My vehicle started to feel as if the steering was a little loose a few months ago, at one point I thought I had a flat tire, but I brought the car to a tire shop and they verified my tires were fine and they could not see any visible problems or leaks. About a week later I was driving down highway 610 and I temporarily lost control of the vehicle when trying to switch lanes, and almost side swiped a truck. The loss of control was only during the turn of the steering wheel, I gained control when I straightened the steering wheel and continued on home. On October 13, 2012 I got into my car and put the car in reverse, and the vehicle's steering was even more loose. I turned the steering wheel to the right and the front end made a clunk sound and the entire vehicle shifted upwards when I proceeded to turn the wheel. A mechanic verified that a missing bolt damaged the mounting strap, which also damaged the rack and pinion.

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Cadillac Seville. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph the steering wheel became loose. The contact parked the vehicle and allowed it to sit overnight. The following day, the contact attempted to reverse from her driveway when she heard a loud, abnormal noise. The contact drove the vehicle to a mechanic where they advised her that the there was a bolt missing that was causing the rack and pinion to bend. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recall. The failure mileage was 165,000. Kmj.

Two (2) gm oem rack and pinion replacements required within an 18 month time frame due to part failures. Steering wheel became unresponsive on interstate resulting in a near crash.
While driving and going around corners the steering veers to one side or another suddenly. There is also strange noises coming from the front end when going over bumps. If this happens at a high speed I may not be able to control it and something serious could happen. This seems related to other 1997 gm rack and pinion failures that I have researched. Will have the rack and pinion replaced.
Steering is very difficult when trying to get in and out of tight spots. It feels almost as if I loose my steering all together. The car dealer said they replaced the steering rack just last month, but there is no difference.

Car would not steer to the left steering locked up on my wife after steering wheel was turn to the right. Had to have car towed home. Can not drive it.
In my 1997 Cadillac sts the steering gear went bad. During a left turn it will intermittently become harder to complete a left turn. Turning right is fine. Over 800000 gm cars were recalled in 1997 for this same problem however Cadillac is not one of them. When I contacted gm they told me that there was nothing they could do. When in a vehicle I feel it is important to be able to predict the resistance of the steering wheel as it may pertain to my and others future safety.
Loss of steering control while driving. Vehicle towed to dealer who informed consumer that the cause was rack and pinion failure. Repairs made, but problem is still recurring. The replacement part that was mailed to mechanic arrived broken. Six months later, same problem occurred, awaiting response from gm/Cadillac about reimbursement.
When turning left the power steering is not working but works to the right. Then it seems to work alright a few times then quit again when turning left. It is so hard to turn that I have parked the car.
While driving the rack and pinion broke. Vehicle was hit prior to this at the front finder on the driver's side. The dealer has repaired the vehicle.
