Chevrolet 1500 owners have reported 30 problems related to electrical system (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I pulled into driveway and put car in park, left engine running. Went to door of residence to get my kids. Kids went out to the car and were yelling fire! I seen the inside up in smoke. I reached inside to turn engine off. We then started pouring buckets of water into seat and on floor around the seat to try to prevent spread of the fire. I luckily put the fire out. Fire dept unhooked battery and removed melted plastic around seat. It seems a wire somehow shorted out beneath seat and caught the seat and floor on fire.

I was driving my truck to a friends house and all of a sudden my cages started going crazy they showed that my truck was overheating and when I stopped its wasn't overheating the the air conditioning started to get hot and then cold and stopped. Know none of the cages work. Two weeks again my wife and I went to breakfast and when I went to turn the ignition off it wouldn't turn off so I had to leave the vehicle running after breakfast we went home and I disconnected the cables and the truck turned off . Then the next morning I hooked them back up and it started by it self. I am a 77 year old senior and I cannot believe that this is happening . I would like help in trying to figure this all out it sounds like defects to me I have always owned silverado trucks and never has anything like this happened.

A month or two ago the heating system stayed blowing while in off position and even while the car was turned off, kept killing the battery so it had to be disconnected. Rear window will roll down at start up. Radio will squeal at start up and had to be turned on or off from the center console. This week the air bag light came on and check tire. Periodically the service stability light will blink on. Today the wipers will not turn off. Very worried that it will accelerate, catch fire or shut off while driving. We have an apt for repair on Monday. Is the electrical panel a category included int he recalls?.
My car has only 50,400 miles-its a 2009, yesterday while driving I felt a jolting in the rear end of the truck and it continued each time I stopped and started driving again. I took it to my mechanic who informed me it was a transmission shifting problem. I went on line and discovered that this issue has been related to other silverado trucks as a recall due to a shift cable adjuster problem which can lead to a roll away.

This is an ongoing problem for several years. My battery has side mounted terminals. Each time the temperature goes up or down the positive post becomes loose. Most times it is a problem as I start the vehicle. When I turn the key the engine begins to start, then it shuts down due to lack of electrical power. Twice in the past week it has shut down while traveling down the road, once in the middle of I-83, during rush hour in downtown harrisburg, PA. Over the last few years it has, on several occasions, "hiccupped" several times while I was driving. I have tightened the screw-in post down (twice) to the point where I have rounded the hex head off and the wrench jumped off the head but, it continues to come loose. I spoke with an auto parts store and they recommended an adhesive, which I tried. It still came loose. I have even changed out the battery but, still the problem exists. This was a very popular year for chevy w/t pick up trucks. I cannot imagine these problems have not been involved in recalls before now. The obvious fix is to replace the battery with one that has top mount posts. I would also have to replace the cables. Why should I have to pay that when this is obviously a design flaw?.

Vehicle was on cruise control prior to accident, I lost consciousness & do not remember anything about the crash early on. Was informed the vehicle rolled front to rear 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 times, prior to coming to rest on its top. The vehicle was a total loss due to this accident. I spent 3 days in icu and am now recuperating at home. No airbags deployed due to this accident . The vehicle was a total loss due to the accident.

