle moving legally with a green light through the intersection. Our vehicle went to the curb where it accelerated once again which caused it to jump the curb and crash through a steel fence and into a light pole where it finally came to rest. There were three acceleration events with the driver's right foot off the gas pedal. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurer, geico and was removed from service.

We stopped for a light and the car started to accelerate while your foot is on the brake. The rpm gauge went up to around 3500 and the car was extremely hard to keep from going forward. This happened several times, the car was brought in for diagnostics but they could not find anything wrong. It happened recently and we are taking the car in again to try to resolve the problem.
Our X3 new X3 has surged violently ahead on two occasions now, on one occasion with foot on brake. BMW are denying any other examples of this problem exist, which by viewing this website clearly is not the case. I encourage all that have had this problem to lodge an official complaint to cause a full recall of this dangerous design flaw. Please note that we are in australia, and that BMW in germany are denying any knowledge of this problem.
For nearly the entire time I have owned the vehicle I have had issues with the car jerking and lurching while accelerating in the lower rpm ranges. Of late this has become so bad I am afraid to drive the vehicle. The problem manifests itself mostly between 1,800 and 2,400 rpm with the most severe issues in the 2,200 to 2,400 rpm range. When going from a stop the car will begin to accelerate and when it gets just above 2,000 rpm it begins to jerk and lurch with the tachometer fluctuating wildly. The 4x4 light then comes on and the car completely loses acceleration. This has happened many times while in the middle of a busy intersection. I have been nearly t-boned twice and now fear for my life driving this car.
2006 BMW X3 serious bucking of transmission above three thousand rpm under load going up a hill but also occurs on flat ground. Had the vehicle in for service multiple times at two different dealers and BMW denied that there was an issue. The car was still under extended warranty. Had service rep take a ride with me to show him the issue and he admitted that there was an issue with the car. In the end to make a long story short BMW said they would not fix the car because it wasn't a life threatening issue. I was on the highway a few times when the car started to buck and I had to move over into the slow lane because the car would not maintain speed. This could lead to a serious situation but BMW doesn't think so.

The contact owns a 2007 BMW X3. The contact stated that when the vehicle was in drive or reverse, it would lurch forward or backward about 100 feet suddenly. When the contact tried to change lanes and accelerate, the vehicle would begin to decelerate. The vehicle felt as if someone were applying the brakes. The contact also noticed a wailing sound from the rear end. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the failure could not be duplicated. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 31,000 and the current mileage was 33,000.
I was exiting a city park, I was stopped waiting for a steady stream of traffic to pass so I could make a left turn. My foot was on the brake pedal and suddenly it seemed as though someone had pushed the gas pedal to the floor as I was holding down the brake pedal. I held down the brake pedal as hard as I could because the car wanted to take off at a high rate of speed across the traffic. I have never experienced this in this car or any car before, needless to say it was very frightening. The engine was racing at a extremely high rate of speed. I can't remember if I put the car in park first or just shut the car off. I restarted the car and since it sounded alright I reluctantly put it in gear to drive home. I made it home safely without incident. This incident occurred on Monday, October 26, 2009 . We contacted your agency first, but we are phoning our dealer in indianapolis to come and pick the car up, it will not be driven until it is thoroughly checked.
My 2004 BMW X3. 0i has a hesitation on acceleration. When I am at a complete stop, and begin to accelerate on the gas pedal, light moving off from a red light, the car does a horrific amount of hesitating on acceleration, almost like someone is coughing, and does this each and every time I come to a complete stop and press the gas peddle. . Vehicle failed to move for several seconds when accelerator was pushed. This occurs infrequently when vehicle is coasting at a few mph.
The contact owns a 2006 BMW X3. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact was made aware of NHTSA campaign number: 08v384000 (air bags). Also, the dealer stated that the pillar accelerator sensor was defective. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 64,000. In addition, the contact stated that immediately after refueling, the "check gas cap" warning indicator light illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer, who determined that the gas cap needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 64,000.
When driver attempted to park vehicle in the garage. Vehicle self accelerated violently and crashed through the wall.
