Body Problems of Chevrolet Corvette - part 1

The hood unexpectedly opens and can fly up and cause loss of forward vision. The hood can fly off and cause death. With no visibility the a collision can cause death.

Vehicle has open recall 09v491 for roof panel separation. The roof on the vehicle has separated and come apart in pieces leaving the front seal exposed. Gengras Chevrolet in CT has ordered and received the replacement panel which has now been sitting at their dealership for approximately 2. 5 weeks because they refuse to send it to paint until they rectify the outdated paint supply reimbursement cost with gm. In the meantime I have not had a spot for the vehicle inside and if I dont know its going to rain or dont get the car inside somewhere in time the water leaks down the windshield post and into the body control module. Currently the car drains the battery, gauges intermittently do not work as well as the power windows, starter button etc. From a recent pop up storm. Ive been back and forth with the dealer and spoke to a gm rep, niehter of which have proven useful in the situation. I just keep getting pushed off and told that I have to wait for them to figure it out with gm, even though it could potentially take 2 or more weeks to paint the top once the body shop actually gets it. This whole process has started approximately August 1st.

Vehicle starts but will not shift out of park with foot on brake. Eventually after repeated attempts or leaving vehicle for a little while, re-try and issue goes away. Issue happens randomly and cannot be replicated easily.

I am the owner of a 2019 Corvette zr1. I was driving when I heard a loud rattle sound coming from the front bumper area. During this time the front end of my car became hard to control. I slowed down, parked the car and inspected the front end. Upon inspection I saw that my front splitter had nearly disconnected from my car. I tried to drive slowly and make it home but the splitter was scraping and I didn't feel that it was safe. I also didnt want to cause any more damage. Upon inspection from a shop it was found that the center support bracket that holds the front splitter on properly was never installed on my during pre-delivery inspection. After speaking with several other zr1 owners that this has happened to we now believe that some chevy dealers are forgetting to put this center support bracket on during pre-delivery inspection which we believe creates a very dangerous situation. We have informed chevy about this safety issue but they have not responded.

The hood popped open while driving damaging the car. Fortunately there were no other cars around and I was able to safely pull over. I was driving at 43mph when the hood flew open blocking my vision and damaging the car. I have video of the incident from the performance data recorder in the car. The hood had not been opened at all the day this occurred and I had driven on multiple other roads including the highway without incident. The car had just over 1400 miles on it at the time of the incident.

I just got my 2020 Corvette delivered last week. I am the first owner of the car and today I was driving up pch towards malibu. Went up to 80-90 mph at times. Drove for about 100 miles. I stopped to get something to eat. Got back in my car and proceeded up the canyons for some spirited driving. The car is already broken in at 1300 miles. I decided to pull off the road to take some pictures of the car. I put the car in park with the parking brake on and left the engine running with the key fob in the cupholder. After I got the shots I wanted, I proceeded to drive down the canyon and within 15 seconds I heard the front hood latch click/thump (same sound you hear when you press the button to pop the hood) right before I saw the hood fly up and heard a snap. Sudden loss of visibility almost caused my car to go off the cliff as I couldn't see the turn. Luckily I was able to stop the car before going off the road. The hood did not hit my front windshield, but there is severe hinge damage as well as damage to both fenders and the front hood. I had my windows down and my roof off, did not have the radio on and it was quiet road. There were no warning lights that the hood latch was open/disengaged. Even when the hood flew up, there was no indicator light or beeping. I put the hood back down as carefully as I could. I had no choice but to try my best to close the hood since I was in an area with no reception in order to keep driving. In the closed position, the hood is now about 3/4 to 1 inch lower than each fender. Super paranoid I tried to drive as slowly as I can home, but I did reach speed up to 55 mph. Thankfully it did not happen again. Gm spokesperson blames it on user error. I guarantee you guys this is not user error.

The front trunk of the vehicle flew open while driving causing blocked visibility and created bent hinges for the lid. This happened on a city street and did not take it on the highway afterwards for safety reasons.

Hood on vehicle could come unlatched since there is only one latch point, no safety latch. The hood releases twice and could spring open, causing impaired vision to the driver, and flying objects to vehicle in the rear,. In addition to causing extensive vehicle damage. . There have been at least 7 reported on the Corvette forum. The forum represents only a small sample of the approx. 7000 vehicles produced to date. I have secured mine using hi tensile cord. , awaiting a fix from gm.

I was pulling out of the driveway and onto the city road driving about 30-40 mph and my front trunk opened on it's own. I had no warning signs or got no audible alerts when my front trunk opened on its own. I've been in contact with my dealership and they said gm warranty will not cover the problem or fix my damages, that my insurance needs to cover that.

While driving at a prudent speed the hood of my vehicle opened with some damage to the hood(sprung hinges) and body damage. I got a signal that the hood was open and then the hood sprung open. I was driving at 35-40 mph at the time and came to a stop in a prudent manner. (no visibility).

