1 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/21/2014

I've had several recalls on my car. Air bags, power steering, ignition switch. I was only able to get 2 of these fixed because the others were not "valid" recalls for my vehicle. One of the issues the ignition switch recall has is that the car turns off. The car. Turns. Off. I don't know why and I don't know how. I just know, the car turns off. This has been a daily battle for me. It started a few months before the recall was released and continues to this day. I was driving across an intersection, the light just turned green, a few cars in front of me. I press the gas slightly & my car turns off. I wasn't even going 10 mph. I wasn't even going more than 5! another incident a few days prior, I was coming to another intersection and another car in the opposite direction was making a left so he was in the middle of the intersection. Thankfully I was not going so fast that I could've stopped and he could've passed. Just as I was approaching the lines to cross into the intersection, my car turned off again. My car is constantly turning off in the middle of rush hour traffic. Thankfully it's traffic so it's going slow but it has happened that my car will just turn off in the middle of me actually driving! there have been many times that I am trying to make a turn and my car turns off. Mid turn! in the middle of the street. Do you know how dangerous that is? it just reminds me of those movies where those silly people get stuck on train tracks. Why would you park or stay on a train track? OH, I know, just own a Chevrolet! it'll constantly turn off. Thankfully, I have not gotten stuck on a train track but what I have encountered is just as dangerous. I am constantly driving around with other people and children. My car constantly turning off, especially in the middle of the street is a great hazard to myself and my passengers. I fear my life driving this car. :(.

2 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/20/2014

I ordered my parts for the gm ignition switch in April. It is now mid-September. I have been getting the run-around from both the dealership that I ordered the parts from as well as the gm customer care. I am a resident physician who drives 30 miles each way to and from the hospital, six days per week. Twice now I have been told I'd hear back from the gm district manager within 24-48 business hours. I am still awaiting a call-back from a conversation last Thursday. Not everyone has a 9-5 job with holidays off, a second family car to use, a work address close to public transportation or the disposable income to pay for a rental car. I am using just the single key, but I do not have the peace of mind that I am driving in safe vehicle, as my car has switched into the accessory position both before and after the recall. A $50 per day out-of-pocket cost is not a resolution, it is another burden on the car owner, especially if he or she does not have a driveway or garage to park the faulty car. Hearing "we can't tell when your parts will come in, because so many are being made," or "where did you buy your car? maybe your parts are there," is not customer service, nor is "we'll check with the dealership, and call you back". (then wait 24-48 hrs, just to be called back by the rep who wrote down the wrong dealership name, and has not called back since). This is unreal. There should be a way to track centrally the status of the parts and repairs! this is an endless game of phone tag!.

3 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/12/2014

Ignition instability. After a new battery, two new starters, new electrical fuse box I am still having trouble starting my car. It sometimes starts and sometimes it won't start. It sometimes shakes violently when I try to start it. I turn it off wait a few minutes and then it will start but the engine light comes on. The car has had 3 diagnostics and been in the garage 4 times in the last month trying to figure out what's wrong. I have only owned it for 10 months. It has left me stranded numerous times and continues to even after all the money I continue to put into it. I really don't feel safe driving it since the recall in regards to the ignition issue. Even before the recall I felt that the ignition switch felt loose. The problems I am having all track back to the ignition. It has fried two starters and a fuse box. I would like a loner car.

4 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/18/2013

I can smell a strong gasoline odor while driving and even when the car is parked. I called gm and they said to take it to the nearest gm dealer to have it looked at as there might be something cracked and it would be fixed free of charge. I took it to our nearest gm dealer and they checked it out but said there is no recall on it for this car. I am scared the car is going to start on fire because no one can figure out where the smell is coming from. Or worse yet get carbon monoxide poisoning!.

I previously contacted gm befcause of a power steering issue weeks before my accident. I was crossing the railroad track when I lost all power to my car and it caught on fire.

6 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/22/2013

Started smelling a strong odor of gas inside and out of my car to where I would smell of gas when I drove my car, looked on line for any problems concerning this issue and saw that their had been a recall on the fuel pump in 2012 I believe it was, anyway I did not receive a notice for called gm explained what was going on they made arrangements to have my car towed to a dealership to be repaired which it was well, a day in a half later my check engine light comes on which it hasn't in the past I try to call gm numerous times and leave messages no one returns my calls. I take it back to dealer they put it on machine come out say your tank is filling up with a vapor your going to have to leave it we have to remove the tank. I get a call couple days later they replaced my recalled ignition switch but my gas tank has a crack. I go up there with my sister and after lengthy discussion I was told that the crack was a defect on the manufacturer end,it's up to me to get it fixed so, I point blank asked shouldn't they be recalled if it's a defect and I was told yes they should but they won't because they have to much going on right now with everything else. My opinion I just think it's just sad that someone has to get hurt before anyone will take responsibility for their mistake.

8 Carrier/rack problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/03/2009

I am concerned that chevy might have fixed my 2008 ignition switch with parts that might have been in stock for years, perhaps with switches that were found to be defective in prior years. I worry about this because, per media reports, gm did not change part numbers when it hid the fix on prior year Cobalts. I no longer own the Cobalt, but my daughter has it now. I think we would have noticed by now if it was defective, but what about other people. The Cobalt's ignition would not release the key. I brought it to gm who fixed it. The dates above are guesses. Your investigator might have to worry about other years if it can't track part numbers used to fix ignition switches replaced for another reason.
