36 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/19/2018

BMW soft close doors came open I was driving on the freeway yesterday 3/19/2018 and the passenger door on my vehicle came ajar. My vehicle is equipped with comfort access as well as soft close doors and this is a very dangerous situation as there were passengers in the car. I am uncertain as to why the door did this, I was traveling around ~60 mph, there was a ~20 mph headwind, however this is extremely unnerving.

38 Body problem of the 2017 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/21/2018

BMW X5 has a storage package, it adds two lashing rails and 4 lashing eyes in cargo/trunk. The finish of this lashing rails is like a razor. I was unloading a box and my pinky finger got trapped inside this lashing rail and it sliced the finger skin. It took about 30 minutes to control the bleeding from finger as lashing rails had sliced good chunk of pinky finger.

41 Body problem of the 2013 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/15/2017

Plastic fire wall bulkhead between engine compartment and cabin filter housing location, bulkhead is prone to breakage and will snap between the upper sections and the lower letting fumes travel into the passages compartment. Engine compartment chemical fumes will is smelled in the cabin of the car when the car is stopped and the engine is hot. Smell dissipates during driving at high way speeds. BMW part numbers 51717169419,51717169420,5171769421. This is common on all e70 X5 BMW, the plastic bulkhead separates due to the thin amount of plastic between the upper section and the offset lower sections of the bulkhead parts. Pressure from the hood and heat may cause the failure of these parts. A shop repair of this problem could cost up to 500$ and would brake again later on.

42 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/12/2017

At 48,500 miles I had a passenger door not closed light come on. I have the optional soft closed doors. I made an appointment but was not able to get in right away due to scheduling issues as the nearest dealer is 60+ miles away. By the time I got the car to the dealer it had 50,015 miles. I was told by the dealer that BMW was very strict about the mileage warranty and would not fix it despite the fact I called to make the appointment the week prior "while still below 50,000 miles". I was told I should have flat-bedded it in and I would have stayed below 50000 miles and it would have been covered. This seemed a ridiclous to me. The estimated cost with diagnosis was $1,100 aprox. For what appeared to be a door latch sensor malfunction. At 52, 500 miles the driver door is now having the same problem and is at the dealership. I know BMW has had other issues with their soft close doors and want to add my issues. My vehicle is a 2014 X5 35i xdrive. Order of events, 5-17 48,500 aprx. First issue with passenger door (intermittent then continous) scheduled appt 6-6-17 vehicle had 50015 miles. 8-17 driver side door light (intermittent at first then continuous) in dealer 9 -10-17 for repair. I did contact BMW about issue and they are looking into offering me "goodwill" service!!.

43 Body problem of the 2013 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/06/2017

On 4/6/2017 I parked my 2013 BMW X5 at 7:30pm, around 3am I heard a popping sound and the alarm going off . I looked out the window and fire was coming from under the hood. On 3/20/2017 I took it in for service because it did something crazy and the engine malfunction light came on, also there was a short in the fog lights. BMW said they they changed the coil in the engine and fixed the lights they also told us we need to upgrade the sos button or take a $300 refund and not fix the sos system . They completed that repair on 3/28/17 . 8 days later my truck caught fire.

44 Body problem of the 2017 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/20/2016

Our 2017 BMW X5 was involved in a fatal car accident and the driver's side air bag did not deploy causing a head injury. A driver was driving southbound lost control on ice and went into the northbound lane where another vehicle struck the out of control car causing those vehicles to hit our BMW and pushing our vehicle off the road.

45 Body problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/29/2016

The driver side door lock cannot be unlocked manually while driver is inside the parked car. This occurs frequently, but not 100% of the time. The BMW locks unlock manually by pulling on the door handle once and then pulling a second time to open the door. When this defect occurs, I cannot open the door. The only way to unlock is to use the power door lock switch. This is a safety concern because I cannot unlock and open the driver door if there is an electrical failure. The passenger side door had the same failure 18 months ago and I replaced the lock actuator personally. I did not log a complaint because I judged it as an exception case. However, two failures on two different lock actuators in the same car leads me to believe there is an intrinsic manufacturing defect.

