Equipment Problems of Cadillac XT5 - part 1

I had to replace the thermostat which is a well known, documented defect/issue for this vehicle/Cadillac. I would like reimbursement from Cadillac.

The radiator had a leak that required replacement in my 2020 Cadillac Xt5. The car only had 30,000 miles. Because of that gm replaced the radiator for $600 instead of the standard cost of $2,000. This is the 3rd Cadillac of my relatives of similar age that had a radiator leak. The service manager admitted they are replacing at least 7 of these every week. In my opinion this is a manufacturing defect and should be replaced at no cost instead of a negotiated lower price. My concern is that gm is repairing these vehicles with the same parts that have failed so many times. It will likely happen again in less that 5 years. A second issue is the transmission was shuddering during acceleration. Gm replaced the torque converter under warranty. But I have read this is also a common problem with gm cars for several years. I think gm should have to come up with a solution and contact owners for a recall.

On 1/13/2026 while driving on the 91 freeway near long beach California we heard a load pop sound and then felt some air and outside notice in the car . Pulled over shortly and saw a large hole in the rear sun window with cracked glass everywhere. . Made an appointment at penske Cadillac and a few days later they are checking to see if it’s covered under warranty. Also filled a claim with aaa . There was absolutely no rock or debris involved.

The vechice transmission jerks when starts to move. Sqeaking noise in the cv joints boots, the shifts gears module stays in sports mode, will not stay on in regular mode. Defective sensors to send signal to onstar alarm theft .

9/17/25 I purchased 2017 Cadillac Xt5 platinum from a dealership. It came with a dash mat which was concealing cosmetic damage to vinyl around air bag on passenger side, and was unglued throughout entire dashboard. I didn't have a vehicle inspection before buying car, nothing reported on carfax. And I asked dealership why they used velcro and dashmat to conceal damage. No response.

When braking — both at low speeds and when slowing from highway speeds (40+ mph) — vehicle feels like engine revs and is still pushing against the brakes. Requires very firm pedal pressure to hold car in place; if brake pressure is eased, vehicle surges forward until it finally settles after several seconds. Concern is intermittent but repeatable. I had a near collision on 10/3/2025 due to this issue. I have been in constant contact with the dealership on this, including the service manager, as well as Cadillac care. The dealership has test driven the vehicle several times and has been unable to replicate the problem. However, I do have an audio recording of the engine’s idle speed at various points during one incident.

Car exhaust was making vibration sound brought into dealership and the muffler is broke on the inside. Cadillac repair said it’s not a common occurrence and was not covered under any warranty. Stated it could have broke on the inside due to vibrations. The muffler shouldn’t have just broke inside due to vibrations if the integrity of it has to of been compromised especially if the car isn’t that old and there’s no damage.

Cadillac Xt5 had a “steering assist is reduced” message on the driver information center. P0128 code.

Message on dashboard "steering assistance reduced drive with caution". Messages appeared April 2025 and July 2025. Previously electric module needed to be replaced. Steering message caused me to be very cautious. Radiator had to be replaced because of leak. Both issues repaired at dealership. Vehicle has less than 40,000 miles.

Auto shut down completely in the middle of the road. No one including tow truck driver could not put vehicle into neutral. Once the vehicle was towed to the dealership in was confirmed that battery just died and the dealership stated due to the electrical shifter there was no way to engage neutral since the vehicle could not start. This situation caused major traffic issues for 3 hours as vehicle was locked in position. I would think there should be some way to push the vehicle to the curb allowing traffic to flow. Being stuck in the middle of traffic and unable to push vehicle to the side of the road is very dangerous. Please advise Cadillac that people must have a way to get there vehicle out of the middle of the road and this a very dangerous situation.

Steering reduced assist drive with care on the dash board . It states drive with caution not sure if this is dangerous or even driveable I am 8 months pregnant and now I don’t have a car I am scared to drive it. Thermostat stopped working & fan is running and won’t stop.

My 2018 Cadillac Xt5 has a serious water intrusion issue—water is leaking into the interior cabin through the sunroof or roof seams. This appears to be the result of a known manufacturer defect covered in gm’s technical service bulletin TSB 19-na-167. The leak has caused significant water accumulation on the floor, raising concerns about mold, electrical failure, and corrosion. I brought the vehicle to a Cadillac dealership, and they confirmed the issue. The total repair estimate is around $7,900. Cadillac offered partial goodwill coverage, but I am still being required to pay $3,400 plus tax out of pocket. I have authorized the repairs but am seeking reimbursement for the portion Cadillac is not covering, as this is not normal wear and tear—it is a clear defect in manufacturing that poses safety and health risks. Gm should be fully covering this issue for affected vehicles.

I purchased the 2023 Cadillac, with 19800 miles a week ago. The back up camera grid lines are so faint that most of the time they aren't visible. There is no contrast adjustment to make them visible. This condition is definitely a safety issue for me. As a [xxx] I depend on those grid lines to safely back into parking spots or my garage. [xxx] our 2022 Cadillac Xt5 400 shudders when driving. It happens at any speed. The technician thought it was the v6 changing over to run on 4 cylinders. Rearview camera has perfect image when I put in reverse inside my garage but as soom as I exit the garage into sunlight, the image on the screen goes so dark you don't have a rear view for 18 to 20 seconds and by that time I am in the street. The dealer and Cadillac say this is normal. I have owned may gm vehicles and know this is not correct and dangerous.

