1 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/07/2017

2 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

Rear brakes wear the pads unevenly and scratch the rotors. Common problem that most 2008+ Cobalt ss owners experience. Due to the faulty brakes, the hand brake will often not work, which is a large inconvenience in a car that is only available with a manual transmission. This is most noticeable when trying to park on a hill.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

Rear brakes making lots of noise, and are crap. This car should have alot more recalls. Stop letting gm screw us hard working people! my car is moving when I hear the noises, my brake pads are new so this is not the problem.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/21/2015

About the third time that I have had to replace the rear brakes with in less than 30000 miles. The parking brake does not hold the car. The pads wear uneven, only the interior pad is being worn. Gm dealership continues to state that this is normal wear, which is impossible. And braking performance is compromised by this uneven and premature wear of the rear brakes.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/15/2013

Premature rear brake wear, noise started at 17500 miles, complete failure at 23500 miles, this car has been pampered and never driven in snow and only driven by one driver. Rotors are badly scored, pads gone, unheard of wear for this kind of mileage!.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Noticed parking brake not holding anymore. Then checked rear brakes and found rear passenger side inner brake pad (not the outer pad) completely worn out. . . . All other pads on car have atleast 70% pad left. Never seen anything like this before with this low of mileage with not being driven in any winters. Hope there is a fix for this! may be proportion valve design problem?.

7 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

The rear brake pads are worn severely unevenly. The inside pads are down to metal while the outside pads are still at least 50%. The rotors are deeply scored because of the wear.

8 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 02/07/2012

Despite low mileage on vehicle. Excessive wear on rear pads and severely scored. Front rotors also scored. This is a material failure or defect as I have never owned any other vehicle that required rotor replacement at such low mileage.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

I have had to replace the rear brakes 4 times and still haven't replaced the front I get stock pads and rotors from chevy dealer! and within 500 miles the rotors are all scored up and look like they have 20k on them. I see this being a serious safety hazard for someone who does not realize it because they just replaced them! fix this issue please! I noticed this for the 4th time on December 1st. I was backing up and it made a horrible sound I got out to check and the rear pads are almost gone! I have put maybe 8k on them and the rotors look like a tiger attacked them, I dont believe I should have to pay for this again so soon!.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/25/2011

At 20,300 miles, the inner rear brake pads had worn completely down to the metal and scored the rotors to the point they had to be replaced. The dealership maintains this is normal wear. The front brakes were fine and the outer rear pads while worn, were still within acceptable limits. After seeing numerous complaints on the NHTSA web site (144 out of 168 total complaints, or 86%) nearly identical to mine, this is clearly a glaring safety issue - 144 complaints for a low-volume 2-year old vehicle. I cannot understand why the NHTSA has not initiated an investigation already. Perhaps they are waiting for fatalities caused by this obvious defect before taking action. Updated ivoq 12/01/11.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

Brake pads and rotors did not last. My brakes needed replacing way earlier than they should. It's a safety hazard.

12 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/06/2011

At about 5000 miles I noticed grooves developing in the rear brake discs. At 10,000 miles I have only 35% left in the rear brakes as the grooves have deepened and now damage the pads every time they are engaged. At this rate the brakes will fail at before 16,000 miles of use.

13 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/28/2011

Squeking brake pads in the rear.

14 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 02/16/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt ss turbo. The contact stated his rear brake pads were prematurely wearing out rapidly. The rotors and brake pad never made any noise alerting the contact there was something wrong. When the vehicle was being serviced the mechanic showed him how the rotors and brake pads were worn. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 31,000 and the current mileage was 40,000.

15 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

Brakes started squealing a few months after buying the car brand new. Now, about 1. 5 years later, they are grinding an excessive amount and their performance has extremely decreased. I fear I will have to change entire rotors and pads to fix this problem out of my own pocket within the next month on good aftermarket parts since the factory can't produce good quality oem parts and general motors doesn't give a flying ****. I informed my local dealer of the problem and they shrugged me off, but only after wanting to charge me $60 to just look at them. I shouldn't have to pay for them to inspect brakes that are faulty in under 2 years, and 20,000 miles; and I also have an extended warranty that I paid for. Apparently, it's just mainly the rear brakes that are the issue with these cars, but every owner I know, who hasn't already replaced the brakes with aftermarket performance parts, have the exact same issue, and in some cases, much worse. If the brakes fail within the next month or two and an accident happens(quite possible since rust is appearing on one of my rear rims due to the rotors being scoured so excessively, I fear one of them may let go and snap completely off)before either a recall, or I put aftermarket products on, gm will be facing a lawsuit by yours truly; especially if serious injury occurs.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/14/2010

Front brakes squeal squall at low speeds when coming to a stop, rear brake pad life is very poor. . . Only 13,000 miles on car and already looking at pads in 6,000-10,000 miles.

17 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/07/2010

My rear brakes on my 09 Cobalt ss are wearing unevenly. My right side rear brake pads are completely used up and as a result have begun to grind on to the rotors and caused them to form pits, and or grooves. Very disappointing.

18 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/16/2010

2009 chevy Cobalt ss turbo rear rotors scored badly driver side, inner rotor scored worse, 6,700 miles on the vehicle pads screech also at a stop.

