The vehicle is at a&l motors in monroeville PA. The vehicle has suffered a catastrophic, cascading electrical failure caused by a known manufacturing defect in the roof antenna seal. Rainwater entered the vehicle through the defective shark fin antenna seal and flooded the telematics control unit(tcu). Because the tcu communicates directly with the main idrive head unit via the vehicle's most/bus central data network, the water-damaged tcu short-circuited and flooded the network with corrupt electrical data, hard-bricking the idrive system. A dealership engineer confirmed that water did not physically touch the head unit, eliminating user-error fluid spills. This cascading electrical failure has completely disabled vital safety systems, including the backup camera, forward collision driver-assist radar warnings, blind-spot monitoring alerts, and critical dashboard diagnostic notifications, creating an immediate highway safety hazard. Simultaneously, the active grille shutters (active air flaps) failed due to a defective internal actuator motor, creating a severe risk of sudden engine overheating and thermal shutdown. This component is under a 150k mile manufacturer warranty extension(sib01 12 19 and later sib01 03 25). BMW of north America claims manager joe 1-800-831-1117ext1427 has issued an arbitrary final denial for these repairs based on a hearsay rock wedged/strike despite no apparent physical damage and zero photographic evidence. BMW is actively evading its extended warranty obligations for the air dam and a pending class-action settlement framework (craft v. BMW na) on the idrive components. Additionally, this vehicle is actively subject to the critical BMW starter motor overheating fire risk recall NHTSA campaign no. 25v644/26v056. The dealership is unable to complete this urgent fire-safety remedy due to the same bricked idrive unit. Grounding an owner in an un-safe car with a bricked safety display and an outstanding unremedied recall.

I drive a 2015 BMW X5. While driving on a local street, I heard a severe banging noise underneath the car. I pulled over, and it turned out the front driveshaft had broken, striking the transmission pan and other parts beneath. When I towed the car to the shop the mechanic also found that an ac drain line dripped onto the driveshaft u-joint, causing rust over time, which led to this failure. There were no warning lights prior. If this had happened on the highway, it could have caused far greater damage--potentially to the transmission, transfer case, front differential, or even the engine. This was a serious safety risk, and I urge the NHTSA to investigate this design flaw and consider a recall on affected models before others suffer similar damage.

The vehicle's hvac system failed due to a leaking air conditioning evaporator core. This single component handles both cabin cooling and the windshield defrost/defog function, so its failure compromises a safety-critical visibility system in addition to climate control. The failed component is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: the vehicle is operated primarily in florida, where ambient temperatures regularly exceed 95°f and interior cabin temperatures without functioning ac can exceed 130°f. Operating a vehicle in these conditions causes driver fatigue, reduced reaction time, and heat-related illness — all of which compromise safe vehicle operation. Loss of the defrost/defog function also creates a visibility hazard in the humid and rainy conditions common to the region. Vulnerable passengers including children and elderly riders are at additional risk of heat-related illness. Confirmation: the failure was diagnosed and confirmed by an authorized BMW dealer service department as a leaking evaporator core requiring complete dashboard removal to repair, with a quoted repair cost in the multiple thousands of dollars. Inspection: the vehicle has been inspected by the dealer only. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Warning indicators: no warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared prior to the failure. The first symptom was sudden loss of cabin cooling from the ac system. Critical context: this failure occurred at only 12,500 miles on a five-year-old vehicle that has been driven an average of approximately 2,500 miles per year. Ac evaporator cores are not wear items and should not fail under any reasonable use conditions at this mileage. This is a widely documented defect pattern affecting 2019–2026 BMW g-series vehicles (x5, x6, x7, and alpina xb7). Numerous owners across multiple model years have reported identical premature pinhole evaporator leaks at low mileage. The leading technical analysis attri.

Driving at 70 mph down a clear stretch of highway, no cars in front, panoramic sunroof spontaneously exploded. Not under an overpass, no flying debris. Temperature was 54 degrees f. On a sunny day. The vehicles behind me pulled back as my sunroof showered them. Wife and daughter in vehicle, fortunately, the panoramic shade was closed, so no debris impacted anyone. As it’s visible on the pictures, the explosion was outwards.

