Steering Rack And Pinion Problems of Buick Lesabre

The contact owns a 2000 Buick Lesabre. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the rack and pinion bracket detached from the frame and the contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken for diagnosis where the contact was advised of the rack and pinion failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 125,000.

When parking bolts shredded off the front rack and pinion. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

While driving steering wheel locked up due to the rack and pinion failure. Consumer had vehicle towed. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. First faikure occurred when consumer was driving at 35 mph, vehicle has 12,409 miles on it. Second failure occurred when consumer was driving at 70 mph, vehicle has 17,067 miles on it.

During normal operation of vehicle while traveling at any speed steering column assumes a different center position approximately 90% of the time, dealership examined vehicle and determined that one of the steering mounting bolts was loose, and another mounting bolt was twisted out of position, dealer replaced the bolt, and corrected the problem. Consumer stated the rack & pinion bolt was completely broken.

Had taken vehicle in for routine maintenance at independent mechanic. Was informed that a bolt to rack and pinion steering had broken , and bushings had worn out. Bolt nut was sitting there, looked like it was welded.

Attaching bolt (drivers side) holding the power steering rack and pinion to the cradle broke, allowing the rackand pinion steering to shift in the right side mouning bracket. Bolt showed no stretching or shear force causing it to fail. Bolt hardened to 10. 9 (on head of bolt) bolt is unavailible until middle of may due to number changes. (tells me something is wrong somewhere ! ).

The rack and pinion assembly failed making it hard to make a left turn. Nlm.

The rack and pinion was leaking at the end seals. Nlm.

Steering is uncontrolled and causes the vehicle to float from right to left, dealer replaced the rack and pinion which improved the problem a little bit, however the problem still persists, possibly a suspension or steering problem.

The consumer stated that the vehicle was misaligned. The dealer could not find anything wrong with this vehicle but the consumer believes the rack and pinion could be the possible cause.

Owner was hearing a rattling noise about 3-4 months ago coming from vehicle. The noise was heard mostly on short sharp bumps. While having the oil changed the problem was found to be with the rack and pinion steering. Rack and pinion steering was loose and could have fallen off. The entire unit was replaced by the dealership under warranty.

When turning left at low speeds steering wheel was very hard to turn. Dealer stated rack and pinion needed to be replaced.
