16 problems related to hydraulic power assist steering system have been reported for the 1997 Chevrolet C1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
'97 Chevrolet C1500 pickup steering "slips" and then grabs again. This sometimes causes slight to moderate lane changes unexpectedly. This has been ongoing since I purchased the vehicle, but dealership is at a loss as to how to repair it. Why doesn't gm recall these vehicles?.
My vehicle's power steering will overcompensate for curves causing an unsafe loss of steering. Happens at all speeds and both directions.
Variableration power steering is giving consumer some problems, and he almost had an accident. Consumer was travling at 40-50 mph and when changing lanes steering went out. Problem with the steering is that wheel gets too loose when slowing down, and wheel turns more the it should.
When turning to right or left, steering wheel slips for a second leaving you with no control over vehicle, this is a very dangerous problem. No fix yet?.
While driving at any speed andwhen changing lanes or turning a corner, steering seems to get very loose. Owner has tried to report this problem to the dealership. Please provide any further information.
Power steering tends to over-boost under certain conditions. It appears to manifest when the engine is lightly loaded making a slow arcing turn without applying the power assisted brakes. If the brakes are applied, the problem is less prevalent.
When changing lanes or turning, steering pulls with a quick motion.
While driving the power steering takes control of the vehicle. The dealer replaced the steering system and there is still a problem. Consumer staes steering jerks to the left on its own, it never pulls hard and stays it is a stutter pull or a sudden jerk, componets of the steering have been replaced twice.
Steering - at times when stopped, there is no power assist; at times while moving at any speed, there will be way too much power assist causing vehicles to change lanes/run off road rapidly. (this is dangerous) --- heater blower motor makes intermitent ticking noise --- neither problem has been fixed by dealer; dealer says all like models do it; dealer says they have contacted manufacturer and there is no fix.
Power steering will go from power assist to full power with no steering wheel feeling and the vehicle over steers.
Vehicle has erratic steering. The steering wheel unexpectedly twitches or jerks going down the road. It is more prevalent with just normal driving (steering down a road).
Common problem with steering, I. E. Wandering while 35mph or higher, steering wheel resistance changes during turns, vehicle wants to resist steering inputs.
Power steering continually over corrects/assists. The steering will suddenly jump during turns. I have experienced this numerous times. The steering feels as though it is trying to over assist during turns (both gradual and tight turns).
I am having the same steering problem that I have just heard about in the news. Many times, when I am travelling above 35 mph, on a small right steering movement the truck seems to take off to the right. Seems to be happening with increasing frequency.
While driving, steering seems to over react. While going around a curve, wheel seem to cut very hard with out turning steering whewl drastically.
Intermittent steering problems vehicle suddenly oversteers while turning at road speeds.