Electrical dash board including speedometer and all gages and etc. , intermediately does not work. Sometimes the dashboard is not working, you'll never know when it comes back on working. It's getting worse. Is there a recall for the electrical dashboard?.
Speedometer on the instrument panel stopped working.
When I started the engine the gas gage went to full then back to 0. Later when I went to use the tow/haul it would not work, it wasn't long before the odometer and shift indicator stopped working.
When turning on the the air conditioner smoke came out of the vents. Changed actuator, it burns out immediately, air still does not work. Recall on this part/product and prince Chevrolet in valdosta, GA was unable to fix the problem. Keeps shorting out. Do not want my truck to catch fire. Still have no air!.
I have owned several chevy silverados and have had good experiences so far. I noticed back in 2013 that my fuel guage was not registering correctly - needle gone crazy. All the other gauges were perfect. The diagnosis was a bad fuel sensor and the entire dashboard cluster had to be replaced. (over $500) I just continue to reset my tripomiter when I fuel up now rather than spend that much money. The dealer said it was a common problem with dashboard concerns. Maybe some defective parts????? anyways, since then I have replaced the brakes, the front struts, the water pump, and recently the entire brake lines at $1200 due to severe corrosion. Still have not replaced the dashboard cluster as I am waiting for the next failure. My other trucks did not seem to fail as much as soon. May be looking at that new aluminum f150 soon.
Starting to merge onto the interstate near peoria, IL, I looked down and the speedometer was reading 95 mph. I looked at my gps and it read 54 mph. Without taking my eyes off the normal viewing scope, I now have no idea how fast I am going. This also seems to be a common issue with silverados.
Vehicle will suddenly decrease power and the message "engine power reduced" shows on message display. First time was 9/8/2012. Last time was Feb 24, 2015. Has done this at 25 mph on a city street, 35 mph city street twice, and 55 mph on highway. Supposedly repaired three times. Am afraid to use vehicle as usually tow 5th wheel and do not want it to do this while towing.
Bought my truck new in 2004 as my retirement vehicle. I have only 42,000 miles. I had my instrument cluster replaced two years ago under a dealer warranty due to a defective speedometer. Within the past week my transmission has randomly slipped from a dead stop as well as double clunked from a dead stop. Most recently, the ac is randomly blowing out hot air. I should have bought a golf cart instead. Since the truck is now 7+ years old it is no longer under warranty. I'm hoping the transmission does not completely shut down and leave me stranded while driving down the freeway on a hot summer day. Note: I was a victim of the us fidelis extended warranty scam.
My vehicle read 0 mph when I am driving at any speed. There are times it will shoot to 120 mph and others it will be in between regardless of my actually speed. Additionally, the gas gauge goes past full when I am near empty and vice versa. Sometimes the gas gause sticks in the middle so I never know exactly how much gas I have. This is a safety issue as I have been pulled over for going over the speed limit when my gauge told me I was doing the speed limit. Additionally, I have ran out of gas on a major highway because my gauge told me I was 3/4 full when I was on empty. I know after searching the internet that this problem was a special circumstance and vehicles who were less than 80k miles or got fixed prior to July 2011 then they were covered. However, nothing was done for the vehicles after that date. There are several others gm owners with trucks ranging from 2003-2007 with the same problem and we are being forced to have this problem fixed out of pocket for over $500. This is a major safety issue and all of the vehicles should have been recalled. I never received any notice on my car and was told by gm that the dealer didnt submit the new owner information despite me buying from a gm dealer. I am asking the NHTSA to enforce this saftey issue and recall these vehicles to be covered by gm no matter what the mileage is. . Read more...
The speedometer at times doesn't work or is way past 120mph when going any speed. When going 30 mph shows 80mph or the other way around. You never know how it will work.
For no apparent reason system just failed and for the cost of the vehicle that is terrible.
I have had nothing but trouble with rotted rotors, pads that don't wear right, brake lines that rotted and rusted away that they needed to be all replaced in July of 2006. A six year old motor vehicle should not have to have all the lines replaced. The bill was $1,200. Next a abs front wheel sensor recall was done at best chevy, hingham, mass. The abs lights came on and off at their own pace. I had new front bearings installed, had my mechanic check for codes. Nothing. The brakes just never felt right sometimes. I worked as a auto mechanic for nearly 25 years, never seen anything like this brake problem. By the way I took good care of my vehicle, gm must of used sub standard brake tubing, never seen anything so decayed after 6 years. On April 29, 2011 I was driving home and had stopped at a traffic light about 1/4 mile from my home. The light turned green, I accelerated up to about 30 mph and within a few hundred feet the abs light came on. Here we go again. As I neared the entrance to my street some 300 feet away , I took my foot of the gas and the truck began to slow. At about 200 feet I began to depress the brake pedal, it seemed ok but as I got nearer to the street I found myself needing to push down more and more. I was at 15 mph and ready to begin my turn and felt something was wrong. My left front tire had begun to lightly skid. The pedal went to the floor, was down at about 10 mph and before I could get my left foot onto the emergency brake and apply it, the left side front of truck struck a tree. The road is a private way and very narrow there. No air bag deployment, didn't damage the truck too much but it hit right on the tow hook and kinked the frame. I had my mechanic bring his analyzer to my home and it informed him that the control module had failed. I've spent good money after bad on those brakes and I demand the NHTSA do something.