47 Body problem of the 2007 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/23/2016

Takata recall I was in a serious accident on the interstate going downward on the ramp with my 2007 X5. My tire blew off the rim causing me to lose control and eventually strike the side wall. Was wearing seat belt during accident, seat belt did not restrain me and head hit windshield. Debris from airbag in steering wheel cut me in various places. Not all of my airbags deployed, only steering wheel and curtain. Second accident with a BMW truck where either only a few deployed or none at all. This issue really caused a safety concern with me because I was pregnant at the time of accident and wasn't fully protected at all. BMW are too good of cars for this major flaw. Also, I contacted BMW around December 2015 in reference to recall and was told that they would call when the part came in. Contacted them multiple times afterwards and was told BMW still hasn't sent part out.

48 Body problem of the 2006 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/18/2016

Driving on the highway about 50 mph, no vehicles near us, no trees, not even a bridge around us and we heard loud gunshot-type explosion and the small window to the panoramic sunroof just exploded. There was not an impact of any kind from the outside. The glass is broke from the inside with no puncture whatsoever. Glass is now falling and also blowing off the car. The cover shade is currently keeping it from coming in the car, but not for long.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that drain needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 49,000. Ah.

50 Body problem of the 2004 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/22/2015

The vehicle started smoking from under the hood while driving in town to the post office. Upon parking the vehicle at the post office, it caught fire under the hood and the fire dept. Had to be called to force open the hood to put out the fire. The entire front of the vehicle was damaged in front of the fire wall. The usps moved employees/customers to the rear of the building for precaution of explosion and smoke inhalation of the burning plastic, rubber and related parts. It was fortunate I could quickly park rather than being on the highway.

54 Body problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/03/2015

My husband was traveling on the highway at night. He stated that the car in from of his was stopped in the middle of the highway. He was unable to stop in time to avoid rear ending the other vehicle. We have a new BMW X5 SUV and he hit a Lexus SUV- both substantial vehicles. Both cars were not drivable following the accident. There is major front end damage- possible the car is totaled. I'm not sure yet. The air bags did not deploy. The impact fractured his sternum. He developed pneumonia 2 days later because of the pain in breathing- the accident was wed. Night but the fracture was not diagnosed. I took him back to the er fri afternoon, when the fracture and subsequent pneumonia was diagnosed. He was admitted to the hospital and is still there. The car was towed to the dealership. They want to take it apart to see what needs to be repaired or if it is totaled. I want to understand why the airbags did not deploy and am afraid if they start taking the car apart I will never know. I was told the NHTSA would help me with an investigation into this. Please help me and let me know what I should do next. Husband won't be released for several days possibly.

56 Body problem of the 2000 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/31/2015

Pulled vehicle into garage and front, right side started smoking. My daughter and I jumped out of the car and ran into the house to alert my husband. Within seconds, smoke filled the garage and fire was visible under front, right tire and through hood. I called the 911 and my husband tried to douse the flames. This not working, so my husband made the decision to back the car out of the garage, however, the car would not start. He quickly made the decision to put the car in neutral and pushed it from the driver's door frame to the middle of the driveway. Seconds later, the entire right side of the car was in flames. The fire department arrived and doused the flames. They also had to cut open the hood to ensure all flames were out prior to leaving.

57 Body problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/07/2015

The rear passenger door latch failed while driving. The door would not latch whatsoever, and as such, would swing freely to full open. Closing the door would only bounce it off the car body and would not latch. I inspected the latch and found the door latch to be in exactly the same position as the other passenger doors and the door would not latch when closing from inside, outside or with doors locked or unlocked. The interior door handle had no resistance at all or any feeling of being connected to the door latch. The vehicle was towed the dealer and the latch replaced as well as a connection with the latch and the door lock and handle. I was told by BMW that the door latch was improperly installed at the factory.