19 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/11/2010

Normal driving lead up to the extremely premature failure of the rear rotors and brake pads, increasing stopping distances which could result in a crash. I took my car to the Chevrolet dealer and, though at only 25,000 miles, they said I needed to *replace*, not resurface the rotors. 25k miles! to remedy the problem, I had to find and purchase higher-quality rotors and brake pads and had to pay to get them installed. I believe this surprising and extraordinarily early failure--even though it may fall under "maintenance"-- should be investigated.

20 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/28/2010

I have a 2009 Cobalt ss. The rear brake rotors started scoring around 5,000 miles and and rear pads were completely worn away with 19,800 miles.

21 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

Inside rear brake pads completely worn through at around 20,000 miles. Dealer would not cover brakes so new aftermarket pads were purchased and installed.

22 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

A terrible grinding coming from rear brakes. The brakes wear out too quickly (and the rotors are being scored at 100mile-20,000mile cars) also inside rear pads start to get noisy.

23 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/12/2010

I just bought a 2009 Cobalt ss that only has 3289 miles on it and the rear brakes are already going bad, and the rear rotors are getting deep gouges. This could be a very bad problem. Would hate to see this turn into another Toyota thing specially when the ss is such a great car. I think a recall should be done and better rotors and pads should be put on the ss Cobalt.

24 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/03/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that while traveling at 10 mph, the rear spring on the driver side wheel that held the brake pads fractured and caused the wheel to lock. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the mechanic advised that the manufacturer had changed the design of the part from a stem to a spring. The failure mileage was 25,600 and the current mileage was 26,000. Updated 10/13/10. Updated 10/19/10.

25 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/07/2010

Uneven and excessive wear on the rear brake pads and rotors. When the dealership pulled the pads there where chunks of metal that appeared to be rotor material embedded in the pads.

26 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/11/2010

Front & rear rotors scored severely with deep grooves throughout. The car has less than 12,000 miles. Braking is severely hindered during wet conditions and periodically the brakes are noising making "screeching" sounds as though metal to metal is touching during braking. Problem is most likely due to brake pads being far to hard of a material causing excessive wear on the rotors.

27 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

1. Normal driving conditions since purchase of vehicle in July 2008. 2. Failure includes extreme premature wear and scoring on rear rotors and uneven wear on rear brake pads. 3. Original dealership turned and milled rear rotors at 7800 miles. Vehicle is now back at same dealer at 16000 miles for same issue.

28 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/27/2010

Every 7k miles, I need to replace rear brakes pads and get them resurfaced by the dealer until it will go out of warranty.

29 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

Everything was fine until about 6000 miles when I noticed slight brake noise coming from the rear brakes. I didnt notice the groves in the rotors until after I got stuck on interstate 465 in the snow because the back brakes were dragging. I know the back brakes were dragging because I had to put my car into first gear and push my own car with the door open. I know bad idea. I noticed that the rear tires didn't start rolling until they got to clean pavement. There was less than one inch of snow on the roads. It took me two hours to get home from work which is a fifteen minute drive normally. I had to wait a week for the snow to melt so I could drive my car to the dealership and they gave me a loner vehicle which I drove for over three weeks waiting for them to fix my car. They couldn't tell me what was wrong but they did replace the pads and rotors. This occured at roughly 10,000 miles. And 10,000 miles later the rotors were grooved again. So I went back to the dealership again this time they didn't want to fix the brakes but my uncle knows the owner of the dealership and he got them to fix it. I drove a loner again for a few weeks. And finally I took my car back to the dealership last week with 32,895 miles on it with the exact same problem. This time they said g. M. Won't cover the repair under warranty. They said the brakes failed due to being dirty. Lol ! I wash my car every week. I still have the defective parts on my car that I drive everyday. The brake noise is slowly getting worse. Almost forgot due to the rear brake issue my rims have discoloration from the heat. Not horrible but it shouldn't be like that.

30 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

2009 Cobalt ss - rear brakes worn. The dealer has ordered new rotors but not pads.

31 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/25/2010

My 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt ss rear brakes had to be changed before the front brakes (40000km). The rotors were heavily scored to a point where they could not be resurfaced. The pads were worn out unevenly and had a different levels of wear. The front brakes at 60000 still have lots of brake pad left. I replaced the brakes myself and did not keep the old parts.

32 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

I have a 2009 chevy Cobalt ss with excessive rear brake wear on the rotor and pads. The front brakes show normal wear, but the rear rotors have major grooves in the inner surface.

33 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/02/2010

1) daily driving, 90 percent highway, 10% city. No abnormal driving leading to situation. 2) very pitted and worn rear disc rotors, loud and becoming dangerous. 3) new rotors, aftermarket, new pads, aftermarket.

34 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated the rear brakes would squeak when applied while driving at any speed. The contact also stated the brake pedal would vibrate when the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the rear rotors were warped and the brake pads needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred three times and was repaired twice by an authorized dealer. The failure mileage was 100 and the current mileages was 36,000.

35 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/31/2009

Brakes failed, slid in the snow and hit the passenger rear rim against the curb. This even lead to the rim being replaced, along with the axle. After the car was fixed, I took the car back to the dealer where it was looked over too see if there were any manufacturer's defaults. Then I was told they could do nothing for me because they only had a 12 month/12,000 mi. Warranty, and my car was 17 months old and had 19,200 mi. , so I had to file a complaint with general motors. I then replaced the rotors and pads around the entire car, out of pocket.
