BMW X5 owners have reported 92 problems related to steering (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of BMW X5 based on all problems reported for the X5.
Several components or systems have failed or malfunctioned, including the abs module, power steering, rear left turn signal connection, speedometer, and there are various error codes (p0313, p0500, p1093, p2098, obdii fail, obd bulb check fail). It is not clear if these components are available for inspection upon request based on the information provided. The safety of the driver and others on the road was put at risk due to the failure of the abs module, the absence of power steering, and the non-functioning rear left turn signal. The malfunctioning abs system can lead to reduced braking efficiency and increased stopping distances, while the lack of power steering can make the vehicle harder to control. Additionally, the non-functioning rear left turn signal can cause confusion for other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of accidents. It is not clear from the information provided if the problem has been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. There is no information provided about whether the vehicle or its components have been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. The warning lamps and messages, such as the dsc brake and abs lights, including the check engine light in the dash terminal, have appeared prior to the failure of the mentioned components. The error codes (p0313, p0500, p1093, p2098, obdii fail, obd bulb check fail) also indicate issues with the vehicle. It is not clear when these warning lamps, messages, and error codes first appeared.

Aug 25th 2020 morning, westport CT, my wife started vehicle and trying to back out from garage. Suddenly realized that she cannot turn the wheel as before and became extremely stiffen. She almost hit the garage wall. We took the car to dealership and this isan eps failure. We investigated online and saw several cases like us and some happened on the highway. We are lucky found this when we are still in our garage. Eps of BMW had recall(16v-704) which BMW only recalled 50 cars during 2-3 year of manufacturing period. I believe this recall should be expanded and certainly my car should be included which is within this time frame. It is a major safety concern.

The contact owns a 2015 BMW X5. The contact stated that while exiting off of the highway, the front wheels ceased and the contact was unable to maneuver the vehicle. The contact applied the brakes and pulled off of the roadway. The contact stated that the vehicle started to shudder with an abnormal sound coming from the front wheels. The contact attempted to drive the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to drive smoothly. The vehicle was taken to BMW of arlington (1105 e. Lamar blvd, arlington, TX 76011, 817-461-9222 to be diagnosed. The contact was the driveshaft and u-joints needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Vehicle shudders and hesitates when making a hard left of right turn from a full stop. (ie. Turning right on red or pulling out of a place of business onto an active highway. ) I read about 30 other complaints about the same issue - all pointing a faulty "transfer case". My vehicle 2011 bwm X5 35i has 76,000 miles. I do see a power train recall for the 2011 X5's but mine (for some unknown reason is not included and it is a 2011 (recall 17v138000) my mechanic said it was the transfer case and will cost $3,000 to repair.

I am experiencing an issue very similar to the steering issue as reported in NHTSA id# 11196600. The steering very suddenly developed very noticeable play in steering. At speeds above 50 mph or so, because of the steering play, the vehicle has a tendency to wander sometimes to the left and sometimes the right at which point the steering takes hold which is felt as a twitch in the steering wheel. This is most noticeable when the front end becomes light as in cases when driving over an overpass or on roads that undulate some. I took the vehicle to the BMW dealer in lafayette, in on 23-Dec-19 to have them look into it. They reported back that they didn't find anything mechanically wrong, but upon road testing the vehicle they confirmed that there is something wrong with the way that the vehicle handles and drives - thought to perhaps be a problem with the eps. They are looking into it further with next steps to be reported back to me.

