1 Steering problem of the 2022 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/24/2026

Description of the complaint: I own a 2022 BMW X5 (VIN: [xxx], current mileage: approximately 39,500 miles as of 08/24/2026) equipped with the b58tu engine, which uses a plastic oil pump (part number 11418646454) rather than a metal one. I have not yet experienced an actual failure, but I am reporting this as a precautionary safety concern based on the following: 1. On BMW's official parts reference site (realoem. Com), the oil pump for my specific vehicle is flagged with an "attention! observe puma measure 65494813" notice, indicating BMW's own internal system has identified a known issue requiring special observation for this part. 2. I have learned that BMW korea has acknowledged this plastic oil pump issue following a government investigation, and has committed to a full free repair program for affected vehicles in korea. 3. I am aware of multiple reports and complaints from other b58tu engine owners in the united states regarding this same plastic oil pump issue. 4. Given that the oil pump is a critical component for engine lubrication, a failure of this part while driving — particularly during highway or long-distance travel — could pose a serious safety risk, including sudden loss of engine oil pressure and potential engine seizure at speed. I am filing this report to bring this issue to NHTSA's attention before an actual failure occurs, and to request that this be considered as part of any pattern analysis regarding b58tu engine oil pump defects in the united states. - **year:** 2022 - **make:** BMW - **model:** X5 - *:** [xxx] - **mileage:** 39,500 - **component:** engine and engine cooling (or "engine oil system" if listed separately) - **attachments:** realoem. Com information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2 Steering problem of the 2021 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/09/2026

I am reporting a front differential/front drive axle failure and a separate steering wheel/steering column adjustment issue. The vehicle was brought to an independent BMW/german repair shop for a routine oil change/inspection. The shop advised me that the front differential/front drive axle assembly had failed or was severely damaged and needed repair/replacement. The vehicle/component is currently at the shop and should be available for inspection upon request. I am concerned this could put my safety and others at risk because the front differential is part of the awd drivetrain. If it fails further while driving, it could affect drivability, traction, or vehicle control, especially at speed or in poor road conditions. The issue has been confirmed by an independent service center. To my knowledge, it has not yet been inspected by BMW, police, insurance, or government reps. A third-party warranty inspector may inspect it before repair. The exact cause is unknown. I was told BMW appears aware of this issue because the replacement part has a newer/superseded part number. This suggests BMW may have revised or updated the original part. I do not know if BMW has formally acknowledged a defect, but I am concerned this may be a broader issue given the low mileage. Separately, the power-adjustable steering wheel/steering column sometimes makes a grinding/vibrating noise when I start the vehicle and the wheel automatically moves out/down into the driving position. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages. The exact date it first appeared is unknown, but it has occurred more than once. I previously raised this type of issue with a BMW dealer and was told it was a known issue. The exact cause is unknown. I am concerned it could involve the steering column adjustment mechanism or related components. I am reporting both issues because the vehicle is low mileage and I am concerned they may be safety-related defects rather than isolated maintenance items.

3 Steering problem of the 2022 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/08/2026

On July 8, 2026, the vehicle unexpectedly stalled while I was driving in the middle lane on the I-95 highway, creating a safety concern. There was complete loss of engine power and low power to steering. The vehicle had to be towed to BMW of peabody, massachusetts. The vehicle had 30850 miles during the incident. During the inspection at service centre, I was informed that the safety fuse box and 12v auxiliary battery had failed which stalled the vehicle.

4 Steering problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/28/2026

Two nights ago I was at domino’s pizza. I put my car in reverse and the car died and the steering wheel locked up like the power steering was giving out I was able to start the car again, but still with no power steering assist and drove the car home about a mile away, but every time I slowed down or came to a stop sign or a stoplight, the car would die, and the battery light would flash on the dash and it would say charging malfunction once I got home we took a look at the engine and noticed that none of the belts were working at all and then I started to google what could possibly be the problem and a couple of different recalls came up recall number 12v550000 and that is engine and engine cooling engine diesel what the name of it is and the recall date is 1127 2012 and then the next one is 2012 BMW X5 diesel suvs from the model year 2012 923 BMW x fives have been recalled because they have defective engine belt, tensioners and cracks that develop along the welds if the belt tensioner fails there could be a sudden loss of power steering assist that is sounds like exactly what happened to my car and then there’s another one recall number b121918 which is from September 2019 and it is called idler pulley bolt and come to find out that actually was a recall on my vehicle, but the previous owner is the one that had it repaired so I’m not sure if BMW is willing to repair it again but there’s not a lot of miles on this cards a 2012 I bought it with 95,000 miles on it and it currently only has 131,000 miles on it. I’m just hoping for some kind of resolution here this is the fifth BMW that I bought in my lifetime and I for the most part I’ve had pretty good ultimate driving experience and good customer service and some good financing but I can’t see why just recall wouldn’t cover my vehicle. It’s currently in the shop. They’re doing a diagnostic on it and I will be getting that back later on today and I can report that back to you folks, hopefully it could be recalled. M.

