6 Steering problem of the 2003 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 12/12/2018

On [xxx] original steering rack and pinion was replaced at 138974 miles by established reputable garage with napa part which was remanufactured. That part failed [xxx] at 141443 miles. That part failed [xxx] at 145999 miles and was replaced with napa part which was remanufactured. That part failed and was replaced at [xxx] at 157999 miles with another napa remanufactured part. That part failed about July 2023 and has not been replaced . The repair garage that had been replacing this rack and pinion stated they will no longer replace it since the outcome would be the same. The problem in all instances is that the hydraulic fluid leaks out of the unit through the rack and pinion which in turn affects the steering. The leak starts slowly and eventually increases to the point where the fluid will leak from the unit even when the car is not in use. I reported the problem to napa in writing [xxx] and received a telephonic request for documentation [xxx] which was furnished along with a statement that this matter was being looked into. I am not interested in any monetary refund but am only concerned about the safety of parts sold as "remanufactured" . The automobile repair shop is aware of my concern and supports my complaint. Both the repair shop and myself have documentation. I believe that based upon the number of times this part has failed indicates a potential problem in at the remanufactured automobile parts industry for at least this particular part and possibly others. I am willing to furnish any information I have. Thank you -- [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

14 Steering problem of the 2003 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

While driving on a 40mph road, the engine spontaneously lost power - the power steering and brakes also ceased to function as a result. The radio and lights were still on. After guiding the stricken car to a safe area, I turned the engine back on and was able to drive as normal. The issue repeated roughly a week later at lower speed while going over a speed-hump in a shopping center parking lot. Note: the issue occurred following the addition of apartment and mail keys to the keyring. I separated the additional keys from the car's key following the second incident. The issue has not repeated since.

15 Steering problem of the 2000 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

Starting early June my son called me to inform me that the Buick was stalling out on him all the time. He said that he could be driving at any speed and the car would just shut off, causing all electrical, steering, and brakes to not work. He attends school in western pennsylvania in the mountains and this worried me. I had the vehicle serviced and each time was diagnosed with different things and nothing fixed the problem. I have since switched vehicles with him for his safety and have contacted my local Buick dealership to find that the ignition cylinder is the cause of the failure that the ignition cylinder is periodically loosing connection to the key which has a chip in it (quits talking to), and shuts the vehicle off. Like an alarm feature. The dealership informed me that this has been an on going problem with the Lesabre and other vehicles for quite a while. In order to fix it I will have to purchase a new ignition cylinder, possibly a couple of keys, have them sent to a locksmith, get them keyed to the cylinder, then install the new ignition cylinder. Yet it is not one of the vehicles listed on the gm ignition recall list. How can such a safety issue go overlooked and also unreported. The vehicle is an excellent vehicle while running but I feel that gm should face the fact and take ownership for all of these ignition failures not just a few makes and models but all gm manufactured vehicles. This is an extreme safety issue, my son said he was nearly rearended when the vehicle shut off on him a number of times at different speeds while trying to pull off the road for safety. Or he was stuck holding up the flow of traffic with people beeping at him while he had to wait in the middle of the road till the car would start again. Pretty scary!!! thank you,! and please look out for the little guy and hold gm responsible.

16 Steering problem of the 1999 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 05/27/2014

Accident may, 27, 2014, ncic 9245, officer id 17604 the above accident was caused by a mechanical failure of the Buick le sabre, 1999, license # 4efd440. Not driver error. Leaving highway 193 turning onto hwy 49, (going toward auburn) being a 2 lane narrow winding road, the engine of the above vehicle died, locked up the steering, and had no brakes. I was unable to stop or control the car. This was the first time there was a loss of brakes. In trying to control the car it caused me to veer off the road to the right hand side. Upon leaving the road and crashing the air bags did not deploy. The vehicle has had this problem before verified by witnesses with the exception of the loss of brakes. Passenger in car on trip from fresno to auburn, in March of 2013, (mechanical failure of car engine, died, no steering), this happened twice, on same day. Csaa was called to tow car. 17 Steering problem of the 2004 Buick Lesabre

Upon starting the vehicle, the steering wheel remained locked. Turned the car off and then back on to unlock the steering wheel. This has happened 6 times in the last 5 or 6 weeks.

18 Steering problem of the 1997 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 03/14/2014

While accelerating up to speed from a stop, all of a sudden there was a noticeable thump, the steering was erratic, the car vibrated and shook. The power steering was inoperable. We slowly drove the car home (2 miles) and upon examination, we discovered the engine cradle frame was hanging down, only a few inches from the ground. The engine cradle mounting washers (2 on each side) had rusted thru, allowing the rear of the cradle to drop. I also noticed the right side sway bar was broken off at the mount on the lower control arm. The entire front suspension and wheel assemblies are fastened to this cradle, so that's why the steering became erratic - there was no longer any solid attachment to the car. After carefully examining the attachment points, it is obvious that this is a serious safety and structural design flaw. These cars should be recalled for the safety of the public. We were lucky that we were on a straight road at a slow speed when this happened. I noticed there are many, many complaints on the NHTSA website of this exact same issue.

19 Steering problem of the 1997 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

Was driving car and it started steering hard drove home approx 35 miles to find the k frame washers had rusted off and the engine was not being support. Has it fixed and same thing happened again going less than 5 mph and steering went out and on inspection the front and lower frame mounts had fallen and car has been parked every since because I can not find parts that are resonibly priced! I was on the interstate doing 70 mph 10 mins prior to the last incident could have been a bad result. Have read about these problems in a forum someone started on google, cant believe there was never a recall!.

