The car has developed a condition where the steering column lock fails to unlock the steering column when the vehicle is started. A message appears in the dic display telling you to pull the key and wait 10 seconds. It shuts off the fuel supply if you attempt to drive it. Chevrolet acknowledged this condition existed in 2006 via a letter. The car only had a little over 5k miles on it at the time and now has only 43k on the odometer. Per my phone call with them today they feel they are no longer responsible. The first time this happened I had backed into the road and the car died leaving me in dire jeapordy. Can anything be done to make them honor this defect in this very expensive automobile? note. . . . This has been happening since the summer of 2018 intermittently.

My steering column failed in "locked" position. Car can not be driven. I called chevy global and told my car was not covered in recall number 04006c. I called dealer and was told the steering column was fixed in 2004, two years before the 2006 recall. I asked how could the column lock if the original lock plate was removed? no one can answer that. They proceeded to remove the lock plate and charge me $300. I never received any notification of this recall or service bulletin back in 2006.

I own a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette c6 base model with currently about 62,000 miles. It has now had 11 steering rack failures since I bought it used in August 2013 at 18,000 miles. It has been in the shop almost continuously since August 14, 2017 as of this week that's 6 months in the shop without normal use of the car. To have this many major safety-related parts failures over 4 years at normal use (@ 10,000 miles / year) is inexcusable, frustrating, and potentially dangerous. I am writing this letter to document steps I have taken to diagnose this issue, the attempts to inform gm of the issue to prevent future risks and aggravation to other customers, to reduce cost and risk to gm, and to be compensated for the aggravation and extraordinary effort and time I have had to invest in this issue. The oem rack from gm parts for my 08 Corvette is part #19330457 and is approximately $1200. There are several hours of labor to remove and replace the rack and realign the front wheels each time it is replaced. Thus each replacement job costs $2000 in total. Had I not bought a 3rd party extended warranty I would have been out of pocket over $10,000! in repairs on just the steering of this car. In sum, over 4 years my warranty company has paid over $10,000, I have paid over $2000 out of pocket, and it has been in the shop for a total of 8 months so far on its steering-rack related issues.

Driving down rt 2 in CT with cruise set on 65 when a "active handling" failure code just popped up on the instrument panel (very first time ever) and then the back right brake was activated skewing the car immediately to the right. I recovered the car and slowly drove it home with the code still displayed. I brought the car to the Corvette center and they told me that the steering wheel sensor failed and suggested I do not drive the car. They also told me that general motors does not make a replacement sensor nor do any aftermarket companies! they also told me that with the steering wheel sensor failure the vehicles brakes, either all or individually, could be applied any time I drive the car by the car's computer thus creating a various dangerous condition. I telephoned general motors Chevrolet division and the representative I spoke with apologized about the vehicles behavior and then confirmed there "was a problem" but couldn't help me as there are no replacement parts available to repair the vehicle. It is totally ridiculous to design a vehicle that incorporates an internal component that is absolutely crucial to the safety of the vehicle, occupants, and all those around it and not supply a replacement part thus rendering the vehicle "grounded" forever.
The contact owns 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign id number: 04v060000 (steering column: locking anti theft device) in March 2005. The contact stated that most recently, the steering failed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the lock link needed to be completely removed. The dealer also stated that there was a second recall issued by the manufacturer that stated that the lock link needed to be removed but the contact¿s vehicle was not included in the recall. The current mileage was 44,000 and the failure mileage was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette. While braking and turning in either direction, the vehicle braked independently and pulled to one side. The failure recurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column failed and the wiring needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v172000 (steering). The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
I was leaving my home for work. A warning light on the dash stated "steering column lock failure". The engine cut off and the column locked. Thankfully this happened at 20-25mph. The car had to be towed to the dealer where they determined that the steering column lock actuator had shorted. This actuator, according to gm records, had previously been replaced under a safety recall. They charged me over $500 to replace the actuator this time. At speed a steering column lock actuator failure could be deadly.
Movement of steering column causes failure of wire connector harness for the steering wheel position sensor. This failure causes incorrect position readings in the active handling system.
