Steering wheel lock car cannot start and this can happen while driving and could cause a accident chevy knows of problem and has been recalled but has not solved the problem knowed as steering wheel lock.
2005 Corvette coupe, manual trans, z51. Intermittent problem: electronic steering column will not unlock when attempting to start or will not lock on shutdown. Vehicle inoperable, sometimes in potentially hazardous situations e. G. , late night in parking lot, and compromised anti-theft feature. Possibly relevant: when parked but steering failed to lock, continuous battery draw is 4 amps, which might contribute to the "dead battery syndrome" that 2005 m6 Corvettes are known for. Hard to separate the two issues since either way the starter will not engage. Problem has existed since new (2005) but has gotten progressively worse. Gm nonresponsive to multiple owner complaints. Aftermarket "column lock bypass" work-arounds have been sold for this problem, but they are potentially dangerous since they simply spoof the bcm into thinking that the lock is fully released when it is simply unpowered and can easily move into a partially locked position with vibration and time. This is what I recently observed that motivated this safety complaint. Gm finally issued a recall in 2018 (13 years after my) for this problem, but for some reason did not include manual transmission cars in the recall, possible because production was small compared with automatics. But from internet forums, it is clear that this problem affects all 2005 m6 Corvettes.

Nhtsa campaing number 10v172000. My car is presenting this problem, it is completely unsafe to drive and I am afraid to have an accident to weight that there is evidence of the gm dealers problem do not want to attend under its responsibility.
Car stopped at stop sign turning right into traffic, steering became shakier and brakes started locking up and traction control service light came on. Top speed was 20mph.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette. Making a u-turn or any extreme position of steering wheel rotation causes abs and service traction control lights to engage and forces a seizure if the brakes, locking them and preventing any kind of movement. The only solution to unlocking brakes through my experience is to shut off and restart the vehicle.
I was driving my vehicle at approximately 68 mph in a straight line on the highway. The road conditions were dry and cold. I was driving straight and did not hit any bumps in the road when suddenly I felt the steering pulling my car about 1/4 turn to the left and about a 1/2 turn to the right and brakes were applied, not by me. I then heard a chiming noise and saw an error code on my dash saying "service active handling system". I gained control of my vehicle and exited the highway. I read on many forums that other c6 owners, especially years '05-'06 have had this issue and that the defect may lie in the steering wheel position sensor connector. My vehicle is equipped with a telescoping steering wheel where this issue seems to arise.

