BMW Z4 owners have reported 13 problems related to steering failed (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Eps failed while driving on state highway. Power steering alarm came on and steering became very stiff and hard to steer. Pulled off the road and turned car off and back on. Fault reset but the alarm ocassionally still sounded. Took to BMW service, checked out and said the eps box needed replaced. Dealer serviced car and continued to drive car for five months. This time steering failed again while driving , but the steering returned. Headed to home and steering again failed and alarm came on. Steering now is stiff and cannot drive. There was a recall (12v3002000) Nov 2011 through 2012 was recalled. My car mfg in oct. 2011. So BMW said our car was not covered. I feel BMW should look at earlier cars as this is very dangerous. If my wife would have been driving the car when this failed she would not have been able to overcome the steering failure. First failure at 74,000 miles.

My wife took the car for a drive and right in front of our house luckily with no warn the steering electic motor failed. The BMW dealer says the eps is bad but the only way to fix the problem is to replace the whole steering column at a low discounted price of 3750. Not sure why BMW can't just replace the defective part. My wife could have been in very bad accident if this event happened on the highway or even on the regular roads.

The car had been sitting outside in approx. 85 degree weather for about 2-3 hours. My wife and mother in law were driving done the highway. She initially noted that the steering felt "sticky" or "different". A few moments later while traveling at approx. 55mph the steering failed to respond or more accurately felt stuck. She was unable to turn the steering wheel and the car started to move to the right side of the road toward the guard rail. After slowing the vehicle and continuously trying to turn the wheel it finally responded. She pulled off the road and sat for a few moments to regain composure and check vehicle. There was nothing outwardly apparent, no flats, nothing under car, nothing wedged in engine compartment or underneath car. She exited the highway and drove slowly back to the house. The car did exhibit signs of "sticking" again, but did not lock up. A quick search on the internet has revealed this is a very common complaint on the Z4. This is a very serious safety concern and now my wife is afraid to drive the car.

2004 BMW Z4 steering system fails to perform properly and is unsafe when the temperature is somewhere above 80 degrees (f). On all warm days, the steering becomes unsafe - heavy, and does not perform properly - it becomes hard for the driver to control and "notchy" to steer.
For several months, my 2003 BMW Z4 has felt like it was slightly stuck in the center position while driving on the freeway or highway. Recently, the steering has failed completely on engine start-up. In other words the car will barely turn. After it happened, I discovered it will work if the ignition is turned off and then re-started. However, the car still sometimes displays the stickiness in the wheel, especially on warmer days. The car will steer but seems to get stuck slightly when the wheel is centered. In searching for a solution online, I discovered that this has been a problem for many cars of this model.

2004 BMW Z4 with 26k miles. When outside temperature is inthe 90s or above, the steering, particularly on the highway, develops a notchy or stickiness that does not allow you to track straight. Causes you to jerk the wheel back and forth to maintain a straight of way. There are many other similar complaints on this component for 2003-04 model years. Independent BMW mechanic has inspected my vehicle and states that the control module/electric motor/steering column has failed and needs replacement. He stated that there appears to be a trend on this.