Front hood/trump flew open @ 20 mph when driving through neighborhood. Bent the latches, damaged the hood and quarter panel. Latch is flimsy and lacks better locking mechanism to protect it from opening.

While driving at 20-30 mph, the front hood released and the hood opened to a near vertical position. After stopping I closed the hood but it took a lot of effort. When closed the hood now is recessed near the hinges and there is some paint damage to the edges of the hood and fenders. It appears that the hinges are damaged. I immediately took it to a dealer and they are to research the issue with chevy engineering. The damage has been repaired under warranty. I am concerned that this may re-occure.

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is truly a unique looking automobile and it attracts attention everywhere you go. Almost everybody wants to look at it. On 04/30/2020, I was at a local shopping center and several people were admiring the car and looking at it. The vehicle was sitting stationary in a parking space, the engine was running and the vehicle was in park. When the people had finished admiring the car, I got into it and proceeded to the exit. From the exit, I turned onto the main road (a us designated hwy) and accelerated. When I reached a speed of approximately 25 to 30 mph, the front hood (also called a frunk), flew up and completely blocked my vision of the roadway. I was able to successfully brake and pull to the shoulder of the highway without further incident. The "frunk" hood completely blocked my vision of the roadway and damage was done to the hinges, hood and fender on the driver's side.

While driving the 2020 Corvette at a low speed, the front hood flew open and impaired my visibility. This is Chevrolet's first attempt at a mid-engine car. So the front hood is actually a truck. They failed to engineer the appropriate safety latch features into the hood that would prevent this from happening. Hoods are required to have a secondary latch that must be physically operated to open completely.

Fuel pools on top of fuel tank when you fill up. Strong order of gasoline until fuel level lows in tank. Vapors enters in the interior of car. This happen with each fill up.

The driver door will not open using either the inside nor outside electronic button. Yes, there is a lever on the floor and one in the trunk. Both operate a cable to unlatch the door. The door jam release latch fails at an alarming rate. Salvage yards, ebay, amazon etc have run out of the parts forcing a purchase from gm. Corvette forums and youtube videos abound with talk of replacing these at a cost of $400 at the dealer!! being able to reach the trunk release or even the floor release in the event of an accident would often be difficult to impossible. Gm seems to see this as a money making proposition since the 215,125 cars produced with this feature were never fixed. Gm needs to do something about the expensive replacement cost of such a basic safety feature that fails so often.

The inner portion of the door where the hinges attached has begun cracking that has caused the door to sag. The car has not been in a collision and the door has only been used in a normal manner. The cracking has happened slowly overtime and is continuing.

The rear tail light bezels on my 2016 Chevrolet Corvette stingray are not bolted down, they snap in/out. This is a problem because someone stole mine and I'm sure they were also wanting to get the tail lights. Anyway, the rear tail light bezels are not bolted down, they snap in/out. Someone can easily steal my tail lights after the bezels are removed making my car unsafe for travel. I have a police report of the incident. The vehicle was parked at my home under a car port. There are lots of online videos on youtube that teach anyone how to remove these bezels with just a small tool to grab onto the bezel.

Unable to open drivers door from inside or outside. Had to take to dealer for repair which cost $486. Manual release only way to exit car. Is this a safety issue that should be fixed for free? have seen this being an issue for many Corvette owners. Dealer replaced lock mechanism in body door jam. Works fine now but very expensive!!!.

Roof panel separation recall. My vehicle is out of VIN range for this recall and was not honored. Today the panel separation has gotten worse as wind sounds has entered the cabin from the roof at 65mph on the highway. The panel is separating from the frame due to bad glue.

My 2005 Chevrolet Corvette coupe started making popping and cracking noises at any and all rates of speed some time ago. At a higher rate of speed, the wind noise and whistling sounds are almost unbearable as the noises are so loud. I consulted with youman's Chevrolet in macon, GA as they are the only Chevrolet dealership in our are and they advised me that the top had stated to separate from the lower part and that we would have to purchase a entire new top. Once again, they did not even consider checking to see if there was a recall on this problem. Naturally, our greatest concern is the potential of the upper portion flying off while we are traveling at highway speeds and causing a potential accident to other vehicles or injuries. I recently starting taking the Corvette magazine and much to my surprise, I read that there is a recall on the top. I am disappointed that the Chevrolet dealership did not bother to check on this recall or to advise us of the recall if they were aware of it as we are regular customers and have spent a substantial amount of with them on this Corvette over the last seven years.

Clutch master cylinder failed causing the car to not be able to disengage clutch with pedal making it extremely dangerous to stop car or remove it from gear. Future attempts to start car with on-star on the phone so they could run diagnostic check remotely failed. 3 attempts to start car and it would not start. Towed to dealer and upon arrival towing company had asked for mileage of car. Exactly like above I pushed start button to turn gauges on dash, this time car started and overpowered emergency brake because it was still in gear and it ran into tow truck nearly hitting tow driver and was inches from cutting his legs off. In no way should this car have been able to start in gear and I believe it wouldn't have, had the clutch master cylinder not failed at only 4600 miles.
