36 Electrical System problem of the 2011 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 07/15/2013

On 01/05/2012, BMW service center replaced an idrive part and reprogrammed the car. When I picked up the car, I noticed ac is not working. Service center took it back and did a master reset. After that several times I had the issue and they couldn't fix it. On 07/15/2013, I noticed the ac is not working. It was 85f outside. I called the service manager and drove the car to him. He checked the car and confirmed ac is not working. They took the car and gave me a loaner. Next day they found some error codes stored in the car. While they are looking into the codes, ac started working all on its own. BMW says the error codes are bogus codes and instructed the service manager to clear the codes and return the car to me. Service manager is doing his best to diagnose the issue. But without Bmws help and support he can't fix the issue. It is extremely hot in jacksonville, FL and without ac in the car it is extremely dangerous to drive with a kid in the car.

38 Electrical System problem of the 2008 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

While turning on a constant radius clover-leaf on-ramp (right or left), a sudden change in steering angle was required to avoid an obstacle. As the electrically-assisted steering was quickly adjusted, a flat spot (or a heavy spot or a delay in boost) in the steering wheel/feel was encountered. In other words, more force was required than expected to quickly change the steering angle. If this is normal, it could interfere with emergency maneuvers to avoid obstacles. Personally, I find it to be unsafe as the steering feel is unpredictable. This unpredictable steering feel occurs anytime I need to make an abrupt change in steering angle.

40 Electrical System problem of the 2004 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 11/22/2012

While driving the steering light comes on and the steering locks in place. When u try to force it the car stalls out and the steering stays locked . . Extremely dangerous!!!.

41 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 11/21/2012

Air bag warning light has been on for three years. Have had 3 tests incl lieth BMW test that verifies it is the passenger side occupancy sensor mat. This defect is a known problem in many BMW models. BMW refuses to fix it yet requires me to do these diagnosis (for a fee) over and over. Not only that - they have drastically raised the price to repair to >$1400. I seriously question the safety of the car and feel BMW uses the issue as an opportunity to make high profits off the safety concerns of its customers.

42 Electrical System problem of the 2007 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 09/04/2012

While driving straight, the steering wheel tends to stick, force is needed to steer to the left or right or to even keep it going straight. Once you start turning it seems to feel normal until you start to move the wheel back to the neutral position, then you realize the wheel is now stuck in this position. It usually takes quite a tug to get it moving again! it appears to be getting more extreme and requiring more force to move the wheel. I have owned the car for about 2 1/2 years and have always thought it steered a little different, I just figured it was a BMW thing and it being a smaller car that was causing it to handle this way!! I don't think that any more!.

43 Electrical System problem of the 2006 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 07/17/2012

The steering wheel intermittently locks up at higher speeds (50-70 mph). Usually the issue happens when the temperature is above 85 degrees.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 07/04/2012

The problem is that the steering wheel does not return to center without considerable assistance. The problem is definitely worse when car is "warmed up" and is also worsened by increased outdoor temperature. This is a real safety concern. My dealer charged me $104. 00 for diagnostics and told me to keep the battery charged. This has had ne effect on the problem.

45 Electrical System problem of the 2005 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

Bought the 2005 z-4 BMW used from a dealer in high point nc. Drove it and enjoy driving until the warm weather. The steering sticks to a point of being dangerous. To compensate, I steer to the left and car pulls to the left then I bring the steering back towards the center and feel it sticking so I compensate by steering to the right. The whole time down the highway I fear for my life driving this car. I really had to concentrate to keep the car from steering off the road and I'm sure it appears I'm driving erratically to others on the road. The warm weather will soon be here in north carolina and I'm just scared to drive it. The car otherwise is beautiful. But if I'm going to be a repeat customer to the BMW line I need to get this fixed or they should recall it and I don't feel that I should have to pay for this problem and sounds like many many others have had the exact same problem from what my research shows me. Please help before someone is killed. Seriously I'm scared ! I contacted BMW in ohio and they need me to validate the problem through a dealer which I will do but I have to wait til the weather is warm again. Luckily I am employed and will be able to pay the $125. 00 diagnostic fee. The consumer also stated every time she rode over a bump in the road, the radio would shut off and then come back on at random times. The dealer was unable to find any loose wires. Also, the oil filter housing was leaking and an oil leak separator was sauing air to dispel into the engine. Updated ivoq 04/16/13.

46 Electrical System problem of the 2004 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 01/06/2012

The steering binds at almost any speed. I noticed it when driving straight forward. When a correction in direction is made the wheel binds until greater pressure is applied. It seems the problem is requiring even more pressure for the correction. I called Bmwna and they told me they have heard nothing about this problem. I am in fear for my safety as well as others around BMW's z-4 2004.

47 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 01/03/2012

The power steering assist has failed on the car making it very difficult to steer. Luckily it failed while on a straight part of an interstate as my daughter was driving the car and this severely frightened her. She did not overreact and we took appropriate measures to get the vehicle home. Online research indicates that this issue was being investigated by NHTSA in 2010 but can not find any indication that an actual recall is in place. This is a very dangerous thing to happen, especially in a state with a lot of winding roads (tennessee). I purchased the car used last year and also had a water pump failure that resulted in a blown engine. I wish this issue had been investigated also as I understand that it is a common failure with this particular engine. There is also a problem with the speedometer and fuel gauges reading incorrectly. I read that one owner was contacted by BMW north America after they filed a complaint regarding the power steering with NHTSA and BMW voluntarily fixed the problem for the owner. I hope I have the same luck after posting this complaint. Thank you.