The vehicle has had erroneous, extreme, and unexpected behaviors related to the active driving assistant features. Where the system activates too early, too late, or unexpectedly. After vehicle was delivered in November 2018 the car took an uncommanded left turn nearly hitting the moveable concrete barrier traveling westbound on the walt whitman bridge during heavy rain. Car was returned to the dealership. Was advised to turn off active steering intervention as a sub-feature of lane departure warning. System remained off. On June 10th the active steering intervention was reactivated and pulled the vehicle into another lane of traffic that would have resulted in a crash if the driver of the other vehicle had not pulled off into the side median. The active steering intervention was checked off and should not have activated and there were no visual cues that the system was on, active, and could take control of the vehicle. Car was returned to the service department. Shop foreman drove and confirmed the same action. Took vehicle back, and still can activate steering intervention when it is in the off position. Service manager said that BMW engineering has confirmed that this is how the system was designed. Automation that was not properly disclosed killed 300+ people in 2 separate aircraft accidents. This vehicle does not notify, disclose or in any way warn the driver that an automated system may take control and if this is the design of the vehicle it is not safe and could cause serious injury or death.
Vehicle has aggressive steering corrections/intervention. The vehicle is difficult to keep in the lane due to steering wheel play/wobble.
Tl-takata recall the contact owns a 2011 BMW X5. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed in for a takata air bag recall repair to the dealer walker BMW 6655 coliseum blvd, alexandria, la 71303 (318) 445-6678. When the vehicle was brought back it had a check engine light on and a note that it was at 50% capacity and needed to be returned to the dealer. The manufacturer stated that they would investigate when the contact called to complain . The dealer also stated the drive shaft needed to be replaced under an extended warranty. The dealer then said that they would charge to fix the drive shaft. The contact's main concern was that there were no issues with the engine or drive shaft before the vehicle was taken in for the air bag repair. The tow truck driver emailed the contact a written statement that the vehicle was working fine when it was dropped off to the dealer. The manufacturer stated that they would not cover the new repairs and backed the dealer for diagnosing these extra repair new issues. The failure mileage was 107,000. Tf.
Whiling driving the vehicle over 40 plus miles the steering wheel gets erratic and twitchy. It tries to makes micro turns sometimes to left and sometimes right making you feel as if its windy outside which is making the vehicle pull to one side or other. It becomes a challenge to keep the vehicle in lane.
In temperatures below 15 degrees, the steering becomes erratic and will push the car is directions when driving at lower speeds (below 35). At higher speeds on freeways the steering is requires constant adjustments, vehicle feels like it is driving through high winds. Both situations are dangerous.
Steering is always moving either right or left. Will never stay in center feels kind of filmsy. When turning car sometimes slips and will change direction of wheel and affect acceleration.
During cold temperatures, the steering has a twitch which causes small movements left and right without any manual input. It has the feel that it is receiving inputs from a sensor or other system, which requires override by the driver. It creates a dangerous situation.
#1: steering wheel jerks from side to side almost like a twitch in very cold weather on a cold start. Almost feels like driving on ice. Taken to dealer twice and they said "BMW is aware of this issue and not sure on eta for fix". Unacceptable and unsafe in cold climates. #2: automatic emergency braking doesn't work. I've had multiple instances when the car did not respond to emergency situations. Both on city streets and highway driving.
When driving the vehicle under 30 degrees f, the steering will pull left or right on its own, causing the vehicle to slide in slippery conditions. Speed does not matter and it will pull/twitch the steering right consistently or sometimes left. Very unsettling and extremely dangerous with no fix available. Car will do this from speeds of 1-65 mph.
When the vehicle is operated in cold temperatures (<10 degrees f), the steering will randomly "twitch". The wheel will move several degrees in either direction usually opposite the direction of the current wheel position. This pull is not caused by the driver or external factors -- the car's autonomous driving mechanisms seem to be malfunctioning. The car essentially feels like it is slipping or "floating". This happens at all speeds, but only when the temperature is very cold. This is an extremely hazardous problem, which makes the car a danger to anyone inside it, or within the vicinity of it. BMW is supposedly aware of the issue, but no fix has announced. The website below details other users issues and complaints. Https://g05. Bimmerpost. Com/forums/showthread. Php?t=1577605.
When temperatures are <10 degrees, steering wheel twitches and pulls left and right, the colder the temperatures, especially in sub zero temps, problem worsens greatly!! very dangerous and scary to drive car. Took the car to BMW service, they couldnt find anything wrong, did software update which made absolutely no difference. According to BMW blog, many many compliant about this issue for people living in cold climates in winter. Appears BMW is aware of the issue but so far has not done anything to correct the issue, again, this is extremely dangerous and needs to be corrected ASAP. This happens at all speeds. Once the outside temperatures are above 15 degrees, problem goes away.
The contact owns a 2001 BMW X5. The contact stated that the steering wheel seized while driving at a low speed. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 01v173000 (steering). The contact was informed to take the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to plaza BMW (11858 olive blvd, creve coeur, mo) where the failure was confirmed; however, the VIN had no open recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that there were no open recalls under the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

A bolt connecting the alternator to the motor has broken off causing the serpentine belt to come off resulting in the loss of power steering. This issue resulted in a recall and the vehicle was allegedly repaired in California back in 2013. However, this has happened again and has put the safety of my family at risk. I am aware that there has been an investigation that has been opened in about April of 2018 and we want our circumstances to be included in this investigation. BMW is currently refusing to cover the repairs.