58 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/26/2015

The first time the front passenger door opened on it's own to the safety catch while merging onto a freeway. The result was a dashboard alarm stating a door was open. This vehicle is equipped with soft close doors option. The second time the left-read door opened to the safety catch while traveling approximately 20mph in a residential neighborhood. In both instances, the vehicle was only occupied by the driver. The vehicle was at a dealer who replaced several components within the doors.

59 Body problem of the 2002 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/29/2014

I've had to replace all 4 window regulators, my rear hatch seems to open for no reason, my rear window wiper is working with the switch in the off position, led's are going out again and now the dreaded apparent oil seperator with tons of grey smoke billowing out the back of the car after being left in an airport parking lot for 4 days whilst it snowed outside. Seems I've had every typical problem other than the car catching fire for no apparent reason. I have owned Bmws in germany and the us for a long time, however, I think I'll be switching brands with my next vehicle. BMW doesn't seem to be proactive enough for my liking with some of these way too common issues. This is a very low mile vehicle for it's age and it's acting like a model t.

60 Body problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/21/2014

While driving with my wife and both kids back from brunch Sunday early afternoon - the left rear door opened on its own. It was fully closed previously and about a mile or two down the road it popped open and became ajar while driving at approximately 25 mph. The car indicated a door was open. I had personally closed the door and am sure that it wasn't open when I started driving, the car would have notified me anyway. I pulled over in a parking lot and took photos which I've sent to BMW. My daughter in the back seat was strapped into a car seat with 5-point harness and separate arm rests. She says she did not touch the door in any way to trigger the incident. The vehicle is a 2015 X5 35d that I have owned for about a week and a half.

63 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/03/2014

Doors opened (on multiple occasions) by themselves, while the vehicle was in motion. The vehicle has soft close automatic doors; yet driver's door as well as rear passenger doors opened while driving. The dealer - BMW north scottsdale- claimed to have repaired it (based on BMW service bulletin), yet it occurred again within a few days. Eventually BMW north America bought the vehicle back, but did not respond to my letter regarding the defect.

64 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/06/2014

Doors open by themselves, when locked, while driving the vehicle at various speeds. This has been happening for no apparent reason. (this vehicle has soft-close doors, comfort access option) first incident was on 6 sept. 2014 at 6:35 am. I made a right turn and began to merge onto a dark highway and was startled when the lights turned on inside the cabin, a warning light/door open indicator illuminated in the dash and I heard air rushing through my driver's door. It had popped open and was ajar and the door lock was still down. I was driving about 35-40 mph beginning the acceleration to the speed limit of 55. (it was early morning, dark, and to suddenly have the lights come on and warning indicators illuminate was very scary) I wasn't able to safely pull over due to other cars around me and I couldn't pull the door completely closed by pulling on it. I had to hold the door with my hand until there were no other cars around. Then, while driving, I had to open the door quickly and slam it shut. I wasn't able to keep the vehicle completely steady in the lane when doing so. This could easily have caused a crash. I was positive the door was closed completely when I left the house, soft close doors always close completely, no door open indicators were lit, and my vehicle won't let you drive away if a door is open. I was on the road about 30-40 minutes or so when the incident occurred. The exact thing happened again, 2 weeks later, when I made a left turn into the driveway where I work, turned right and pulled into a parking space. While I was pulling in, the passenger front door popped open exactly like the first incident. We brought it into BMW on 7 oct. , there is TSB with the "fix", they had our car for 5 days. Replaced bowden cables and put in a modified part. On 2 November it happened again to the left rear door. I took pictures and a video. It's going back to BMW 4 Nov.

