1 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer

Failure Date: 01/25/2002

This is my second report for the same problem in the same vehicle. The first occurrence was in may, 2001. (see odi id 561620) the most recent occurrence was 1/25/02. In this case, I was driving 30 mph and accelerated slightly to change lanes. As soon as I pressed the accelerated, it depressed to the floor of the vehicle, causing a dramatic increase in speed. I pressed the brake, but it was rock-hard and did not depress one bit. Remembering the previous occurrence, I shut off the engine and coasted to a stop. Only after I reached a complete stop did the brake pedal depress for me. I restarted the engine and it ran smoothly, so I drove to the nearest parking lot and inspected the ccruise and accelerator cables. They were clean and in no way kinked or appeared to have stuck for any other reason. The last time this happened, I drove to a local service shop, where my intelligence was questioned and the whole incident dismissed as driver error. Took the vehicle to the dealership shortly thereafter, and was told that since they could not duplicate the problem, they could not fix it. I fear that I am stuck with an otherwise nice, low mileage deathtrap. It is the primary means of transportation for (pregnant) me and my 4-year-old. Must one or all of us be injured or die for this to be taken seriously? if I choose to sell it, I certainly feel a moral obligation to let any potential buyers know what has happened. Please help me! and this time, please send the signature form (I did not receive one last time) that allows you to report this to the dealership and manufacturer.

2 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer

Failure Date: 07/06/2001

Cruise control cable/ plastic retainer snapped, cruise control engaged by itself. On approach to an intersection accelerator pedal jammed despite release of foot from pedal. Attempted to brake with both feet on brake pedal with no apparent slowing of vehicle. Given the fact that both of my young children were in the vehicle, and we were quickly approaching the intersection, I put the car in neutral. With both feet on the brake and still no slowing of the vehicle, my concern for the safety of my children became overwhelming. With my engine reving at an audibly 'pending- doom' level, and cars cruising directly across my path, ( crossing traffic did not have a stop sign), I slammed my vehicle into park and prayed for it to stop. I then proceeded to turn off the ignition and it wasn't until an eternity of a second later that the vehicle ceased. The sequence of events that took place, ultimately resulted in the towing of the vehicle, and the replacement of the engine. My biggest concern is for the future safety of the many families who own these SUV's. Please contact me.