8 Steering problem of the 2021 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/11/2025

Steering the vehicle in a low gear causes the vehicle to tremble or shudder. The dealership identified the problem to be the transfer case fluid. In manufacturing, BMW put a fluid which did not meet the specifications of the vehicle. The transfer case fluid is documented in the manual of BMW X5 m50i (2021) to be something which does not require replacement in the lifetime of the vehicle. I raised this issue when the vehicle was under warranty, but the dealership ignored the issue. After the warranty period was over (62,000 miles), the dealer recommended that I replace the fluid to fix the shudder issue. It is a very well known issue, and there is a service bulletin issued to the dealerships to deal with this particular case (sib 27 02 20). After the fluid replacement, the issue went away. This issue is widely known by the dealership, and it is a safety issue. I had to pay for the fluid replacement, and I believe BMW should have recalled this issue to replace the fluid for all X5s manufactured in 2020 and 2021. This is a safety issue.

9 Steering problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/28/2025

The integrated brake system and dynamic safety control both malfunctioned, not turning on. The car is totaled, so I don't think anything is available for inspection. There was water on the highway, and the car ended up going off the road into the grass and rolled over a few times before landing at the bottom of the ditch 100ft away. The car was not inspected because I was not aware of the major recall until I started looking into it. There was a snapshot of the dtc codes two weeks before the incident and there were codes specifically for the ib system as noted in the recall. There may have been one or two times throughout driving the car beforehand that a error light popped up, but then it disappeared almost immediately after.

10 Steering problem of the 2021 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/03/2025

My vehicle only has 28,000 miles on it has a very loud rattling noise in the front end. My mechanic said the steering linkage is loose and the steering assembly is leaking. I see there are other similar recalls for this vehicle but my specific VIN isn’t coming up under those recalls.

11 Steering problem of the 2025 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/28/2025

Multiple issues with the software. 1. Since yesterday, [xxx] car failed to start with the message "software upgrade failed". Sitting like a brick now - engine doesn't start and can't get the car off parking mode. 2, last week, the remote functions of the software as well as emergency call system stopped working. Called the local dealer BMW of north canton on June 25, ohio to check and fix and they scheduled it for Monday June 30. But car refused to start per point 1. 1. Couple of times got the message while driving that driver inability to drive detected and suddenly slowing down the car and veering it to a side. Transient actions. Took it to the dealership, supposedly a software bug was fixed but then the message flashed one more time recently. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

12 Steering problem of the 2019 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/11/2025

While driving in the city, I came across a red light. When the light turned green, my car's engine shut off and the power steering turned off (unable to turn). The screen remained on but I could not start the car. This has only happened in the city when I am driving at a speed of up to 15 miles/hr. Under comfort mode with the auto/stop feature on. This happened about 5 times on different dates where my car shut off but the screen was on. My car shut down in the middle of traffic, causing more traffic and an unsafe situation. Since then, I have turned off the auto/stop feature and have not yet encountered the problem again.

13 Steering problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/01/2025

A car from the other side made an illegal left turn in front of me, and I braked very early, yet still slid into them. The car had been inspected at the time at the collision center, and had dtc codes from before repair and after repair, showing the integrated brake systems had failures before and after. There was no mention of the results of the inspection until I asked after another braking incident occurred two weeks later. There were moments where a light would pop up for a second, then disappear. It may have happened only once.

14 Steering problem of the 2007 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/13/2025

The contact owns a 2007 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact used force to pull over to the side of the road. The messages "active steering inactive" and "change of steering wheel and 4wd malfunction" were displayed. The braking system warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the foot module had failed. The foot pedal was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer three times. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with an unknown failure. The cooling system was replaced. The contact related the failures to NHTSA campaign numbers: 13v045000 (service brakes, hydraulic, service brakes) and 12e029000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.

Failure Date: 08/20/2024

Received warning that steering effort changed requiring replacement of steering module.