20 Steering problem of the 1994 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 01/28/2014

While merging onto i95 north my car shut completely off in the middle of moving traffic. I didn't even realize it was off until my little girl asked me to turn the radio back and my speed begin to decrease. It's very difficult to steer such a huge tank like my Lesabre when the power steering gives. It cranks right up after shutting off as if nothing is even wrong, but this has happened always in stop and go traffic. It bothers me because my car is all I have and it's the only transportation that I have for traveling with my little girl.

21 Steering problem of the 2000 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

Engine shuts off while driving, so far, only at lower speeds. Sometimes, by putting in neutral and turning key, engine starts again. Other times, it has to set for a while. Put new battery in 11/7/2013. Problem persisted. Three auto repair shops, including a Buick dealership, have checked it out, but it does not die on them in the amount of time its in their possession so I was told there was nothing they could do. Typically, it happens after it is driven at least 20 miles. Came very close to being rear-ended as I was unable to pull off the road enough to be out of the way on a road with hills and blind spots.

22 Steering problem of the 2001 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 09/18/2013

Hankook optimo h727 tires were installed all the way around in mid 2012. After about 15,000 miles, the car began to wobble/vibrate noticeably at speeds over about 45 mph. Tires had been regularly rotated, and that has been done on a regular basis since the wobble began. At the last rotation, the mechanic advised that the tires were "chopping" and that was causing the vibration/wobble.

23 Steering problem of the 2002 Buick Lesabre

24 Steering problem of the 2000 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

While driving this vehicle the bolts on my rear brake pad broke in half and the car was unable to move forward, had to drive my car backwards home luckily I was only a block away from home. The 2 front windows will not roll up or down, keep having to replace the hose that leads to my radiator, when I make right turns the car vibrates, two front seat belts have stop locking all together and this vehicle has never been in any sort of crash or accident, front dash is starting to lift considerably. I adore my vehicle and I'm not looking forward to getting rid of it, but there are too many problems to deal with on this car.

25 Steering problem of the 1995 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 07/27/2011

While leaving an intersection I was traveling down a slight hill , I heard a strange sound and realized I had no steering the wheel was turning ,but with no control of the car . The car hit a telephone pole that was installed to hold up 4 mailboxes . The engine carriage of the car that is bolted to the frame separated from the frame past the bolts causing the steering connection to come apart , the car is totaled . Thank you gm/ Buick engineers .

26 Steering problem of the 2000 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

This car began to show signs of front end wobble a few months ago. This means it feels like the wheels shake from side to side mostly when accelerating from 30 to 45 mph. I took it to the dealer about a month ago but he said he only felt it one time while driving it several blocks around the dealership neighborhood. I took it to firestone immediately after I left the dealership and they balanced the bridgestone tires and the wobble seemed to be lessened. I then took it home and replaced the rear rotors and brake pads as they seems to vibrate when we put the parking brake on while driving. This seemed to help smooth it out at the time. This is my wife's car so she drives it and in less than a month she said it is wobbling again. I drove it again tonight and it is much worse than before so I believe there is something seriously wrong with this suspension. This car has been under a warranty from warranty warehouse for the past seven years and we have had some repairs made at the dealer and each time we ask them to check the front end as it made grinding noises and never seemed to handle as it should. Each time the dealer said it was ok. This appears to be a problem with many reports on the internet regarding front end issues with Buick Lesabres. We also had the drivers side seat repaired under warranty and it has not worked properly since it was repaired. We have had it back for this issue at least three times. ## VIN passed ## Buick Lesabre limited 2000 ## updated 10/4/11 updated 10/31/11.

29 Steering problem of the 1996 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 09/05/2008

The grommets and/or washers that hold up the engine frame cradle rusted out and allowed this part to drop through the retaining bolts, once this happened there was a total loss of steering. Had I been driving on the interstate or 60 mph on a state highway this would have turned into a very serious accident. I was sitting at a stoplight and the moment I accelerated I heard a very loud metallic thud/sound, which I assume was the cradle dropping down. I'm amazed that this all happened with zero warning that they were any issues with the steering. There was never any indication that this was going to happen, meaning no looseness, no vibration, no sensory changes in how the steering felt but all in a matter of 2 seconds, a loud noise and then I couldn't steer or guide the car. I hit the brakes because I was trying to turn right and the car was moving left so I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting oncoming traffic. I live in the midwest and I believe that the corrosion was advanced due to all the salt that is placed on the roads to melt the ice/snow during the winter months. I'm writing this in hope that others will be notified and possibly have the condition of their cradles checked out to avoid losing their steering.

32 Steering problem of the 2005 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 07/15/2005

I own a 2005 Buick Lesabre. While driving 60 mph or greater, the front wheels, steering wheel and the floor boards shake and vibrate. Took to dealer at 415 miles and they said to return when car had 500 miles. At 1292 miles dear replaced steering shaft. The dealer replaced tires. ; however, the failure continued to occur. Took back car again then went to another dealer. They said one of the tires had a nail. I replaced all four tires ( not from dealer) hoping problem would go away and it did not. I took the vehicle to back to 2nd dealer and they stated that the vehicle had to be forced balanced and have wheel alignment. The dealer made the repair ($400. 00); however, the failure continued to occur. As of may28, 2005 the dealer had not repaired the vehicle and said it was an inherent problem. The current mileage was 11,081 and failure started from time car was purchased.

33 Steering problem of the 2004 Buick Lesabre

Failure Date: 07/31/2004

The car feels very unstable, it wobbles and wanders at speeds over 40 mph. It is made worse with winds over 10 mph, going down hill, on an uneven surface, when a truck is passing and a speeds around 60-65 mph. If all these symptoms come together the car is very very unstable. The feeling is very similar to going over a grooved road surface.