Windshield wiper defect: windshield wipers fail to operate correctly, or at all, during adverse weather conditions. This equipment failure puts a driver and all passengers at risk of harm due to inhibited visibilty. Have had to suddenly change lanes on highway during heavy rain, pull off, stand on edge of door trim with traffic driving by, and push the wipers manually up and down to get them working again. Sometimes I will have to open the hood of the truck, push the fuse tight, push the wipers to start them, and then go. Our 1996 chevy suburban was recalled due to a windshield wiper defect, they have worked fine since the windshield wiper component was replaced. . I have contacted our local chevy dealership twice to have the windshield wiper defect repaired on the 1997 c1500 truck. Since the previous owner did not do it while it was under warranty, and the VIN number on the truck does not fall under the recall ( the service manager pulled up the recall and checked the VIN number of our truck against the numbers on their list on 08/06/2011 at 12:20 p. M. ), they will not replace it. This is because, as it is now not under warranty, they would not be reimbursed by gm, regardless of my reminding them that not replacing it remains a safety risk to the owner of the vehicle. This has began in 2001. Since our son is going to get his license, and would like to have the truck, I would like to ensure his vehicle is a safe one. If I had known where to file a complaint regarding this matter, I would have done this 8 years ago. The dealer told me there was nothing they could do, except replace the part.