The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 8-1941692497. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000.
I received a message on the information screen on the dash, it says service active handling system. Is there a recall for this. . Read more...
The active handling appears while driving on a city street and it seems the wheel brake is applied causing me to lose control of the car.
Keep showing " service active handling. " I called my local chevy dealer and they said all of the recalls has been done but it seems like they didn't do a good job fixing it. I bought 2 years ago, and it's very dangerous to drive when its slippery or raining. I almost got rear ended because the wheels locked up.
While driving through a parking lot at roughly 10mph, my car jammed on the front left, then both front brakes, bringing me to a sudden stop. Active handling was showing in the driver information cluster just like when your car loses traction for any reason. . . I thought this was very odd as it wasn't raining, no sand or fluids were present on the road in front of me, and I was barely touching the gas pedal. I then checked to see if I had run something over or if anything was jammed in the wheels/brakes. . . . Nothing visible. I get back in, reverse just fine, but as soon as I shift back to first and attempt forward motion boom it jams the brakes on again. I then re-clutched, tried again with a little more gas, thinking maybe I do have something stuck under the car. . . . Nope, it still brings me to a stop immediately. At this point, I was freaked out. . . . (needless to say) I held the active handling (traction control) button down until the system was fully disabled, after doing this I was able to drive the car back to work. I then found out about the recall and called the dealer. They told me that this recall for active handling had been completed in 2010. I asked them to please verify this as I had a headlight recall to do anyways and scheduled an appointment. Long story short. . . The service adviser told me that the previous repair had failed and that it needed to be done again. He then tells me that they do not have to fix my car because they already repaired it back in 2010 and that it would be up to me to cover the cost. After trying for over a week to convince them to do the right thing, I gave up and paid them for the repair. Im very worried that this will also not hold up. If this repair failed in the past, who is to say that it wont happen again, and this time it could cause a crash, even death. Please help, someone has to hold these people accountable.
Power steering hose leak, had dealer remove, replace. I was covered under warranty purchase, also tail lights and headlights inoperable, had dealer perform safety inspection. Items corrected. Recent purchase Jan. 2016 used.
I was driving my car in a business section of town ,I stopped at a stop light and made a right hand turn on red as the car straighten out I accelerated and the right front wheel locked up causing me to loose control hitting the curb and almost got rear ended. A message on my information display said service traction control. I put the car in park and turned off ignition then restarted message was gone and the brakes released. Thank goodness no one was injured. I'm afraid to drive this car.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact applied the brakes and coasted over to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. I purchased my 2005 Corvette c6 convertible used last year. The service active handling light and message comes up often when I drive the car. The code goes away if I turn the car on and off. If I hit a bump in the road the service active handling comes on again. I have not noticed any handling issues. I read the Corvette forum and a thread sent me to this site. Is there a recall that gm should have fixed on my Corvette? if yes, will the recall hold up considering the age of the vehicle? please advise how I should proceed. Accelerated quickly to 35 mph and when I reached the end of the block I attempted to slow and make a right hand turn. At that time I got a warning to check the charging system and noticed I had no power steering. Managed to muscle the wheel to complete the turn (had it been my wife there is no way she would have been able to turn the wheel) and continue slowly down the street to my driveway where I again muscled the car into the driveway. Discovered that the motor was running but the serpentine belt was not moving. Thus no alternator, power steering etc. I had my independent mechanic check it out, discovered that the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer pulley on the crank shaft stripped and the crank shaft was turning and not moving the pulley. He called the dealership to inquire about the parts and they said they have plenty in stock. He thought this was surpising and that it was not a special order part. The service manager told him that they have had a number of similar incidents. Both my mechanic and I think this should qualify for some type of recall if it is happening with frequency. Obviously some kind of design flaw and/or material flaw, plus they didn't key the pulley so if the bolt strips you would not loose the power steering, etc. If this had happened at high speed or during the action of turning I believe a serious accident and/or injury could have occured. Cost of the parts and repair were $2300. 00.
Turned the steering wheel completely. "service stability control" message appeared. Brakes applied automatically and pulled hard to the right. I could not steer. Turned car off the middle of the street. Car was "normal" until the steering wheel get turned completely. Scared it will happen at highway speeds.
I was making a right turn into my neighborhood at approx. 20 mph when right front brake locked up and vehicle swerved to the right. Vehicle would lock up every time I tried to go therefore I had to cut ignition off and restart. This has occurred now three times and each time the brakes locked up and vehicle swerved to the right each time and would not go! I was traveling at a low rate of speed on each occurrence and was making a right turn on each occurrence. We took the car to youman's chevolet in macon ,GA after the first incident and the charges to investigate the problem were going to be so outlandish that we did not pursue. They did not even consider checking to see if there could be a recall on this problem or any other problems we have gone to them with during the last seven years. At that point, we went to a car repair place that we use frequently on all of our vehicles and have a good relationship with. They ran a diagnostic test on the car to check for an error code on the computer but nothing showed up. The technician said that it has not done this enough times to register the problem yet. Since that time, we generally drive with the traction system off when driving in town as it is somewhat scary when the situation occurs. This has not happened to date when the traction system is off and has also not happened when traveling at a higher rate of speed.

