2006 Cadillac Cts rear differential failure during morning commute failed in heavy traffic and slippery conditions with no prior warning. There was an immediate loss of forward motion and vehicle control. I was able to regain control and continue directly to the dealer and left the car. The car is current at the dealer awaiting parts.

7 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2007

Rear differential whine and leakage - 2006 model, build date Nov 2005. The car is used for freeway commuting only (300 miles/day) and has never been driven hard. The differential has whined since delivery with 78 miles on the car. The differential fluid was changed at 2847 miles with redline 75w-90 synthetic fluid and gm 1052358 additive, and significant metal powder was removed from the magnetic drain plug at the time of change. On April 16, at a little over two months and 8413 miles, I took the car back to the selling dealership for repair, as the differential had begun leaking about April 10 and ~7200 miles. The service manager, wyman adcock, drove the car and reported that while he could 'hear a slight whine', he thought that it was normal and I should continue to drive it to see if it gets worse. I pointed out to him that gm has had problems with the differential on this car since it's introduction and that another Cadillac dealer told me that they had replaced so many differentials in these cars that they now keep one in stock. The service manager told me that he had never heard of a problem with these cars. I suggested that I should take it another dealership, and left.

8 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

I bought the car new, I have had a loud bang in the rear end when the automatic transmission changes gears. I have been into the dealer numerous times with the same complaint but they never corrected it or even explained it. There was a recall on the pinion seal that they did replace but it did not help the bang in the rear end. Recently, I have been told it is a problem with the differential and bushings which are completely worn out and that the differential can shift and cause additional damage. I went back into the dealer who sent 78 pages of repair and complaint history of this car to general motors, who basically said if I would have contacted them while it was under warranty they might take steps with the repair. Well I did contact them during the earlier years so I do not understand why they are not taking responsibility for the defect today.

9 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2006

New (4 month old) Cts would not accelerate when I attempted to pass another car, Cts seemed to slow down. The car backfired and blew white smoke. The rear of the car made a loud noise as if grinding and loud rumbles. Computer did not did not detect malfunction. Dealer determined rear end differential unit malfunction.

10 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2006

: the contact stated while driving 70 mph on the interstate, both rear wheels locked without warning resulting in a loss of vehicle control. The contact managed to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road without incident, but all the instrument cluster panel lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who determined the rear differential needed to be replaced. After the differential unit replacement, the problem persisted. The manufacturer was not alerted.

11 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2006

1. Was driving my black 2006 Cts v with 1,486 miles on it home from getting food when it stopped working. I turned the car off and tried to make it go. It wouldn't go. Had the car towed to crestview Cadillac. 2. The dealer said that my rear differential failed. They claim that I must have been drag racing the car which I have never done even once. They claim to have found traction compound and they are telling me that my tires are near bald. 3. Dealer would not warranty the car. They had to replace the rear differential and the right axle.