After filling up my truck and got speed up to about 65mph my gas gauge went to empty and then would come back up after hitting a bump in the road or rocking the truck back and forth , also the light on the gear shift lever kept going out and couldn't tell what gear I was in, could peck on console and light might come back on but stays off most of the time now. Now the fuel gauge still acts up and it does not give and accurate reading. Have to set my trip timer each time I fillup so I will know how much gas I have unless someone steals a lot of it then I usually run out of gas along side the road. A few months ago 2 of the seat belts on the middle row seats of my vehicle became stuck so they are unable to be pulled out long enough to reach to be clipped in. Around 2010 several of the gauge needles on the instrument panel of my 2004 chevy tahoe started to stop working. From 2010 till 2015 I tried to take to a dealership 2 times to get it look at but by the time I took it into the dealership it would start working again so I was advise to bring it in when it was not working. A couple months ago when having the same issue I decided to take it to a local shop where I have paid $300 to try to get it fix, however the electrician found a report in regards to my car's problem and advise me to take my vehicle to a dealership to seek repairs at no cost. I then took it to ron tonkin Chevrolet on 8/10/2015 located at 122nd Ave and was told that no recalls were found for this issue just a notice and advised me to contact gm to seek cost assistance. On 8/11/2015 I called gm at (800)630-2438 and talked to a rep, then a senior advisor and was told that my request was denied and so I requested to talk to someone above the senior advisor. I was told that I will get a call in the next 24-48 hrs but since I didn't get a call I called them back on 8/17/2014 and was told by a supervisor that my request is denied because the Smart care coverage ended in 2011 and I should had follow the instructions on the notice sent to vehicle owner before 2011 to get my instrument panel gauges and seat belts repair. I explained them that I did not received that notice but they claimed that it was sent to me and for that reason nothing else they can do. I consider that this should be a safety matter and that gm should be responsible to cover the cost for the repairs.
Turn on the radio, which is in a navigation system. Crackling sounds begin to be heard through the bose speakers after a few minutes and continue even after radio is turned off. Sound does not stop until key is in the off position and I exit the vehicle. The problem started infrequently, but now occurs every time I turn on the radio or navigation system. I took it to the dealer while it was still under warranty, but they stated no "codes" were showing on the computer. After doing some research on the internet and speaking to mechanics, I found that the radio is not connected to the computer system, but is independent. After speaking with the agency, they asked me to bring in the vehicle to re-evaluate the problem. I will drop off the vehicle on Monday, March 15, 2010.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet 1500. While driving less than 45 mph, the speedometer dial moved from 45 mph to zero, and then from 80 mph and back to zero. The dealer stated that the repair would cost over $500. There were no recalls pertaining to the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were less than 46,000.
Electrical problem: rear passenger doors & lift gate not locking, driver & passenger mirrors reposition to reverse mode when in driving mode. When in reverse mode mirrors reposition to driving mode. When driving I have set the doors to lock out of park position however, only the two front doors driver and passenger doors lock. The two rear passenger doors and lift gate remains unlock while in the driving mode. I have taken the vehicle for service and was told that the correction was made involving the vehicle being re-program at a cost of $150. 00 and was required to leave the vehicle for the technician for about half the day. The repairs made turned out to be a temporary fix that only lasted two months before the same symptoms returned again. Currently having the locking/unlocking, & mirror reposition problem in addition in have a clunking noise under the hood and can be felt in the steering column this problem not yet address for service check conflict with service schedule availability of technician.
I just do not understand why a recall has not been issued for the instrument cluster on the 2004 chevy silverado trucks. How is not having a speedometer not a safety issue? gm did come out with what they do not call a recall for the instrument cluster but it obtained a mileage limit. This is not right they know the part was defective they just do not want to admit it and that is bull. The 1st time I took it to the dealer they would not fix it because the limit was 70k I was at 72+k. Now I am at 187k+ and it should not matter the mileage gm needs to grow up like Toyota and admit their faults.
In about 2006, the fuel guage in my husband's truck stopped functioning. It showed empty when tank was full. No recall notice was issued to us. When he had diagnosed, the diagnosis was a bad chip or electrical problem, or switch. It would be expensive to fix. At this time I was diagnosed with breast cancer & underwent surgery $ mos. Of chemo. My husband, military retiree, stayed with me in hospital. After my chemo, he had both hips replaced and was being treated until 2013 for spinal injections. In July 2013, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer & passed away in August. In the meantime, when he derove the truck he recorded mileage after a fill in order to keep track of amt. Of fuel. I always worried about this as being non-safe, but he could only get into a truck because of his medical condition, so our choices were limited. Now after his passing, the truck is in my name but I do not drive it because I am afraid for my safety because of the defect. I am still under the care of an oncologist and need the truck at this time. Are you able to help with this problem? it would relieve the stress & give me peace of mind regarding my safety. I await your response. I was referred to you by the NHTSA.

My speedometer goes in and out. Typically doesn't work in the morning when it is cold. Sometimes will be working fine then stops and stays where it was when it stopped working. I was told it is the gauge cluster that needs to be replaced.
Parking brake is not holding and we have used it maybe 2 or 3 times. Abs and brake lights stay on all the time. We have a 2001 Chevrolet silverado 1500. I have seen many complaints about this on the iternet. Can you not do something about these complaints.
On two separate occasions the vehicle stalled while driving at highway speed of 50 mph or more. Vehicle was towed to the dealer on the second incident which occurred on February 9, 2005. The dealer believed that the problem maybe a faulty safety cut off switch. Consumer had buddy-booster removed and problem has not reoccurred.
Consumer complained about electrical problems with headlights malfunctioning.