The contact stated his VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v172000 (steering); however, the "service active handling system" warning indicator will appear intermittently on the contacts instrument panel. Both the dealer and manufacturer informed the contact that his VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 30,000. The current mileage was 50,000.
Several times while I am driving the front tires will lock up, making my car turn sharply either to the left or the right, or when I am making turns, this brings me to a complete stop. The computer tells me to service the active handling system, well I looked into it and gm had a recall on this, the service bulletin number is TSB-06-02-35-002b. I contacted gm and they said that the recall on my vehicle was accomplished, well, (if it was) it is not working as it was intended to work. I cannot drive this vehicle because it is unsafe !!! do you think gm has said this was completed, but wasn't!! I do not want to tamper with my car, because if it was not corrected I would need proof, is there somewhere I can go to see if this sb was in fact completed? gm said to take it to a dealer, I called the dealer, but they we not aware of any problems like this, so I sure don't want to go back to them, just to have them charge $ me for something that they said that they have accomplished already, or if it was accomplished it did not correct the problem. Can you help, because I can not put the vehicle on the road, and take the chance of hurting someone!!.

Service active handling came on as I touched the brakes. Car pulled to the right. Trying to stay out of the right lane I applied the brakes harder the car jerked to the right. Seems the harder brakes were applied the harder to the right it pulled.

I was driving at approximately 20mph leaving my house when the active handling light came on along with abs lights. My foot was on the gas and in first gear. Suddenly the breaks apply by themselves causing the car to veer left. At this point I could not control my steering wheel to correct the problem. This happens randomly and I can not duplicate the problem. It is very dangerous. I am worried if this happens at high speeds, a very bad accident can occur. This first occurred on 08/03/11. It happened for about 5 minutes when I left my house. I had to turn off all active handling and traction control for this to stop. I drove fine the rest of the day with it off. It did not happen again for a couple of weeks. Around 08/19/11, it happened again. This time at a best buy parking lot traveling at 10mph. I immediately contacted the maita Chevrolet dealership in elk grove, CA and took the car in the next day. I took the car in and they could not duplicate the problem. They said that there is nothing wrong with the car. I told them that it is not normal to drive the car and suddenly the brakes apply by themselves and veers to the left. They said there is nothing that they can do because they could not replicate the problem. I am worried that if this happens on the freeway while I am driving it can be a very dangerous situation for everyone. I am not sure what I can do but I know it is a safety issue.
On may 2010 I received a safety recall notice #10118 for my 2005 chevy Corvette, that there was a problem with the active handling system. I brought it to the chevy dealer and they put a plastic clip on a wire connection. Recently the service active in may ohandling system light will appear and the brakes will apply by themselves and the car does a involuntary nose dive. I shut the car off and it might not happen again for 2 more weeks or so. I contacted chevy with my problem and spoke to brian @ 866-790-5600 ext. 33014 he told me they needed to take the car to ed morse Chevrolet and have it checked out at my expense. They were only responsible to fix this problem one time! I told brian that it was not fixed properly the first time and brought to chevy ed morse sawgrass (954-514-3440) as the dealer requested. When I got there as per the appointment all they did was trying to sell me a new Corvette! please help. . . I don't feel safe to drive my car like this, and at this point I don't really know what to do anymore. . . Sincerely. . . Jeff binder.
Service active traction system lights up and the brakes activate (one or both front wheels lock up) at low speeds while braking and turning at the same time. Very dangerous when traffic has to go around you and you are stranded.
When turning left or right in bad road surface, the steering wheel loses control, the active handling lights comes on, and the abs do not work till the car is on smooth road condition. The car have been service for the above conditions in Chevrolet dealer but the problem remains.
Loud grinding noise and severe vibration when turning steering wheel either at stop or slow speed with or without brakes applied. A few instances of momentary steering loss on turns (bends in road) at speeds approximately 30 mph. Problem started at purchase in July 2005 and has increased in severity over the past 8 months. There is also a "snapping noise" under the center console when the brakes are applied that started 3/16/06. The car has been to the dealership on 6 occasions and I have filed a complaint with general motors customer assistance. Service ticket dated 2/9/06 states "normal characteristic of this vehicle, no repairs to be attempted". Service ticket dated 3/10/06 states "no parts available till 6/06, no work done at this time". The dealership told me this would not be normal in any car but they have been instructed by gm not to make any repairs. I researched the problem on the internet and came across the recall 05v455000 and contacted gm. Gm stated that because my VIN number is not within a certain range that my car in not included, however I feel my car regardless of the VIN number displays the same characteristics of the power steering hose issue.