17 Steering problem of the 2022 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/29/2023

My relatively brand new BMW X5 with only 7,500 miles was parked in an enclosed parking garage with valet service. The car only had its warranty service about 7 weeks ago and was in fine condition. There were no issues with the suspension or steering. There was no accident and the car has never gone over a hard bump or pothole. The lower right front control arm snapped cleanly as if from metal fatigue as a valet attempted to retrieve my car. The car was rendered inoperable, and thankfully this accident did not occur on the road. The car was towed to the dealership where they informed me the damage would require $16k - $18k of repairs to the axle, steering column and a host of related systems.

18 Steering problem of the 2017 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/06/2023

I was driving approximately 30 mph. As I continued to accelerate the fuel system light came on and the car shut off in the road. I had to have it towed to the dealership as it would not start. Gas fumes could also be smelled coming from the car. Once looked at by BMW service center I was told “ ekps and the fuel pump are intermittently failing. I was able to able to verify the concern briefly. Vehicle may lose fuel pressure randomly. Upon removing rear seats and inspecting harness, I found the wires going into the ekps to be burnt. The wires from the ekps to the low pressure fuel pump will also need to be replaced. ” I did research and saw that this was recall on other years of this model. Also the middle back seatbelt does not work. Also even after multiple alignments my car still pulls aggressively to the right causing near collisions and off roaring.

19 Steering problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/17/2023

Transfer case actuators plastic gear(s) might be worn out due to bad quality of the material used. On some of the BMW X5 models there was a problem with the differentials and a recall was issued to fix those. But some how some cars with particular vins went missing in that. Codes thrown by my system are : 005219, 005f3a, 006ec4 code 005f3a signifies that the transfer case actuator is not engaging properly. This problem put me at risk when taking a u-turn as the gears did not engage properly and my car did not accelerate on time. The on coming traffic came very close and I somehow avoided a t-bone collison. My cars dashboard produces warning signs occasionally when the actuator does not engage. This is a big problem as the 4x4 system stops working and puts the car in rwd mode. In winters this could be dangerous to people driving as it happens without the driver's attention. I have attached reports from NHTSA for the same issue on other BMW models where a recall was issued. I request NHTSA to issue a recall on 2011 BMW X5 xdrive 35i as the same issue persists.

20 Steering problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/22/2023

The contact owns a 2015 BMW X5. The contact stated that while his sister was driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering mechanism needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 16v704000 (steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was unknown.

22 Steering problem of the 2019 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/26/2023

Vehicle airbag/seatbelt warning light on 9/2022. Airbag (seatbelt) module replaced. Caused by condensation or leak due to BMW not sealing cupholders and placing key safety equipment directly under unsealed cupholders. I was told other modules likely damaged but airbags and seatbelt were first to go out. 2023 April/may - steering issues. Windshield wipers run continuously and cannot be turned off. Horn and turn signal also stopped working. Need steering column replaced. BMW said possibly also related to cupholder defect. I am concerned the unsealed cupholders are going to kill someone if airbags deploy unnecessarily or seatbelt/airbags fail. BMW should have not placed key safety equipment under unsealed drink holders.

23 Steering problem of the 2023 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/23/2023

The car had been preconditioned and driven within 45 minutes of my starting a route to the gym, all surface streets/neighborhood. I was in electric mode. I came to a stop at an intersection and when the light turned green, I pulled into the intersection to turn left and the car stalled. No power, no power steering. I put it in park and tried to restart in sport (ice) mode and nothing happenned. After a few tries it did start to limp and I cleared the intersection and pulled over. I was still unable to restart in sport mode, and kept getting red screens, or blank screens. After a few minutes, the car was able to start as if everything was normal, and I continued to drive. It was a very dangerous situation, and there were no further warnings or alerts. I was able to drive it home and to the dealership where it is now.

24 Steering problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

The vehicle backfires and stalls on the road due to Bmws defective pcv crankcase valve. The valve put pressure inside engine which it couldn't handle causing a blown gasket and oil leak, the leak fell on the serpentine belt and ac belt and they slipped off. Causing the power steering to lock up on me while driving. The engine has a whistling noise coming from it. I'm parking and towing to BMW. I can diagnose it without there scanner. This is crazy and very dangerous.

