36 Body problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

Roof laminate was replaced as part of a manufacturer recall a few years ago. But cracking noise continued until today after a loud knock, the driver side of the roof started leaking air badly. Pulled over and noticed the roof body and not just the laminate had separated from its frame. Opened roof latches and while removing the detachable roof, both rear metal pins that mechanically hold the roof to the frame fell to the ground. Threaded section of both pins had sheared off and roof was only held in place by the rear center hook. Apparently material and pin design is not appropriate for the torque that the roof goes through against the frame during normal driving resulting in complete separation of the roof.

38 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 04/17/2012

Concerning NHTSA recall #s 09v49100 or 06v181000 roof panel failure on 2006 Corvette coup. I inquired with local chevy dealers on this recall because my roof was producing symptoms as indicated in the above recalls, specifically wind noise in the cabin cockpit. Was told by local chevy dealer that my car was not eligible for recall as it was sold with a transparent top and not the solid roof top which is on it now. (I bought the car used) however local chevy dealers say that they don't know of any after market roofs, but the only way to tell is to take off the headliner and then they can see if it was manufactured by gm/chevy. I indicated to chevy customer service that I would be willing to pay to remove and replace the headliner, however chevy says they won't honor the recall even if it is a gm roof. I then wrote a letter to the chairman of gm and his assistant says basically the same thing and won't put it in writing, so they seem to be reluctant to fix the roof if it is a gm product. My question to NHTSA is "if the roof is a gm product, why wouldn't it be covered under the recall?".

41 Body problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 01/25/2012

Water leak in 2005 Chevrolet Corvette caused very strong mold/mildew odor in the car and destroyed the passenger carpet and insulation, which were removed by technician 122 at sun Chevrolet in mcmurray, PA on 1/25/2012. Since driving the car without carpet or insulation, the metal on the passenger side does get extremely hot and could cause serious burns. This problem should be remedied immediately. Recently a rain storm caused more water to leak inside and collect under the passenger seat and almost damaged the electrical components located on the passenger floor while driving. Luckily I had a towel with me and quickly absorbed all of the water and returned back home to vacuum the remaining water before anything electric was damaged. This problem is still occurring and has been determined by a Chevrolet dealership that it may be a faulty weather strip causing the water leak. If I had been going faster at highway speeds this could have caused major damage to the cars electronics and may have even caused the car to shut off which can lead to a traffic accident and cause major injuries or death. The weather strip should be recalled and/or replaced and the leak repaired by general motors llc at no cost because this is a safety hazard and a factory defect. I spent a lot of hard earned money on this car and did not expect any problems like this. This issue alone has already cost me $235. 85 and hours of my life that I will no¿¿t get back. The problem was never resolved in 2012 and only got worse. The cost of the carpet and insulation, that were damaged and removed, is almost $1,000 for replacements and labor. General motors llc is responsible for the leak and should provide these items at no cost as well as a replacement weather strip that does not leak as the original is a factory defect. This water leak has been documented and diagnosed by sun Chevrolet on 10/8/2013.

42 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/11/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 09v491000 (structure:body:roof and pillars). The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who took the roof off in order to perform the repairs. The contact was informed that the roof would be repaired within two weeks. The repairs had yet to be completed after approximately six weeks. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was awaiting a response. The failure mileage was 13,700. As of 2 months today (10-11-11) I still dont have my top back. As of 10-17-11 I still dont have a top! updated 11/03/2011.

43 Body problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that the roof panel was separating from the frame of the vehicle. An authorized dealer was notified and the contact was informed that since the vehicle was not equipped with the factory roof, they would not honor the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 06v181000 (structure:body:roof and pillars). The manufacturer was then made aware, but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 27,000 and the current mileage was 28,000.

44 Body problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 02/25/2011

Popping noises coming from roof panel at low rate of speed as well as fast rate. Recall # 090230 found via internet. Dealership as well as gm both notified. They both stated that this VIN # was not included in the recall. Recall states 2005-2007 Corvette roof panel recall. Apparently other VIN #'s should be included in this recall to avoid possible injury or fatalities from roof panels that fly off.

45 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 05/08/2010

I recently purchased a used 2007 Corvette with targa top. The targa top makes a snapping noise as described in the NHTSA recall information. There is a loud snapping noise made when closing doors, engaging in gear, and especially loud when going over bumps of any kind. Cheverlot states that my VIN, even though a 2007 with the targa top making the loud snapping noise, is not covered in the recall.

50 Body problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/12/2009

Snapping sounds coming from the glass roof of my 2007 model year Chevrolet Corvette, purchased in August of 2006. Especially noticeable in temperature changes and rough road surfaces. Recall already in progress for 2005-2007 model year, but my car is not included as told to me by gm representative. I can have the car diagnosed by chevy, but at my cost. Cannot understand why my vehicle is not included in the recall, especially when it has the symptoms described in the recall information.