Two nights ago I was at domino’s pizza. I put my car in reverse and the car died and the steering wheel locked up like the power steering was giving out I was able to start the car again, but still with no power steering assist and drove the car home about a mile away, but every time I slowed down or came to a stop sign or a stoplight, the car would die, and the battery light would flash on the dash and it would say charging malfunction once I got home we took a look at the engine and noticed that none of the belts were working at all and then I started to google what could possibly be the problem and a couple of different recalls came up recall number 12v550000 and that is engine and engine cooling engine diesel what the name of it is and the recall date is 1127 2012 and then the next one is 2012 BMW X5 diesel suvs from the model year 2012 923 BMW x fives have been recalled because they have defective engine belt, tensioners and cracks that develop along the welds if the belt tensioner fails there could be a sudden loss of power steering assist that is sounds like exactly what happened to my car and then there’s another one recall number b121918 which is from September 2019 and it is called idler pulley bolt and come to find out that actually was a recall on my vehicle, but the previous owner is the one that had it repaired so I’m not sure if BMW is willing to repair it again but there’s not a lot of miles on this cards a 2012 I bought it with 95,000 miles on it and it currently only has 131,000 miles on it. I’m just hoping for some kind of resolution here this is the fifth BMW that I bought in my lifetime and I for the most part I’ve had pretty good ultimate driving experience and good customer service and some good financing but I can’t see why just recall wouldn’t cover my vehicle. It’s currently in the shop. They’re doing a diagnostic on it and I will be getting that back later on today and I can report that back to you folks, hopefully it could be recalled. M.

The starter on my BMW failed, and it overheated and damaged my alternator to the point that I needed to replace it. The dealer and independent service center confirmed that this was the cause, but BMW is refusing to reimburse the cost of the alternator replacement. I was at the exit of a highway and could not even put the car in neutral, so my safety was significantly at risk.
My 2024 BMW X5 experienced a complete megatronics failure at 54,500 miles. The megatronics unit controls critical vehicle functions including transmission and engine management. This failure caused the vehicle to become completely inoperable — posing a significant safety risk. This failure occurred just 4,500 miles beyond the factory warranty on a barely 2 year old vehicle. A 2024 model year vehicle should not experience such a critical safety-related failure at this mileage. BMW corporate has been unresponsive for 7 days despite opening case number xxx and promising a 3-5 business day response. I am requesting NHTSA investigate whether this is a widespread defect that may affect other 2024 BMW X5 owners. Incident description: "vehicle suddenly entered limp mode while driving at highway speed on xxx in [xxx] . This caused an unexpected and dangerous loss of power while surrounded by highway traffic creating a significant safety hazard. Vehicle was unable to maintain highway speeds and had to be carefully maneuvered to the shoulder of the road. Vehicle was subsequently driven to BMW dealership in [xxx] where it was diagnosed with a complete megatronics failure. " information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
While driving through west los angeles, the vehicle suddenly began emitting white smoke from the engine compartment. There were no prior warning lights, messages, or symptoms indicating a problem. The smoke quickly intensified and turned dark. Thick smoke filled the air, and the cockpit, with the smell of toxic fumes. I safely maneuvered to the shoulder and exited the vehicle with my passenger. Flames erupted from the front of the vehicle. We called 911, which dispatched the fire department. The lafd responded, cutting open the hood in order to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed to a yard following the incident. The vehicle and its contents were declared a total loss. bwm north America dispatched a technician to inspect the vehicle. After inspection, the manufacturer indicated that the starter was the source of the fire. At the time of the incident, the vehicle was subject to a safety recall related to the starter with no remedy available. The failure occurred without warning. Both occupants were exposed to heavy smoke.