The contact owns a 2006 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving 45 mph, there was an electrical burning odor inside the vehicle. The abs, brakes, and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and was able to restart the vehicle and the vehicle was driven to the residence. On another occasion, the contact had to redirect the steering wheel into a different lane while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who changed the oil and replaced the alternator; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic and was diagnosed with multiple electrical failure. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer and a diagnostic test was pending. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 193,000.

Additionally, the windshield wipers remained on constantly and failed to deactivate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. The VIN was unavailable.

27 Steering problem of the 2013 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/07/2023

1) the power steering completely failed without any warning as a result of the serpentine belt failing catastrophically. 2) the failure happened in rush hour traffic right as the light turned green to turn left on an extremely busy intersection. I couldn’t turn the wheel and was a few inches from a head on collision with several large trucks which were also turning to the opposite direction. 3) the service center explained that this issue is the most common that they see on Bmws with the same engine. They alleged that BMW used a faulty power steering bolt that would leak fluid onto the belt, eventually leading to catastrophic engine failure due to the shredded belt being sucked into the crankshaft seal. 4) yes. 5) the steering was heavy but the BMW dealer assured me the vehicle was in excellent shape just a few weeks prior to this incident.

28 Steering problem of the 2022 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/26/2022

I put my car in reverse this evening and the screen kept clicking and unclick the back up assistance button. The steering wheel was moving on its own. I was not controlling it. The brakes were hard and I could not press down more than 1/5-1/4 of the way. The car was not in my control. After an hour on the phone with support and reporting the issues they advised they would tow it. I was able to put the car in reverse push a button off that was selecting without being pressed manually near the driving shifter to get the car to drive normally. At home the same issues continued when I tried to put it in reverse. Even when shifting to drive these problems persisted until I pressed actual tangible buttons in the car to try and move it out of that mode. I am not able to back the car up properly. I have had this issue before on a smaller way where in different scenarios I am unable to press the brakes. The brakes are hard like trying to press on a brick wall. This has happened when driving, when turning the car on and when backing up but usually it would shift back to normal within a few seconds. Today was different with the screen blipping selecting and deselecting the item. I have videos of the incident on my phone.

29 Steering problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/04/2022

I was driving to work one morning on the highway, when I suddenly heard a loud sharp noise from the engine bay that followed with the engine and battery lights turning blinking on my display with sudden loss of steering. I panicked but quickly put my vehicle into neutral with my hazard lights on and slowly hit my brakes till I came to a complete stop on the highway. I got my vehicle towed back and upon further inspection saw that the idler pulley bolt snapped completely off. I researched and saw that this bolt has been recalled twice already with the same issue. If this was during a heavy traffic situation it could have been far worse.

30 Steering problem of the 2022 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/01/2022

High pitched squeaking noise when steering (at~800 mi) -> inconsistent resistance (at~1,200 mi) -> delayed steering (at~1,600 mi). A high-pitched squeaking noise happens in steering every time driving over 15 minutes. I took it to the dealer for repair at ~1,000mi on 9/29/2022 and 10/4/2022. They confirmed the problem and recorded the noise. They said they couldn't fix the problem after some attempts. They promised the X5 is safe to drive while waiting for the parts. But the steering starts to show inconsistent resistance. On 11/9, I called the dealer, and they said BMW hasn't sent them the parts. I talked to BMW na customer satisfaction for help. The representative said she will escalate the case, but nobody ever contacted me until I contacted them again on 1/2/2023. Then the representative told me to wait 20-25 days for their administrative review. But after 20 days, the representative suddenly told me the review required BMW engineer's inspection. I told them they're welcome to inspect the X5, but the engineer never contacted me. On 2/7, my mom experienced delayed steering, and she was terrified. We basically haven't driven the car for safety concern. Since the delayed steering happened, BMW na suddenly changes their attitude and urges me to drive the X5 to the dealership. Should I wait for NHTSA to inspect the car? or I can just give it to the BMW dealership?.

31 Steering problem of the 2011 BMW X5

33 Steering problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? repair shop repaired the pulley because I couldn't steer the vehicle correctly. It would jerk me on the road. Vehicle is available for inspection but is already repaired by local shop. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I could drive but couldn't steer intermittently. Scary!! I couldn't make a full turns and there was a rough spot in the steering sometimes. Eventually it locked up an couldn't leave parking spot. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. But I already got it repaired. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? not that I know of. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no. I only smelled burning rubber or electrical components. Smoke from engine bay and screeching sounds. Worst part is it was intermittent which gives the driver a false sense of security to drive but almost crashed because down the road couldn't steer.
