I have had problem with my 2000 Catera every since I bough it, first the seat would not heat ,put the key in and it would not turn, tires wore out in less than a year, driver side door is coming a part, glove compartment lock broken ,belt broke car ran hot had to get a new radiator, check engine light on ,secondary air injection hose failures, this car has been in the shop more times than out, junk, and g m does nothing to help, water pump went out ,heater coil hose leaking, vaule cover gasket replace , all before 60,000 miles.
Speedometer and gas hand both work intermittently. . I was told by the bradshaw dealership that it is a known problem with Catera's. . . If this is the case then, I think the repairs should have been a part of the large recall on the automobile.
While listening to the radio or cd player. . When changing from source to source (cd to radio or radio to cd) levels (bass and treble reset to normal). . . . When adjusting mirror settings, controls do not work and mirrors rotate all the way to the home position and have to moved manually.
My engine light came on and dealer can't seem to resolve it. They have replaced the fuel tank, fuel filter, bg44k, module, and the car's computer system. To no avail. I now have a "check engine" light and "gas cap" light on.
Where do I even start with the 1999 Catera that I just had to trade in this weekend due to so many things that had went wrong with that car. 1st, when filling the car up with gas, it would not automatically shut off. Dealer fixed 1st time, but messed up the gas gauge. It started doing it again 1 month later. You could not keep a set of tires on the car no matter how many alignments that you had performed. The sunroof would not open most of the time when you tried to open it, but it would open on it's own at random. Dealer replaced the switch twice, problem still occurred. The transmission went out at 60k and had to be replaced due to the *s* light flashing. The first radio would not pick up any stations, the radio was replaced by the dealer. 4k later after warranty expired, it happened again. At 65k, the cd player would no longer work. The locks would not completely lock with the remote or when the car was put into gear. At 90k, the drivers side heated seat literally caught fire while driving and burned a 4" diameter hole in front bolster. Gm stated that this is "normal wear and tear, but normally, they just stop functioning. They would not pay for the repairs of the seat at all. Almost caused me to wreck the car as the acbin quickly filled with smoke and as soon as I cracked the window, the fire started to get larger as it got more air to feed it. The check engine light showed cylinder misfires and I was told that it would be $2500 to $5000 to repair it. I traded the car on 6/11/05 for a new 2005 chevy silverado extended cab. I hope that gm reads this and calls me at the number I provided so I can provide more detailed info on this. I was literally screwed on this car. It was a lemon from the start and no one seemed to care!.
Cadillac cater 1998 experienced multiple failure that caused engine damage. The trunk light bulbs failed. The trunk light bar failed. The key fob failed. The cd player failed. The window washer hose failed. The switch for heating and cooling system had to be replaced. The bottom gear of the crankshaft broke causing engine damage. The front and rear end had to be aligned due to the vehicle pulling to the right. The center link was also replaced.

Engine light comes on while driving, stop light goes off, if I drive about 10 miles it comes back on. Dealer has tried numerous corrections. None worked.
I purchased a 1997 Cadillac Catera on Jan 31, 2001 from united automax in memphis, TN. From the date of purchase I have had extensive problems with this car. Beginning with electrical problems with the lights. Since then I have had problems with tires wearing out prematurely, heater core replaced, rotors replaced and wearing out again within a year's time. Fuses have blown, radiator fan along with other problems. Numerous recalls and etc. On April 14, 2003 I took my car to bud davis Cadillac in memphis and reported that I could smell oil burning. They stated that I needed valve covers resealed and to replace rear main seal. (the work was done thru my extended warranty company). I returned to the dealer and told them about noise coming from the right front end. They in return replaced right and left lower control arm. When I went to pick up the car from dealer I noticed that the noise still existed and informed service agent before I left the dealer's lot. They informed me that it was a bad strut link to which my extended warranty did not cover. After discussing the matter with another machanic (not dealer), he stated that the name of the part was a stabilizer not strut. And not only did the noise exist in the front end, but there was a hissing sound coming from under the hood and that the oil light began to come on and stay on. The mechanic suggested that the hissing noise came from a part that was probably damaged by bud davis Cadillac when repairing valves and seals. I then returned to the dealer. I informed the dealer that my warranty company did cover the stabilizer linkage and they stated that the service agent used the wrong terminology. They agreed to fix it and did, but refused to check the source of the hissing sound without me paying for it. It seems that each week or month there are extensive repairs needed.

Vehicle had electrical/ acceleration problems. Accelerator pedal needed to be replaced.
Electrical system malfunctioned.
Intermittently while slowing down, the vehicle stalled without warning. The dealership was unable to locate an error code. The dealership wanted the consumer to inform them when the vehicle cut off again. They wanted him/her to leave it wherever it broke down so they could get and resolve the "error code". Once the vehicle was started, the code was deleted.
Windshield wipers only worked on the fast setting, and failed to disengage unless the vehicle was completely turned off. Windshield wiper motor was replaced, however the problem continued. . The consumer believed the probelm was electrical.
Vehicle has had excessive failure of the electrical system continually, radio, sunroof, headlight system, dashboard lights, heating and air conditioning would experience problems.
