1 Wiper problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/30/2025

On [xxx], while my 2024 BMW X5 was parked and stationary in an uncovered lot in fort lee, NJ, a large crack suddenly formed on the windshield. The crack originated at the top edge and extended approximately 8 inches. There was no impact observed, and the windshield had no prior chips or damage. The vehicle was exposed to sustained outdoor temperatures near 100°f for multiple consecutive days due to an extreme heat dome over the region. I suspect a thermal stress fracture possibly related to glass quality or installation. This type of failure raises safety concerns about the structural integrity of the glass. I have contacted BMW and am awaiting their response. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2 Wiper problem of the 2025 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/29/2025

The gloss finish of wood and metal on dashboard and center console along with glass prism gear and infotainment controller of these vehicles present significant visibility issues. These visibility issues manifest in reflections on the driver and passenger window glass in a manner that obscures side mirror visibility. The high gloss finish of the dashboard wood cause blinding reflections from the sunlight depending on positioning of the vehicle relative to the sun. The jewel-like glass of the gear selector and infotainment controller cause additional sunlight reflections which can blind the driver depending on the position of the vehicle relative to the sun.

5 Wiper problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/12/2024

Center rear view mirror stopped working and was replaced by chapman BMW of chandler but was replaced with a small aftermarket mirror that is causing dangers images in the mirrors because it’s splitting the image with the non manufactured mirror they replaced in my vehicle. I have attempted to resolve issues with chapman BMW of chandler and BMW north american customer care but was unsuccessful in getting a new manufacturer stock mirror reinstalled in my vehicle. The morrow placed in my vehicle is obscuring the vision of all oncoming traffic at night which is putting me at serious risk of an accident. I am requesting a mirror directly from factory to match the mirror that came stock in the vehicle.

6 Wiper problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

The driver's side and front passenger's mirror has a reflection from the trim of the a/c vent and is obstructing my view. The dealership will not replace the trim under warranty. It is a new car. Other owners of the BMW have the same problem as I have researched this problem.

7 Wiper problem of the 2018 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/30/2024

The windshield wiper fluid reservoir failed and leaked out all the fluid at 6. 5 years/34,000 miles. Without wiper fluid I am unable to clean the windshield which is a visibility safety issue. The car is currently at the dealer waiting for a repair part.

8 Wiper problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/02/2024

- as we were driving down a largely empty highway (CA 50 near pollock pines, CA), we heard an extremely loud bang. We looked back and the large rear sunroof (the non-moving one) had exploded - the glass was crazed with shatter fragments and continued to audibly crackle for several minutes. No significant sections of the glass had fallen out, but there were small splinters of glass (< 1mm in size) all over the cabin including on our 4 month old in the rear seat. - the vehicle is currently at the dealer service center awaiting service. It is available for inspection on request. As far as I know it has only been inspected by me and the dealer service representative. - the explosive sound caused a significant distraction while driving, and the glass fragments that rained into the cabin resulted in a minor injury to my hand and posed a risk of internal and external lacerations to all of us. - at no point were there any warnings prior to the explosion. Afterwards, there were also no warnings, though the problem was obvious. There are several nearly-simultaneous reports of this on new X5s: https://g05. Bimmerpost. Com/forums/showthread. Php?t=1974423&page=2.

9 Wiper problem of the 2018 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

Visibility issues are becoming more significant when the sun reflects from the dashboard onto the windshield. The black leather dashboard is separating along the base of the windshield revealing a white under side. This white reflects the sun and creates artifacts on the windshield visible in the drivers field of view. At the leather separates more and more, the distraction is getting worse and worse. The defective dashboard was reported to my local BMW dealer. I was told BMW will not cover it under warranty and the charge to replace the dashboard is over $5,000. 00.

10 Wiper problem of the 2015 BMW X5

11 Wiper problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

Headlight wires are made poorly. Susceptible to heat damage. The wire insulation cracks off, leaving bare copper wires to touch. Therefore, the low beams, etc will no longer function. The only solution is $3,000+ on new headlights.

12 Wiper problem of the 2016 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

BMW na is aware of this problem with the sunroof leaking water on the dashboard and damaging the electrical of the car. BMW na is colluding with the dealers to inform customers they are clogged to charge them money for a clog that is non existent. The sun roof are not clogged as BMW na and the dealers are saying I have video of the unclogged drain tubes and have caught the dealers all lying that they are clogged. I have video of this and can reproduce this collusion again again with the dealers lying.

