1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2017

My rack and pinion which is part of the power steering has separated and I am having trouble steering. I had my car diagnosed recently and they mechanics at midas gave me an estimate saying I need to have my rack and pinion replaced. My rack and pinion is clanging together where it separated when I drive. The mechanics told me my steering could go out at any time.

2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2013

The steering mechanism on the vehicle has become faulty, fortunately this occured on leaving my house and I was not traveling at speed. . As one drives the steering begins to pull heavily to the right and one has to forcibly hold the steering wheel to keep the vehicle from leaving the road. I took the vehicle to a local mechanic. The initial thought was that this related to the rack and pinion. This was replaced but didnt solve the problem. The mechanic made some inquiries and found that the vehicle had been subjected to a recall for faulty steering. After further examination, he found that the issue related to a sensor in the steering column which had become faulty. Since a recall had been carried out in August 2012, he suggested I refer the matter back to the vendor who performed the recall. The vendor jimmy gray of southaven have told me that the recall was only for a steering motor replacement and that the sensor replacement was not covered. Apparently one needs to replace the entire steering column when the sensor fails. I contacted gm and they are supporting jimmy gray and refusing to replace the sensor as part of the recall. The issue related to the motor asembly may have been wrong in the first place, it could have been the senor all along causing the problem. It would be greatly appreciated if you could look into this matter and advise. This vehicle belongs to my son, I cannot let him drive it the way it is at present.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact was driving 10 mph when the vehicle exhibited an unusual metal to metal noise from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics where they both were unable to duplicate or locate a failure. The dealer was informed of the failure and advised the contact that the failure was potentially caused by the rack and pinion needing replacement. The vehicle was repaired at the owners expense. The failure mileage was 52,432 and the current mileage was 52,797.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

2006 chevy Cobalt . The car started to rattle when driving couple days latter the steering wheel started to wobble from side to side. I took it to a automotive repair garage and had the look at the problem and was told by the garage that the rack & pinion steering assembly needed to be replaced. There was a lot of play in the steering assembly. The garage had me speak to the local chevy dealer. The service department informed me that there has been major problems with the Cobalts steering and there is 1. 3 million chevy & pontiac cars that have a steering issues but there is nothing they could do for me but buy a new assembly at $367. 00 plus labor to correct the problem. Gm might recall the problem. The steering has locked up on me today after the gm dealer said it was ok to drive. Thank god I was no going at a low speed. I hope that nobody gets killed. I have parked the car until I can have a new assembly installed by the repair garage. The assembly is a special order from a gm dealer. This also takes a toll on the tires and front end.