The cameras just stopped working, when I went to put the car in reverse, blank screen comes on.

I keep getting steering assistance is reduced drive with care” message. I got it scanned a couple of times through mechanic shop, code comes up with a thermostat cooling issue. I have paid 2 shops to run a cooling pressure test and all come up negative. How can a steering issue error lead to a cooling issue. Took it to the dealership, probably wiped the error, stopped for a month before came back. Love the vehicle but this is pissing me off.

My 2017 Xt5 has a joy stick issue that at times has trouble going into gear. Service transmission warning comes on then unable to shift soon and then check engine light. Cadillac replace the modular for the shifter in August 2024 now months later mid November they say the shifter has to be replaced approximately November 4 to November 18. The service transmission warning comes on. And then unable to shift soon and check the engine light comes on. Short drives the check engine light goes off itself, unable to shift and check engine light was 1175. 00 $ for the modular August 13 and now they say the shift has replaced cost of, approximately $700. So now they’re doing double labor to replace the shifter. My replacing the shifter it will send signals not to have the check engine light come on. Has this ever been a problem reported in the past. First it was adaptive shifting three days after having it, then it was the thermostat, now it’s needing a new right rear hub assembly but my main concern is the shuttering when I am accelerating. The ride is not smooth. There is a chatter happening when I drive it. It makes me very nervous. I have went to one mechanic to diagnose so far and he said to have the transmission flushed first but it may need the torque converter replaced.

Ecm- engine system. Diagnostic code p26c8. Chassis control module requested malfunction indicator lamp illumination. The dtc is an informational dtc. The dtc indicates an emission related dtc set in the chassis control module. My service transmission message came on and would not let me go into reverse or drive. The next day the check engine light was on. This vehicle is only 34,650 miles and is a 2017. I bought it on Saturday and this happened on Wednesday!.

A/c stopped working. Steering assist is reduced warning light came on. Was told it was a thermostat/ sensor. Had the sensor replaced for a cost of approximately $230. 00. Short while later, a/c stopped working again. Suddenly the steering wheel malfunctioned while driving on the interstate. Ran off the the road into median and heard a loud "pop" sound as I tried to gain control of the vehicle. Hit an embankment and almost crossed over median into oncoming traffic. All airbags deployed. My passenger and I suffered injuries including broken bones, fractured ribs, severe back and shoulder pain, bleeding forearm, bruises and swelling. We were transported to a nearby er by ambulance. The vehicle was totaled.

My car is it lifts up and down it goes up and down and it looks like it changes in model like it gets wider or something but underneath my feet when I'm driving there's something that feels like it's coming out towards my feet like an air and it blows and it burns it's even shocked me a few times and when I push the gas pedal and makes my foot hurt like this stinging really bad and underneath the steering wheel it looks like something either got pulled out or something's trying to get in I'm really scared and I need someone to look at my car my dad he makes up excuses and stuff it kind of feels like it's not the car that I purchased like it's been switched.

The driving mode don't stay in the correct control for example the SUV has three components tour, sports, snow and ice. . . While driving in tour mode the vehicle goes to sports on it owns. The electrical dash board cuts off and resets its self while in driving. Scary.

Vehicle completely shut off while crossing over a four lane highway to enter a shopping center. Safety could have been highly at risk to both passenger, on coming traffic side, and driver. Luckily the cars coming were far enough back that they were able to stop. I took my vehicle to the dealership where I bought the car brand new in 2018. They test drove the vehicle while hooked to a computer but could not find a problem. They tightened all connections to battery and other components and did updates to the computer on the vehicle. There was no warnings whatsoever that the vehicle was about to completely shut off. Previous to this incident I had been driving on 95s from warrenton vs to clayton nc. I don't even like to think of what would have happened on 95 if my vehicle would have completely shut down. I am sure I probably would not be writing this report. Looking on the web this has happened to others with this same year and model of Cadillac.

After exiting a car wash (automated)on Monday-7/3/23, I was attempting to stop my vehicle so I could dry the exterior with towels. I was on the car wash property and as I approached an area that was open, I attempted to stop the vehicle, the engine revved very high and the vehicle took off at a very high speed in fractions of a second. The vehicle then climbed over a flower embankment and hit the wall of the car wash. The impact was so great that it put a large hole in the wall and ruptured a main water line creating a huge water leak. The fire department and police officer arrived at the scene to make a report. My initial thought was that my sandal may have got trapped but after returning home and rethinking the entire incident may times I believe this was “unintentional acceleration “ the driver side airbag and knee airbag were deployed. Thankfully I was not hurt. Had this happened when I was on a road or a grocery store/ mall parking lot things could have been very serious. I have insurance through state farm and have requested them numerous times to have a diagnostic check done to identify the reason for this to happen and they have declined my request. Please let me know what the next steps are.