Immediately following this alert, the vehicle cabin filled rapidly with smoke. ?upon stopping and exiting the vehicle, I observed flames coming from underneath the car. The fire quickly spread to the rear and trunk area of the vehicle. The car is likely a total loss. ?this fire created a life-threatening situation, as the cabin filled with smoke while the vehicle was in motion, requiring an emergency exit before the flames spread. ?a police report was filed on the date of the incident (01/09/2026); a copy of the report is pending. My car was sitting on the driveway and spontaneously caught on fire. It has not been driven for the last week or two. Nobody was home, when it caught on fire. Our neighbors called 911.
My family and I were traveling from maryland to florida, with a planned stop in atlanta. We were driving our 2013 BMW X5 x drive 35i and were traveling southbound on [xxx] through greenville, south carolina when the incident occurred. While driving at highway speed, my husband suddenly noticed multiple error messages appearing on the vehicle’s display screen - air bag malfunction, 4x4 malfunction, stabilization, etc. He immediately began pulling the vehicle over. Within moments, he observed smoke and visible flames coming from the rear driver’s-side area of the vehicle. He urgently shouted for me and our daughter to get out of the car. What followed happened extremely fast, within approximately 15 seconds. I yelled for my daughter to unbuckle and run. In a state of panic, I grabbed our dog, and as we tried to exit the vehicle, the fire spread rapidly and aggressively. Thick, black smoke engulfed the area and we fled on foot, coughing and struggling to breathe from the smoke. By the time we reached a safe distance, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Thankfully, we were able to escape without physical injury, but the incident was terrifying and could very easily have resulted in serious injury or loss of life. The vehicle was completely destroyed, along with all of our personal belongings - cell phones, laptops, clothing, luggage, etc. We have since checked for recalls associated with the vehicle’s VIN and were told none were listed. However, a vehicle should not spontaneously catch fire while being operated normally on a highway. The sudden onset, rapid spread of the fire, and lack of warning raise serious concerns about a potential defect, whether electrical, fuel-related, or otherwise. We believe this incident was preventable and that there may have been a failure in design, manufacturing, or warning. We had the insurance company and BMW inspect the vehicle, but the fire destroyed the car entirely, and a cause "could not be determined. " information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information ac.
Starter can malfunction and start fire. Unable to park in garage due to potential fire risk. BMW is aware of the problem. Care was serviced at BMW dealer and said that they have no remedy. This recall is over 15 months old.
My sunroof spontaneously exploded yesterday, which sounded like a loud shotgun blast going off. Fortunately my vehicle was stopped at the time, but no rocks or debris had hit it to cause this then or previously, and nothing had fallen on it. No warning or other symptoms prior to this happening, the car was in mint condition and always garaged, 34,750 miles. Could have been much worse had I been driving at highway speeds and not stopped at a traffic light.
The componet that failed is the cars electric system in the rear. Battery gets so hot its melted a 2nd orange box on top of the battery. Burned a hole right through. Attempted to start the vehicle, now it's throwing big sparks in the rear battery compartment. Abs warnings, brake warnings, it leaks. It will not start again! we have no transportation. Noone seems to be very concerned about the matter. Atleast 7 open, very dangerous recalls on this vehicle. How come someone has to die from the companies failure to fix what they know is wrong? this vehicle is paid for, owned by a middle/lower class hard working single mom. I've seen to many cases of people who aren't financially threatening get delt a ball full of crap. All walks of life pay really good money for Bmws cars. How about BMW returns the favor and keeps their word. My car is a death trap according to BMW. What do we do if the company won't cooperate.
While on a stretch of two lane highway with no shoulders I got some flashing error messages that were too quick to read, then the car made the shutdown sound like when you turn the car off, and said “goodbye” on the screen. The gas pedal was unresponsive, pulled itself away from my foot. The screen showed what it normally shows when you turn the car off - option to charge immediately or precondition now. Car was just coasting. Eventually I hit the start button and the car turned back on. I think one of the error messages that flashed said driver assistance disabled… the car doesn’t have any advanced drivers assistance packages so not sure what that could mean. I have a vague memory of this happening to me once over a year ago, pulling out of the driveway, and having to hit start to turn it back on.
I am having a high voltage system box fault. I am within warranty but the dealership is denying me. My in service date is 6-2016.
I was driving 75mph on the highway and my sunroof exploded while driving. It sounded like a gunshot above my head and shattered while going 75mph. This vehicle and other Bmws that share the same sunroof glass are not fit to drive on the road until investigated further. There has been recalls and lawsuits for this. This a supplier or install issue when the car was manufactured. It’s not safe while driving and the glass spontaneously combusts into a million pieces. I have contacted BMW na and they stated there is nothing they can do about it. The service was paid for because I need a vehicle. I would like this investigated as a warranty claim so I can claim back the fees I have paid.
My 2020 BMW X5 (VIN available upon request) is subject to safety recall 25v-644 due to a fire risk. The recall has been open since November 2025. BMW has confirmed there was no available remedy for an extended period, and a BMW-coordinated service visit on January 15, 2026 could not be completed due to dealership issues. Despite repeated follow-ups with BMW north America, there has been no confirmed repair date and no consistent transportation support while the safety recall remains unresolved. I am concerned about the prolonged delay in addressing this safety issue.
