The running lights would not turn off. I was in harms way in the rain and had to take the care 70 more miles, while I could get out of the buffalo area to a safe location for the night. The lights never went off till the battery was exhausted. When recharged the headlights remained on again, unable to be turned off. When I managed to exchange a relay, the next problem occurred, the parking lights would not turn off. I did research and learned that this is a common manufacturing problem that NHTSA has directed to be fixed without cost, due to it being a safety issue that the gm lines have not adjusted and still offer on several vehicles. I contacted the local valley Cadillac who declined to fix the problem. I contacted the Cadillac customer service. I also declined to fix without charge. She wants to charge a diagnostic fee instead of making the permanent correction of exchanging the correct the device, properly once and for all. I told her I would contact NHTSA. I also asked her to send a message to Cadillac/ gm's legal and I am informing my lawyer that if I should die, operating this vehicle, that I my children should file a wrongful death lawsuit against all involved. This problem could not be diagnosed a couple of months earlier, friendly fred's in erwin, NY could not find the problem because it corrected itself, until this past Monday, 4-30-12. I do not know the exact date of the last occurrence but I also had a oil change which I think is the late fall of 2011. I am a disabled person who can't be exposed to the elements for very long. Since you, NHTSA has already called for all of these systems to be replaced, I want NHTSA to prompt and provoke gm's Cadillac to make the repair. I work in the rochester and buffalo areas as there is no work in corning area. I can't afford to replace this car which is vital for my survival. . . Updated 05/09/12

The car keeps on over heating, the oil light keeps on coming on because of the over heating and also the car does not always want to start I have to jump it off alot. It is not the battery because I have gotten it checked plenty of time. But when I jump it off the wires get really hot and start to melt so I take them off. Also the dashboard light don't work very well I have to bang on the dash board for them to even barley come on at night. . There need to be big time recalls on this car!!!.

Problem began in November. While driving experienced a full system failure. The car would slowly slow down, dashboard panel would illuminate, and then the vehicle would shut off. Both through the engine and electronically. Took vehicle to dealer, who did system checking. Diagnosed a need for a new battery and engine flush. Battery was replaced and engine flushed. After this repair, 5 miles down the road while traveling 60 mph ,the same thing occurred. Back to dealer, who was shocked and unable to determine, but noted a crank shaft and a cam sensor that needed to be replaced. Had them replaced. Left dealership and again same thing. Called Cadillac and filed complaint. Back to dealership, this time catalytic convertor. Failed. Afterwards, this again happened. Took back to dealer ,had no remedy. Had to buy another car because this car was inoperable.
I have had so many problems with this car and they just keep piling up. I just replaced the head gasket and valve cover gaskets a month ago and now my oil pressure is failing. My service writter tells me this car is notorius for problems with the engine, specifically the way it handles oil and cooling. I sent a letter to Cadillac when I had probles a month ago but have heard nothing. Is there anything I can do?.

Numerous issues with 1998 Catera. Had timing belt tensioner-pulleys/cam drive replaced last year(3-2002) while under warranty. "service campaign" was issued by Cadillac in sept 2002 for Catera's to have came drive idler/tensioner pulley/water pump replaced with new version. Got vehicle serviced today and was informed that car had another serious problem that needed to be corrected-out of pocket-coolant crossover leaking into oil cooler, and valve cover was leaking oil. . . . . The car runs extremely hot, has poor performance, gets terrible gas millage, battery has low voltage when nothing is left on by mistake, replaced the battery 4 time in two years, a/c had new compressor replaced past summer 2002 still not able to cool car and while in use the car sounds like a tractor, boggs down the perfromance. Had to have entire brake system replaced (cost over 800. 00) at 34,000, purchased 4 sets of michellan mxv4 tires in last 2 years-inside tread seperation on front tires caused blow out twice.
Battery was replaced six times by the dealer, and problem still reoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information.

Whenever vehicle is parked overnight it would fail to restart again. Would have tow vehicle to dealer each time this happened, 8 times so far. Mechanic would reprogram key; replaced battery/faulty fuel injectors and the temperature gauge. GMC epurchased this vehicle in October, 1999 for the full purchase price less $400. Oo.
This is a seriously unsafe vehicle . No safety defect (s) mentioned in summary.
Battery replacement 2 months after purchase; tensioner pulley disintegrated; fog lights have been replaced twice.
The consumer says that she is on her third battery, and the three year lease does not expire until March 2003.