Per the owners manual, the vehicle is supposed to be equipped with four reinforced jacking points for the vehicle supplied jack. The two front reinforced points were never installed. Besides, there being no way to jack up the vehicle, it some one unknowingly attempt to jack up the car, it could fall off the jack and injure or kill someone. I went to the dealer, and upon inspection they agreed that the points were missing. I contacted gm, but after one call, no one responded back to me.

While driving my Cadillac Xt5 on the busy highway during the early afternoon, without warning the sunroof glass made a loud pop sound immediately followed by shattered glass. Glass fell all over the driver’s head and body impairing my vision and causing me to make sudden stop on the shoulder of the highway. There is problem with the sunroof breaking and shattering glass while driving. Insurance claim filed and private auto glass dealer made repairs in excess of $1300. Shards of glass still remain in the sunroof screen closure until taken to auto detailed for removal at an additional cost to me, the registered owner. I dive in fear that this may occur again without warning which could pose extreme danger or accident.

Front half of sunroof exploded while driving. Hard top. Was closed but if it wasn’t glass would’ve fallen directly on myself and any passengers posing a safety risk. I could have been in an accident. Glass falling from the vehicle posed a safety concern for others on the road. I have had this car 1 month. When I called the dealer was told I would have to file an insurance claim. Currently awaiting repairs. Insurance claim has been filed.

The rear camera takes way too long to switch from night mode to day mode. When parked in the garage, there is not enough light so it goes to night mode. After raising the garage door and starting the car, the camera is in night mode. If the sun is bright, and the driver is wearing sunglasses, the rear camera image on the display is unreadable. After backing out of the garage it takes 15-20 seconds for the camera to switch to day mode. During this time, the area rear of the car is totally indiscernible, including the sidewalk that crosses my driveway. There should be a way for the driver to adjust this timing or even turn the night mode off completely. Even at night, the image is too dark.

The camera system has not been turning on intermittenly. Both the rear backup and the side/front cameras bring the screen to a black screen with a red triangle and red camera logo with a line through it (signifying no camera connected?). I have most commonly noticed it when I am parking in my garage at night, but it will work the next day, very hard to reproduce the conditions. .

The rear camera guidelines on my 2018 Xt5 lux don’t appear on the backup camera display when shifting into reverse. Happens around half the time. As soon as I shift into drive, the guidelines then appear. I can then shift back into reverse and the guidelines are there.

I was driving 70 mph near chattanooga, TN when I heard an explosion. The front panel(of 2) of my sunroof completely shattered. There were no cars within 1000 feet. There was no overpass I was driving under. Though I can't say for sure I am 99. 9% sure that there was no object that created this, rather the glass in the sunroof is defective. I have not had vehicle inspected. The manufacturer is not taking responsibility. There were no warning signs. Glass shattered all over me and my car. There were no injuries other than a cut finger. Thankfully no other passengers were in the car.

When I get on the freeway and go around 68 mph my vehicle starts shaking and I constantly get a stabilitrak message that flashes on and off. I have to hold the steering will tight because it swerves a little and had to start driving away from cars. I took it to get the wheels balanced and it still does the same thing. The mechanic from the dealer ship I purchased the vehicle from said he could not find anything wrong with it.

While driving my vehicle, the rear portion of the sunroof suddenly just exploded, with the glass completely shattering. It sounded like an explosion. There were no exterior causes for this. . . Just a release of pressure that was inherent in the window from manufacturing. There was no other damage to the vehicle. I was on a wooded part of the road, so nobody was around to throw an object, and there was no vehicle in front of me to kick up some sort of road debris.

I have had the vehicle, which is still under factory warranty, for 5 months. The vehicle began alarming on the first day I drove it (10/16/20). Monday, 10/19/20, the vehicle went into "park" while I was driving it. The dealership did a quick assessment and called back and told me the battery was the cause of the issue. My immediate questions were "why didn't the battery indicator appear?" and "why would a low battery cause the SUV to go into park while I was driving it?" however, as they were returning the SUV to me, the transmission light came on. The transmission electric control was replaced due to "an internal failure in shifter" that was undetectable. On 12/21/20, the same dealership replaced the water oulet because they found a leak "coming from between the thermostat housing and water outlet pipe". On 3/14/20, after driving the vehicle 175 miles at 75mph, the vehicle suddenly decelerated. The vehicle was not responding to me pressing on the gas pedal. No warning lights showed and no alarms sounded. Additionally, once the vehicle was stopped, it would not restart. Onstar ran a diagnostic report and no codes were found. The thermostat had a normal reading. The onstar representative recommended that I allow the vehicle time to cool and then restart the vehicle. I drove back home while making frequent stops to allow the vehicle time to cool off. On 3/15/20, I returned the vehicle to the dealership. On 3/22/20, the dealership notified me that they could not replicate the problem and did not find any problems during their diagnostic evaluation. They also did not test the vehicle by driving it either. I was told me to come pick up the vehicle without knowing the reason that the SUV cut off while driving it on the highway. The 2017 Cadillac Xt5 is unsafe and could result in an accident or death. Please investigate this vehicle.
