My vehicle was receiving a PA state required annual mechanical safety inspection by an ase certified mechanic. I was informed that the "sway bar" which stabilizes the steering system had failed, and as a critical part of the steering operation, the vehicle could not pass a PA state mechanical safety inspection. I had the "sway bar" replaced with the gm re-designed part at considerable expense to pass the PA state safety inspection. The ase certified mechanic advised me that he had replaced many mechanical failures like mine (broken lug ends) before gm changed the design to one that could withstand the application (a solid forging as opposed to a sheet metal fabrication). I wrote to the ceo of Buick/gm (see attached letter) to request an explanation as to why a known safety defect like the "sway bar" was not recalled when it was first discovered, resulting in a re-design of the "sway bar" for subsequent production models. I received a telephone response from the gm executive team, who called himself "debbie", at 1. 855. 880. 1500, extension 5917674, reference number 9-10348786083, on 26 July 2023. "debbie" refused to document gm's position on this issue in writing, and only emphasized that a safety recall with this know safety issue was never issued. It appears that gm has deceived the nthsa and gotten away with a cover-up. Regardless of the time that gm has kept this hidden from the NHTSA, gm should be required to recall all affected vehicles and repair them at their expense. Thank you. Ronald f. Laskowski pe.

Unknown; the issues started around 6 months ago. Just casually driving like usual, and my steering wheel would lock up and be ridiculously hard to turn, which is scary because its happened while turning through lights and intersections and trying to even just park my car. And on some of those occations the trac and abs sensors would come on, but not all the time.

I never was informed of any recalls on my 1999 Buick Century. Now I see all the advertisements on television, in the paper, online that the car can burn up. Brakes, steering, ignition. Which was repaired for 400 dollars. My engine warning light is on constantly, and they can't find what's going on. Once, it just completely stopped.
When to court on 11/12/13. Was told if I did not take the car I would get charged storage. Went to the garage were the car was. At the court house was told car needs rotors. They took the car out of the garage and parked it running. I got in it stepped on the pedal and it went down on the floor with the brake light on. Had to get the car out so I got it to my home. Beside structural damage from rocker panel filled with spray foam no brakes. You take corners and the car bangs from the frame moving. This car is suppose to have 39000 miles on it. The steering wheel is worn out and the struts bang and bounce. This car is now sitting in my yard. I would like a dot person check this car for true mileage. I ran my own garage and did state inspections and I really think some one altered the mileage. My inspection number was 1495 back in April 2000. . Updated 11-25-13.

I was making a left turn and the steering locked and there was a loud bang. I wasn't able to complete the turn causing me to drive off the road and onto a lawn. The steering wheel wouldn't go back to the correct position and it seemed to be in manual steering mode. I could barely move the wheel. The car is not driveable at this time.
The contact owns a 1998 Buick Century. The contact stated he intermittently had to apply heavy force to the steering wheel in order to turn the wheel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was told the failure was resulting from the lower pinion bearings. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 132,500 and the current mileage was 133,000.
In January of this year my 2003 Buick Century began with panel lights flashing on and off at various times making the guages and speedometer impossible to read. Very expensive estimate to fix. Then in February was driving home at night and the abs light came on. Took to shop and they couldn't get it to do it. After third time had it repaired. Took whole driver side wheel assembley to get sensor $500. In March driver side window began going up and down by itself. Took it to shop and they are unable to find a problem. The car only does it when the panel lights flash on and off. Bad vibration in the car around June. Had all four tires replaced and new brakes and rotors. On August 4, 2011 vibration started again, then started a popping noise in the front end when starting and stopping. Car vibrates so bad you can not hold steering wheel at 45-50mph. This pop and vibration is now coming from front right side. Not sure what it is yet.
Driving thur ohio from mich ,hit large pot hole, did over one thousand dollars damage to the steering, could have been a lot worse, car must not be made properly to withstand hitting pot holes, this should be a safety issue there are hundreds of pot holes in all states . The state of ohio does not responsiblety for there pot holes they are a drive at your risk state. . . .
1) car needed towed to garage for starter failure. As it left the garage the steering locked up and sent car almost into oncoming traffic with 2 children in the car. There had been no other warnings of a problem. 2) it happens every time the steering is turned one direction then back to the other. It does not just come back. Especially to the left. I almost crashed 4 times just trying to get it home. 3) I filed an insurance claim on the tow company thinking they were responsible. They looked at it and said they found nothing wrong, that nothing was bent. After getting on line and investigating, I learned of this steering problem. It matches it perfectly. I had someone knowledgeable of mechanics look at the car and they said the steering gear rack needs replaced and not to drive the car as it is. It is to dangerous to drive. I also just had new intake manifold gasket from the decool problem gm has. Now I have a car that I can't drive and can't afford to fix. Nobody assumes liability and I think gm should have had this recalled and corrected.
Leaking power steering rack, less than one year old, replaced by dealer under warranty. Dealer did not do a front end alignment causing severe premature tire wear. When tires replaced, examination showed alignment extremely out of specification. Had to have outside supplier do proper alignment.
My 1999 Buick Century has a steering problem, my local dealer (dewey griffin) told me so what! that''s just the way it is! I won't let my wife drive it on the freeway or leave town because I feel it's unsafe.
Grinding noise in right front wheel while turning to the right.
Any small change in slope of road causes the car to abuptly and unpredictably swerve in that direction. Took to dealer, superior motors of orangeburg, SC many times and they say "all is in specification". I consider this to be a dangerous car to drive-requiring constant attention to catch the swerves before they cause an accident. If this condition exists with other people driving this model, then serious accidents are bound to happen. I know of no other course than to report this condition in this $25,000 car. Please help me and maybe many others.
The design of the magnetic variable steering on vehicle results in poor handling, vehicle sways at 35-55 mph, poor struts contribute to the unstable feeling causing bouncing.
The consumer noticed that when the vehicle was being driven in cold weather conditions the vehicle was very difficult to steer. The consumer stated that the steering wheel would bind. The cause of the problem has yet to be determined.