13 Wiper problem of the 2021 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/01/2022

The auto dimming function of the rearview mirror and the driver side mirror does not work consistently. During nighttime driving, the auto dimming can suddenly turn off unexpectedly, blinding the driver. I took the car into BMW and they confirmed that it is a known issue with the positioning of the sensor that controls the systems that affects all X5’s, but they did not say specifically which year models. They told me their engineers are currently looking into a solution to the problem but they currently do not have a solution, and that they may issue a recall but couldn’t provide any further information. It is very frustrating and dangerous, as I have been driving home many times late at night and suddenly I’m blinded by headlights behind me and it makes it very hard to see while driving at night.

14 Wiper problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/21/2021

Headlight wiring loom insulation on both passenger and driver sides degrading heavily to the point of disintegration on touch. My driver side headlights have stopped working despite best attempts at isolating wires. I have received multiple headlight(low/drl) warnings and errors because of this issue. It has been verified by countless independent mechanics and hobbyists on this generation of car with no aftermarket or oe solutions. I have since almost collided with objects in the road while driving at night due to this faulty manufacturing. I also fear for an electrical fire which is bound to happen due to exposed wiring. This has been happening for a few months with no improvement and further degradation. I have not had it inspected by BMW.

15 Wiper problem of the 2002 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/02/2021

Car was parked. I tried to unlock my car with the key fob and nothing happened. I unlocked the door with the key and after getting in the central locking system would not work. After researching the problem I found that the gmiii controls the central locking as well as other items like the windshield wipers, interior lights, sun roof, and rear upper and lower hatch. I orders a new one and when I took the old one out to replace it I found that it had caught on fire and blew fuse 14. It appears a thyristor or tiac got to hot and set the board and case on fire. I had smelt a plastic smell earlier while driving so it may have been burning before I parked. I am attaching photos.

17 Wiper problem of the 2019 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/12/2020

The wipers over shoot hitting the pilar. I have switched my wipers three times in one year; I thought the wipers where of poor quality but everyone in the forums complains that the wipers jum certain sections in the windshield and then overshoot hitting the pilaf. It's incredibly difficult to drive in the rain due to this problem. There are going to be serious accidents because when your in a city managing with traffic and pedestrians and you can't see right in front of you because that's part of what the wiper misses .

18 Wiper problem of the 2002 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/29/2020

The dashboard went dark, only gauge that worked was the tachometer which I couldnt see because I had no dashboard lights. Stopped vehicle and took the keys out couldnt turn my lights off had no turn signals, the 3rd brake light was on all night long killing the battery I tried every fuse. Also my headlights wouldnt turn off the lighting controls were useless, and just kept smelling an electronic burning smell. I managed to disconnect all the lights except the 3rd brake light. Couldnt disconnect the battery because the lift gate to get into the back wouldn't work and the center console hazards stuck on and door locks didn't work I had to remove the glove box and all the paneling and track down the smell. Turns out the problem with this vehicle is that the rain manages to work itself down the inside of the a frame on both driver and passenger sides of the vehicle on driver side it destroys the obd module but on the passenger side it trickles directly into the lcm lighting control module which completely takes your eyes off the road when you cant see the dashboard your headlights start strobing on and off and then half get stuck on and half just dont work but when you spend the hours getting to the lcm to find out it has melted right into the side of your vehicle and you can tell it was on fire !! and this has happened to numerous people on the BMW forums im just happy my 3 year old son wasn't with me. And the real kicker is that I have no vehicle now and it cost 600$ for a new lcm that has to be programmed to your vehicle which will cost another 300$ when I could have hurt someone else or myself when you cant see but you can smell somethings burning its a hazard to everyone on and off the road .

19 Wiper problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/09/2020

As I was sitting in stop and go traffic, I hear a loud 'boom' similar to a small explosion. Clueless to what had happened because I clearly was not hit by a car or any object as we were sitting still. As I continued to drive I could hear the glass overtop of me continue to crack and seemingly shatter. I got home and found that my panoramic sunroof exploded outwards.

23 Wiper problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/03/2017

May 10, 2017 we purchased a 2010 BMW X5 with approx 70kmiles from east providence auto for $16,000. Two days later we brought the vehicle back because the windshield wiper fluid leaked onto the driver side floor, the sunroof wouldn't close and a burning oil smell was coming from the inside of the vehicle. After inspecting, the mechanic said the hose from the windshield wiper tank was needed replacement, he unjammed the sunroof and added 2 quarts of oil; however, he couldn't fix anything. May 22 we returned b/c the oil light was on and the burning oil smell still existed. But the garage was locked. The salesman said we would have to come back. May 24 we returned after blue smoke was coming from the exhaust. The mechanic said the owner was in portugal for two weeks and he couldn't work on the vehicle without permission. After returning and calling many times over the next month we met with the owner who said his mechanic left, we would have to wait. July 3 we had the vehicle independently inspected (see attached report). He inspected the engine and drained the oil. He recommended the engine be removed for further diagnosis and if not resolved the engine will eventually need to be replaced. After returning to ep auto the owner said the 30 day warranty was up so we filed a complaint with the rhode island dealers license and regulations office (complaint number am-1702213). We are awaiting a response from the hearing board. The case manager advised that it's impossible to force ep auto to take the vehicle back because we have to prove the issues are pre-existing and she is anticipating the hearing board will not rule in our favor. At this point we are extremely reluctant to drive the vehicle due to the safety concerns. I recently received a recall notice from you alleging defective airbags made by takata. Please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your help.

