Experiencing sudden loss of power steering while driving - unsafe condition. Experiencing sudden loss of electric power steering assist while driving. Loss of power steering persists until ignition recycling (stop, put car in park, turn ignition off, turn ignition back on), which seems to clear it. Problem re-occurs intermittently on subsequent drives. Issue has been experienced at multiple mph (0 to 65 mph) across more than a month of time. I believe my vehicle is experiencing the recall noted earlier this year (n182182760 in 2025) for power steering unit failures in Corvettes manufactured in my car's timeframe. The recall is still expanding the list of cars associated due to its nascent nature, and I believe mine is one of them. My car was manufactured in 2016 and the manufacturing defect in the power steering unit circuitry was not corrected until 2017. The recall investigation only occurred a few months ago, earlier this year in 2025. Request my vehicle be added to recall n182182760 to correct this unsafe condition. Thank you. . Read more...

Driving this vehicle yesterday, the power steering assist failed. Fortunately, I was traveling at a low speed at the time. A message appeared on the dash telling me there was a power steering issue and to drive cautiously. I can make this vehicle available for inspection upon request. I have not yet taken the vehicle to the dealer; nor had it inspected by any other party. The message in the dash did not appear until the component had failed.

I would be driving and get a notification in the panel that says power steering is out and to drive with care. It is extremely difficult to drive my vehicle, with no power steering. I would just be driving, and I would get the notification that power steering is out. The problem has been recently confirmed by a dealership. The mechanic at the dealership confirmed it was the same issue reported for the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette (n182182760). The first appearance of the issue was at 3800 miles on my 2016 Chevrolet Corvette. I was sitting at a red light, and the notification came on and said I didn't have power steering. The second time I was driving down the interstate at 70mph and it went out, not good. I was able to get it safely back to my sister's home and did not move it again until I took it straight to the dealership today, in which time it went out again. All this with 4085 total miles on my car at this time. I believe this should be covered under the same recall as the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette. My vehicle is available for inspection if someone would like to come out.
Vehicle was part of mandatory recall for problems with steering column lock. The same identified and inherent problem happened so that the steering column lock is engaged and will not disengage. Gm was contacted and refuses support and stated that I would have to take care of the problem and I would have to pay for the cost of the repair. Chevrolet created the problem, is well aware of the inherent problem and yet Chevrolet and it's local dealer will profit from the forcing the customer to pay and for customers safety. The steering column can lock up while the vehicle is moving which puts the operator and others including vehicles, pedestrians and structures in harms way.

I purchased this car from a dealer in sarasota florida. Driving it home from the dealer, I was driving approximately 70 mph on [xxx] near sarasota. The vehicle suddenly braked and pulled to the left simultaneously. I have taken it to a repair shop that specializes in Corvettes, and trying to id the problem. In doing research, evidently it is related to the active handling system. There is a recall NHTSA campaign number: 10v172000 manufacturer general motors corp. Components steering potential number of units affected 40,028 and a service bulletin 10118. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The electric power-steering assist is failing while my vehicle is in motion. I lose power steering and have to use significantly more effort and may lead to a crash, at any speeds. I was driving on the highway when this happened, although it has happened at slower, neighborhood speeds. When this happens, I see a warning message on the dashboard stating the power-steering assist failed and service power steering, drive with caution and the steering is all non-power steering. At times, when I stop the car, and turn the power off, and re-start the car, the power steering works again for a short period of time, and then fails again. This is extremely dangerous. I cannot find any recalls on my car VIN # for this issue for the 2014 Corvette, but see the exact symptoms for the 2017 Corvette (gm' number for this recall is n182182760). Help. . . . Please!.

2017 Corvette power steering assist failed while driving as described exactly in NHTSA recall NHTSA campaign number: 19v086000. Dealer claims recall is not included for my vehicle identification number. Car only has 5100 miles on it and failed exactly as recall described and nearly caused a collision as the vehicle is extremely hard to steer when power assist fails. I believe my VIN should be included in the recall. The vehicle repairs have not been completed yet.
When I start my vehicle, the steering wheel locking system does not disengage and the steering wheel stays locked.

Something is wrong where it will stall out when you start driving. Soon as I put the car in gear and start rolling forward it dies. And I’ve looked online and it’s quite common.
The electronic column lock system (ecls) failed. Car was recalled for this problem twice (2004 and 2006) my car was only included in 2004 recall, not the 2006 recall my car currently has 15,524 miles for an average of 675miles per year at time of 2004 recall my car had approx 2700 miles at time of 2006 recall my car had approx 4050 miles the failure of the ecls is a prevalent problem in the 2000 Corvette I never had a problem until June 2023 I was told by Chevrolet that this could happen again I am under the understanding from my research the ecls could fail while driving I want my car properly repaired to avoid a possible future catastrophe and to be reimbursed for towing and repairs.
The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the steering column remained in the locked position and the steering wheel could not be turned in either direction. The contact stated that occasionally the message "remove key - wait 10 seconds" was displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced that failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 78,000.
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated while reversing the vehicle steering became stiff. The contact shut down the vehicle, the contact moved the steering wheel side to side at the same time starting the vehicle, and the vehicle started operating normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated that the vehicle was already repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 04v060000 (steering) and advised to contact the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted a case was filed, and the manufacturer also stated that the vehicle was already repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 04v060000 (steering) and advised to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure mileage was 58,000.
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was towed to the residence, where an independent mechanic diagnosed that the steering column lock bypass needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. My service active handling and traction control light will come on randomly and disappear, when it does come on usually my car will brake on one side of the car and skip and skid over to one side. When it happens I have zero control of the braking and steering and it has taken my car into another lane completely. It is terrifying and I've had the whole brake system replaced, along with ecm, ebcm, rack and pinion all suspension and steering components, wiring harness and just about everything I could think of that may cause it. I have a tilting telescope steering wheel and I've heard that they can cause this.
I own a 1998 Chevrolet Corvette. The ebcm can have an issue. Complains of traction control, abs braking and ah active handling. This can cause issues when driving with no abs active. I have seen numerous complaints about this issue here and on various forums. Unfortunately the part needed to correct the issue is no longer available and for some reason cannot be repaired. Used parts are costly (2k or more) and no guarantee they work. Gm should provide replacement part or work around. If not available they should offer total car buy backs for a fare price depending on condition or offer an exchange for a Corvette that can be repaired.
The contact's friend owns a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while his friend was starting the vehicle, the steering wheel seized. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that they were unable to assist due to the age of the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 04v060000 (steering) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while making a right turn at a slow speed, the power steering assist failed. The contact stated that he was uncertain if any warning lights were illuminated during the failure. The contact restarted the vehicle however, the failure persisted. The contact was able to slowly drive the vehicle home. The dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 19v086000 (steering) which he linked to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 8,000.