48 Electrical System problem of the 2004 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

The contact owns a 2004 BMW Z4. While driving approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The failure occurred several times. The dealer determined that the vehicle experienced an electrical failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

49 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 10/07/2011

All sensors lit up and will not go off: tire pressure, traction control, brake, air pressure, airbag, etc. Sensors.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 10/06/2011

My steering wheel light goes on then the car handling becomes very difficult to control. The problem started one day on the highway. The wheel was suddenly hard. This problem happens several times a day: when I start the car and at any random time while I'm driving. I have to restart the car in order to get the power steering back (before the next failure). This is very dangerous since nothing is telling me when the next issue is going to happen. I'm always scared to make a turn or to change lanes.

51 Electrical System problem of the 2005 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 06/27/2011

Driving on freeway, going about 72 on a warm day, about 86degees. Felt car slow down, like tires were stuck to pavement and could no longer steer car. Steering wheel became very tight, and car was hard to handle, and hard to turn.

52 Electrical System problem of the 2005 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

First the check engine light on, I went to houston momentum BMW dealer to check and they found out that there was a faulty signal from somewhere they were not sure about. They gave me an estimate for than a thousand dollars to find it and repair it. It would cost more if they found out the real problem. I told them this should be under BMW warranty, but they said it wasn't. I refused the work. This case happened few years ago. Now I have air bag light on, I don't know why. I don't dare to go back to dealer to check because I'm afraid they will rip me off again and again. I hope one day I can get rid of BMW and find a more reliable car to drive.

53 Electrical System problem of the 2009 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 08/26/2010

The contact owns a 2009 BMW Z4 convertible. The contact was driving approximately 10-20 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. He was able to immediately restart the vehicle without hesitation. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure would occur intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the computer was replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle would no longer operate following repairs. The vehicle was left with the dealer where the contact was awaiting further diagnosis. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 11,000 and the current mileage was 11, 200.

54 Electrical System problem of the 2005 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

I have a 2005 BMW 3. 0 w/auto transmission. My car has had two recurring issues from time to time starting with the electric power steering light engaging with the power steering going dead at idle or at corners. The other problem is that my car has stalled with the car shutting down thrice on I-95 and on local roads. Needless to say, it was a life and death situation twice with my girlfriend swearing never to drive the car again. How it happens? at speeds of 40mph or less, eps, abs, brake, dtc comes on and off with the navigation screen opening and closing. Then abuptly at slow speeds, the car just shuts off. Remedy: pull over, off the car and on it back again and go.

55 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 07/20/2009

My 2003 BMW Z4 has sticky and/or binding electric power assisted steering control when the temperatures are 75 degrees or warmer, making the car difficult and dangerous to steer. Because of this, oversteering results, which causes the vehicle to lunge into the next lane or onto the shoulder. This becomes a serious safety issue when changing lanes or making minor steering corrections. The problem goes away overnight when cooler temperatures prevail and the power steering unit has had a chance to cool down.

56 Electrical System problem of the 2004 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 04/19/2009

2004 bmx Z4, steering became unresponsive while driving at highway speeds. Over correction to regain control narrowly avoiding traffic and center divider. At slower speeds it felt like there was no steering fluid in car. Very difficult to turn. BMW dealer had replacement steering column in stock it took 2 days to replace at a cost of $2942. 02.

57 Electrical System problem of the 2006 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 09/03/2007

Passenger airbag deactivation light always on (since 20,000 miles approx) together with dashboard airbag warning light. Garage diagnosed faulty passenger seat pressure mat and advised passenger airbag would not deploy in the event of an accident. BMW norwell MA, who sold the car to us, stated no recall on 2006 model (conversation with their service dept. Of 10/21/2011) although all Z4s up to 2005 were recalled for mat replacement. BMW were clearly still fitting defective pressure mats in the 2006 models and would appear to be not only jeopardising our safety but also avoiding their responsibilities.

58 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW Z4

Failure Date: 01/16/2004

My car stalled on the road going fifty miles an hour on university city blvd. In charlotte north carolina. I was almost rear ended by another vehicle but luckily the driver was able to avoid me. I have never been that scared in my life. This was the third time the car had broken down in nine months. The first time being may 27, 2003. The second being October 25, 2003. And the third time being January 16, 2004 (this is the time it stalled going 50 miles on the road). The dealership, BMW roadside assistance, and the managers at hendrick imports were all aware that my car had stalled on the road! being that my life was at issue I was upset and they assured me that it would never happen again. I even let them keep the car an extra few days to make it sure the porblem was corrected. This is why I did not take any previous action. Now on March 5, 2004 about six weeks later the car broke down again with the same problems as the first three times. This time it stalled while driving in my apartment which is not a big deal because there is no traffic!! what if I was on the interstate and it stalled again, I would not be writing this letter to you I would be in the ground! they just want to fix it and put me on the road again, but I know the car is unsafe but they do not seem to care. I just wanted to let the NHTSA know about this safety issue!! thank god I am still alive to write this letter to you!.
