Steering completely failed. Could not turn steering in any direction. This happened while driving into my driveway. I was very lucky that this didn't happen at the very busy intersection that I just came from. I went to my chevy dealer and they knew nothing about any recall. This thing is going to kill people.

The intermediate steering shaft has gone out. The entire steering column and electric power steering on all Cobalts have had numerous recall issues. This is just another example of Chevrolet utilizing inferior products on their vehicle resulting in expensive repairs in addition to steering problems whereby the steering becomes extremely difficult intermittently and ultimately resulting in steering failure should the problem not be resolved. The same steering symptoms from the recall regarding the electric power steering issues.
My power steering went out on my 2006 chevy Cobalt while driving in a parking lot. This resulting in an increased difficulty steering at low speeds. I took it to a local Chevrolet dealership for repair and although they replaced the power steering motor, which was under a recall, they also need to replace the whole steering column assembly since it too was damaged, as replacing the motor did not fix the issue. The dealership could not confirm or deny that the issue of loss of power steering being the result of the motor failing or the steering column failing. They also could not confirm or deny if it was the motor failing that caused the failure in the column to need replaced as well. If it was indeed not the motor that failed and instead the steering column failing due to manufacturer error does that not produce a similar issue of safety as the failing of the motor (which is currently recalled).
At a speed of about 5-10 mph the steering failed. The recall number n100023 was preformed on 7/15/2010 at 63,057 miles. The part seems to have failed again. My wife was in the middle of teaching our daughter how to park and now we are afraid to even let her drive the car with the recall for the ignition switch, there has to be a solution fix for this problem reoccurring.
The electric steering assist failed and I was barely able to get the vehicle off the road safely. I have owned the car 16 months and have had two failures of the electric assist steering system. I have inquired at a local dealership about any update bulletins or repairs that would fix the problem and was told none existed yet at that time but there may be a recall. This has not happened.
These cars are notorious for the electrical steering mechanisms to fail, parts break inside of the steering column making rattling sounds constantly while driving, my master mechanic father couldn't even figure out how to fix it, the stability is wobbly, hard to keep in a strait line while driving. These model year vehicles are terrible and needs to be part of the gm recall pertaining to the electrical steering. Look at any Cobalt complaint forum, its insane, these cars are dangerous and have had nothing but problems since I bought the car.

The power steering on my 2006 chevy Cobalt has failed 3 times in the past 2 weeks. The first 2 times, I was just pulling into my driveway after driving about 60 miles when the steering failed. The car chimed, the dashboard display read "power steering," and the car instantly became difficult to maneuver. Both times, the failure occurred just after or during a sharp turn after a long drive. The most recent failure, today, happened while driving in a straight line, at low speed, after only 20 miles of driving. When the car is restarted, the steering becomes fully functional again. However, I am worried that it will fail again at a critical moment. I cannot predict when it will happen next.
Problem with the 2006 Cobalt regarding the power steering,I got one and first 2 scnd was all ok, then I see the steering failure come up and could not turn the steering much,I was about to crash into another car and in last minute void big collision, I pray to god all end good but car in dealer for fixing ,I cant believe this cars on the street with young teen, old woman, children and family driving this car ,I do not think there a recall on this failure and find hundred of complain on the internet ,this was last american car I will have ,please look into this before too many big lost happened. Thanks.
2006 chevy Cobalt steering failed taking a sharp turn causing car to cross centerline hitting another car head on, son suffered a very bad broken leg requiring a rod from knee to ankle.
My Chevrolet Cobalt 2006 was purchased used at a kia dealership in July 2008. On Friday, 9/4/09, as I was driving back from the mall with my four-year-old daughter in the car, the dashboard display flashed powersteering and my powersteering failed immediately. The car has just over 70,000 on it. The dealer said it will be $800 to fix. Should a steering column really fail this quickly for the amount of money I'm paying for this car?!.
Steering failure in the Chevrolet Cobalt. I was driving and the power steering went out. Took car in to the Chevrolet dealers services department, I was told that it was the intermediate steering shaft, I was told that this part was replaced but when they test drove the car they found the steering to be impossible to turn. They released the car back to us without solving the problem. I find this to be troubling since this is their product. This is a very serious problem and gm should be liable for this problem. There should a recall on the steering column in the Cobalt, before someone is killed.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle resisted unexpectedly while making a turn. The driver exerted greater effort to turn the steering wheel. The power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The driver pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned off the engine. The vehicle was restarted after a few moments and resumed normal operation. The failure occurs without warning whenever the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they stated that the steering motor failed. The repair part was unavailable. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 52,051.
I bought a 2006 chevy Cobalt brand new and immediatly questioned why the sterring wheel shook whenever I braked. I was told by the dealer and another independent mechanic that because the vehicle was a small plastic gas saver that it was to be expected. The shaking of the sterring wheel gets very severe when going downhill and in incidences of quick stops. I was so sure this car was an accident waiting to happen I did not allow my 17 year old driver to drive it. Now, I am hearing about other cevy Cobalts that have steering failure and I no longer accept the answers that I have received from the so called professionals. I hope the government will force gm into a recall before my steering fails and I find myself in the hospital because my steering has failed.