2005 Corvette coupe, manual trans, z51. Intermittent problem: electronic steering column will not unlock when attempting to start or will not lock on shutdown. Vehicle inoperable, sometimes in potentially hazardous situations e. G. , late night in parking lot, and compromised anti-theft feature. Possibly relevant: when parked but steering failed to lock, continuous battery draw is 4 amps, which might contribute to the "dead battery syndrome" that 2005 m6 Corvettes are known for. Hard to separate the two issues since either way the starter will not engage. Problem has existed since new (2005) but has gotten progressively worse. Gm nonresponsive to multiple owner complaints. Aftermarket "column lock bypass" work-arounds have been sold for this problem, but they are potentially dangerous since they simply spoof the bcm into thinking that the lock is fully released when it is simply unpowered and can easily move into a partially locked position with vibration and time. This is what I recently observed that motivated this safety complaint. Gm finally issued a recall in 2018 (13 years after my) for this problem, but for some reason did not include manual transmission cars in the recall, possible because production was small compared with automatics. But from internet forums, it is clear that this problem affects all 2005 m6 Corvettes.
My steering column lock has failed on my c5 Corvette. I understand that there was a previous recall for this, but I have been the owner of this car since 2001 and was never notified by mail of the recall by gm. When I contact gm, they indicate that the recall is expired and there is nothing that they can do. Help!!!.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel would seize as the vehicle would stall and an error message would illuminate on the instrument panel to remove the key. The contact then took the vehicle to a dealer where they informed him that they could not service his vehicle. The contact then took the vehicle to cumming Chevrolet (mile of cars, 2301 national city blvd, national city, CA 91950) where they informed him of NHTSA campaign number: 04v060000 (steering) however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The contact then ordered the part to have the vehicle repaired; however, the dealer refused to service the vehicle since the part was an aftermarket part. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Have 2001 manual 6 speed Corvette. Column locks up. Have no way to start car or steer. Worried car will lock up steering column while driving. Gm says there's no recall on this. Seems to be a problem on c5 Corvettes.
Still having a problem with the steering column locking on my 1999 Corvette after the first recall was performed. Chevrolet issued a second recall but I never received a notification. The dealer indicated both recalls were closed and I had to pay $600+ to fix the problem. I contacted gm customer care for assistance but pretty much got the same feedback that the recall was closed and that there was no financial assistance they would provide, 100% of the cost would be my responsibility. I don't understand how a safety recall can be closed until it is repaired? I'm not sure why consumers have to pay for a design issue that has the potential of causing an accident due to the potential of the steering column locking up while driving! I had no choice but to direct the dealer to perform the repairs so I can drive the car with confidents it won't lockup in the future. Not expecting anything to happen as it seems these types of reported issues fall in favor of businesses and no longer the consumers. Just wanted to post this complaint out of frustration!.
Steering column lock warning light on vehicle which was recalled in 2004 and gm says my vehicle was not involved with recall and will not repair vehicle.
On numerous occasions the past two years the active handling system in the vehicle will take control for no reason and brake on one side causing the car to swerve out of its lane and other times applies the brakes on its own. Very dangerous.
The ebcm traction control module , abs control modules and the steering wheel position sensor for the c5 Corvettes made from 1997 thru 2000 are no longer manufactured by general motors or licensed to an after market manufacturer for production as an after market replacement. When these modules go bad there is a risk for accidents or death while driving as the abs system that works in conjunction with these modules will lock up one or more of the brakes causing the driver to swerve into other lanes. This happened to me when my steering wheel position sensor failed. We Corvette owners are forced to drive with the traction control off because we cannot find new replacement ebcm modules, abs modules of steering wheel position sensors . Our only recourse is to buy a used unit from a totaled 1997 thru 2000 Corvette at high prices and the are also defective at times according to Corvette fprum members. General motors continues to license after market manufacturers to make replacement ebcm modules, afbs modules and steering wheel position sensors for Corvettes manufactured in 2001 thru 2004 so why can't the license an after market auto part manufacturer to make these sensors for 1997 thru 2000 Corvettes? can the us government force gm to make these parts for the 1997 thru 2000 Corvette due to fact that these parts are vital for the 1997 thru 2000 Corvette to be safe on the road??.
While traveling down the freeway at around 80 mph on a straight flat surface, the Corvette sharply veered to the side as I heard a loud screech from one of the brakes it lasted for about a second. The turn was so abrupt I thought I was going to roll but after fishtailing was able to get things going straight. Immediately a service active handling system message popped up. Happened about a week later going about 60 mph not quite as abrupt. This condition could have lead to a fatality.
