Chevrolet 1500 owners have reported 3 problems related to noises during shifting (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
In December 2008 I contacted general motors regarding a continuous "backlash" that had developed in the drive train of my 2004 Chevrolet 4wd pickup truck when the automatic transmission shifted gears along with loud clicking noises that were coming from the speedometer/dash gauges . They advised me to take the truck into a Chevrolet dealer for inspection. In doing so, the dealer replaced the instrument panel cluster on my truck under some settlement that other parties had reached earlier with general motors resulting in extended special coverage. On the issue of the continuous "backlash" in the drive train however, the dealer merely provided me with a bulletin from general motors stating that the "clunk noise" I was experiencing was in their words "a normal condition and no repairs should be attempted. " there is no way that this condition can be considered "normal" and I feel that general motors is attempting to escape their responsibility for what I believe to be the manufacture and sale of a now known defective product. I further believe this defect to be wide spread among their truck and car manufacturing lines and extending over several model years of vehicles. My truck has only 19,000 miles on it when I first noticed this problem and I believe that it can only get worse as time goes by eventually leading to a complete failure in the drive line components of my truck. Please add my voice to what must be a long line of consumer complaints toward general motors regarding this problem. Your help in seeking remedy for consumers like me and others in this corporate failure by general motors would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and please advise me of the action taken.

I have a 1997 Chevrolet silverado 1500 p/u with 115k miles. The transmission started to make a low roaring noise in low gear and would quiet down as it shifted to a higher gear. Over time the noise got progressively louder and eventually made a clanging sound as I took off from a stop. The noise was louder than I've ever heard, so I drove the truck back home a parked it. I've told friends that I needed another transmission and the more I told the more I realized that there was of the same problems in other Chevrolet trucks. This may be coincidence but it's to large of a scale that's costing many people lots of money.
