41 Ignition problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

The key will not turn in the ignition cylinder. Therefore the car will not turn off. There is a special bulletin #10256 about this exact problem including only the 2009 Cobalt however as there is not an open recall the manufacturer will not repair my car because my car has a branded title and they will only repair 'open recall' items. This issue is not listed in the global database when my VIN is searched but it needs to be listed under my VIN and there needs to be an open recall on this issue because it is certainly a huge safety problem that many owners have been experiencing. The only way to turn the car off is to get under the hood and remove the fuel relay fuse. In case of a fire this would be a catastrophic safety issue which could result in serious injury or even death.

46 Ignition problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/18/2011

This is a 3 year old 2008 gm Cobalt with less than 35,000 mile. I was out running errands 7/18/11. I drove in to parking spot and attempted to turn my car off. The key did not turn to turn the car off nor could I remove the key from the ignition. I drove my car to gm dealer and was told the ignition cylinder needed replacement. I was surprised because the car is only 3 years old and I had no other problem. I have owned two other cars, one for 10 yrs and one for 11 yrs never at any time did I have any problem with getting the key from the ignition or problems turning my car off. I believe that the ignition cylinder was defective and so I should not be responsible for paying for a defective part to be replaced. Thank you for the opportunity to enter my complaint.

49 Ignition problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

I have a 2006 Cobalt. Periodically I can't open the driver door from inside and I have to roll down the window to pull handle from outside to get out. And then fuss with the latch mechanism sometimes to get the door to shut. And right now my locks are going up and down by themselves while I drive and when I'm parked. . I lock my doors and I come out to my car and they are unlocked. And I can't disengage my alarm. . . Soo every time I open the door I have to jump in and turn on the ignition. I called the local chevy dealer and of course they haven't heard any complaints like this. Although, I've read many complaints like this. . They tell me if I want to bring it in, I have to pay for them to diagnose it! I'm still making payments on this car!.

60 Ignition problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/27/2010

I bought my 2008 Cobalt as a program car in November 2008. I received a recall for the power steering motor in September 2010. The motor was replaced. I thought that maybe that was the problem of the intermittent ease of turning the key. When I picked up the car for that repair I was told that the ignition cylinder had to be replaced because it was intermittently locking up. I picked up the car and then the emergency switch broke, that was replaced and during this time I was told that the front speakers blew out. Those were replaced, and now the radio/clock has to be replaced which is not under warranty. I do not believe that my two-year car is reliable. I told the service manager that I believe the car is faulty because it is "too young" to have this much repair work in a very short time.

62 Ignition problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/23/2010

Power steering message appeared within a few days of having it serviced due to the power steering recall. Power steering message appears all the time (almost every time I drive it). Sometimes power steering message appears and car starts jerking and is hard to steer). When that happens I have to pull over and shut the car off and restart it. Sometimes this works but occassionally it doesn't. A couple of times I have went to back out of my parking spot at work and have not been able to turn the wheel at all. I have contacted the dealer where it was serviced and chevy and basically was told that they couldn't help me unless I took it to have the problem diganosed at my expense (70- 200 and something dollars), and "if" it is related to the power steering recall they may help me with the cost of the repair. I don't think I should have to pay to have the problem diagnosed when their solutiion to their recall didn't fix the problem. My key has gotten stuck in the ignition a couple of times.

2005 chevy Cobalt: the key continuously gets stuck in the ignition and does not release. It requires numerous attempts and time to either turn the car back on and try again or work the shift lever release until the key is released.
