BMW X5 owners have reported 16 problems related to brake light on (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Brake lights are failing causing a major safety issue. BMW issued a service bulletin on this problem (sb-10040177-8428 / si b63 10 09) in March 2011. This vehicle has been serviced by the BMW dealership many many times, but the service bulletin was never mentioned or executed. Warning lights appear on the dash - issue is present both moving and stationary. Https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2013/sb-10040177-8428. Pdf https://static. Nhtsa. My 2009 X5 with 127000 miles recently indicated a burnt out brake light. While replacing the light, I found the rear upper right brake light was burnt out, the taillight itself is melted, and the socket is severely melted and scorched. On further investigation, the opposite side (left/driver's side) was also melted! checking online, this appears to be a common problem. I am afraid this could be a fire hazard and was surprised to learn there is not an outstanding recall on the taillights for this vehicle.
Brake lines corroded and ruptured with loss of brake fluid and decreased braking ability. Brake light came on after gentle braking on the road at low speed.

Tl- the contact owns a 2007 BMW X5 4. 8i. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph the vehicle began to decelerate. When the brake pedal was depressed it traveled to the floor board and failed to stop the vehicle. The vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle. There were no injuries and no police report was filed. The brake light warning light illuminated and the parking brake light illuminated. The vehicle was inoperable. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the red brake light, the brake booster, master cylinder and faulty lights and sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000. Gl.

The vehicle has no brakes what so ever. The pedal goes all the way to the floor. The only way to get it to stop is if you put it into neutral. I had it towed to the local dealership d patrick, and matt has told me that the recall replacement part was serviced a year and a half ago (which the vehicle has sat since October of 2014) that even though it failed it is not covered. There is a red brake light warning on the dash, they said no brake fluid came out due to the failure of the brake booster brake master cylinder and faulty lines.
The rear brake lights mounted in the tailgate failed. This is due to a known fault on the e70 model, where the poor quality sealant and method used to prevent the ingress of water into the lamp housing fails. This leads to corrosion of the connector housings and the failure of the unit which must be replaced in its entirity at great cost. As BMW are aware of this happening (indeed they issued a service bulletin admitting same ) si b 63 11 10 and the item is a safety component, I feel the cars should be recalled and the work undertaken at the cost of BMW and not the unfortunate owners. They should at the very least, replace the seals with the updated item (a neoprene gasket rather than something resembling bathroom caulk) at the next sheduled service before the driver finds themselves with two failed brake light units?.

The car was driving fine until I went to use the brakes as a slow speed 5-25mph. The brake pedal got really hard and the car was not stopping. I was coming up to a red light and there was a car in front of me I almost hit, because the car was not stopping as normal. This condition seems to be only when driving really slow, or just starting. There were no indicator lights (brake light). I checked the brake fluid and all other fluids, which were at acceptable levels. I turned off the car and back on to see if it was the computer or abs system, this did not help. I took the car to my mechanic (independent) and he explained that it was the vacuum pump that had an oil leak. This pushed the oil up the vacuum line and into the break booster. So I need to replace the vacuum pump, vacuum line, and brake booster. He and I did a check and found a recall on the same engine in different BMW models in that year and after 2007 in the same model. I researched online and found other people with the same issue I have and they came to the same conclusion the it is weird that the 2005 X5 4. 4 v8 is not in the recalls, even though it is exhibiting the same issues as other BMW make and models that have the same issue that have been recalled. I am concerned, because this is a dangerous issue that BMW and the NHTSA is aware of (because of recalls), but the 2005 v8 X5 does not fall under this recall????.

Brake warning light came on, went to my repairman who added brake fluid and said to watch for brake fluid spots on garage floor. Found spots coming from area behind front wheel on drivers side. Took it back for check and it was determined that line had rotted through. Hard to understand this was in enclosed protected area.
October 16, 2014 I started up my 2009 BMW X5 4. 8i sav and the left brake lamp malfunction alert came on, as well as, the check engine light. I had a friend check to confirm the brake lights could still be seen before driving off. I was able to take the sav to the BMW dealer on October 22, 2014. The dealer states "both rear tail light lenses assemblies require replacement. The brake light bulbs contacts burned, melting lenses causing intermittently brake lights inoperable. " I stated this sounds like a recall but instead they offer to service body repairs on the tail lights for a cost of $600+. I called Bmwusa regarding this, however, there was no record of a recall for my sav. I asked about the recall for 134,100 model year 2008 -2010 528i, 535i, 550i, and m5 passenger cars manufactured from March 1, 2007 - December 31, 2009 that was expected to begin during October 2013 since the X5 is based off of the 5 series but I was told again, there was no recall for my sav. This issue reduces the ability to warn other motorists of my intentions (braking, turn signal, reversing), increasing the risk of a crash. I believe the dealer should replace the rear lamp bulb carriers free of charge.
The contact owns a 2001 BMW X5. The contact stated that the brake light failed to shut off and the abs warning lamp illuminated. The contact mentioned that after parking the vehicle, black smoke started to emit from the engine compartment. After inspecting the vehicle, he noticed that the master cylinder was completely melted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 157,000.

I noticed the recall on the brake system for 2007 -2010 BMW X5, but think they should include other years of same model. My brake light came on saying check brake linings. Had the brake pads redone and after leaving was almost in 4 accidents due to the brake boosters failing. After full analysts from BMW they said 1800. 00 to replace, but have never had any problems with my brakes until they were replaced.
Today I brought my BMW X5 to dealer because the warning light goes on and off indicating a problem with the rear brake lights. Dealer said that the bulb holder had failed because of excessive heat melting the bulb holder. Last September, I had a new bulb holder assembly replaced for the rear turn signal after the same warning light came on and was then told that the device failed because of excess heat, melting the bulb assembly. These would seem to be related problems and safety issues.
My brake lights were out. BMW has indicated that both sockets have melted to the point that they can't remove anything without breaking things. I did some research online and found that people have had this same thing and fires have started. Worth investigating!.
Resistance in the electrical contacts on rear brake light is causing my brake light to intermittent stop working.
1. Brake light came on in 2006 BMW X5 on 8/1/10. 2. The vehicle was taken to BMW dealer to be repaired, on inspection they found "both front axle -cv boots split and spraying grease on brake calipers". The vehicle was repaired to BMW standard 3. On 8/11/10 the vehicle was in an accident- the brakes was sluggish and did not respond.
The right rear brake light bulb shorts out. Instrument warning for rear brake / tail lights activates. Problem occurs multiple times due to an apparent flaw in the brake light assembly circuit and plastic that forms the split circuit for positive (+) negative (-) connection points to bulb socket leads. To repair - the metal assembly needs to be bent outward (direction away from tail light lens) to increase tension between bulb socket electrical connections and metal plate of tail light assembly. Problem seems to be caused by weakened plastic that causes the metal plate in tail light assemble to loosen creating inadequate back spring tension between the plate and socket connectors. Recall on BMW 3 series for: no. 11v-438: lamps in rear quarter panel 2002-2005 3 series is described as the exact problem.