65 Body problem of the 2002 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/02/2014

In September of 2014 my 2002 BMW X5 front passenger side power window failed in the down position. Upon taking it into my original dealer, it was manually raised-closed and I had to return days later for installation of a new "regulator" at a cost of about $500. I was told this problem was "unusual". Now, nine months later and less than an additionial 5,000 miles on this vehicle (76,710) the front driver side window and rear passenger side window have failed; the front manually tweaked into the closed position and the rear opening covered with cardboard exposed to the elements and theft while the same original dealer awaits parts delivery four days from now before scheduled repair. . . At I expect another cost to me of about $1000! I have reviewed the many complaints in this section about this same issue!! to wit, it was well said by this one quoted here: "2002 BMW X5 window regulator. Car has 41k miles and already going on 5th window regulator issue. All four window regulators have been replaced and the issue occurred twice on the driver's side window. I have been told multiple explanations from the dealer including lack or use or too much use but this issue occurs on all BMW makes and models. BMW still has no solution that fixes this issue permanently and charges $300 to $600 for each window depending on front or rear. Too much to pay for a bad design. " I agree!! it is time for a recall on this issue. Now.

66 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/26/2014

The doors on my brand new X5 open slightly and become ajar while driving. When this happens, there is a 'thunk' sound and I can hear air noise due to the small gap. This happened on 7/26/14 to the rear passenger side door. BMW north America worked on the vehicle for several days replacing the rear door latch mechanisms and adjusting the two front door mechanisms. The problem was not corrected, on 8/23/14 the driver's door also became ajar while I was driving. When it happens it is somewhat startling due to the sudden 'thunk', particularly when it's the driver's door. On both occasions, when the incident happens, the dashboard lights up indicating that a door is not correctly closed. The doors are locked when this happens. The vehicle is equipped with soft-close doors. Noboby was touching the doors when the problem occurred.

67 Body problem of the 2007 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/10/2014

I was exiting a parking garage and hit a column, the airbag went off. I was transported to the hospital. I sustained a c1 neck fracture and an abrasion on my forehead. I was in a neck collar for 3 months with very limited activity and no driving. My car was declared a total loss. I am presently going to physical therapy 2-3 times per week for my neck.

68 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/19/2014

This happened to me while driving a brand new 2014 BMW X5 on 3 separate occasions (different days) the drivers door and the left rear passenger door both opened while driving. The door will open to the point that I can hear the wind coming through the door. I get a sign on the dash board that the door is open, interior lights goes on, however, without the audible sound to warn that a door is open. If I try to pull on the door to close it, it will not close unless I completely open the door and slam it shut. If I try to push the door to open it without pulling the handle it would not open either. I took my car to my local BMW local dealership after the second time it happened and they took it in to check: the electrical wiring on the doors, the locks and finally reprogrammed the car. Three days later the same issue happened on the driver passenger door while I was driving and as I was turning. I felt the door moving as it opened, got the visible display that the door opened however without the audible alarm again. The door locks I have have the automatic suction door shutting system and the door locks automatically engage as soon as I drive off.

69 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/16/2014

My vehicle has soft-close doors, when I started driving from home, all the doors were closed, and the doors were locked. After about 2 miles, I suddenly heard loud noise/air coming through the front passenger door. The front passenger door popped open while driving, not fully open, only a little to hear the noise and for the open door indicator to light up on the dashboard. This happened when my kid was sitting in the back. I have to pull over safely within few yards and closed the door manually. This is dangerous as my kids sometime sit leaning onto the door or take a nap with support from the door. I stopped driving the vehicle and took it to the dealership at the next available appointment. The dealership checked and returned the vehicle back saying they are "unable to reproduce".

70 Body problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/11/2014

My vehicle has soft-close doors, after closing the doors they popped open while driving, not fully open, only about a half-inch, enough to be ajar and for the open door indicator to light up on the dashboard. This happened 4 times in the first 5 weeks of owning the vehicle and BMW has not been able to fix it, giving it back to me each time with the claim that they are unable to reproduce the problem. On one occasion, and as requested by the dealership, I drove the car back with an ajar door without touching it or turning off the engine. The dealership took a photo and stated that this shouldn't have happened given that the car has soft-close doors and that it won't actually start driving if any door is still slightly open. I have a copy of the photo as proof, but the dealership upon instruction from BMW na was instructed to return the vehicle stating that it has no issue. The dealership did replace the locking mechanisms on the two doors (both front and rear passenger side doors) that became ajar, but it happened again, the fourth time.
