Engine Stall Problems of Chevrolet Cavalier

The engine stalls without warning while driving. Engine will start if transmission is put into neutral. The event happens with and without cruise control on. It happens at steady highway speed and when decreasing speed. It went for a couple of months without stalling, but then stalled twice in one week. 2. 2l engine with automatic transmission. Nothing has been done to correct the problem.

When coasting to a stop and depressing clutch, car idle speed will drop below the normal idle speed of 800 rpm. Sometimes, the idle speed will bounce around between 400 rpm and 800 rpm. Other times, the engine will stall. Problem is intermittent, but will usually occur multiple times before fixing itself. The stalling engine is a concern because of the lost of power steering making turns. Dealer unable to duplicate problem.

My daughter was driving her 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier when the engine stalled and she had not power. She tried turning on a side street she had no power steering and no brakes. She tried to get out of way of a truck that was approaching her but couldn't and her car went underneath the truck. Needless to say the car was totaled. The engine stalled once while it was idling so she had to get it jumped. My husband and I thought she might has left something on or wasn't quite sure about what really happened when it died while being parked. I drove it the next day and it seemed fine. After the accident happen she told us that sometimes when she would put the car in reverse it would die. She would has to put it in park and the re-start the engine and the car was fine. We only had the car for a month. We don't know if the transmission had problems or if this was an electrical problem.

After engine warms up on hot day, engine stalls when clutch is depressed as when coasting to a stop. Enigine will restart, but accellerator must be depressed to rev the engine in order to prevent stalling. If vehicle is parked for several minutes, then restarted, problem with stalling is gone. This problem is very intermittent. The same problem is described in oid numbers 10049266, 10039337 and 10037496.

Vehicle stalls when a/c turned off. This happens when vehicle is in park and/or drive and vehicle is at stand still. Dealer has had three attempts to correct defect. Dealer states that they can't engineer a fix for the stall. In process of having vehicle classified a lemon under the state of florida's "lemon law".

The engine has stalled multiple times while driving. The dealer has been unable to identify or rectify the problem. The power steering and brakes become difficult to operate when the vehicle stalls, and because it seems to occur randomly may lead to substantial injury if the vehicle stalls while in traffic.

The engine stalls at odd times making the vehicle, which has power assisted brakes and steering, difficult to control. The dash rattles constantly. The dash was replaced in an attempt to fix the stalling problem but it also rattles constantly. My wife and I have contacted the manufacturer and they displayed blatant disregard for our problem by saying that they were going to abide by their 3 year/ 36000 mile warranty( which is exactly what they are not doing, since the vehicle is still not repaired). This vehicle is dangerous!.

Engine stalls intermittently while driving at higher speeds of 50+ mph. When engine stalls all power assist features, I. E. , power steering and power brakes fail to operate. Dealership has examined vehicle six times and cannot determine cause of problem. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