24 Wiper problem of the 2016 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/13/2017

While driving down the highway, without overpasses or cliffs near, the sunroof exploded outward, and raining glass down on to the passengers. The temperature was moderate. Vehicle has approx 6000 miles.

25 Wiper problem of the 2016 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/24/2017

Sunroof imploded while driving on the freeway.

26 Wiper problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/19/2015

The complete windshield washing system stopped working during an extended road trip. Pumps no longer engage. Because the washing system stopped working, this has contributed to the destruction of all wipers on the car. Failure of the washer pumps and relays is a very common issue with Bmws.

27 Wiper problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/22/2014

In late December 2014, the right headlight washer nozzle and cover fell off some time during use (vehicle speed is unknown; 45 mph is a guess). The vehicle did not have any snow or ice on it. In early March of 2015, both headlight washer nozzles and covers fell off within a week of each other, both times with no snow or ice on the vehicle (the vehicle is parked in a garage at both home and work). The right nozzle/cover assembly was hanging loosely, and was salvaged. In January 2015, BMW would not pay for repairs under warranty, claiming the parts were "exterior trim," rather than safety features, and therefore not covered. After the second incident involving both washers, BMW would not allow the dealership service center to deactivate the headlight washers (to prevent future incidences), claiming the parts are "safety features. " it seems BMW changes the designation of the parts based on what will cost them money. The washers are obviously safety features, and are included as part of the vehicle's optional "cold weather package," intended to keep the headlights clear of debris like road grime and ice. The parts are also obviously defective, as they keep coming off under normal use well within their expected lifespan, and initial research has shown this is a very common problem with BMW vehicles that have headlight washers.

28 Wiper problem of the 2002 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/02/2014

In September of 2014 my 2002 BMW X5 front passenger side power window failed in the down position. Upon taking it into my original dealer, it was manually raised-closed and I had to return days later for installation of a new "regulator" at a cost of about $500. I was told this problem was "unusual". Now, nine months later and less than an additionial 5,000 miles on this vehicle (76,710) the front driver side window and rear passenger side window have failed; the front manually tweaked into the closed position and the rear opening covered with cardboard exposed to the elements and theft while the same original dealer awaits parts delivery four days from now before scheduled repair. . . At I expect another cost to me of about $1000! I have reviewed the many complaints in this section about this same issue!! to wit, it was well said by this one quoted here: "2002 BMW X5 window regulator. Car has 41k miles and already going on 5th window regulator issue. All four window regulators have been replaced and the issue occurred twice on the driver's side window. I have been told multiple explanations from the dealer including lack or use or too much use but this issue occurs on all BMW makes and models. BMW still has no solution that fixes this issue permanently and charges $300 to $600 for each window depending on front or rear. Too much to pay for a bad design. " I agree!! it is time for a recall on this issue. Now.

29 Wiper problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

I'm reporting a quality escaped issue on most of BMW cars equipped with rear view camera system. I'm mild to hot days, the camera starts to flicker rapidly and shortly it blanks off intermittently. It's more noticeable on hot days but normal during cold days. This issue is also on most of BMW cars and yet to be recognized nor recalled by the manufacturer. It's unfair for a consumer to pay so much money and can't can't be reimbursed for the fix this discrepancy. I believe the cost of this problem should be covered by a BMW dealer. I fell like I've been robbed out of my wallet paying so much for all these issues popping up from time to time on scar that was not even 75k miles. This is a serious defect that could lead to crash during reverse driving or during parallel parking.

30 Wiper problem of the 2004 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/12/2013

Rear wiper and wiper fluid pump stopped working during a rain storm. I could not see through the rear window at all through the rear view mirror or by turning and looking behind me. Very unsafe for this system to break.

31 Wiper problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

The contact owns a 2008 BMW X5. The contact stated the windshield wipers continued to move while the engine was off, and the vehicle also stalled without warning. The dealer reset the main computer, removed the dashboard and replaced the windshield relay module; however, the repairs did not correct the failures; therefore, the dealer advised there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage were 91,000.
