The contact owns a 2003 Buick Century. The contact stated
that when using the windshield wipers in inclement weather they
would not operate properly and would remain on one side. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed him that he would need to have them tightened. The windshield wipers were repaired but the failure continued to occur. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000. Updated 2/22/11

I was on 275w. When my right window wiper arm started to stop then it died, my husband told to see what I could find out on repairing it and cost on the computer, I ran across this little thing on the computer about 1997 Buick Century's and the right windshield {component: visibility: windshield wiper/washer linkages} well when I read all of it that describes what happen to my wiper. When I called everybody said no not your car, and I said I don't understand because the same thing is wrong with mind.

Windshield wipers stay straight up/down. They don't rest in the proper place.

Consumer stated while driving in snow and rain windshield wiper fluid froze up. This caused poor visibility because the snow stayed on the window and became dirty. Without windshield washer this created a problem.

The wiper on the right side of the front windshield stopped operating during inclement conditions. The vehicle is at the dealer for repairs.
I have a 1997 Buick Century with windshield wiper problems. By way of history, I have had to take this vehicle to the shop twice (and I believe possibly a third time) because the windshield wipers would not function. Each time, the problem related to some fitting that had to be retightened (I was never shown the precise part by the repair personnel). Now, although the windshield wipers will work properly in the rain, when they are turned off, they go to the upright position, obscuring the windshield. I have learned today, from the NHTSA website and similar sources, that these problems are well known to Buick. Upon reflection, and with 20-20 hindsight, I believe it is highly likely that this problem is caused by the excessive torque generated by the wiper motor at its highest setting (when set at the top setting, the wipers generate so much force, they cause the entire vehicle to shake).
Consumer states that while driving and no warning the windshield wiper will work intermittently and it will hard for the consumer to see during rainy weather. Dealer notified. Mr.

In sudden downpour (approaching tornado) outside of nashville this a. M. Visibility was severly reduced with wipers on lower setting. When wipers turned to high to increase visibility wipers locked and stripped, forcing driver to pull off the interstate and wait for the rain to stop. This is the second time this has happened. The first incident was in March 2001 - right after purchasing the used vehicle. We encountered heavy rain at interstate speed of approximately 55 mph. The wipers locked together and the mechanism stripped the right wiper so that it would no longer function. Upon resuming driving with just the left wiper, the left wiper then proceeded to go off the windshield entirely and driver had to pull off the on the side to tighten bolt. The primary driver of this vehicle remembered the first incident and never uses the higher wiper settings so has not incurred any further problems. The auxiliary driver, myself, had forgotten that this was a problem. Not being able to use the highest setting makes for dangerous visibility in heavy rain though and the design of the wiper operation should be investigated as even being able to safely pull off the interstate is severely hampered.
Windshield wipers have been standing straight up when in an off position for 6 or 7 years. Found the campaign and then the recall and tried to get a remedy from the on several occasions as well as gm ,to no avail. . I was made to buy a motor for the windshield wipers and that worked for a little while. Then last summer or fall I went back to the dealer because now the issue looked to be a recall, and they told me there was, but not for my VIN#, and I was made to pay $70 for the adjustment. . It is now not working again ,and I am very frustrated. It is a 1997 Buick Century. I have to keep the windshield wipers on in the delay mode all the time, rain or shine in order to not have them stand straight up and block my vision. . I feel this is dangerous, but that the dealer and gm will not take responsibility because I found the information on my progressive car insurance site. They always bring up recalls for your cars.
At 7:00 pm (dark and heavy rain), windshield wipers in motion and right wiper locked into left during heavy rain creating zero visibility.
While driving in a very heavy rain fallwindshield wipers on the driver's side stopped working. Had to pull over and ask assistance from a passing motorist. They got it restarted, but consumer is afraid tha tit will happen again in the rain.
While driving in a rainstorm the passenger side windshield wiper stopped working. Consumer got out of the vehicle, and noticed the nuts were loose in the wipers. Consumer then tightened the nuts, but they will not stay tightened.
Windshield washer/wipers when used, spray would squirt the water three times, cause very poor visibility which especially when uses at night. Dealer was notified. Consumer stated the windshield washer should spray only once.

Passenger side windshield wiper deposits water directly in the line of vision of the driver on the up-stroke, temporarily blocking drivers vision during moderate to heavy rainstorm until the driver side wiper clears the driver side of the windshield on its downstroke. Dealer service manager said nothing can be done by dealer to correct problem. Problem is worse for taller drivers due to the angle at which the passenger side wiper stops on the up-stroke. I am six feet three inches tall and the passenger side wiper stops directly in the center of my line of sight, forcing me to lean to the left substantially during a moderate or heavier storm.
