2 Windshield problem of the 2002 Buick Century

Failure Date: 03/23/2004

I have a 2002 Buick Century. Last year I had problems with the windshield getting stuck in a vertical position. It was under warranty and was fixed by the dealer, who handed me a receipt indicating replacement of cost approx. $400. 00. Well it happened again and this time not covered under warranty. I took it to a responsible auto repair shop and was told that whoever fixed it last year did it the cheapest way possible, that's why is broke again. How was I handed a bill from Buick dealer saying it cost $400. 00 to replace parts? now I have to pay $150. 00 this time. What was Buick dealer trying to do gouge me, impress me. I don't think I'll buy another Buick.

6 Windshield problem of the 2001 Buick Century

Failure Date: 12/10/2001

Color of the dashboard, light gray, is causing a severe glare in windshield during daylight hours regardless of the weather. The dashboard contains a horizontal split that runs across the width of the dashboard. The forward section of the dashboard contains the air (defroster) grill. This causes the glare to contain reverse images of the air grill and the horizontal split line. Dealership examined vehicle and informed consumer nothing can be done to remedy this problem.

9 Windshield problem of the 2000 Buick Century

Failure Date: 08/28/2000

When the rear windows of a Buick Century are wide open and the front windows closed, the car shakes violently, to the extent of causing panic. We tried first one window and then the other, finally both together, and the violent shaking continued. It would be impossible to drive this car even for a few minutes under these conditions. The salesman even took out a brand new car and it acted the same. I have asked friends who have a Buick Century to verify my description, and they all have the same reaction. When I called the manufacturer, I was told it was a design fault and basically told to live with it.

10 Windshield problem of the 2000 Buick Century

Failure Date: 07/21/2000

While driving an alamo rental car on July 21, 2000, on I-94 outside of minneapolis, minnesota, the left front window, driver's side, literally exploded in my ear. I was going approximately 60 - 65 mph and what occurred was literally an explosive decompression. The window glass shattered, most going out the window but some fragments entering inside the vehicle. I controlled the vehicle and steered it onto the shoulder where we stopped. Because of the tremendous speeds of the other vehicles passing by, I quickly tried to push the excess glass that remained in the door to feel safe in driving the rest of the distance to the airport. We tried to contact the alamo emergency number - when my travelling companion contacted alamo and told them it was an emergency, she was told to hold on. She did so but was disconnected. We travelled to the aiport below speed limit since the left window was no longer there and there were fragments of glass that, at times, would blow inside . When we reached the alamo rental car agency, they appeared to be little concerned - they said they would contact the manufacturer to determine other similar occurrences. Unfortunately, the manager of alamo tried to convince me that it was a rock that had struck the window and caused the problem. Since I was driving the vehicle and felt the sudden decompression and explosive quality of what happened, I believe him to be wrong. Thankfully, the glass did not blind me or prevent my controlling the vehicle. However, under different c ircumstances this event could have proven disastrous, not only to me and my passengers but to other vehicles on the road. I believe a complete investigation is warranted.

11 Windshield problem of the 1999 Buick Century

Failure Date: 07/24/1999

This customer was not given the opportunity to test drive this vehicle before purchase. This car is "unsafe " to drive. The why's are listed below. Mym basic complaint is the constant annoying reflections in the windshield and even makes it differcult to see through the windshield under certain driving conditions. Some of my experiences and examples. Stopping and crossing a elevated railroad tracks. Very differcult to distinguish a horozontal reference line related to the railroad tracks and the horozontal line on the windshield in the bottom third of the windshield resulting from the reflection off the top of the large dashboard surface. Construction cones located along the side of roadway, difercult to distinguish their assigned locations. When using full depth of the sun visor, your one third see thru area of the windshield is contaminated with the full annoying reflections from the top of the dashboard. In NY state, the vehicle registration, and the inspection certificate must be attached to the lower left hand corner of the front windshield. These two stickers cover a 7x3 inch surface area. During the daylite hours driving, the reflection from the 7x3 inch stickers is further enlarged onto the corner of windshield as a large black area, resulting in further loss of safe driving windshield visiabilty seeing area.

17 Windshield problem of the 1998 Buick Century

Under certain conditions, condensation collects on the outside of the windows reducing visibility through these windows to near zero and making it impossible to see approaching traffic. The glazing materials around both windows (weatherstripping) do not make contact with the surface of the windows during raising or lowering. Therefore, the condensation cannot be removed from the exterior of the windows without exiting the car and manually cleaning the surface. For example, when the condensation collects while I am traveling on a highway, it is necessary for me to stop on the side of the road, get out of the car, and clean the surface of both windows in order to proceed safely. The dealer was first notified of this defect within 60 days of my purchase. At that time, I was advised by the dealer's repair shop that the windows were not aligned properly and that adjustments were made to correct the problem. The shop reported that the corrections were made to correct the defect, but the defectb was not corrected. I have taken the car to other dealers and returned to the original dealer on several occasions during the past two years in an attempt to have the defect corrected. Each time I have received a different response. In September 1999, I notified the manufacturer (Buick division of gm) of this and other safety defects, but I did not receive a response. Late last month I returned again to brown's Buick to seek repairs, and I have now been told that the windows are operating as designed. I believe that the failure of the window systems and related materials to clear the condensation that periodically collects on the exterior surface creates a safety hazard to me and to others on the road. Although the manufacturer and the dealer have had several opportunities to correct the defect, no correction has been made.

18 Windshield problem of the 1998 Buick Century

Ppg, the manufacturer of the 1998 and 1999 Buick Century windshields is manufacturing the windshileds with a latent defect, which causes the windshield view to be hazy when driving directly into the sun. It appears that the laminate layering between the glass sheets has failed. I also noticed this same defect on a 1999 Century as well. Dealer was notified and confirmed the defect but general motors customer zone rep was unwilling to proceed further. The defect will probably not cause any accidents, but may impair or distort a person's clarity of view, when driving into the sun.