The contact owns a 2012 BMW X5. The contact stated that the steering wheel bolt fractured and the steering wheel had to be turned with force. The contact drove home and discovered that the steering wheel bolt was fractured. The vehicle was towed to BMW of west houston (20822 katy freeway, katy, TX 77449, phone (855) 627-3055) where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel engine pulley bolt failed. The manufacturer stated that NHTSA campaign number: 12v550000 (steering, engine and engine cooling) was performed on the vehicle, but did not correct the failure and the steering wheel engine pulley bolt fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 114,000.
After receiving 3 recall notices in the mail regarding air bags early 2017 and most recent August 2017 recall regarding front driveshaft's universal joints, I have attempted to contact my BMW dealer in hollywood about the defected parts being replaced. There are times they do not even pick up the phone or they just say the parts are not ready without any follow up regarding estimated time frame or call back. What is the purpose of these recall notices if the dealers are not efficient enough to replace the parts?.

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 BMW X5. The contact stated after having the vehicle was serviced for recall repair on NHTSA campaign number: 17v047000 (air bags), the horn would active on it's own. The vehicle was taken 5 times to local dealer BMW of murray located at 4735 state st, murray, ut 84107, (801) 262-2479, where it was unable to have any remedy for the failure. The contact stated after the last repair the steering wheel was not aligned, the cruise control does not function. The volume control button and horn failed to function. The contact stated air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle has not been repaired as of yet. The manufacturer has been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 150,368. Dp.
2011 BMW X5 35i xdrive - my drive shaft broke (violent banging noise from the front of the car) while I was going 65 miles per hour on the freeway causing me to swerve to the left lane back over to the right lane. Super lucky that I barely missed hitting the cars next to me! I had hardly any control of the vehicle and the engine was still running while I coasted over to the side of the road / ditch. I lost almost 7 quarts of oil on the side of the road. My engine has a hole in it from the drive shaft. I did not receive a recall notice in the mail. The manufacture will be replacing my engine and some hoses that were destroyed. The dealer said this wasn't a recall, just an extended warranty since we have approx. 70,000 miles on the car. The dealer gave us a loaner car to use until our car is repaired. My concern is that owners should be notified immediately! had I known, I would of had my car inspected. . . Now I'm out $325 dollars for towing expenses, a car that might not ever be quite the same, live 1hr 20 minutes from the dealer, and the memory of the dramatic event.
I purchased car 2011-sole owner dealer state replaces engine pulley bolt 2012? driving in dark and rain in mountains nc 1/24/17. All of a sudden lost ability to steer without a lot of force. Then got dash errors "charging malfunction", "engine overheating" transmission failure "no abs" "drive cautiously ""turn off engine". I could not turn steering wheel hard enough to get off road. Pulled barely to side and turned engine off. Completely stranded and scared to death. Same broken bolt to be replaced. This is lethal situation and I am stuck with a killer car. Cannot afford to dump it. This car has required towing several times for engine failure that was "repaired". But I don't know what was done. In prior separate incident I was driving along engine light came on car sputtered and stopped-required towing. And takata recall also still waiting for airbags shoot shards. BMW will not replace. They think it is not hot in nc. I call 104 degrees hot.
Making a sharp turn result in vibration.
The contact owns a 2011 BMW X5. While driving approximately 7 mph, a loud noise was heard from the engine compartment and the steering wheel lost power without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed and replaced the belt bolt. The failure recurred after six months. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to a dealer. The dealer stated that a recall repair was already perfomed and could not be repeated. The vehicle was not repaired. The recall details were not provided. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
Shudder or vibration felt on steering with front wheels turned to right or left. Vibration felt when moving forward from a stop postion or backing up with front wheels turn to either side. I initially thought it was the tires but it is getting worst even with the new tires.
BMW X5m50d when it is raining (highway speed) and I use the brakes the car is turning left. Horrible feeling, I almost had a crash twice with my family because you lose steering control when you want to keep it straight . . . Normal conditions the car is braking perfectly. . . BMW dealer assembled some brake drying system but it is the same. I am afraid more cars are affected. The situation is more dangerous the strongest you brake and also depends on the rain density.
