1 Battery Cable problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/13/2013

Recently my 2007 Cobalt that I have only had for about a year started twitching out on the dashboard. I started the car to find the gauges fluttering, the security system light came on, it flashed power steering and low fuel ( car has full tank) as well as check engine. I pulled it into to drive where it clunked hard and there was a clicking sound coming from the shifter as well as the power steering was out. I disconnected the battery cables and it reset the computer with no problems thus far. The car has been ok for the last day and a half until today when very quickly the power steering light flashed and went off. The driver side speaker stopped working but flashes on randomly as well as the radio buttons don't work from time to time. I noticed a lot of recalls and similar problems with other peoples vehicles. I would like to know what is causing this electrical issues and have them fixed, I feel my safety is at risk, especially if the power steering shuts off again, this time while I am driving.

3 Battery Cable problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/15/2012

It will not let me type in the affected part. It was the ignition. The car was sitting still and the ignition would not shut off. The key cpuld be removed and replaced and could be turned, but it would not shut down. . I had to call aaa to have them come to remove the battery cable, (I had to go online to find out where the battery was located) (because even my aaa did not know where it was. We then had aaa tow the vehicle to the dealership in laurel, MD and they said that the ignition had fallen apart. They put another ignition in, howeve, I wonder if it is out of the same batch that is causeing problems now. They also did something to the electric power steering at the same time.

4 Battery Cable problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/19/2011

Could not shut car off when parked. The key would not move lock to shut car off. Could move key forward (to start), but could not move to off. Immediately drove car to dealer. Dealer told me they had to disconnect battery (while the car was running) to shut of the car then proceeded to replace the ignition cylinder. The remarks on dealer repair invoice were " replaced ignition cylinder due to the key getting stuck in the housing and the cylinder blowing up". Note that I consider not being able to shut off a running car extremely unsafe! in case something happens like throttle sticking etc. (don't know if there is any history of throttle sticking on this model yet). Also, generally it is bad practise to disconnect the battery cable on a running engine. This may affect the computer (future safety issue? or future expensive electrical system repairs). Does gm condone this practise at their dealers? dealer used my extended warranty and charged $106. 00 for the deductible to fix this safety item. I found similar 2009 Cobalt ignition issues on your NHTSA website, ref. Odi id's 10364046, 10368042, 10361530, 10394051.

5 Battery Cable problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/28/2010

After having the recall work done on my 2005 chevy Cobalt for the power steering assist less than 2 hours later all of the lights on the dash start flashing ( brake, abs, traction control, security ) the transmission starts acting up and you could hear a clicking noise coming from the shifter and the dash led said power steering. . . . . . And sure enough the power steering failed, pulled to the side of the road shut the car off for a few minutes then restarted the power steering re-set but the rest of the problems persisted, finally got the car to the house by manually shifting the transmission because if I didn't it shifted very hard like it was going to tear something up, got on line found that this problem is found in other Cobalts, one suggestion was to remove the battery cable over night and that should re-set everything, I did that and sure enough it re-set it, however this has happened about 15-20 times since the re-call work so it's not the assist motor at fault it is g. M. At fault for not re-calling this problem.

6 Battery Cable problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

Second 2006 chevy Cobalt owned. The first had an electrical issue and burned to the ground within a month of purchasing it. The air had gone out on it and we had returned it to dealer where it was serviced. Within a week it caught fire in traffic. We assumed the dealer did something incorrect when reconnecting the battery cables. Partly because the fire had started in trunk where battery was. We thought it was human error so we purchased another 2006 Cobalt. It started dying in traffic at intersections when stopped or when you allow it to idle. Took it to several auto stores and had put on machine. Answer was rapid misfire. Bought new sparkplugs and wires. Replaced those to no avail, tried gas treatments for the shuttering engine, to no avail. Took it to mechanics twice. They replaced the cooling sensor. Still cutting out and wouldnt idle properly. Took back to mechanic. He couldnt find anything. Noticed one headlight off when we picked it up. Took it home to investigate and headlight back on. We believe its a short somewhere in system. Doesn't die when lights are off. Aproxomately 98,000 miles. Had a minor issue with a gas leak. Took it to local dealer and was addressed immediately. No other major issues.