Gas pedal broke while driving on the interstate causing driver to briefly lose control of car at the same time signal was lost from pedal to engine resulting in surge in the coolant system via ecm computer that blew radiator hose a moment after pedal broke. Pulled over and had car towed.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the engine/transmission mounts were diagnosed by sterling BMW (newport beach, CA) as “sagging” and in need of replacement at only 38,437 miles. The components remain on the vehicle and are available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? if engine mounts are in fact deteriorating prematurely, the drivetrain may shift during operation, affecting vehicle stability, steering alignment, and braking response. This could cause a sudden loss of control and create a hazard to occupants and other drivers. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. Sterling BMW performed the inspection on October 2, 2025, and documented the issue in their inspection report, listing “motor mounts are sagging” under “needs immediate attention,” with an estimated repair cost of $2,301. 12. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? BMW of north America was contacted on October 15, 2025. They verbally denied warranty coverage, refused to provide a written response, and did not investigate further. The issue has not been independently inspected by police or insurance representatives. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no dashboard warning lights or messages appeared. The issue was only reported by the dealer during the October 2, 2025 service visit. I have not experienced noticeable vibration, noise, or performance changes that would typically indicate failed mounts. This raises concern that the diagnosis may either indicate a premature defect or an unnecessary upsell.
While driving my 2025 BMW X5 xdrive50e, a “power supply malfunction – stop vehicle immediately” warning appeared on the dashboard, advising me to pull over and call roadside assistance. The vehicle had previously been repaired for the same issue at braman BMW in miami, but the malfunction recurred the next day after getting it back. Prior to this, the car was out of service for 103 days following an accident due to BMW’s inability to supply a backordered acceleration sensor. The repair was completed in August 2025. The repeated “power supply malfunction” messages raise concerns about the reliability of the electrical and hybrid power systems and potential loss of power while driving. The issue has been confirmed and documented by braman BMW. The component remains under BMW inspection.
The car suddenly dead in the intersection when driving the car, then can’t start the car, can’t shift the gear, stay in neutral position all the time. A message came out staying “brake problem “! after around 20 minutes, system messaged us “problem solved, ok to drive “, so we were able to start the engine and start driving as normal. I called service center let them know the scenario but got no answer. After 4 days same problem reoccurring again, this time car dead during left turn, fortunately no car hit our car (we were having 2 babies in the car). A lot of messages showed up, still mentioned “brake problems “, and after 15-20 minutes, message us again - “problem solved, ok to drive “. We have aaa tow the car to BMW service center later since we didn’t feel the message was reliable. The service center identified the problem and replaced the mechatronics control unit and returned the car to us after 7 days. I am concerned about the car’s system message, it’s mentioned “problem solved, ok to drive “, the message could misleading and have been fatal if we continued driving the vehicle to freeway. After we got vehicle back we were still very cautious about the car. I sent my concern to new central BMW alhambra CA about one month ago -to the service manager and requested a written explanation of why this faulty message occurred and how BMW engineer plans to prevent this from happening again. But there was no answer so far. There were a “brake problem recall” and a “emission recall “for this vehicle and we went through the procedure already before these 2 brake problems.
I was having intermittent starting issues. After a starter recall was done, things got worse. Idrive will not turn off and car wont start draining battery. Battery was replaced and car still having idrive and start issues. It would not start after being hot. I was told extended warranty is not covered and that the center console was the problem after diagnostic. They want approximately $3000 to repair. The car will not start at all and the idrive will not shut off. They said it will continue until repaired.
The ac evaporator failed due to a known manufacturing defect common across the BMW g-chassis platform (g05, g07, g30). This has created two severe safety hazards: ?the refrigerant leak causes the windshield to fog up instantly and unexpectedly while driving, completely obstructing my visibility and nearly causing an accident. ?chemical fumes and oil from the leaking evaporator are entering the cabin through the vents, causing dizziness and respiratory irritation for the occupants. ?BMW is aware of this systemic issue through numerous owner reports and petitions but refuses to issue a recall or provide assistance. This is a critical component failure that directly impacts vehicle safety and occupant health.

The evaporator for the air conditioning failed. BMW used an aluminum evaporator with yf coolant. Those combined cause the coolant to eat away the evaporator. Once the yf comes in contact to the air it turns toxic. This shouldn't fail at 82,000 miles.

When it rains water comes into the drivers side from the roof (sun visor area), and under the dashboard. Depending on how much rain, it leaves a puddle on the floor mat, and constantly drips on the driver as I drive.
My car said it overheated and would not start. After about 4 hours it did start and I took it to the dealer. They are saying that the battery and starter need replacement. I read that there was a recall for this exact reason on some specific vins for my car model and year. Even though mine doesn't fall under that category it seems like the same issue that was recalled for others. Doing some online searches it seems this issue has happened to quite a few people.
Safety recall has been issued for over a year and my vehicle has still not been repaired.