51 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 09/03/2009

My fiberglass roof (fixed) on my 2006 z06 flew off on the freeway going about 60 mph in the #4 (fast) lane. I had just taken it to the dealer to get if looked at and they ordered me a new one. While waiting, I had strong tape across the front so no air would get in. As I was driving today, I heard some wind noise and as I slowed down,it come off. I looked in my rear view mirror and I saw the top about 20 feet in the air and 50 yards behind me!!! I before this incident, I had to go to 2 dealers and gm themselves before I got help. It is a miracle no one was killed or injured, let alone no accidents occurred. This happened in woodland hill, CA while traveling n on the 101 freeway. On the way home, I saw what remains of the top in the s 101 fast lane!!! it went into oncoming traffic. This top had already been in for repairs by the previous own under a recall. They did the "foam" fix which can be seen here. . Read more...

52 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/25/2009

Hi, there is a known NHTSA bulliten on 05-06 Corvettes with roof delamination, well, my 2006 delaminated today but I found the problem before it flew off. I called gm and they said my VIN was outside the recall by ~500 units. I think the recall needs to be expanded as my problem is exactly what NHTSA campaign 06v181000 is discussing and covering.

53 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/12/2009

2006 Corvette had the roof recall (ref. Nhtsa campaign id# 06v181000) done on 6/7/07. I returned vehicle for recheck of recall on 11/1/07 as the roof did have some noticeable creak noises. The dealer reported the roof was not loose and lubricated the weather strips. On 6/12/09, getting on the highway, my wife noticed wind noise and then suddenly the roof panel flew off and over a pick up truck that was following her. She was going approximately 50 mph at the time the roof panel blew off. The frame which holds the removable roof was in place in the vehicle. The recall foam was in place in the frame. The vehicle has been taken back to the servicing dealer and the entire removable roof has been replaced. The dealer kept the old frame.

54 Body problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 05/30/2009

A recall exists for all 05-07 c6 oem Corvette removable targa tops. The glue bond holding the removable top to its frame breaks with temperature changes, and the tops break away and fly off the car. Over time, air at highway speeds air eventually blows under the top and pulls it off the frame. As part of the recall repair, gm injected foam under the thin plastic top into the roof frame to prevent the air from entering and ripping the top off. They did not address the real problem with the glue not holding the top on. They only addressed a symptom of the real problem to avoid the cost of replacement. My top had months of air leaking under it, a lot of noise over that period, and the foam inject recall had been performed with a previous owner. Gm denied my safety recall claim stating they injected the foam, but in reality they only treated a symptom. Gm used a legal run-around to avoid having to replace the top, saying they corrected the problem and met the NHTSA recall. All they did was inject some foam. They did not correct the glue problem and meet the burden of correction according to the recall. I was able to grab onto the top through my drivers window to hold it down when it unexpectedly started to rip off, or it would have hit traffic behind me, and caused wreck(s). Thanks you for your help and consideration in addressing gms reluctance to correct their recall problem.

55 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 03/30/2009

I own a 2006 Corvette z06 and there has previously been a recall on the roof panel. The roof panel has been making noises when going over bumps and turns, so I took it in to reliable Chevrolet in albuquerque, nm. Upon further inspection, the technician noticed one of the bolts that holds the roof in place was seized up and the hardware used to perform the roof recall was not the correct hardware for the vehicle. The service writer stated that the roof will need to be replaced, as well as all hardware and possibly the headliner, but they would not cover it since the recall was already completed. When I contacted gm, they stated that since the recall had already been performed, I will have to pay out of pocket to fix it. I contacted courtesy Chevrolet in san diego, the dealership that performed the original recall work, and they did not want to accept the responsibility. I have taken pictures of the seized bolt and incorrect hardware. Currently, the dealership will not give me a rental car since they are not assuming responsibility, yet they say my car is unsafe to drive as the roof may fly off. I await your prompt response as I would like this resolved immediately.

56 Body problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/11/2008

My 2007 Chevrolet Corvette coupe has since original purchase has made popping noises. It has been taken to the dealership several times. I even took it once and told them there was a recall on some tops. They informed me that my was not included. The first couple of times I took it in the dealership did do something that made an improvement but the noises coms back. Now it is a constant and embarrassing noise from the top. Even though it is not included in your recall I question whether a top might have been put on to make the sale since I wanted a painted top instead of a glass top. This is my 4th Corvette and have nothing but bad experiences with glass tops. My question what can I do about these noises.

58 Body problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/02/2008

While driving at 68 mph on a two highway, the roof section from a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette separated from the vehicle and went airborne. Prevailing winds blue the panel to the side of the road, keeping out of following or oncoming traffic flow which could have caused a serious accident. The 102 degree temperature appears to have caused the failure of the adhesive holding the roof panel to the roof frame. Vehicle was recalled in 2006 for the same problem and the roof was replaced at that time.

The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 09v491000 (structure). The dealer informed the contact that the striker adjuster would need to be redesigned in order to install the new roof panel. 62 Body problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/05/2006

2006 Corvette coupe top defect report. The bonding of the shell skin to the frame of my Corvettes portable painted top came loose and nearly caused an accident on the highway. I was able to grab the shell and bring the car to a controlled stop. The dealer told me my car was not on the recall list, but they will fix the problem. I also have a clear tented top that may have the same defect, but they have not responded to my request to determine if the defect exists in the clear tented top. I do not want to cause an accident or a death on the highway, so I will drive the car only on low speed roads until the chevy dealer gets me an answer on the condition of this clear top. Gm should go on report since gm failed to realize the top assembly bonding defect extends into their later built cars. Date of purchase 2/2006.
